5-0 out of 5 stars Another FF classic
This is not your average Final Fantasy game, but still an enjoyable one. This is more of a strategy game than an RPG. It is a four-chapter game. The first chapter is learning the basics, the second and third chapters are a little bit harder, and the last chapter is medium and then gets extremely easy once you get Orlandu. There are many differents monster and/or human enemies you must deal with in battles. If you lose a major battle, this means that you must train your men a bit before re-entering. I have beaten this several times and guarantee that you, the viewer/customer, will enjoy it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic--Still Addictive after Seven Years
Strengths: Involved and complex story, addictive gameplay, beautiful graphics

Weakenesses: Poor camera control, dead-end savepoints

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of those rare console games that you can return to again and again and yet always find it to be enjoyable, immersive, and incredibly addictive. For a seven-year-old game that will take most gamers over fifty (that's right, five-zero) hours to complete, this is quite an accomplishment.

FF Tactics' two most brilliant virtues are its intricate plot and a unique gameplay experience which is the result of a nearly perfect integration of three-dimensional, turn-based combat and the familiar RPG strategy of guiding the advancement of the characters in your party through various jobs and skills. The elegant and involved gameplay element of FF Tactics is ultimately it's love-it-or-hate-it attribute. In addition to developing characters in between battle sequences (by upgrading abilities, purchasing new weapons and armor, sending characters on adventures, etc.), you also command parties of up to five characters in 3-D battles by maneuvering to gain tactical advantage (attacking from the sides and behind is always more effective) and executing attacks or other actions.

Gameplay is quite complicated and, as a result, the learning curve for FF Tactics is relatively high. Square (the game's publisher) graciously includes a tutorial mode (accessible via the game's main menu) that provides newcomers to the game a firm foundation upon which to begin experiencing the game. Be warned, however: it will take you one to two hours to progress through all of the included tutorials. Despite this significant time requirement, I would highly recommend that gamers who are not familiar with similar games (such as Vandal Hearts for the PSX) take the time to look at some of the tutorials.

The story is even more enveloping than the gameplay. The carefully-written plot will always leave you in suspense, anxiously looking forward to the next twist or turn in the storyline. The events of the story are subtly (sometimes ambiguously) unveiled with an elegance that is rarely found in literature and film, let alone in video games. As with gameplay, however, the complexity of the plot can sometimes work against itself. I will frequently find myself having to go back several cutscenes to try to piece together what's going on. Fortunately, Square planned for this as well: you have access from within the game itself to every cutscene that you have viewed as well as summaries of all the characters (even minor ones) and their involvement with the plot thus far (yes, these summaries are updated as the game progresses).

The graphics are another of the game's many virtues; they are beautiful and have worn quite well considering the age of the game. You won't find any flashy 3-D effects (the landscapes are colorful and attractive--although low-resolution--3-D models while the characters are 2-D animated sprites), but the artwork present throughout the game--from battles, to cutscenes, to menus--is just that: artwork.

Despite its excellent gameplay, plot, and graphics, however, FF Tactics does have its share of weaknesses. Most frequently annoying are the camera angles that are available in the battle sequences. More often than not, the 3-D landscapes obstruct your view of the characters and action, and the limited camera control makes it difficult to find a good angle from which to view most of the action. The result is a lot of switching from view to view throughout the course of a battle (or even throughout a single turn). Occasionally, this makes it virtually impossible to even see a particular character, but this is admittedly rare.

A less-frequently occurring but even more frustrating element of the game are the opportunities it provides to paint oneself into the proverbial corner. There are several points in the game (usually at the end of each chapter) where you will play through several battles back-to-back, with no time in between to develop your characters. Since battles can last as long as 30 minutes (sometimes more), the game provides you with the opportunity to save your game in between these battles. Good, right? Not necessarily. The problem with this setup is that if your characters aren't adequately prepared for the subsequent battle(s), then you may get stuck in a situation in which victory is impossible to achieve. Unfortunately, the only way out of this situation is to restart the game---a serious annoyance if you've already racked up, say, forty-four hours of gameplay time. The moral of the story: reserve more than one memory card slot for your saves so that you can create a savegame file both before and during such a series of battles. On the upshot, however, this was one of the few games that I found just as entertaining and addictive when re-playing the first 44 hours (yes, this happened to me).

