Editorial Review

Curious about those individuals who drive tricked-out Japanese cars? Youknow, the lowered Hondas with tires so wide they extend beyond the fenders, thesouped-up Toyotas with super-sized exhaust pipes, and the custom-painted Nissans withtinted windows and back windshields adorned with a adjectives such as "wicked"?

Wonder no more. Tokyo Xtreme Racer delves into the world of highway racingfeaturing customized Japanese autos. The basic premise: cruise the Tokyo highway untilyou find someone who looks a bit too cocky, flash your lights to signal your racingintentions, and commence speeding. The racing physics in the game aren't perfect and thegraphics may not bowl you over, but TXR is a lot of fun and it can be a very deepgame for dedicated players.

There are hundreds of prospective opponents, and plenty of ways to upgrade your car, butthe one element that will no doubt turn off American racing gamers is that there's onlyone track for the entire game. If you can handle that, and the lack of any apparent damagefrom collisions, then TXR is good fun. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • High replayability
  • Impressive replays
  • Unique concept and design
Cons:
  • Only one track
  • Graphics are nice, but don't push the Dreamcast's capabilities

5-0 out of 5 stars Possible the the most greatest racing ever...
Tough, i only tryed the PS2 version, but i can imagine that the DC and PS2 is just the same game. Tough, the graphics is not of Gran Turismo 3 value, this game rocks! It has a original game concept (something we havent seen in a racing game for a long time). The game is based upon the street racers of Tokyo, and how they race. You run around in the highways of Tokyo, using your lights to signal the desired opponoment you wish to race against, and if that opponoment accepts, its pedal-to-the-medal baby. Not only are capable to tune the engine and power of the veichle, but also to tune the looks of it with side skirts, wings and new tyres. Trust me... TXR is one of kind... It's both fun, addicting and entertaining. But, dont rely on the multiplayer tough, cause that part is really lame. Also the music could have been ten times better.

TXR is a superb buy you'll never run bored by...

When you first play this game all you do is "race", no special effects! The worst part is that the tires look like if you were stuck in mud. Not That smooth, In a way, this game is the worst dreamcast title yet, the graphics and environment are pretty good, but whats the use in there are no " special effects".
Sure , the price is [inexpensive] for [money]. This game is awful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Never-ending Replay
Of the dozens of games I have for DC, often I just choose to play some Giga Wing 2 after work.True appreciation of the game is undoubtedly reserved for shooter fans, though. The 3D, high-res graphics can be very impressive even for casual gamers, but the impetus to play and replay for better scores is not something for everyone.

There are LOTS of things to unlock, from over 80 pieces of very nice artwork to two "Secret Options" which require a very high cumulative score (saved to VMU after each session) to open up.

Technically, it is also under-rated even by some shooter fans. For instance, the "Vulcanon" effect--in which a certain high number of bonus medals (released from expiring enemies) on screen at once transforms into even higher scoring medals--discourages "kill and cover" medal collection. You have to sit back and brave more enemy fire BEFORE starting collecting your hard-earned bonus medals, or you'll lose the "Vulcanon" effect.

As a shooter fan, this comes in second on Dreamcast only to the import-only Zero Gunner 2, and ties the excellent, less-flashy but more-technical Mars Matrix.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but too short!
I'm a big 2D shooter fan, and I have to say that this is one of the funnest shooters I've ever played. It's also very beautiful. The graphics are really wonderful to look at. Also, the rechargable shield system the player's ship uses makes the game that much more interesting. Now, the bad news: this game is really short, and because of the infinite continues you get it's really easy as well. When I say short I mean you can finish this game inside of 15 or 20 minutes. It's fun while it lasts, though, and has surprising replay value. The graphics, gameplay, and music keep me coming back. If this game had more levels I'd give it five stars easily. Still, short game or not, I'm glad to have Gigawing 2 in my collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed....
I really liked the graphic on the cover, but the game is pretty disappointing. It's a shooter game that largely misses.

You choose between various cool looking fighters. But the actual game play is lame, you fire relentlessly on countless enemies, and hit your reflect button constantly.

I've rented this game and played it for about 20 minutes.I think that about does it for me and this game.

3-0 out of 5 stars More of the same
Not a whole lot of difference between this game and its predecessor, except for the price.Once again you pick a plane (slightly larger variety this time), blast off full speed ahead, and wade your way through tons of enemies and incalculable projectiles by triggering your reflect force incessantly and dropping bombs while that reflect guage replenishes itself. So what if you get killed in 30 seconds?Unlimited continues make beating the game a snap.Fans of truly old-school 2-D shooters will probably be turned off by the emphasis on using your bombs and your reflect force to do away with the absurd amount of gunfire on the screen instead of skillfully weaving your way in and out of the bursts while blasting away with weapons that demand some degree of accuracy.

But, once again, it can be a reasonably fun experience as long as you don't go in expecting some masterpiece like Square's EINHADER.Aside from the overwhelming odds you face in terms of adversaries capable of covering 99% of the screen with projectiles that spell instant death if you touch them, there's nothing remarkable about this game.If you feel you must own one Giga Wing or the other, I can't really think of a valid reason to go with the first instead of the second...this sequel is cheaper, easier to find, and boasts a little more variety and longevity.

Sorry for the simple review but, well...it's a simple game.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite live up to the visuals
If you check out reviews for Capcom's GigaWing 2 on the web or in magazines, some of the scores have been pretty harsh. However, I think the game is a fine accomplishment that, despite some shortcomings, is definitely worthy of a purchase.

The main reason for this is the game's overall presentation.Capcom has utilized the Dreamcast-friendly Naomi board to full glory, and everything is rendered in gorgeous 3D, resulting in outstanding visuals for a vertical shooter. The ship designs (planes, rather) are fantastic, using an almost retro-futuristic theme. Most planes, yours (you have five to choose from at the game's start) and the enemy's, are propeller-driven.The soundtrack is wonderful, using an orchestral score instead of tired techno. These changes from typical shooter molds are most welcome, and are almost worth the price of the game themselves.

