Editorial Review Wonder no more. Tokyo Xtreme Racer delves into the world of highway racingfeaturing customized Japanese autos. The basic premise: cruise the Tokyo highway untilyou find someone who looks a bit too cocky, flash your lights to signal your racingintentions, and commence speeding. The racing physics in the game aren't perfect and thegraphics may not bowl you over, but TXR is a lot of fun and it can be a very deepgame for dedicated players. There are hundreds of prospective opponents, and plenty of ways to upgrade your car, butthe one element that will no doubt turn off American racing gamers is that there's onlyone track for the entire game. If you can handle that, and the lack of any apparent damagefrom collisions, then TXR is good fun. --Jeff Young Pros: Reviews (44)

There are LOTS of things to unlock, from over 80 pieces of very nice artwork to two "Secret Options" which require a very high cumulative score (saved to VMU after each session) to open up. Technically, it is also under-rated even by some shooter fans. For instance, the "Vulcanon" effect--in which a certain high number of bonus medals (released from expiring enemies) on screen at once transforms into even higher scoring medals--discourages "kill and cover" medal collection. You have to sit back and brave more enemy fire BEFORE starting collecting your hard-earned bonus medals, or you'll lose the "Vulcanon" effect. As a shooter fan, this comes in second on Dreamcast only to the import-only Zero Gunner 2, and ties the excellent, less-flashy but more-technical Mars Matrix.
You choose between various cool looking fighters. But the actual game play is lame, you fire relentlessly on countless enemies, and hit your reflect button constantly. I've rented this game and played it for about 20 minutes.I think that about does it for me and this game.
But, once again, it can be a reasonably fun experience as long as you don't go in expecting some masterpiece like Square's EINHADER.Aside from the overwhelming odds you face in terms of adversaries capable of covering 99% of the screen with projectiles that spell instant death if you touch them, there's nothing remarkable about this game.If you feel you must own one Giga Wing or the other, I can't really think of a valid reason to go with the first instead of the second...this sequel is cheaper, easier to find, and boasts a little more variety and longevity. Sorry for the simple review but, well...it's a simple game.
The main reason for this is the game's overall presentation.Capcom has utilized the Dreamcast-friendly Naomi board to full glory, and everything is rendered in gorgeous 3D, resulting in outstanding visuals for a vertical shooter. The ship designs (planes, rather) are fantastic, using an almost retro-futuristic theme. Most planes, yours (you have five to choose from at the game's start) and the enemy's, are propeller-driven.The soundtrack is wonderful, using an orchestral score instead of tired techno. These changes from typical shooter molds are most welcome, and are almost worth the price of the game themselves. Gameplay in GW2 is a shallower version of Mars Matrix (a superlative DC shooter also by Capcom).Your craft is outfitted with a Reflect Barrier, (which reflects enemy fire when activated), smart bombs, and an upgradeable main cannon. The pyrotechnics involved with these weapons are wonderful creations of color, brilliant explosions of destruction, and each plane's attacks are different. You progress through bullet-laden levels, destroying everything, then encounter a boss:typical shooter stuff.Problem is, GW2 is too short AND you have unlimited continues, which waters down the challenge considerably.Too bad there's no Mars Matrix-ish Shop Mode here! There is an art gallery to unlock, as well as the five planes from the first GigaWing, but once those are opened, there's little to challenge you. There is a 4-player mode, but the slowdown gets so bad the game's barely playable -- unfortunate! Despite these flaws, GigaWing 2 has a grandiose feel to it that is compelling. You'll get immersed in the futuristic setting which is magnified by the design and graphics.Unfortunately, under the glossy surface there isn't a lot of meat. It's certainly worth the [money], and I don't feel it deserves the bad press it's gotten.Plus it'll probably be Capcom's last Dreamcast shooter. If the gameplay had matched the audio-visuals, GW2 would have been a classic. ... Of course, being a DC game, I figured I had the game set on an easy difficulty level that only allowed access to several stages, but I read the manual and to my disbelief, that was the game in all of it's 5 stage glory!NOthing else here to extend the life of the game (save for some stupid boring cards you can earn showing various art from the game), Capcom just took the easy route and did a direct arcade port with few enhancments or additional levels. Two player mode makes the game even easier and shorter. Why did Capcom allow this game to come out for the DC?I have no idea...arcade purists will enjoy the short, but extrememly bullet-ridden game (the game is virtually blanketed by enemy bullets at times...a testament to the fact that is was an arcade-only game where constant continues are necessary to bring profit to the arcade owner), but I've played BETTER and LONGER shooters on every system dating back to the Atari 2600!5 stages just doesn't cut it and Capcom should have added to it! The few good points are: the game is 100% accurate to the arcade, the graphics are garish but good in a retro-arcadey kind of way, there's virtually no slowdown even during the heaviest bullet storms, and it's a good game for people who don't have a lot of time for gaming. That said, you'd be best served by getting Mars Matrix, another bullet-heavy short arcade-ported shooter, but one that has been somewhat expanded with various DC modes and a cool shop option where you get to buy upgrades and such to extend the life of the game.Gigawing is simply not worth the money.
There are several different planes to choose from, each with different standard weapons which can be upgraded via appropriate power-ups, but not a great deal of variety is added to the game because of this, because fighting your way to the end is really just a matter of using your reflect force at every opportunity and dropping bombs whenever the screen gets cluttered (which is just about all the time). You're given unlimited continues and when you use one you pick up at the exact same point you left off, so there's not much incentive to be careful where you fly or to deploy your bombs conservatively.Pretty much anyone can pick up this game and beat it on their first attempt with the proper amount of patience.Continuing will reset your score (which can be up to 16 digits) but most people won't want to put themselves through the frustration of finding the one square inch on the entire TV screen where it's safe to be when the enemies are bombarding you with gunfire from about a thousand different directions at once. In light of this criticism, my three-star rating may seem too high.Well, in spite of the simplistic gameplay and unremarkable graphics and sounds (not to mention the feeble Japanese-to-English translation), Giga Wing is sort of fun, at least for a while. It's mercifully short, and if you're not expecting a masterpiece of old-school 2-D shooting bliss, you may find some merit in it.Casual shooter fans are advised to pass it by;die-hards may want to break it out every once in a while, but chances are it won't hold too glorious a spot in their libraries.