The verdict: Final Fantasy Tactics is a great and timeless game that I'll be returning to again and again over the years, and I hope you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect...
WARNING * If you are buying this game because you are obsessed with Final Fantasy and the original FF style, listen to this. The game is turn based on a gridlike arena, and the entire game is based on the complex battle system, if you don't like long battles or actually having to think, don't buy this and complain. * WARNING

Ok, now that that is over, this game is a must have for anyone with a playstation or a playstation 2. The graphics are not all 3D but not at all dissapointing, with detailed sprites that are always in motion the game has a nice feel to it. The sound effects are also a plus, as well as different battle music for almost every battle. The storyline is great but no where near as in-depth as something like FF7 or FF9. I had beaten the game a while ago and decided i would revisit it recently (great replay value). This time i had a Gameshark that i got for $4, and wondered how much i could do with it. With the option of changing all of my characters to any monster, enemy, boss, ally in the game with any set of moves, the game has just doubled its replay value. If you read some more of the reviews for FFT and decide you want to get this game(which you will) don't forget a Gameshark. However, on an end note, the game is still excellent without cheating, buy it!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disgrace to the FF Family!
What a letdown this was after FFVII!The graphics looked like they came straight from a Sega Genesis or NES system circa 1993. This bears no relation to the decent FF games and is one of the suckiest games I've ever wasted money on.I tried to give it to the Salvation Army but they didn't want it either.

5-0 out of 5 stars A not so avid gamer
This game is truly one of the best of the Final fantasy line.I was very disappointed with FFX, I mean really, compare the story to Legend of Dragoon or any of thousands of Video games! This game had a unique and captivating storyline, charming characters, and vast character development. As a matter of fact, the game is organized based on the development of Ramza. The battle system was one of the best I've ever played, a refreshing change from the entirly turn based system that didn't require a brain to use.Furthermore the graphics and music was charming, not steller in truth, but it worked better for the story than 3-D graphics like FFX had.The game was like experiancing a Fantasy novel, and a good one at that, which I think was the origional intention of RPG games. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best rpg of all time
This game has so many items (over 11000)! the graphics are really good for the time period it was made. the story is easy to understand. there are many characters to unlock while you travell around two vast worlds! you can always choose your battle type which makes this game more fun. there are three battle types full control no control and semi-control. these make the battles suit the person playing the game. once you start playing you wont want to stop thats a guarantee!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
I love Final Fantasy, it has everything other games have, story and gameplay, but something on it wan't right, battles. Star Ocean, surpasses in every way, the conection of the story with Earth and not only imaginary world. Thect that humans have such an impact in the universe, the detail of the UP3. I'm not that far yet, still going to Aquios, but DAMN. its awesome, easier to control your health, of course if u use certain special moves u lose HP, but only makes an impact in the beginning while ur still weak. His character in the beginning seems kind a retarded but i'm starting to see a change, into a more competitive, no-rule-stuck up guy. I approve it, manufacturing, real battles, MAZES, HUGE... not like Final Fantasy that all u have to do is follow the trail... BUY, u wont regret it,
sorry this is for the new one...

4-0 out of 5 stars An RPG with something that many lack...
All gamers have had the experence of playing a game (be it an RPG or anything else) they felt had its fair share of flaws, but has that one, very bright redeeming quality that makes all those flaws take a backseat to that one positive.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is one of those games. Star Ocean's appeal (at least in my case) can be summed up in a single word: combat. Star Ocean's combat system is probably the game's most notable feature. The real-time battle system, which has a very arcade-like feel to it, is a very enjoyable change than your standard-fair RPG battles. It's just so much fun to destory enemies with a volley a special attacks from you and your allies. The skill system is also a plus as well, increasing characters stats and developing other usefull, non combat skills.

Unfortunately, the rest of Star Ocean's elements aren't quite up to par when compared to the hustle and bustle of battle. Graphically, Star Ocean is behind the times no matter where you turn (excluding the FMV's). Actually, the game's graphic engine is very simular to a 1998 Square-Enix title, the often overlooked and bashed-to-no-end SaGa Frontier (one of my favorites - yes, I'm serious). The fact the game uses most of the same graphical tricks empolyed by a game two years earlier underlines this fact.

Storywise, Star Ocean 2 suffers another, slightly smaller blow. While the story is generally good, it seems to drag on until you reach the second disc, where you do more exploring and fighting and the story begins to unfold more. Characters aren't as developed as well in Star Ocean compared to other RPG's such as Final Fantasy or Wild Arms, though the game tries to make a very obvious effort to do this though the use of the private actions system (where you enter a location and your characters split up and you can talk to them on a one-on-one basis to discover more about them - this affects the outcome of the game in various ways). I will give the developers credit for trying though.

Musically, Star Ocean 2 has it's ups and downs. Some of the tunes can be quite annoying, but no game score is without it's duds. However, when you hear the battle themes played near the end of the game for the final bosses, which mainly are of heavy rock/metal variety, all is foregiven. Soundwise, the characters various soundbites during battle are cute at first, but become annoying really quickly (how many times can you remember Claude saying "that's around 50 points" after a battle - too many to admit when I'm sober).