Gameplay in GW2 is a shallower version of Mars Matrix (a superlative DC shooter also by Capcom).Your craft is outfitted with a Reflect Barrier, (which reflects enemy fire when activated), smart bombs, and an upgradeable main cannon. The pyrotechnics involved with these weapons are wonderful creations of color, brilliant explosions of destruction, and each plane's attacks are different. You progress through bullet-laden levels, destroying everything, then encounter a boss:typical shooter stuff.Problem is, GW2 is too short AND you have unlimited continues, which waters down the challenge considerably.Too bad there's no Mars Matrix-ish Shop Mode here! There is an art gallery to unlock, as well as the five planes from the first GigaWing, but once those are opened, there's little to challenge you. There is a 4-player mode, but the slowdown gets so bad the game's barely playable -- unfortunate!

Despite these flaws, GigaWing 2 has a grandiose feel to it that is compelling. You'll get immersed in the futuristic setting which is magnified by the design and graphics.Unfortunately, under the glossy surface there isn't a lot of meat. It's certainly worth the [money], and I don't feel it deserves the bad press it's gotten.Plus it'll probably be Capcom's last Dreamcast shooter. If the gameplay had matched the audio-visuals, GW2 would have been a classic. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars 8-Bit NES Games were better than this
I'm a long time gamer and I know my video games.Gigawing *appeared* to be a great 2D vertical old-school shooter for the DC and I was extremely pleased to see such games still being released on today's newer consoles. However, after paying the money and popping this into my DC, I began to play and within 20 minutes (I'm not joking here), the game was OVER!On my first try, I managed to beat the game's 5 stages.

Of course, being a DC game, I figured I had the game set on an easy difficulty level that only allowed access to several stages, but I read the manual and to my disbelief, that was the game in all of it's 5 stage glory!NOthing else here to extend the life of the game (save for some stupid boring cards you can earn showing various art from the game), Capcom just took the easy route and did a direct arcade port with few enhancments or additional levels. Two player mode makes the game even easier and shorter.

Why did Capcom allow this game to come out for the DC?I have no idea...arcade purists will enjoy the short, but extrememly bullet-ridden game (the game is virtually blanketed by enemy bullets at times...a testament to the fact that is was an arcade-only game where constant continues are necessary to bring profit to the arcade owner), but I've played BETTER and LONGER shooters on every system dating back to the Atari 2600!5 stages just doesn't cut it and Capcom should have added to it!

The few good points are: the game is 100% accurate to the arcade, the graphics are garish but good in a retro-arcadey kind of way, there's virtually no slowdown even during the heaviest bullet storms, and it's a good game for people who don't have a lot of time for gaming.

That said, you'd be best served by getting Mars Matrix, another bullet-heavy short arcade-ported shooter, but one that has been somewhat expanded with various DC modes and a cool shop option where you get to buy upgrades and such to extend the life of the game.Gigawing is simply not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST DREAMCAST GAME EVER!
THIS GAME IS THE BEST. IT HAS EXCELENT GRAPHICS AND THE CONTROLLES ARE SIMPLE.ALSO IF YOU LIKE FLIGHT SIMULATERS IT IS GREAT. YOU CAN HAVE UP TO 4 PLAYERS. THE ONE DOWNSIDE IS IT IS VERY SHORT.IT TOOK ME 1/2 AN HOUR TO BEAT IT MY FIRST TIME PLAYING. ALL-IN-ALL IT IS A GREAT GAME!

3-0 out of 5 stars "Twitch" gamers beware...this is a mere button-masher
Giga Wing is a vertically-scrolling shooter that casts off the strategic elements that fans of the genre often look for in favor of exaggerating the action to preposterous levels.Enemies don't just hound you persistently and shoot at you in big bursts...they totally blanket the screen with fire that simply cannot be avoided with slick maneuvering and well-placed shots.Hence the "reflect force" ... a tool that creates a force field around your aircraft to repel the countless projectiles back at your foes and produce oodles of items to snatch. You can also wipe the screen clean with smart bombs, which produce similar results.

There are several different planes to choose from, each with different standard weapons which can be upgraded via appropriate power-ups, but not a great deal of variety is added to the game because of this, because fighting your way to the end is really just a matter of using your reflect force at every opportunity and dropping bombs whenever the screen gets cluttered (which is just about all the time). You're given unlimited continues and when you use one you pick up at the exact same point you left off, so there's not much incentive to be careful where you fly or to deploy your bombs conservatively.Pretty much anyone can pick up this game and beat it on their first attempt with the proper amount of patience.Continuing will reset your score (which can be up to 16 digits) but most people won't want to put themselves through the frustration of finding the one square inch on the entire TV screen where it's safe to be when the enemies are bombarding you with gunfire from about a thousand different directions at once.

