Editorial Review As the wrestlers comes out, their theme music is played, and they go through their trademark moves. From there the action gets a little slow. While the crowd sounds very realistic, the actual moves are executed rather slowly. Plus Acclaim has included a function that causes the wrestlers to lock arms if they get too close. This is designed to keep a player from using the same moves over and over again. It doesn't work--an entire match can be won by just hitting the kick button. What it does do is force numerous arm locks that do little damage and can turn monotonous. However, executing a great move like a body slam is cool--when it works. Hard-core professional wrestling fans will appreciate the accurate character models and faithful reproductions of signature moves of their favorite wrestlers. While those who are into fast and furious wrestling action will be better served looking elsewhere, fans who enjoy watching the pros will enjoy this game's cinematic attitude. --Allen Stewart Pros: Features Reviews (48)

Editorial Review There are more than 100 tricks to master, which is necessary if you want to unlock secret levels or outrun the donut-eating cops. Since motion-capture technology was used to design the movement of each skater, each special move looks fairly natural when executed. In addition, each environment is completely interactive. For example, you will see leaves fall from a tree if you happen to hit it. Of course, you can also interact with objects to show off your skating skills. We had fun sliding down ramps and jumping over trashcans. One of the strengths of Thrasher: Skate and Destroy is its phenomenal hip-hop soundtrack, which features icons like Grandmaster Flash, Eric B. & Rakim, EPMD, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Sugar Hill Gang, Afrika Bambaataa, Public Enemy, Stetasonic, and Run-D.M.C. --Carrie Bell Pros: Reviews (47)
1. The characters in this game can't skate, they hardly get any air 2. Controls are hard 3. I have to unplug the controller to pause the game (pressing start will start some kind of police chase) 4. When I wipeout, it shows it in slow motion which is really anoying 5. lame soundtrack if u want a good game then get one of the tony hawk pro skater games, whoever chooses this the best over tony hawk, they must have a monkey controling their brain ... Editorial Review The real crowd pleaser here is Knockout Kings 2000's career mode. Choosing from a wide varietyof options, you get to create your own custom boxer, who can fight his way to the top in career mode orparticipate in exhibition and slugfest matches. Before career fights, customized boxers can be improved bytraining, or playing various mini-games. (A memory card is required to save custom boxer data.) What robs Knockout Kings 2000 of the championship belt is its unbalanced 3-D graphics. Theboxers look great and move fluidly, but everything else appears flat and unfinished. Thankfully, fast gamespeed and responsive controls clamp down on the sightseeing, which is one sure-fire way to end up KO'd.--Joe Hon Pros: Reviews (29)
However, I agree with other reviewers in that the game is not so true to real-life boxing techniques. (Of course, one can argue that realism in a video game is unimportant, just as in the movies...) I can win too easily just throwing combos. Not much strategy involved. Also, defense is impossible in the game. All you can do is evade once the computer starts swinging; bobbing and weaving are useless. This really annoys me. Another thing that bothers me is that the computer can throw just as many combos as you, but still have nearly a full tank of stamina. I wonder why George Foreman or Mike Tyson aren't included? I mean, Jack Dempsey, but no George Foreman? Come on! And Ken Norton and Joe Frazier are underrated in the game. This really bummed me out. Also, it seems odd to me that I can beat Muhammad Ali with, say, Leon Spinks, easier than I can beat Larry Holmes or Evander Holyfield, using the exact same strategy. And Holyfield--while a great heavyweight--is not as good as the game makes him out to be, in my opinion. But all in all, the game is good for hours of enjoyment. There are more things I like about it than dislike. I recommend it favorably.