Even with it's flaws, Star Ocean: The Second Story is an above average RPG. While I'm not sure if I would call it a "classic",I would recommend it to anyone who had the time or showed interest in the genre.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Game
I love this game because of its great battle system and the characters you lern to love! I beat this game twice once with Claud and Once with Rena. Rena is a far better choose since u get Diaz. But the best charocter is Ashton. The story is sort of slow at first but once you get into things you should love it to.I am waiting for number 3 to come out and i just hope it's just as good as this one and i don't want to be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!
This game is one of my most favorites. I haven't made it all the way through yet, but I simply love it.

The game has a few flaws. The voice acting is kind of lame, the story is WAY too boring at the beginning, and it seems pretty difficult at times.

The item creation part is the coolest. You can get tons of great items, foods, and weapons through this. In fact, the skills are so great that it's surprising the whole thing could fit on one disk long with the rest. Truly a great game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game ever
This is hands down my favorite game ever made... Sure it's kinda old by now and therefore not as fancy technology-wise, but the story is enough to keep me involved, and the fact that there are 108 distinct characters to recruit, PLUS all the NPCs that you don't recruit.Lots of personality.I can't even tell you how many times I've played through this... the second one is pretty good, too, but the first is definitely the best.A must-have for any true RPG fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome game for any RPG fan.
I rented this game along time ago with a few friends, but usually when I look at the title image I can tell what kind of game it would be, but after starting it, it was awsome and started me into being a hugh Suikoden fan. The 2-D graphics may be a turn down for most players out there, but the story line is awsome and there are alot of interesting characters to recruit. I highly recommend this game if you've played 2 or 3, or just need a good game to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic
The Konami we all know is back. Remember all the good quality games we used to get from this company? Well, Konami is trying to get back into shape, and Suikoden, the year's best RPG, is a step in the right direction. The story is simple. You are the son of the General Teo, one of the emperor's most powerful generals. Immediately, your father leaves to fight a battle up north leaving a few of his trusted friends to watch over of you. Soon after, you come to realize that you and your father been serving on the wrong side. The Emperor and his generals' minds have been brainwashed. The result is unhappy subjects and an enslaved country. Knowing this you join the Liberation Army and when their heroic leader is assassinated by the baddies, you are chosen as leader. Your job now is to recruit thousands of men to join the Liberation Army and restore peace to the country.
Suikoden is full of beautiful backgrounds (especially your castle which you can name), not to mention outstanding effects for magic spells. The music is incredible, rivaling the soundtrack of Square's Final Fantasy 3! Some of the sound effects used in spells are reminiscent of those taken off old He-Man episodes, which oddly enough sounds terrific. All this plus intricate plot twists and an inspiring storyline constantly push this game forward. Suikoden is undeniably one of the best RPGs ever made. Not only that, but Suikoden isn't a game that can be finished in a few days either. Suikoden is long (about 25+ hours) and it doesn't get boring... ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD RPG
This was a very good game the graphics are okey but the story line is great. You can get 108 people.the game is moastly about runes(magic).over all this games is great.SO IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED THIS GAME YOU MUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Still my favorite of all time...
I remember getting this game when it came out. I didn't hear anything about it but my mom was willing to buy me anything. I'm glad she bought it for me.

This game is truly epic. The music is awesome. It's no par with FF7's music. It truly is some of the best. The battles are great. There are normal ones which are fun. You get to use 6 characters. Your party is up to you. Over the game you get 108 different characters, of which 2/3rds are playable in battle. There are also duels. Duels are fun. Wars are awesome in this game. There is alot going on. The graphics are well done. For a 2d game. There are tons of different good looking sprites. The story is also magnificent. My favorite story ever. You come to love the characters. The game also ends perfectly. It is a tear-jerker. Right after the final battle I may have teared a little. The game is fun though. If you see it buy it. The game is well worth it because it is my favorite game of all time. It beat out MGS on my list, so it's good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a sweet game
this game is absoultly phoneomeal(or however u spell it) this is a must have it's a good game and doesn't take extreme experience to beat. but just cuz it's not hard doesn't mean it's not good.I strongly recomend this game, if u dont like it there's not gonna be many games u will like

4-0 out of 5 stars Young Girl Defeats Evil Empire
Once upon a time in a land so far away that character names are nothing like they are today, the Seru came to the world of Legaia.Man discovered that he could use these benevolent creatures to wield tremendous powers. All was well.Or as well as it could be in a world where war was a commonplace and, sooner or later, someone figured out how to pervert the power of the Seru and turn them to evil. Those who wore the Seru became degenerate, and the world cowered before the onslaught of the mist.