In light of this criticism, my three-star rating may seem too high.Well, in spite of the simplistic gameplay and unremarkable graphics and sounds (not to mention the feeble Japanese-to-English translation), Giga Wing is sort of fun, at least for a while. It's mercifully short, and if you're not expecting a masterpiece of old-school 2-D shooting bliss, you may find some merit in it.Casual shooter fans are advised to pass it by;die-hards may want to break it out every once in a while, but chances are it won't hold too glorious a spot in their libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet
Having first been a fan of the game from the arcade, I was elated when I found out that Capcom made a version of it for the Dreamcast. When I first bought it I immediately noticed that the graphics were not as sharp as the arcades, but that thought quickly left my mind as I began to play the game. All of a sudden I found myself emerged in a realm of gaming that I had not been in for quite some time. If you are a fan of shooters, then I highly recommend picking this title up. The only drawback to this game is that it is relatively short, but with three characters and hidden ships to find, the replay value makes up for that small inconvenience. A short, but sweet game indeed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what one would expect from Capcom
Searching for a great traditional 2 player shooting game for Dreamcast? Sorry, but you will have to keep on searching.Giga Wing is just not up to the standard of quality I've come to expect from Capcom. It's too short, ridiculously unfair in the later levels, and the graphics leave something to be desired.Casual gamers may see my complaints as trivial, but I think most hardcore gamers that have experienced the old greats like 1943 and Raiden 1-2 will agree with me.My advice...stay away from Giga Wing, and get Raiden Project or G. Darius for Playstation instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really FUN game
This game was even better than I expected it to be. It's easy to get a grasp of the controls but pretty challenging. You have a choice of some awesome O'Niell sponsored surfers, each with their own highlights movie you can watch. The beaches are solid and the weather controls really give you a chance to differ your environment. Good graphics are accompanied by a huge variety of camera angles so you can control the surfer from afar or see through the surfer's eyes for a more intense approach to a wave. You'll like this game if you like sports challenge games. Also, you can play with up to 3 other people so can rip on your buddies.

Sega's Virtua Striker was supposed to be the Dreamcast'sfirst great soccer game, but as it turns out, Striker Pro 2000outplays the opposition with lively on-field action and a wealth ofoptions to boot.

Striker Pro will wow soccer fans with 130 teams from the bestEuropean leagues as well as from all over the world. There are threelevels of competition from national to international cup play, whichcan be unlocked once players prove in their worth in training mode.

Striker Pro scores early with its options, letting playersadjust weather conditions, injury time, and penalty settings as well astoggle between the analog and digital control pads. Speed anddifficulty can also be bumped up to taste. On the field, teams play up,back, or somewhere in the middle, with the score often determining ateam's formation. Animations and graphics are Dreamcast quality, andthe control is intuitive. In fact, we'll go so far as to say thatStriker Pro 2000 is the most perfect soccer video game thatwe've played thus far. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • 130 teams and three different cup modes
  • Flawless control and a helpful training mode

1-0 out of 5 stars Why torture yourself
Someone below wrote that it dosen't get better...but it does UEFA Dream Soccer is WAY better and is a Dreamcast soccer game worth a purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars It can't get better than this.
Striker Pro 2000 is the best soccer game other than Fifa 2002 on Gamecube. Too bad the players aren't real players, though. But you get a whole bunch of international and European club teams. Practiceand training is pretty boring. Passing, kicking, slides, chest traps, and even bicycle kicks are all realistic. You can play in the snow or rain, day or night. Being a goalie is fun once you save and catch the ball. But be careful not to score for yur opponents. The gameplay is very realistic and so is everything else. So, buy it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great soccer game for the Dreamcast
Ever since my purchase of the Sega Dreamcast I was hoping that Sega Sports would make World Cup Soccer 2K2 or something like that in there great sports series, but they did not make one and I was very disappointed. But then I came across Striker Pro 2000. The game sounded great, had amazing graphics and cost only 15 dollars!

Once I got the game I was amazed by the realistic gameplay, graphics and the little things that make soccer so much fun. When you first get this game there are about 25 or so European teams you can choose from including Manchester, Muchen, Monaco and many others. There are also 72 international teams including Brazil, USA, Germany, France, and Argentina that you have to ulock by completing all of five of the challenging practice stages. You can also create up to eight teams and create players to up-date the teams.

There are a few things that are flawed in this game. The announcers are good but their intro to the game is always the same and they aren't very interesting. Also the goalies are very dumb and you can easily score 3 or 4 goals each game.

Overall this is by far the best soccer game on the Dreamcast. I highly recommend this game for soccer fans around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this game!!!!!!
What really, really surprises me is that this game is from the same company as one of the worst video games ever made, Sydney Olympics 2000 (Infogrames.) If you wanna read my review for that game too, go right ahead. Anyway, there er 130 club teams and the most realistic soccer game I ever played. Although I payed ...for it used, it was worth it. There are also a total of 72 international teams including my own Armenia, Brazil, U.S.A., France, Canada, and Argentina. The moves are so realistic. I've gotten so used to this game that I can score as much as 30 goals a game and keep them from getting 10 shots on me! To unlock international teams, you have to pass the fun but hard 5 categories of practice. But for those of you who own this game and don't know this code, you could get all the international teams and extra tournaments by doing this: Open the game. On the main menu, go to options. On the options menu, don't go into anything. Just press the up arrow twice, the right arrow twice, and the Y button three times and the Infogrames mark will inflate twice meaning you got all the teams. Pretty cool, huh? This game has never gotten me bored and I have had it for more than a year. This game rocks!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great game

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best on Dreamcast
If it wasn't for this game, I would have sold my Dreamcast years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail the Worms
Newcomers and fans of Worms alike will enjoy this game.Worms World Party offers everything a gamer wants. The point of the game is to destroy enemy worms, or collect certain objects, or a combination of both.It might sound simple, but there is a great deal of strategy involved. The one player mode offers a large variety of play, and will keep even the best gamers busy for quite a while. Also, Worms World Party is one of the best multiplayer games out there. It only takes 49 blocks on your VMU, and it's Jump Pack compatible.Selling for around 20 dollars, there's absolutely no reason not to pick up this game.If you're a Worms fan, Worms World Party won't dissapoint you.If you've never played a Worms game, you don't know what you're missing out on.Buy Worms World Party. You won't regret it.