I will start out by saying that this is perhaps the best boxing game going today. Mike Tyson's Boxing for teh PSX sux bad.Ready to Rumble was just incoherent.I have not tried HBO boxing yet.The music is good. The career mode is good. There are a lot of good things about this game.BUT. Anyone that has ever had a MINUTE of training knows not to start off a fight throwing combos. The rule of thumb is to stick with your jab and let the combos flow.Do not force them.I can put the game on HARD and literally win within two rounds by doing nothing but combos. The best combo is circle, triangle, triangle, triangle. This totally goes against boxing logic. I wish EA would have put a little more stock in defense. The only way to do defense is literally hit and RUN.When the computer starts swinging, run and circle to the left.Bobbing and weaving dont work. This is depressing. I also wish EA would develop a "watch mode."I know this may sound wierd, but I LOVE commentating games. My freinds will swear that my commentary is the only reason they play the game.I would just love to commentate Chavez v Hagler.Oh well. The game is worth 20 bucks, but not much more than that.Seriously, it is not very challenging. I played the 2001 version, but dont remember much about it.BTW, Mike Tyson's Punchout for the Nintendo (1987) was the best boxing game ever--barnone.
So, I know a little about what I speak.I guess I use too much strategy when I play, because I always go to the body before going to the head. I always wear a guy down - "Kill the Body, and the head will follow". Minuses 1. I was very disappointed that even after you wear a fighter down by reducing his stamina, they were still able to throw combinations and flurries constantly. Not very realistic. 2. I am very disappointed that you have to press four buttons very, very quickly to throw a combination. I am sure the computer does not have this problem judging from the amounts it throws. 3. I am very disappointed that when you start a combination or a flurry, the computer can stop you in your tracks with a punch while you do not have the ability to do so... usually, after he starts a combination, you cannot get a punch off until he is through punching. 4. I am very disappointed that you can max out your speed and power on career mode and someone like Marlon Wayans of all people still hit as hard as you. He's a comedian for crying out loud. You should knock him out with the first punch you throw. You also get beat to the punch in many fights even with 100 in speed. 5. If you have ever paid attention to the punch stats, you will find that the other guy hits on about 90-95% of his punches. The only way to keep him from doing that is to constantly bob and weave and you still get hit more than 50% doing that and you can't really punch out of the bob and weave on this game. I on the other hand am blocked very consistently and hardly ever land more than 50%. 6.The commentators hardly get any punches right. Many rounds, all I have thrown is left hooks to the body and the other guy has thrown the occasional punch to the body back, and usually at the most inappropriate moment, O'Grady says, that's was a nice cross there. Someone in the stands must have thrown the right cross because no one in the ring did. 7. In the lightweights, you have a guy 115 lbs?Come on, Be more realistic. This isn't 1900 when there were only about four weight classes and everyone under 130 or so fought lightweight. And a hint to the programmers, A 115 lb guy could never hurt a guy 140 even if his record is 38-2-0 with 26 knockouts. And the speed difference wouldn't be enough to overcome that disadvantage. 8. How do you throw specialty punches? The little book doesn't even mention them. The little book only mentions signature punches. And I get nailed everytime I am winding up to throw my signature punch, so I stopped trying. It is also very, very difficult to press the triangle button at the same time as the "o" button. You almost have toput the controller down. 9. Overall, I am agreement with everyone who states that this is just a "press the button faster and more times and you will probably win" game. What fun is that? I can buy Street Fighter or something if I want that. I kept looking for steaks or something for "powerups". Pluses- Not many, but the wide range of fighters was pretty good, I guess. It was cool to fight Boom Boom Mancini and then right after that fight Arguello. Arguello killed me. It's fun to throw an illegal punch or elbow back when a fighter does it to you.I sometimes do it when I try for 40 seconds or so to hit the guy but he keeps covering up because he is about to go down. I was once stopped on cuts even though I had knocked my opponent down about 4 times and was leading on all the scorecards. That was OK. I am not going to buy the 2001 version because it sounds like it was more of the same of this game. It sounds like they added more glitter but no real gameplay. Here are suggestions to the makers (EA) if they keep trying. 1. Have purses and have offers to fight several opponents thereby making you have to make a decision on who you will fight. Will you fight the mandated opponent, or will you fight the big money Champion coming up from the next lowest weight division. Have a fighter be stripped of one of the belts if he doesn't fight the contender mandated by the governing body. 2. Every now and then (ay like maybe .001% or slightly more) have a fight stolen on points cards by dumb judges. 3. Have fighters have styles that give more depth to slugger and boxer like "starts fast but finishes weak", "gets stronger as the fight goes on", and other styles - there are plenty. 4. Have the ability to match up two fighters and have the computer fight for both of them. There are other things but these are the main ones I had... ... Read more

Sound: 5/10 – Relaxing, swift and sweet snowboard sounds, but the boulders could have made more noise, the music could have been more exciting and the sound editing is ... . Value: 7/10 – While this is fun and challenging with cheats to die for, there are simply much better Cool Boarders games. Overall: 7/10 – This is not the greatest snowboarding game ever, but it is entertaining and nicely designed with good gameplay. I enjoyed playing it. It is better with 2 players and I recommend finding the cheats before playing.