Of course, the powers that write games couldn't leave an opportunity like this alone, and our heroes, Vahn the young hunter, Gala the monk, and Noa, an eleven year old girl with the power of 10 were packed off to end the mist, wearing special symbionts, the Ra-Seru.Their first task, to restore the great trees of the world.

This is a classic PS-One RPG.Not one of the greatest, but with enough play in it to keep your interest for the 40 to 60 hours it takes to play. The story line is straightforward - the long story arc is broken into a set of subquests, either the restoration of a tree or the destruction of a mist generator. The world is large, and you will spend a lot of time walking about in perpetual battle until faster modes of tranportation become available.

The battle system is based on combination attacks which can be layered together in increasing power.Magic is available via the Ra-Seru, who can absorb powers when certain foes are beaten.Like many systems, fighting can be as complex as you might like, but the truth is that you will find certain patterns that work consistently and those are what you will use. This is a flaw in most RPG's - power always trumps subtlety.

The game's only glaring flaw is that it is entirely too much a money game. You start out poor and stay that way, since no matter how many you kill, your funds always lag the prices until late in the game, when a variety of sub-games become available to generate cash and prizes. There is something vaguely unsatisfying about putting saving the world on hold in order to go 30 round in a boxing ring to get the cash for that nifty magic grail. Now every RPG has this problem, but in Legaia it is worse than usual.

My other gripe is the characters.Vahn and Gala are extremely two dimensional (Gala has a slight sense of humor).Noa, who gets most of the story development time, is a hyperactive, bloodthirsty eleven-year-old girl who is perpetually waving her arms and giving orders. She is also a stone killer. She may get my prize as the silliest hero to grace the Playstation.

Graphics are decent for the game's era, but music is a washout. This is a decent game, with fairly enjoyable play, but don't expect Final Fantasy level quality. If you like RPG's as a genre, then you will find the game entertaining for many hours.

If you can put up with the cutesy graphics, Grandia isone of the longest, most compelling, and most character-driven role-playinggames you'll ever spin in your PlayStation. By the time wefinished this massive quest, we really cared about the game'scharacters. (By comparison, our interest in Final Fantasy VIIwas focusing more on getting from one transition movie scene to thenext).

The main story line is standard role-playing fare. The powerful GeneralBaal has plans to unleash something of a Pandora's box on the world, and you can guess whose job it is to stop him. Grandia providesa world packed with colorful characters who are fun to talk to, and theunconventional combat system lets players pick and choose their fights. The characters in your party grow, as do their magical skills andweapons, meaning there's always some new accomplishment just around thecorner that keeps players adventuring long into the night. Role-playingfans should be overjoyed that this conversion from the Sega Saturnclassic was made, as it provides weeks of solid adventuring that neverbecomes a chore. --T. Byrl Baker

5-0 out of 5 stars Reminiscent of a lost childhood
I am an RPG player to the core. I only play RPG's and I tend to randomly pick them off the shelf at game stores and buy them. I have played and seen my fair share of depressingly bad RPG's.
This is how I happened to come across Grandia in my younger years. I instantly fell in love with the game. I do not look for graphics in a game (although good graphics are a plus), so this game was perfect for me. The story was decidely lack of some really new ideas, and the battles could be teadious. I enjoyed the humour of the game. Even when faced with grave danger Justin is calm and cool, at least he tries to be, just like any younger teenage boy would be.
The battle system was easy to use, and understand. Plus, the leveling up of your weapons and magic added a little twist to getting stronger.
I would definitly advice younger teenage boys to play this game if they wish to play a fun and interesting RPG. The story is easy to understand, the fighting is smooth yet challanging, and the love is to a minimum (which any teenage boy would love, no pun intended).
So, take a chance and play the game. Have fun, and if you don't like it then you don't, but if you do. Well if you like it then you have a game to play when you get really bored.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Theme of Adventure
I heard some many things about the original Grandia that I had to get a copy. Since it was the beginning of the series, I just had to see what started it all. I was impressed with this one despite it being really old. All three of the Grandias emphasize something grand in there stories:

Grandia 2: Story
Grandia Ex: Battle
Grandia 1: Adventure

This game has one of the most original themes I've ever known. This game is all about adventure and the places you visit come from a long list of destinations. The game itself started the unique IP gauge battle system which had the most unique way of learning moves and spells: you have to a certain numerical level to get a new technique. Some moves and magic have two or three required values, making this one interactive RPG that will mostly emphasize training. Once you get a new move, using it or its related statistic increases its power level and activation speed. Also, when a weapon or spell type levels up, you get a boost in the related parameter (for example: if Justin levels up his staff, he gets a bonus of 2 HP added on to his max total as well as 1 point more onto his Vitality). Not a bad system at all, a bit reminiscent of Saga Frontier 2's numerical value Arts system. Game Arts should have kept this on for the other two games. Maybe they might bring it back for the third one.