I just bought this game the other day and i thought it was gonna be ok,but once i started gettin into it, it was great. The graphics arent the best, but the gameplay is good. The funny sounds and the way they manuever themselves is great.Blowing the ... out of worms, is got to be the funnest thing i've played so far.And if ya got no friends dont worry, hook it up sega net and play people across the globe.for only [price]this game is must, if u and your friends like blowing up worms with bazookas, grenades, miniguns, flying sheep a various animals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, why?
...On a 36" TV, the worms are still microscopic. The graphics, ... The point is to fight opposing worms. All of the worms look exactly the same, cluttering the tiny workable area.Any vast attack will kill your own worms before the ones intended. I tried to like this game.I played it for hours. Then I took it back to the store, where the lady said, "Not another one!"This game should've never passed the cutting-room floor. 1 star for the graphics staying true to the Atari 2600 origional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friend got homework, no problem
The long know worms game is coming to the internet on your Dreamcast.Using the modem you can play on the internet. The game is very cheap;...and game is so much fun too.(If you're playing with someone)All thou the graphics are not perfect, the funny voices make up for it.Team 17 does a great job on this game.I must stress that you sould be over 12 to play, the game does have lots of bad words. If you havn't played the other games, you will known what I mean. ;) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A solid Tetris Incarnation
I can't say that my experience with the "Next Tetris" has been afflicted with any of the flaws witnessed by my peers -- it hasn't. It has, in fact, been the single most satisfying Tetris experience that I have ever had the joy of... experiencing.

With a wide variety of play-modes, a compelling soundtrack and online play, even a Tetris novice can fritter away hours in a single sitting.

What else can I say? It's Tetris.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid It
Although it has a few good ideas (3d gameboard rotation and breakable pieces), this is one of the worst Tetris incarnations I have witnessed. Here are it's problems:

1) There just isn't much to it - nothing to unlock, no special features, etc.It has almost no replay value, especially for a single player. After an hour or two, it's useless.

2) It is slow and buggy. There is often noticable lag between controller input and onscreen action.I have witnessed at least 3 separate bugs during the 4 times I have played it (and it wasn't worth playing more than 4 times).

3) It is limited to 2 players. Also, the Classic Tetris that it provides is only single-player.

4) The speed and difficulty advance far too quickly.Plus, since it saves each player's level, you are forced to play at the level at which you left off.Essentially, you hit a wall after a few games and cannot proceed. This "feature" does do a good job of allowing players of different skills to compete, but it was taken too far.

5) It has lame music and lackluster graphics.

For a great version of Tetris, see "The New Tetris" for the Nintendo64 - it's absolutely wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This game is a buggy mess
Do not buy this game!!Here is why:

1)Neither Sega nor Crave have any mention of the game on their respective web sites and neither does ...the site mentioned in the instruction manual. They aren't too proud of this one.

2)I have found several bugs in the game including:

a)random changing of names on the players list to blank spaces or a single square box

b)on 2 seperate occasions a falling piece has fallen through one block to rest on a block immediately below where it should be

c)while playing a 2 player game, the player 1 controller started to control both games being played (happened 2 times in a row)

d)sometimes at the beginning of a round an extra second ticks of the clock before pieces are allowed to move

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much to offer
Roadsters has poor control, and the graphics dont push the Dreamcast. It has a pretty good concept, but everything else is bad.Buy a game like Metropolis Street Racer, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, or one of the Crazy Taxi's instead of this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could Be Better
The game was almost unfinished, like they had to get it out by a certain deadline. For instance the two cars on the back of the cd case aren't in the game. The steering is practically impossible without the steering wheel thing that comes seperately for like ...I suggest you don't waste your time and money on this game.

2-0 out of 5 stars could be better
This game is alright. The turning is practically impossible using a controller.I suggest getting the steering wheel hook up thing. The boards are cool and the cars are better, but the gameplay is pretty difficult.

1-0 out of 5 stars This game is bad
I bought it thinking it would be a great game, not knowing Titus' lousy reputation. When i got it home and started playing it i was supprised at how bad it was. How bad? Only some of the cars are licensed, and all the other ones are real cars but the physics are way off. No damage, and when you ram into another car, that car doesn't slow down' you just bounce of. When you hit a tree, the tree bounces of the ground and disapears. What really stumped me was how on the back of the game CD, there is a picture of a Porsche Boxter and a Shelby Cobra racing. Well guess what! Niether one of those cars are available in the game! The worst part is the graphics. You'd be better off with Mario Cart for Super NES for good graphics! Do not buy this game! I bought it, and i traded it in for Test Drive 6. If you already bought it, I suggest you do the same thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this game!
This is the worst racing game I have ever played!

Here's why: 1. awful graphcs(the game looks like a sega saturn racing game!) 2. a lot of pop up( things just seem to pop up in front of you, and it is distracting! 3. theload times are so long that I started to get very upset. 4. you barely haveany control over your car!

There are a lot more reasons why this game isbad, but I returned it on the second day, so I didn't see anymore.thepeople who made this game obviously have no idea what they're doing, andprobably don't know that DREAMCAST IS A 128 BIT SYSTEM, IS SUPPOSED TO HAVEVERY LITTLE LOAD TIME, AND NO POP UP! Don't buy it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL FOOTBALL GAME EVER MADE.
Bad is a to nice of word for this game.

1-0 out of 5 stars This game sucks
This game should be banned, because its like you are just wasting your money. the game play is horrible, i hate the controls. madden 2001 is the best!just about everything about nfl quarterback club sucks, if you like this game than i suggest you check with your doctor

