Amazon.com Review

Warlocked is a fantasy real-time strategy (RTS) game that focuseson resource collecting, unit building, exploring, and battling between two bitter rivals: humans and beasts. Gamers can choose to play on one side or the other, each housing a dozen missions, numerous subplots, unique units, and different personalities.

We enjoyed how simply Warlocked uses the Game Boy Color's interface of four arrow keys and two buttons to do everything. RTS games typically rely heavily on savvy mouse maneuvering, and we feared the gameplay would be very difficult on the small Game Boy Color screen. Thankfully, its not, and the game scores better for it.

The basic gameplay involves mining gold and chopping down wood to create new buildings and units, as well as creating an army of warriors and archers to do your dirty work. If there are too many people and not enough houses, your town hall will be unable to produce more men until there are adequate quarters for them to sleep in. Likewise, if there's not enough wood to make archers, you may be stuck creating more sword-wielding grunts.

Wizards can be found and protected, then added to your arsenal. Each of the 20 different kinds of magicians features its own unique skill. While some may be able to launch fireballs, cause earthquakes or summon lightning storms, others may make enemies fall asleep, cause deadly plagues, or convert enemy fighters over to your side.

Mission objectives themselves vary greatly. From rescuing a princess, finding treasure chests, riding a dragon out of its lair, escorting an important member of royalty to safety, or destroying a village, it's rare to see such variety in any game these days, much less a portable one!

Warlocked has only one glaring problem: pathfinding artificial intelligence (AI). In many cases, when you're instructing your troops or workerto go somewhere, the little warriors will get stuck behind objects or tangled in groups.

The good news that comes out of this AI problem is the strong multiplayer mode. That's right--with the optional Game Link cable, twoWarlockedgamers can be (forgive the pun, we couldn't resist!) locked in war with each other. In fact, during the single-player game, it's possible to unlock special multiplayer maps (eight in all). This head-to-head option proved to be the most fun game mode of all.

Fans of the bigger, badder RTS games such as WarCraft and Age of Empires will find much to love here. Don't be thrown off by the Game Boy guise--you just might get hooked! --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Easy-to-use interface
  • Wide variety in gameplay
  • Fun head-to-head option
Cons:
  • Poor pathfinding artificial intelligence often makes for bumbling troops

5-0 out of 5 stars Warlocked
There are two sides that you can play on: Queen Azarel's army in which you control human knights, elven archers, and grunts(little humans that do work like mining and chopping down trees,) or Emperor Zog's army which consists of beast warriors (instead of human knights,) skeleton archers (instead of elven archers,) and goblins (instead of grunts.)You can also gather wizards to aid you, and build essential farms to feed your troops. Also, if you find a dragon egg, you can have your troops carry it back to your Main Hall (your base) and it will hatch in about one minute.Even when you beat the game, you will find yourself coming back for more strategic fun.

...This game is awsome and my guess is the guy in the last reveiw doesnt know how to play a strategy game. This game has every thing and is a great because it has mini games(poker, and slider) if you get tired of the main game. It would be better with more missions, its still a great game. But you may want to wait and get Wizards which is the sequel to this game, which will be on game boy advance.I cant wait.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fair reveiw
Hi i have been gaming for a while and i enjoy all types, since most reviews afther say the game is awesome or horible, but i will give a fair review. But to start I would like to say i would give this game a 3.5 but there is no half of a star rating, but i felt that the game wasn't good enough to be awared a 4 mark. Warlock is a neat little rts and is fun to play while travling, be sure to bring extra batteries! this game can get addicting, but it's pathetic when you compare it to other rts's like age of empires and startcraft etc. But you have to think. This little pak did pretty well and i enjoyed the game very much. You have to read the manual for a bit and practice the controls for a bit. But once you got those the game becomes easier to understand. The graphics are like 1980 ones but you can make things out, which is really all a games needs to have. Sound is good, and music changes during the battles, so it creates more of a mood. When you selecting on one of your troops (1 of 4 posible types) they give a little grunt that you can hear to know that you selected one. The game is really easy at first but it gets hard, you'll find yourself planning your attacks more carefully. Each game contains wizzards that have special abilities. and everytime you beat a level all your troops, wood and gold are put into a chest called "the War chest", after you completed one races game (there are two Humans [good, can use knights elfin archers and grunts] and Monsters {bad, can use wariors, skeleton archers and goblins]) niether has the any advantages over the other, but i found the humans quest easier then the monsters. Any way i would recomend this game to any one who read this reveiw and wants the game. But you may want to rent it before buying, so you spend less money.