The music is a definite highlight of this game, considering the great Noriyuki Iwadare composed it. His town and battle themes are amazing, especially Disc 2's main battle theme (my favorite battle theme of all time). There are entertaining and sad themes too and a romantic one for all of us who want something a little heartfelt. The voice acting isn't really as bad as everyone says. Justin and Sue are pretty much right on the dot with their ages (14 and 8) while Guido's semi-Italian speech is really cute. Milda's southern girl accent is nice and burly and Rapp definitely sounds like a kid who has no manners at all.

The story seems a little closely related to Grandia Ex in terms of the Grandia world having elemental spirits residing in it as well as the story of an ancient civilization where man tasted the paradise of supreme knowledge. Not bad at all.

The game spans two discs and has three sidequests of great difficulty on the second disc. Unfortunately, they are very easy to miss and have some sweet rewards inside. Plus, after a certain point, you won't be able to go back and do them, so pay attention on the second disc.

The flaw with this game is that is clearly not meant for the PS2 (because of the constant data flow during battles and dungeons). If you still own a PS1, it will save you all the frustration of infrequent and unwelcome freezes (especially if you haven't saved in a while). Also, the music tracks on this Grandia are cut somewhat in comparison to the Saturn version, which has them all, so you might want to hunt down the OST (which is even rarer than the game these days). All and all, a great beginning game for a hopefully long running series in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great game
it is a great game it's a fun and a long gameand if u think it's easy you think wrong i av completed the game three time and am not even bored and am doing it all over agen i wud by this games

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Clean Fun With a Price
Grandia is simply a gem.The cast of characters are a little predictable, but definitely distinct and unique from one another. It is a decent port from the Dreamcast, but I have seen better.
+ Level Up System:
You level up just like any other RPG with experience points after each battle. However, your weapon level up upon their usage. Each character can use up to three different weapons.Upon leveling up a weapon, something is leveled up such as HP, Vitality, Strength ect. This is the same for magic.Magic is first aquired by finding Mana Eggs and using them to buy magic.Afterwards, the more you use a certain magic, (Fire, Water, Earth, Wind) you level it up, giving you more skills. This makes leveling up a lot more fun, and even adds to the battles as you need to use certain magics to aquire new skill.

+Battle System
This is one of the best types of Battle System.First of all, it is a mixture of active time and turn base battle.Every enemy shares the same Active Time Bar.Once a character reaches a certain point, you have all the time you need to select your attack. Not only that, but certain attacks can affect the active time greatly, sending the enemy, (or your characters) backwards in the active time bar. OH!And did I mention there are NO random battles. The enemies run around in the screen with you, and you see them before you come in contact.Once defeated they disappear.Come close enough to them, and they will chase you though.

+Characters
There are a few characters that join and leave the party. However, there are two that stay throughout the entire game, (Justin and Feena). Each character has their own history, personality, and special movies. This still does not make for good character development though. They are highly predictable. The voice acting and even dialog script is laughable.Such phrases such as; "100,000,000 DEGREES!TAKE THAT!" and "OH WIND, TWIST LIKE A TORNADO!" seems a little cheesy for me during battle.

+Graphics:
The graphics are decent, but there's nothing special about them. The world is in 3D and the camera can be rotated.

+Story:
The story seems very cliche to me.A young adventurer named Justin wants to find new quests for himself. He's a troublemaker and later finds himself on the journey of a lifetime. He meets up with many new people and eventually realizes only he (with the help of his friends) can save the world. It is not very unique or at all intriguing enough, but many of the small side stories is what makes it interesting.

+Overall:
This is a great game! It's fun and well worth your money. It claims to give over a hundred hours of gameplay, but I beat it in 47 hours.Though the character and stories are weak, the gameplay is not.Grandia II is just as good, and with the hopes of another Grandia to follow, things should only improve.

Pros:
Great system for leveling up magic/skills
Fun battle system!
Good length for a game

Cons:
Laughable dialog and voice acting
Weaker story / cliche / cheesy at times
Very linear

Okay for starters.I am offical a member of the 1 member ABBA (anti Brain Bat Association). If you have played this game, found the optional dungeon, fought those little buggers at a lower level, you know why.(BABOOM)

Sorry.

The game is cool.Graphics are nice (not the best but better than some). The music is excellent. The voice acting is skippy but it works. The magic system can be difficult to figure out in the beggining and hard to level, but hey ^-^ there are places to level them without cheat codes.[For water, try standing in the green water at the tower and heal yourself. It does work, though it does take a few hours for each character--recommending Feena to level 99 water/wind.]