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Game EVER
This is beyond any shadow of a doubt the worst game that has ever been made.I would rather play Pong than this game. The controls are totally inaccurate, and the game is beyond slow.If you want to play a good football game, look elsewhere because this disk is best used as a frisbee.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy
This game is terrible! It is almost impossible to play defense on this game. Very difficult to tackle and impossible to cover the wide outs. If your going to buy a game buy NFL2K.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save your money ! get nfl 2k1!
Although this game has improved over last years version it still does notmeasure up to nfl 2k or even the playstations versions of madden andgameday 2001. Wide open receivers drop easy catches the computer defensiveline often cheats and you can still gain big yards with any quaterbackrunning the bootleg. I was playing the super bowl and had a big lead andall of a sudden late in the game the computer started controlling theaction and i just managed to hang on to win( plays repeating that i didn'tcall- ext). Okay for a rental but, if you must have a game get one of theother titles that are coming out, and leave this one in the store. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Driving games sure have come a long way since the 1982 classic arcade hit Pole Position and, with true-to-life graphics, Monaco Grand Prix for the Dreamcast races ahead of the competition. Based on one of the world's oldest and toughest races, this impressive game features an innovative four-point physics engine to monitor and control, as well as the ability to go head-to-head against a friend or the computer. Choose from 22 racers on a variety of skill levels, and three gaming modes. The arcade mode lets you choose from a single race or a championship rally, as well as time attack and free run options. The simulation mode brings real-life conditions (such as weather, car damage, and lighting) to the racing action. If you race in competition, there are 12 circuits to conquer, including the Monaco Grand Prix. A retro mode allows you to race vintage '50s cars on an older track.

While Monaco Grand Prix sports stunning graphics, some players may get bored with the high number of laps required to complete a race. This is also a difficult game to master. In the early stages of gameplay, many players will spend a lot of time running on the grass or crashing into the track walls. --Carrie Bell

Pros:

  • Unique retro race level
  • Pit stops are very realistic
  • Cars and tracks modeled to Grand Prix specifications
Cons:
  • Controls are more difficult without an optional steering wheel controller
  • Novice drivers may find some races too difficult

3-0 out of 5 stars Not So Great
Grand Prix is not that great, even for a driving sim. I used to work at Sega as a game tester, and spent countless hours testing this title. As a racing game, it's subpar. As a sim, I'd say it was average. Yes, there is a learning curve and it does take a while to get a handle on the game (especially when using the standard controller), but it's not worth the effort because the game is boring. The soundtrack is lame (possibly with the exception of the German track), and once you do master the tracks and levels, there's still no sense of satisfaction. If you want a challenge and don't mind the static gameplay, this is probably an ideal title for you. If you want something easier and more dynamic, I suggest TNN Motorsports Hardcore Heat, Tokyo Xtreme, Suzuki Alstare Extreme, or Metropolis Street Racer.

2-0 out of 5 stars disapointing
I purchased a used copy of Monico Grand Prix and was verysatisfied with the service provided for buying used games. However this version was not compatible for use with my Sega racing wheel, and the Sega people were unwilling or unable to help me configure my racing wheel with the game. Be careful about compatibility when you purchase used games! Playing a racing game with a regular control is a real bummer.

2-0 out of 5 stars it`s OKAYandnothing more to this Cheater..........!
I`mafrequent gamer of Formula 1 games.i played it since 1998.Then it was Playstation, now it`s Dreamcast version of it.First of all, when i purchased this game for almost ... in India,i thought it would bring some cool stuff ,better than thePlaystation`s.When i saw the Intro,i was fascinated and thought that the game would also be presented in the same style as Dreamcast is a 128bit game system. But when it came to sitting in the Driver`s Cockpit,i was rather Dissapointed.yes,true.But i don`t know how some friends gave such backing up to this LOSER game in all of the reviews i`ve read so far.Perhaps i`m the only person to have given bad criticism to this SO CALLED non-recognisedgame.In my viewtheUBI Soft owners should have done much better improvements to the non-recognised cars other than thesameFerrari`sScarlet colour and the McLaren`sSilver colour.Alland all i`ve been decieved and been robbed a whole amount of ...- Rs,(indian currency, means ahuge to common indians)from the creators of this game.so,for the intro andsound effects i give 2 stars to this game

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good F-1 simulation, but a few weak spots included.
I must say, even if Monaco Grand Prix is not endorsed by the FIA, it's still a very good simulation. Although if you are a novice, I would recommend staying with the arcade mode. It may not be as realistic compared to Simulation mode, but it's also a lot easier and not as many bells and whistles. The courses do not have their real names, but are by the country that they're located in, except for Monaco.

Once you change from Arcade to Simulation mode, there's a major change. It gives you a lot more options to make the game feel more realistic, and is also a lot more difficult in control. In real life Formula 1, 1 slight mistake could cause major trouble. Monaco Grand Prix does an excellent job of that, so if you make even the slightest mistake on one of the curves, you could completely spin out. The pro is that it gives you the feeling of realistic Formula 1 racing, but the con would be that sometimes novices could get very frustrated with it losing control very frequently and spinning out.

Without any question, the graphics are exceptional. The same thing goes for the track designs and layouts (Except for the names). A lot of excellent detail on the design.

As for Retro mode, if you like to see the old days of Formula 1 and their courses, it's worth a look. I usually don't play Retro mode that much.

The drivers are a con. All of them are fictional and include no real drivers. And some car manufactuers are left out, too. I usually like to race with someone that is a real driver, but I can work with fictional.

I would recommend this to people who have had at least some experience with Formula 1 simulations, or for novices who don't mind a challenge (Unless you play Arcade Mode). It's still a very good racing simulation, overall and worth buying. Or another simulation I would recommend would be F-1 World Grand Prix.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is sweet!
This is the best racing game ive ever played. As the other reviewers have said, it is a simulator. You almost have to be a race engineer to set up the cars before the races. If that sounds like too much hold on because you can also play an arcade mode which lets you race without a high difficulty as well as not worrying about the car setup. So really this game offers the best of both worlds, simulator and arcade. It also has a retro car series which I think is just as fun as the new cars. This is a good one, im glad I bought it. ... Amazon.com Review

The official video game of the 2000 Olympics, Sydney 2000 borrowsheavily from the gameplay of the 1983 arcade classic Track and Field.Players "power" their virtual athletes by hammering on two buttons in analternating sequence as fast as possible, with the manipulation of a thirdbutton required at certain times to perform a particular action. Unfortunately, the novelty here wears off pretty darn quick, especially when using theDreamcast's standard controller, which is just barely adequate for such frenziedbutton mashing; you really need an arcade stick for this one.