Amazon.com Review In terms of playability, EA Sports has added some nice new features. Players arerewarded with collectable in-game Madden Cards by performing certain tasks, which can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and legendaryNFL teams. Also, you can trade those cards with friends using the PlayStationmemory card. Enhancing the replayability of Madden NFL 2001 is a newtwo-minute drill feature that allows up to 10 players to compete for the highestscore. The game does have a couple of trouble areas. The CPU play isn't all thatsynched with the gameplay, resulting in some very strange calls and plays. JohnMadden's commentary is stocked with only a few phrases, which are used adnauseam. While not perfect, the sound effects and crowd noises are stillpreferable to the whiny blips of the N64 version. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Reviews (45)

There is one very cute thing in the program. EA put in a boxing stadium in Redwood Shores California where they are based. The funny thing is that there is no bxing arena in Redwood Shore!! Editorial Review Solo players will skate to win the world championship, with over 100 moves available to score points, including slides, grinds, and landing tricks. A split screen allows players to compete against each other. During this head-to-head mode, you can score style points, race between obstacles, or play tag. If you opt for graffiti mode, both players compete against each other by "tagging" objects while performing their tricks. A replay mode is available for players to view highlights at the end of a game. The level design is enormous, with 10 interactive courses, including skate and pool parks, half pipes, and a downtown area. Each skating environment is filled with secret places, shortcuts, and obstacles. Once you get the moves down, you can perform a trick off of just about any object that you see. Tony Hawk is not the only star in this game--the music stands strong on its own. Cool cuts come from Primus and the Dead Kennedys--which can be inspiring during the frantic onscreen action. While game control is relatively solid, there are some minor problems in tight areas. This title is so large it is overwhelming, given the enormity of levels and available moves. However, persistent skate pros will master this game with a little practice. (Fortunately, there is a practice mode to scrape your knees on.) --Kasty Thomas Pros: Reviews (154)

Amazon.com Review Despite the fact that it's mostly derivative, the game has a fewoutstanding features. It contains lots of full-motion video sequences, albeit at the expense of load times. The real gem is the soundtrack, which is a nice mix of punk, electronica, hip-hop, and rock. It'sdefinitely one of the best video game soundtracks ever. Amazon.com Product Description Reviews (138)
First off, they gave the game arcade style feel and controls. Big mistake. They also made it more like the actual show: you have to continually punch the guy before you can start doing grappling moves. I may be in the minority, but constantly punching a guy gets old fast. I want to be able to start throwing suplexes and hitting piledrivers right off the bat. Secondly, the game's A.I. has gotten extremely intelligent. Too intelligent. The game can kick your ass unless you're a great gamer, and I'm just average, maybe a little below. Mainly because of the counter system. The game goes like this: punch, punch, punch, punch, grapple, move-counter move-counter move, etc. You'll get countered excessively, and your counters won't work most of the time. Yes, it is a lot like the actual wrestling you watch on TV, but for a wrestling game to be fun in my opinion, it can't be realistic in terms of following how an actual wrestling match would go. I don't want to spend over an hour or more in a match, 15-30 minutes is plenty, unless it's a Royal Rumble-type match. THQ threw out the window the great grappling engine they had with the N64 games and has replaced it with this tripe. I honestly don't understand what the fans see in this series of game. I guess if you like your matches in the game to follow how the matches on the show work, and you enjoy the actual wrestling to a be a chore and full of non-stop punching and countering, than this is the game for you. If you want an actual FUN wrestling game, then I suggest you stick with THQ's WCW games on the N64. At least then, they had the right idea. ... Read more