I love the game overall despite the bad voice acting.Nothing tops the original, I suppose.Oh, and who can ever pass up having their final boss fight inside of a coach-roach? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Samurai Greatness!!!
Okay, long ago I played this game, for a very short time at that. Once for five minutes when a neighbor brought it over (and sadly I never saw him again) and another time on a demo for about the same amount of time. Then I bought this and it was AWESOMELY AWESOME! Then also when the sequal/remake of the game Samurai Legend: Musashi, it was JUST AS AWESOME IF NOT EVEN MORE!!!!!!!!! YOU MUST BUY THE GAME NOW! ALSO THE SECOND ONE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is TOO AWESOME to describe!!!
This game is AWESOME!!! I played the demo of it, and as soon as I finished the demo, I knew I had to play the full version. So one day I rented it. It was a BLAST!!! I fell COMPLETELY in love with game!!! Oh! And I expect the same thing in the sequel. That's right, the sequel!!! It's due March 2005, and is called Musashi Samurai Legend!!! So if you liked the first game, expect HIGH hopes from the sequel!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun somewhat challenging games
What may have turned many fans away (even me at first) about this game is that it is on the outside targeted towards children. While Final Fantasy always had a deep plot with strong characters, this one does not.Instead we get a game that is more in tune with that of a Saturday Morning Cartoon.

The story here is that an evil force is attacking the kingdom in order to take it over. The Princess and her council cast a spell to retrieve the Legendary Brave Fencer Musashi. They expect this tall muscular Adult Warrior and instead they get a child.Distraut at first they send him on a quest to retrieve his sword and release the five scrolls so that the evil can be stopped.

The gameplay is that of an Action RPG.You gain experience points in fighting but also on how you do things to a certain degree. You use your swords to fight but also your short sword can be charged and then thrown at your opponents to absorb their abilities. You may find that the weakest of creatures could have the most usuful of abilities, and vice versa.

This game is deceptivly deep and challenging. The Bosses are for the most part Hard, yet incredible to fight. Also just to tease RPG fanatics there is a Toy Collecting Mini game of sorts. You can remove the toys from the packaging but then their value goes down if you choose to resell the toys (take that Fanatics).Overall this is a great game to play and I am looking forward to the PS2 followup for sometime next year.If your not into Final Fantasy than give this one a shot, you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real review
I can't belive the reviews I am reading on this game, because I owned it, and I am writing this review to make sure that other people don't make the same mistake that I did.

We all love Square, but come on, sometimes they don't make the best games. The only problem is that their fans are so loyal that they won't let anything bad be said about even the few square game that are not good.Final Fantasy 5: bad storyline, I mean bad, fun gameplay, but none of the diehard fans will admit that it is a bad game.Musashi, same problem: horrible storyline, and I swear to god some of the most annoying side characters in gaming history.I wanted to kill the princess myself. She talks, *giggles* totally like this, and the worst, like thing, like, is that she like has audio of all her speeches *giggle*.And once you beat the game you probably won't come back 4 more.If you are under the age of 13 or 12, though, you might enjoy this game, so this review is dependent on age.

But really, before you dismiss this review, it is not the worst game, it is bad, but come on other reviewers don't recommend this game as a must have, u know it's not that good.Buy Vagrant Story instead, loads of replay value, probably the best story-line on the PS, and graphics and look are original, I've never seen a game like it, the development team broke up after it, so it will remain an anomaly.Or Parasite Eve 1, that's the closest I've seen a game come to a movie and still have gameplay and an actuall game included with it.Anyway, this is an honest review, I warned you don't buy the game, you most likely won't enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUY BEUNO!!
Considering that this is a PS1 title, this game is awsome!!! It has solid gameplay, beutiful sound, quirky sound effects, and cool charecter designs.Best feature, the Machine Gun Fusion... bratatatatatatatatatat!!! WHEEEEE!!! ... Read more