What an awseome game!I would definitely reccomend you buyWarlocked! Now,don't get any ideas about players saying the graphics arn't good. That's their opinion, but my opinion is the graphics are awesome!!!You get to control an army of wizards, warriors(knights),archers, and you even get to control goblins(grunts) and make them build you buildings to help your army! There are a total of 26 levels. The first 2 levels prepare you for the other levels,so it's not a hard game to learn how to play, but it's very challenging. My favorite part of the game is getting to control wizards like Windwiz and Necromnancer.Warlocked was one of my first GBC games, and it will always be my favorite!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Game On The Market
This game is horrible; don't buy it.I wouldn't even spend four bucks to rent this weak excuse for a video game. The graphics are mighty retro--they rock if you dig stuff from 1984.As for me, I like graphics that look as good as Tony Hawk 2 on Playstation. Also, the controls make no sense, and you have to read the instruction booklet cover to cover just to figure out how to make some goofy looking dude build a hut or something. This game is wack, get Frogger 2 instead. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids . . .
I agree with the reviewers who say that this game is good for beginners. It has a few good features, such as fun (but short) tutorials, autosave which stores the board position after each move, and has a story mode where you get to play opponents from all over the world. However, I do have a few complaints.First, it has several minor programming glitches. For example, as you move from continent to continent it does not always display the graphics of how many trophies you have won on the current continent, but rather gets stuck on the continent that you started on.Also, it is hard to navigate from continent to continent at times. The second complaint I have is a problem I have found on another chess program as well and must be a common programming oversight. If you set up the board to play out an endgame puzzle against the computer, it occasionally makes illegal moves such as moving it's king into check. This problem is so bad and occurs often enough that I gave up on setting up specific endgame positions to play out, which is too bad because I really need to practice endgames. The last problem I have with it is that ALL of the opponents make major mistakes often and thus are extremely easy to beat. When I unlocked Kasparov (the most difficult opponent in the story mode) I checkmated him in 9 minutes the first time I played him and was never in danger or behind in material at any point.I am not a very strong chess player (I can barely beat my old 8-bit original gameboy version of Chessmaster on the lowest settings) and was disappointed that I was able to beat every opponent on the story mode without any effort. However . . . this would make the game a confidence builder for kids, and would be a good way to introduce a beginner to the game. Most opponents you play in the real world will make major mistakes as well, so playing a computer program that does the same would provide a realistic experience for someone just starting out who's best strategy against this program (and other beginners) may be to play defensively, look for a major mistake, and pounce on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rookies opinion
Clean graphics, with a wide choice of chessboards.A few are difficult to see under average light, but most are fine, and there is a bright, clear black and white board if all else fails.A GREAT feature is that it auto-saves your game at the exact point you left it at.You don't have to back out and find the save screen.Just shut it off, and come back later. No passwords.I don't know what that reviewer was talking about.

I can't offer an opinion as to how the game play stacks up against a good player.I can tell you that although I learned the moves 35 years ago, I've never put any real time into chess.Any other computer or hand-held chess game completely decimated me within moments.Too frustrating to be any fun.I decided to give this a shot, and I'm glad I did.

In "story" mode, the first few "street" players weren't too bad, I actually got through them to take on the master (the master is killing me though)The up shot is that it is enjoyable for me for the first time ever.Although the players have personalities, and playing styles, their moves aren't "canned," They play differently every time.

If you choose "quick game" mode, you can take moves back, replay them, or have the computer choose your move. You can also set up the board for any scenario you like, and jump back and forth between sides if you want.

There are two ways to play another human. You can pass the game boy back and forth, or use a cable.I have not tested the cable. The instructions claim you DO NOT need a second game cartridge.

I don't know how this stacks up to chess master, or other chess games.I can tell you that I consider it money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This game is AMAZING!I am a novice chess player who has been trying to improve my chess.Ive been reading some books "Complete Idiots guide to Chess", "Reasses your Chess", "The Amatuers mind".And this game is really helping my game. The story mode is cool with 31 different personalites. And they play like different people as well. Some are cautious and play the game running and countering.Others come out blasting like Yosimate Sam.The guy who said there is passwords is mistaken. There are three save slots and the game is saved after every move which means you can play in the doctors office without worrying that you have to finish every game in one go.I have never been happier with a game and have played 6 hr settings regularly.I love this game!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids
This is great for kids. I have played tournament chess and used some of the best commercial software. I went through another round of purchases and trials for this time. There is some powerful software available, but I needed something that young kids could learn with. I looked at PDA software as well, but that did not fit the bill either (one with the "legal-moves" is a good fall-back option). The GBA module works very well. It is easy enough for beginners. It shows the moves. It encourages them to compete against opponents with an increasing degree of difficulty. It is compact and inexpensive. A great buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars problems with tutorial
The gameplay is fun and I feel that I am learning while playing, not working at learning the game. This alone makes it preferable to the Chessmaster software that is on my computer.
The lettering used in the tutorial is very difficult to read.Had to go into sunlight to go through the tutorial.
Have yet to find the letters to be used to save games. Could not find them on the save page.Games are saved, however when the Game Boy is shut off. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best collectors item
This game, Pokemon Green, is the now known "blue" version in Japan. When they translated this item into English, They called it Pokemon Blue. Pokemon Green has many extras in it including: ;new items similar to the Gold and Silver versions ;new pokemon to choose from in the beginning ;and, it's in hirogana (the native japanese language)

This game is fun! You could call it a mix of gold, silver, and the blue version. It does cost a little, but it's worth it's weight to collectors aswell as hobbiests.

3-0 out of 5 stars weird
my uncle just sent me this for christmas and it is just alright.you really have to know what you are doing.I would recommend the gold and silver over this anyday.