Editorial Review Striker Pro will wow soccer fans with 130 teams from the bestEuropean leagues as well as from all over the world. There are threelevels of competition from national to international cup play, whichcan be unlocked once players prove in their worth in training mode. Striker Pro scores early with its options, letting playersadjust weather conditions, injury time, and penalty settings as well astoggle between the analog and digital control pads. Speed anddifficulty can also be bumped up to taste. On the field, teams play up,back, or somewhere in the middle, with the score often determining ateam's formation. Animations and graphics are Dreamcast quality, andthe control is intuitive. In fact, we'll go so far as to say thatStriker Pro 2000 is the most perfect soccer video game thatwe've played thus far. --Robb Guido Pros: Reviews (14)
Once I got the game I was amazed by the realistic gameplay, graphics and the little things that make soccer so much fun. When you first get this game there are about 25 or so European teams you can choose from including Manchester, Muchen, Monaco and many others. There are also 72 international teams including Brazil, USA, Germany, France, and Argentina that you have to ulock by completing all of five of the challenging practice stages. You can also create up to eight teams and create players to up-date the teams. There are a few things that are flawed in this game. The announcers are good but their intro to the game is always the same and they aren't very interesting. Also the goalies are very dumb and you can easily score 3 or 4 goals each game. Overall this is by far the best soccer game on the Dreamcast. I highly recommend this game for soccer fans around the world.

With a wide variety of play-modes, a compelling soundtrack and online play, even a Tetris novice can fritter away hours in a single sitting. What else can I say? It's Tetris.
1) There just isn't much to it - nothing to unlock, no special features, etc.It has almost no replay value, especially for a single player. After an hour or two, it's useless. 2) It is slow and buggy. There is often noticable lag between controller input and onscreen action.I have witnessed at least 3 separate bugs during the 4 times I have played it (and it wasn't worth playing more than 4 times). 3) It is limited to 2 players. Also, the Classic Tetris that it provides is only single-player. 4) The speed and difficulty advance far too quickly.Plus, since it saves each player's level, you are forced to play at the level at which you left off.Essentially, you hit a wall after a few games and cannot proceed. This "feature" does do a good job of allowing players of different skills to compete, but it was taken too far. 5) It has lame music and lackluster graphics. For a great version of Tetris, see "The New Tetris" for the Nintendo64 - it's absolutely wonderful.
1)Neither Sega nor Crave have any mention of the game on their respective web sites and neither does ...the site mentioned in the instruction manual. They aren't too proud of this one. 2)I have found several bugs in the game including: a)random changing of names on the players list to blank spaces or a single square box b)on 2 seperate occasions a falling piece has fallen through one block to rest on a block immediately below where it should be c)while playing a 2 player game, the player 1 controller started to control both games being played (happened 2 times in a row) d)sometimes at the beginning of a round an extra second ticks of the clock before pieces are allowed to move e)when playing somebody with lower rank, the lower rank player can move their blocks a fraction of a second sooner than the higher rank player. 3)I have rarely found other people online to actually play against 4)There are much cheaper (and probably less buggy) versions of this game available for playstation and PC.