While not all of Sydney 2000's 12 events use this tedious control system, the few that don't feature similarly shallow-as-a-puddle gameplay. What's worse,in order to make it to the Games in Olympic mode, players must "train" theirteam in a series of tiresome Virtual Gym exercises, which involve--you guessedit--lots and lots of button mashing. Thankfully, Sydney 2000's Arcade andCoaching modes allow players to jump right into any event. You won't get toexperience the game's Olympic fanfare, but you'll probably save yourself from arepetitive-stress injury. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Makes for an easy-to-pick-up multiplayer game
  • TV-style coverage includes replays shown from multiple camera angles
Cons:
  • Shallow gameplay involves little more than mindless button mashing
  • Arcade stick more of a requirement than an option
  • Not much fun as a single-player gaming experience

2-0 out of 5 stars Sydney 2000
OK if you like pushing buttons rapidly

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply horrible.
Not many video games are there that make my stomach ache over buying. But this one crossed that thin dividing line. The playability is so unbelievably disgusting that I can't even explain it. If your looking for some anthritis or want a couple of numb fingers, then go ahead and waste your hard earned money on this graphical disaster. But if you would rather get your money's worth, I would reccommend, almost anything!

1-0 out of 5 stars What do you think my Dreamcast controller is, a drum??!!
This game really [is not good] due to the fact that in every single solitary event you have to repeatedly press A and X. I'm not gonna break my fingers and my controller over that. The only game that's a little fun in it is kayaking, in which I was able to win. But everything else, including kayaking, was frustraing me and my hand. I couldn't even know what was going on with the cycling. The fitness excersices also [were not good] because they really didn't help you. I returned this game to the store the very next hour. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it now while it's ...!!!!
I don't care what the reviews say, if this game is ... then who wouldn't want to get it? Sega Bassb Fishing is getting a bad rap as well in reviews but now that it is ... as well, who wouldn't get it? I am!! are you???

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for a while.......
Some say this game is horrible and a waste of money. If you ask me this is a fun game to play with a friend or by yourself. The one downfall of this game is you arm gets a workout and starts to hurt after playing for a while. But everything else in the game makes it all worth it, like building up you person in each event to try and win the gold metal.I use to rent the Playstation version, that's how I first heard of this game. Then when the Dreamcast version came out I bought it as soon as I saw it.The graphics, game play, sound and basically everything else is so much better on Dreamcast. This game is fun for the first week or two when you get it, but as most games you will get bored of it.But for 20 bucks its well worth it for those two weeks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable But Short
When I first played this game, I didn't really like it because of the controls. But after some practice, and after reading the game's manual over and over, things started to be easy and clear for me. Very nice and fun game. I wish it had 20 or 30 levels instead of only 5. Very promising game. Graphics are beautiful, fast and smooth. Weapons and Characters are great. Bosses are cool. Scenes are excellent. I like the replays that you get after blasting each boss. Get the Tremor Pack with it. RECOMMENDED GAME.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't get charged up
Wouldn't go so far as to say this was a blast to play. As a casual gamer, this game is worth playing a few times but it hasn't killed my life anywhere near as much as Phantasy Star Online or Soul Caliber (heck, even as much as Evolution). Trying to get a handle on the controls is probably what's really keeping my interest in the game. You use the triggers to dash side-to-side. The X, Y and B buttons charge up one of your 3 weapons, and you fire with the A button. The analog stick moves the cursor. I've not been able to strafe (yet, if possible), nor can I dodge and continue to charge weapons up. You have to charge a weapon up minimally to do any damage. Aiming the cursor with the joystick is pretty challenging, as is gaging where to hit the ground with a missle if you are trying to nail a group of monsters. Actually, reminds me of that old Sega game Alien Storm or something like that (where the players ran around with Ghostbusters-type proton packs).

It's kind of fun to blow up buildings when you miss, which might happen a lot unless you're using weapons that lock onto their targets. The graphics are nice, including having your armor fall off as you take damage. Sound isn't too annoying.

The stages are sort of short (3 screens of underlings prior to the boss), and I've found the controls to be more difficult to handle than the enemies. One of the selectable characters does not have lock-on weapons, and I've not yet used him since my accuracy rate is low still.

This might be more fun with a second player; I'll find out this weekend. Definitely worth playing once or twice, so rent it first if possible. ... Read more

Sega's new NFL 2K is the type of game that makes a very, very good first impression. For starters, this is without a doubt the best-looking sport video game ever produced on any platform--hands down. Not only are the players more detailed and lifelike than in any other game we've seen, but they move fluidly and with such an impressive array of animations that it's sometimes hard to forget you're playing a game and not just watching one on TV. You can even see the breath of each player during cold-weather games--we're talking graphical realism here, make no mistake. But NFL 2K goes way beyond skin-deep. This is an excellent football game, with gameplay that's easy to pick up at novice level but hard to master as you increase the level of difficulty. The game's controls are the most intuitive of any we've seen, and the playcalling interface is simply the best that anyone has ever come up with for a football title. And just when you think it can't get any better, you discover features like the full-league fantasy draft, a tutorial mode, extensive game and season statistics, and excellent play and player creation options. Put simply, this game makes every other football game on every other platform look dated. Even the play-by-play and color commentary are better and more fluid than any we've seen elsewhere. If you have even a passing interest in football and are planning to pick up a Sega Dreamcast console, you owe it to yourself to get this game as well. It is the new standard by which all future football--and sports--games will be judged.--Michael Ryan ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good looks, awful gameplay
Don't pay a penny for this, folks. Move on to an EA game. There is very little in the way of actual physics calculations between players in this game, every interaction is merely a scripted animation. RBs are stopped in full stride by shoestring tackles. WRs run their routes at half speed while the DBs shadow them *IN FRONT* of their routes. Offensive line programming is horrible. Guards and tackles blow assignments on EVERY play, doubling up on a DT and allowing LBs to come free and tackle the RB at the handoff. There is no player momentum, a flaw I've noticed in a number of Sega Sports games, meaning any player can stop in mid-stride and immediately run full stride in the opposite direction. Sit back and watch the computer play: 3and out, 3 and out, 3 and out... This was an incomplete game that should not have been released. So what if it looks pretty? It plays like crap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost great.
The 2K1 version of this game is much better, if for only one reason:you can actually gain yards rushing.Just try to have a 1,000 yard season with any premier back in this (2K) version.Other than that, great graphics, good game speed, and all the bells and whistles any sports game geek can handle!