This was the first attempt at a 3d rpg id had ever scene I spent hours just battling away. Discovering new persona and items. The interaction system was among its greatest inovations for a console allowing to try and talk you way out of fighting and gain somethign by it. The plot was a pain to understand but then again I was like twelve at the time. the maps were a bit of a pain until you got your barings i mean everythign looked the same event he freaking switchs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all RPG's!
I loved this game the first moment I hade tried it. The characters in it were fantastic and the story line was great. I think the best part of the game was the persona's themselvs, powers that live and form inside each character and dealing devistating and chilling powers such as Hell Eyes and Sad Rain. I think that anyone who likes games that are long and that has an egnima within an egnima, then they sould buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try something different
Great gameplay, neat design, compelling story. What more could you want in an RPG? How about guns? There are also some serious incentives for fighting those inevitable random battles; your characters get experience, and so do their personal demons ("Personas"), which allow them to use magic and can be moved from character to character. You can also get out of a random battle by bargaining with a monster for money, items, or a card that will allow you to create more personas. This is not an easy game, which makes it all the more rewarding. If you're an RPG fan who's looking for something different, you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This game is the bomb!!
This game has good music,a great storyline,a simple combatsystem, good and simple dialogue. The only bad thing about this game is that most of the time it's in 16bit graphics. This game is for hardcore RPG players because you will spend days just to get your levels up or tring to get items, spell cards, and new personas. So my opinion is that this game is not for people who mostly play action games because this game can get some what repeatable and you can't move around in combat.Thats what I think of this great game. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS GAME!
This game is great! You start as a young monster tamer in the city of Monsibya. One of the down sides is that every time you enter the tower you start at level 1. Also, you can only bring 5 items into the tower. You start with kewne, a fire type. You find items in the tower that can change the type to water or wind. Water beats fire, wind beats water, and fire beats wind. Basically, you find demon eggs and other treasures that you can ONLY keep if you survive, and you can sell them to make a few renovations to the town and your house. The renovations will provide extra activities (You'll find out what later). The priest will suggest what to build. In conclusion, that it is a game that you will enjoy.

this game has no plot and its gameplay [is bad] you dont do anything else but ride things to the top of some tower and once you get to the top its the end of the game so dont get this game.

5-0 out of 5 stars An underrated classic, from the makers of Metal Gear Solid
9 out of 10 people will probably see this, and pass it up as another cheap RPG, for one thing you only have 1 dungeon (gasp) when you leve you level back down to 1 (GAsp), and you capture monster just like in Pokemon (GASP).No it's not a compelation of rip off's, this is a classic that is highly addicting, and incredibly fun, if given a chance.
The story revolves around a young lad (you name) who on his fifteenth birthday is given the opportunity to become a hunter and explore the depths of the Monster Tower to retrieve riches, however to do so he must not only survive, but grow as a trainer and as a man.In comes the Kewe, the monster you will likely use for a majority of the game.He is a fire type (there are only three types) and he is your brief tutorial, and key to success early on.
... YOu also must build up your respect to the townsfolk, to do this you must enlarge certain places (Temple, Hospital) and build new things (Library, Gym, Casino, Race Track, Bowling Alley ect..) and the town will grow to respect you.
Now as for the tower it'self, there are 40 floors, everytime you leave you go back down to level 1.No it's not immpossible for two reasons.
A) Your monsters level stays the same when you leave, this is due to the fact that they are more like equipment.
B) Weapons and armors stay the same, when a red or blue sand is used your weapons and armor grow more powerful, so technically you can easily dominate the first few levels without you monsters assistance.
Overall this game is tricky, you will die the first few times (lose all your items except monsters)but once they are strong enough you can succeed. There are 40 randomly changeing floors and they get more and more difficult as you go along.YOu must adjust your mosnters accordingly by class.
A)Fire
B)Wind
C)Water
Fire beats Wind, Water beats Fire, Wind Beats Water.
I would buy this for the challenge it possess, guarennteed addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
To start, i rented this game cause their was nothin else to get and i was hooked right away!I got a huge fine for not returning it.I finally own it now and all i can say is it is a great game. You start with nothing and enter the tower. you should find a weapon soon but it wont be to good. you continue going through the tower getting money and rare items. it is full of subquests. you get to go out with 7 different girls; at the same time! and take them to the pool. hehehe. and you can build your town into a big city with monster races and a casino. it has great replayability. i have been playing for 127 hours and still counting. dont play this game if you dont plan on buying it because you WILL get hooked! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great game...
Back in 1997, almost all gamers were talking about the debut of Squaresoft's Final Fantasy VII for the PSX. I, never having played an RPG before that point, played a demo of the FFVII at my cousins house (that was packaged with Square's Tobal No.1 - little known fighting game). That christmas I asked Santa for a Playstation and a copy of FFVII. Sanata delievered and I enjoyed and occupied myself for many hours that christmas...

But this review is about Wild Arms. After I had completed FFVII after the holidays, my classmate lent me his copy of Wild Arms. While Wild ARMS didn't contain all the hype and flash that FFVII had going for it (far from it in some aspects), I felt the game overall was a real winner.

Even five years after it's release I still can't praise this game enough. Graphically the game is very out-of-date by today's standards, but one must realize the game's graphics were out-of-date the minute FFVII flexed it's polygonal mucsles only a few months later. If your rating how good an RPG is by it's graphics, then you are not a true RPG fan in any way, shape, or form.

Graphics was never the series' strong point, even though the graphics for Wild ARMS 2 were very well done (outside of the battle system mind you!), and Wild ARMS 3 cell-shading was nice (but kinda dull overall).