Editorial Review While Monaco Grand Prix sports stunning graphics, some players may get bored with the high number of laps required to complete a race. This is also a difficult game to master. In the early stages of gameplay, many players will spend a lot of time running on the grass or crashing into the track walls. --Carrie Bell Pros: Reviews (13)
Terry Moore
Once you change from Arcade to Simulation mode, there's a major change. It gives you a lot more options to make the game feel more realistic, and is also a lot more difficult in control. In real life Formula 1, 1 slight mistake could cause major trouble. Monaco Grand Prix does an excellent job of that, so if you make even the slightest mistake on one of the curves, you could completely spin out. The pro is that it gives you the feeling of realistic Formula 1 racing, but the con would be that sometimes novices could get very frustrated with it losing control very frequently and spinning out. Without any question, the graphics are exceptional. The same thing goes for the track designs and layouts (Except for the names). A lot of excellent detail on the design. As for Retro mode, if you like to see the old days of Formula 1 and their courses, it's worth a look. I usually don't play Retro mode that much. The drivers are a con. All of them are fictional and include no real drivers. And some car manufactuers are left out, too. I usually like to race with someone that is a real driver, but I can work with fictional. I would recommend this to people who have had at least some experience with Formula 1 simulations, or for novices who don't mind a challenge (Unless you play Arcade Mode). It's still a very good racing simulation, overall and worth buying. Or another simulation I would recommend would be F-1 World Grand Prix.

Amazon.com Review While not all of Sydney 2000's 12 events use this tedious control system, the few that don't feature similarly shallow-as-a-puddle gameplay. What's worse,in order to make it to the Games in Olympic mode, players must "train" theirteam in a series of tiresome Virtual Gym exercises, which involve--you guessedit--lots and lots of button mashing. Thankfully, Sydney 2000's Arcade andCoaching modes allow players to jump right into any event. You won't get toexperience the game's Olympic fanfare, but you'll probably save yourself from arepetitive-stress injury. --Joe Hon Pros: Reviews (10)

It's kind of fun to blow up buildings when you miss, which might happen a lot unless you're using weapons that lock onto their targets. The graphics are nice, including having your armor fall off as you take damage. Sound isn't too annoying. The stages are sort of short (3 screens of underlings prior to the boss), and I've found the controls to be more difficult to handle than the enemies. One of the selectable characters does not have lock-on weapons, and I've not yet used him since my accuracy rate is low still. This might be more fun with a second player; I'll find out this weekend. Definitely worth playing once or twice, so rent it first if possible. ... Read more | |

I used tospend hours at a time at the local arcade playing Defender, Sinistar, andthe like, and though I was able to jump right into the games again as if notime had passed at all, the presentation was definitely lacking something. The menu system is cludgy and difficult to navigate. The configurableoptions really aren't that helpful. Also, even though the original graphicsand sound are preserved through the emulation, there seems to be aninordinate amount of flickering and blurring, making a couple of the gamesdifficult to see well and play even on a 27" television. So if youonly want to play the old games you love without having to make constanttrips to the change machine, this game is a good start, and you will indeedhave fun playing them. Be forewarned, though, that you'll probably end upwith the same feeling that I had -- that Midway took advantage of thesegames to release a quick, inexpensive, and poorly tested product, whichbegins to wear upon your game-playing patience after only an hour or two. ... A few annoynances:The goaltending is too good. This isn't a complaint about lack of scoring, but if the game is supposed to be realistic: 1) The players shouldn't be able to get so many 2-on-1 and breakaway opportunities, 2) When the players do get breakaways they rarely score (1 out of 25) and on one timers the goaltenders make more saves than in real-life. Also, when a goalie makes a save it seems like there are never any rebounds..even when the shot is to the blocker side.P>It's interesting because the old games like NHL '94 where it seemsed like you could score at will are about as realistic as the newer, vamped up goalies. Some of the newer games (NHL 2002) have made some strides in terms of reality where a player in front of the net can knock home a rebound from time-to-time.