5-0 out of 5 stars for the Sega DreamCast
I thought with Playstations Madden 99 I had the only football game I'd need for years. But when my brother got the Game Cube, Playstation 2, and XBox, he gave me his Dreamcast, and a few games along with it, NFL 2K being one of them. Turns out, this is a great game. The graphics are good and game play is as good as anything on Playstation. You can force trades to create your dream team, and while you can't play a franchise, you can save your season. The passing game is a little easy, bu it makes up by making a tougher running game. And lik most of Dream Cast's sports games, it is well done and fun. Would I pick this over Madden 99? probably not, but it is a nice addition, and the two games are fun to own together.

5-0 out of 5 stars NFL 2K: An Instant Classic
Ok, so i guess you want NFL 2K1 or 2K2, right? Why would you be reading this if you wanted 2K1 or 2K2. Oh.. don't have the dough. I see. Well, this game is the start of the best football game intallment ever to grace a console. Trust me, you'll still have the same amount of intensity and sweaty handed fun in NFL 2K as in 2K1 or 2K2. Let me put it this way, short and sweet (I hate writing about a game's details, in fact im going to go play it right after Im done typing this)this game is the only game you will ever need! As soon as you buy this game you will be addicted to it and play it at least on a daily basis. Does that sound good enough? Well, it should. Listen, this game is really inexpensive right now, so if you have a Dremcast, go out and BUY THIS GAME!! Now! Alright, cool, I hafta go play this game now. Later~

4-0 out of 5 stars GTIMade a hit game!!
This game rocks. I never could get past the 4th level, though. You can train with bombers, or you can do a mission. You mainly use fighters in that. I love the graphics. The sky and water looks really cool! Your planes are cool. I love the Spitfire. I totally reccomend this game.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Game!
The game is great! In training, you can practice dropping bombs w/ a bomber. You can do missions, too.On the first mission, you patrol the coast. On the 2nd, you start fighting. These missions sometimes get a little tedious, but they are still very fun!I recommend this game for ages 8+.Overall, a super game!!
(realistic WWII combat)

3-0 out of 5 stars Iron Aces Review
I purcheased Air Force Delta before I bought this game, so I was hoping to be able to select missions to play again with different planes, so I felt a bit let down by this one. However, it is a neat game, and I do have a lot of fun with it.The planes are very realistic, and you have the option to hang around and fight a little longer even after you've completed your mission.Overall, a pretty good game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game!No Matter What Anybody Says.
I don't know why some people are knocking this game. It's not easy like some people say.I'd like to see them blow up a shipon a first pass. Then maybe they'd change their minds. You can set the difficulty to hard and play with a limited amount of bullets. This games graphics are very good and the control is good as well. And when you fly, you're not always killing things as some people expect. There's a thing called patrol I beleive. You have to fly out and look for things. And through playing it I've come across only three missions of patroling. This game is very fun and anybody who's a fan of war type games will love it.The historic planes in this game are also very cool. This game is a very good buy, and well worth the five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars One star is way too much for this game
How can a game be so bad?It has all the elements of failure, annoying music and sound effects, every mission is the same thing over and over.Kill the enemy don't get shot down, wow, fun.And there are some missions where you get torpedo a ship, I know it sounds cool but believe me it's not, it's easy and it gets old fast. They even added some missions where you fly around and look for stuff, why is beyond me.The control is extremely poor and the multiplayer mode isn't much at all.The only good thing it has is it's relatively good graphics.Which aren't much.So do yourself a favor by saving your money for a worthy flight sim. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars arcade trills for free
Greatest Arcade Hits is a very thrilling with six really cool arcade games.Every single one of the games is multi-player and full of manydifferent exciting levels! My brother and I spent very long periods oftime playing multi-player on all the different levels. My favorite one outof all the games would have to be ROBOT.I thought that because I like thechallenge and the interesting characters as you move on through the levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relive the Humbling and Challenging Classics
For anyone who spent their tuition on Defender and Robotron 2084, lost sleep over Joust, and was haunted by Sinistar, this is a must-purchase.The games are emulated seamlessly and bear a finer, more distinct resolution than the playstation equivalent package. You'll be calling insick to work, and all the old nostalgia will bring everyone at thewatercooler to your place, sans quarters.Let's keep the classics coming;they should live on every new console because of their timeless gameplayand innovative designs which are largely mimicked to this day.

2-0 out of 5 stars No more than what it claims to be
It's difficult to justify being disappointed by a suite of games which are exactly duplicated from their previous life as stand-alone arcade games, but somehow I still expected a little more than what I got.

I used tospend hours at a time at the local arcade playing Defender, Sinistar, andthe like, and though I was able to jump right into the games again as if notime had passed at all, the presentation was definitely lacking something. The menu system is cludgy and difficult to navigate. The configurableoptions really aren't that helpful. Also, even though the original graphicsand sound are preserved through the emulation, there seems to be aninordinate amount of flickering and blurring, making a couple of the gamesdifficult to see well and play even on a 27" television.