1. Sound. The best sound effects I've ever heard on a wrestling game. I've played many titles in this genre, including Wrestlemania XIX and Legends of Wrestling II, and Mayhem is superior to both. The crowds roars and jeers, the thuds and slams, go together to make a fantastic atmosphere. Even better is the two man commentary, and it's like you're watching it on TV. 2. The wrestlers. Coming from the late 90's WCW era, this has got some of the biggest superstars in wrestlin history gruped together. Hollywood Hogan (as he was then), Macho Man Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Sting, Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Goldberg, Curt Henning, Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner.....it's a great line-up. I'd say it's the best line-up in any wrestling game until this years Showdown: Legends of Wrestling. There's 50 wrestlers all together. 3. The wrestling itself. Don't expect super-fast gameplay. Don't even expect the pace of the latest wrestling games. Expect the methodical, paced action of late 80's wrestling. It's spot-on. I haven't seen such an accurate representation of the speed of wrestling in any other game. 4. It's for PS1, so it's incredibly cheap now. I picked up a secondhand copy from this very site for a mere £1.99. Two pounds, and to think it used to cost about £34.99 originally. As far as value for money goes, it's a five star purchase. Now the negatives. The graphics are weird and not especially attractive - the crowd is just a flat block of coloured blobs. The weak collision detection means your punches will often miss at point blank range. There's no season mode, you just fight for titles and defend them. The Create A Wrestler mode is so basic you won't be able to make any of your favourite wrestlers not in the game already. You can, however, make a knight in armour... To sum up, WCW Mayhem is not the greatest wrestling game on the market. No matter what console you have, there is atleast two better games avaliable. For the PSX/PS1, WWF Smackdown and Smackdown 2: Just Bring It. For the PS2, four Smackdown games, and three Legends of Wrestling games. For the XBox, WWE Raw & Raw 2, and three Legends of Wrestling games. And for the GameCube, Wrestlemania X8 and XIX, and two Legends of Wrestling games. Nevertheless, I'm still playing Mayhem today and I have both Wrestlmania XIX and Legends of Wrestling II on my shelf. The commentary, the wrestlers avaliable and the accurate pace of real wrestling make this unique and enjoyable. Add to that the fact that it's ridiculously cheap (even if you only played it for one night, you'd still get value for money), and you're looking at a worthwile purchase.
I am not a big fan of the new manner of controlling your wrestler built into this game; it is much less intuitive than older WCW-based wrestling games, and I often find myself able to come up with only a very limited number of moves; still worse, I constantly find myself repeating moves I had no intention of repeating. The announcers do at least have fun with this, talking about move repetition in disparaging terms as it is going on.Their overall banter, though, while quite funny at times becomes repetitive itself after a short while.Even the overexcited shouts of Schiavone declaring a victory in the ring grow stale, as do his constant calls for someone to stop the bloodbath and call for help.I never get tired of the Brain, though; he is always hilarious. I don't think the graphics here are much of an improvement over older games, either. There's really not a lot of difference in audio and visual between WCW Mayhem and earlier WCW games for the Playstation. You can fight backstage now, which is cool, but the graphics are largely unimproved and the gameplay is awkward and sometimes annoying.I would much rather play the older WCW/NOW Thunder than I would WCW Mayhem, when it comes right down to it.