So if youonly want to play the old games you love without having to make constanttrips to the change machine, this game is a good start, and you will indeedhave fun playing them. Be forewarned, though, that you'll probably end upwith the same feeling that I had -- that Midway took advantage of thesegames to release a quick, inexpensive, and poorly tested product, whichbegins to wear upon your game-playing patience after only an hour or two. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST HOCKEY GAMES EVER!!!
THe ONLY bad point of this game is that ther isnt enough fighting!
fights arent easy enough to start on this one like some other games.
The graphics are great anf the teams are realistic and play as good as they are(or were at the time)
I got alot of mileage out of my copy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for its time...but not great
Good overall hockey sim...the graphics and animation are a step above most predecessors.

A few annoynances:The goaltending is too good. This isn't a complaint about lack of scoring, but if the game is supposed to be realistic: 1) The players shouldn't be able to get so many 2-on-1 and breakaway opportunities, 2) When the players do get breakaways they rarely score (1 out of 25) and on one timers the goaltenders make more saves than in real-life.

Also, when a goalie makes a save it seems like there are never any rebounds..even when the shot is to the blocker side.P>It's interesting because the old games like NHL '94 where it seemsed like you could score at will are about as realistic as the newer, vamped up goalies. Some of the newer games (NHL 2002) have made some strides in terms of reality where a player in front of the net can knock home a rebound from time-to-time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid tranformation to a better console.
We all know that Sega had some excelent hockey games on the Genesis. This is a good follow-up, as it is fast, and looks really good. I like the game, and the gameplay is original simulation stuff. It is a great game, but by no means up to the high standards that 2K2 reached two whole years later.

5-0 out of 5 stars NHL 2k is the Bomb
This game is so great you can't put it into words. But i'll try. The graphics are one of the best around. Why go out and buy a xbox or PS2 and a hockey game when you can have the same fun with a system and a NHL 2k just as good. It has real life like sounds, amazing checks and more. I can't wait to buy it. I'd rate it a 10 star if i could.

5-0 out of 5 stars great game
this has been a good game. i enjoy playing it. i especially like the replays. this game has excellent graphincs and can keep you playing for long periods of time. i especially like the checking and it is great to play against a friend. i just hate those refs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Why is there no minus feature for rating games like this
This game is slow, boring, lacks tricks, fun and speed. I rather go out and get SARS

2-0 out of 5 stars this thing was really bad
i think that it is so booring

5-0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING!!!
Jetski Racing - A truly original idea that was too long in coming. A nice change of pace from other (same old, same old) race games. Graphics are great, easy to jump right in and start playing! Plenty of game-play options, various tracks, etc...I think it's a blast & it's one of my favorite Dreamcast games. I'm not a big fan of racing simulation games, but I really like this 1!

3-0 out of 5 stars I Finished This Game The SAME Day I bought it!!!
This is way to easy.It took me many months of periodic play to finish Wave Race 64 on N64, but this I beat in one afternoon. That's right, one afternoon!Granted I only spent $*.** for it new, but still I expected more than that. The graphics are pretty and bright but the sound of the jet skis is very annoying and the water is barely affected by your presence.Tracks aren't very challenging and you NEVER fall from your jet ski no matter what you hit. There are barely any control options just throttle and steering. It was pretty fun while it lasted, but with no difficulty setting to up the challenge I recommend that seasoned racers rent this one, or buy it real cheap and trade it in once you're finished (the next day!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Surf Rocet Racers
This game is fuuuun. You get 6 characters. At first it's hard, but onse you get the hang of it you'l think it's fun. each character has his or her cirtin obilaties. thar's Championships, Tricks and techniques, Hazards & obstacles, time attack, vs battle (2 players),options, & library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very lifelike, but not as much entertainment as expected.
I must say, a very well job done with the graphics of the balls, tables, and maybe even the cue sticks. You can set up the ball to go almost precisely where you want it to in 7 different games. You can easily unlock 5 more and get even more. Billiards is fun, the rocket launcher is fun, and the 24 cents game is fun and the graphics are all incredible, but the rest, we need a little more entertainment. But still, it's the only pool game found on Dreamcast and you probably couldn't make it much funner than this, anyway, so, a good bargain it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maximum Pool is a great pool game for any system!
Maximum Pool is worth the time and money for all ages. It's very easy to learn. I like the comments of Jim, Amy, Linda, and Buddy, although Brad is a bit rude! This game has 7 games. When you beat each of the characters in the highest level, you unlock 5 more games. Then to unlock 5 new shaped tables for the 5 new games, beat them in the highest level again. My favorite game is the unlockable 24 cents. It's very addictive, and if your being crushed by your opponent, you caneasily comeback by sinking dimes and the quarter. The graphics and the realistic play are unbelievable. You can either use guidelines or not. What cracks me up is when the woman screams sometimes when the ball flies
off the table. I really don't know why I didn't give this 5 stars. Maybe it's just not perfect, but extremely fun indeed!

2-0 out of 5 stars 10 minutes of fun
I have recently bought this game, and i was really thinking it was going to be fun. I like pool, when I personally play, but the game plays the game for you. It is not a challange, and after 10 minutes you will put it away and move on. My suggestion is to save your money and by something that you know you will enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fun game
Maximum Pool is a very good game that will probably be overlooked this christmas season. It offers a bunch of classic and new pool games. Best of all, you can play them all online against other Dreamcast players or PC players. The classic games are, Carom Billiards, Snooker, 8 ball, 9 ball, Rotation, Cutthroat and Basic Pocket Billiards. The new games are, Rocket Ball, Chameleon Ball, Mad Bomber, Poker and 24 cents. The new games can also be played on some differently shaped tables you unlock by beating the computer players. The computer AI is good, but not impossible to beat. Try it out, you might be surprised.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME
This game is great.... It offers ONLINE GAME PLAY which is also a plus.A must have for the dreamcast! ... Read more