Amazon.com Review Acclaim made an equity investment in the wrestling series, and AnarchyRulz, their second PlayStation title in the Extreme series, is fully loadedwith plenty of features and gameplay modes. Plus, you'll have 34 wrestlers thatyou can select from, including Tommy Dreamer and Super Crazy(note the easy-to-remember names!). Of course, knowledge of the franchise helps immensely. ECW includes a Create-a-Wrestler option that lets the would-be manager have funwith creating fighters. You can even put together your own four-person wrestlingposse, complete with theme songs, personality clashes, and a logo for yourgroup. Anarchy Rulz also comes with the typical wrestling game modes:exhibition, career, and tournament. In terms of the action in the ring, this is where Anarchy Rulz shows itstrue colors. The camera's flutter and movement is very irritating, and thegameplay seems an exact replica of Acclaim's previous WWF titles. The wrestlingaction relies too much on grappling and not enough on the over-the-top actionthat the ECW is famous for. There are very few throws and no high-risk leaps ortakedowns. Crazed ECW fanatics or wrestling lovers should enjoy this game, while all othersmight want to pass. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Features Reviews (20)
In examining the other features available in AR, I will admit that I did enjoy the inclusion of those ECW personalities that didn't appear before in Hardcore Revolution and hence made their debut in this game, from the legendary "American Dream" Dusty Rhodes to the lovable yet laughable "loser" named Mikey Whipwreck. I also liked the various "jobbers" that players can unlock---even the foul-mouthed Trainer, who (for some reason I as yet cannot ascertain) is now a heel (bad-guy wrestler) after being a babyface (good-guy wrestler) for three games straight since Warzone. The opportunity to create one's own stable (four-member team) is also pretty fun, but considering that it takes a whole block of memory to save a single custom-made stable, players will ask, "Why bother?" The same goes for the new types of matches that one can participate in---Dumpster, Table, Backlot Brawl, and Brimstone. Sure, they're all very innovative and quite fun to watch, but the aforementioned flaws in control take much of that fun away. Even the Create-a-Wrestler feature---a staple in this line of games from Warzone on---leaves much to be desired, for though players have far more options available to them in selecting the outfit, entrance music, voice, moves, and so forth for each character they make, the nature of AR's gameplay again messes things up by compromising the nature of the moves in use. For example, in the instance that a given CAW uses both a Torture Rack and a Beast Choker, that character can only use one of these two submission holds upon pressing the punch button when grasping an opponent from behind, which varies with the degree of tie-up advantage (s)he has at the moment and accordingly makes the selection of created characters' maneuvers rather useless. This especially holds true for players who might not know what some of the moves are supposed to be in the first place based on their names alone. Speaking of submission holds, I would like to bring up the fact that almost EVERY hold in Anarchy Rulz is now meant to force opponents to "tap out"---even such holds as the Side Headlock, the Leg Grapevine, and the run-of-the-mill Full Nelson. Sorry to say, but only the most "hardcore" enthusiast (if you'll pardon the bad pun) of Extreme Championship Wrestling would want to purchase Acclaim's ECW Anarchy Rulz, and then only for its nostalgia value. Not only is its gameplay a chore to become accustomed to (as mentioned above), but with its ugly graphics and mediocre sound quality, Joel Gertner's obnoxiously self-serving "color" commentary, and an inappropriately large amount of bloodshed for ANY game with a rating of "T for Teen," this title is not one worth playing. My advice for PSX owners and ECW fans alike is simple: Save your money on both Aspirin and video games by sticking with Hardcore Revolution.

Any fan of the AFL enjoys the bone-rattling hits on the 50-yard indoor field. This game certainly has its fair share of those explosive collisions."Kurt Warner's Arena Football Unleashed" is a fairly entertaining arcade-style football game. Unlike the AFL, this game only allows for 6-on-6 players, but the graphics are quite good. The game has all 17 AFL teams and respective arenas and you can develop a good gameplan with a plethora of well-designed plays.Larry Beil, the official voice of the AFL does the commentary for the game, which is an excellent addition. The lack of penalties is more than made up for by the vicious "NFL Blitz"-like hits. Accepting the game for what it is worth, with its arcade-style of football, it is pretty fun, and there is a good replay factor. If you are a football fan, this game will be a good purchase.