What really made Wild ARMS such a strong game is the excellent character development that easily rivals ANY square-enix title (I'm not afraid to make such a bold statement!). When you really start to feel for the game's characters, espeically when tradegy strikes them, you know you have a winner. Even the game's villians are very well developed and very, very memorable (I still refer to them in gaming conversations after all this time). Some may say the story is your typical save-the-world fare, but I still think it beats the heck out of some of the plotlines in games today (where original ideas seem to be lacking overall).

Wild ARMS, simply put, is a classic. Personally, I would put this above FFVII in terms of my overall favorites, even though I played FFVII first (FFVII still being another one of my top favorites). Even if your a new to Wild ARMS, or a fan, this is one RPG not to overlook.

Hmmm... I wonder what the PSX2 remake, Wild ARMS: Alter Code F is going to be like?

4-0 out of 5 stars don't overlook this one!
A couple of years ago I picked up a copy of Wild Arms 2 and I really enjoyed the game (despite hearing that it is the black sheep of the 3 Wild Arms games).I enjoyed the game so much that I was willing to track down a copy of the first Wild Arms game and give this one a shot, too.Once again, I wasn't disappointed. This was one of the first RPGs on the Playstation (one) and predates Final Fantasy VII.Right then, you should understand that the quality of graphics is naturally going to be much weaker, but this is an RPG and graphics really should not matter. What matters is that the game is fun to play, even years later. In many ways, this game is more similar to the SNES RPGs that preceeded the Playstation rather than the games that followed, but once again, this game was a lot of fun to play.

The story is the basic "Save the World" plot, but it has to grow into that story. We take three characters who have no connection to each other: Jack, Rudy, Cecilia. These three characters come together and get involved in a quest that with each step grows larger in scale and scope until it eventually builds into the "save the world" quest that we have come to know and love. For the most part, the game feels like it is mission based. You have to go someplace, fight, and return and find out where the next place you have to go and fight is.I know, this is essentially any RPG (or video game, for that matter), but it just feels more like a mission based story than unraveling the story as you progress through the game.

There is a strong puzzle solving element to this game (though not as bad as the block puzzles from WA2), but it was used effectively in Wild Arms. The story was fairly interesting and the minor characters were fun to see pop up from time to time.By the end of the game things started to get a little absurd, but this is a fun little game and it should not be overlooked due to age or graphical deficiencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this classic. Literally. Okay?
I rented this game awhile back and kept renewing it until I beat it, and regardless of that, I still want to play it again. It's a classic PlayStation RPG that was overlooked by many in the wake of Final Fantasy VII.The story line's pretty cliche and the graphics always resemble that of a Super Nintendo RPG, but that's what I love about it.I'm a sucker for the old school graphics, though the battle graphics for Rudy, Jack and Cecilia (the main characters) kinda suck, but it doesn't bring the game down any.Even though the plot's cliche, it's told VERY well and will keep you playing just to see what'll happen next. Then you'll want to see what'll happen then. And so on and so forth. The soundtrack's so good, I never skipped the intro.I really miss this game. And you will, too, if you love classic RPGs and somehow pass this one up.

5-0 out of 5 stars And So the RPG Fanaticism began. . .
It was a long time ago that Wild Arms entered the gaming world as the second RPG on the PS (the first being Beyond the Beyond in '95), but a long time doesn't really change anything, for I have yet to see an RPG that has surpassed the quality that was shown here.Sure the graphics are good ol' 2-D, but if you're one of those shallow people who can't get by the look of the game, then stop reading . . . NOW!I don't want you reading this.Cause this game is for the people who love the characters they play as; people who feel for them and care for them as they pass through the different stages of the game.I have always said that playing an RPG is like reading a fantasy/sci-fi novel, so anyone who differs in opinion can laugh or mock all they want, but this is for the TRUE gamer.
This game offers so much that I can barely describe it.The music is absolutely amazing, the characters are even better, and the plot, well, that is the best!So what if it's the typical save the world type plot!If you consider yourself a RPGer, or a gamer, get this immediately, you will not regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My start with rpg's
This rpg started me on the rpg love. The graphics are not that good, but hummor and pure fun is wild arms. And this game is HUGE all on one cd. My buds love it and I think many will. This one is much better than #2 a must buy for rpg fans. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper
I'm really into the Saiyuki anime that is running in Japan. In looking for Saiyuki on amazon I found this game. I'm happy to have obtain it since there isn't any talk at all about it. I love the game, it gives me about 40 hours of game play and a good store line. Granted, you need patience to play the game due to the turn based system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good story...
Another solid tactical rpg, based on a great story and well designed. Its too bad this was one of the last playstation titles released and has been overlooked for the most part. The only complaint i have was there was little in terms of side quests, and the game was fairly easy. I did not lose a single character in battle, the dojo's for practicing and leveling up was interesting but I found that a little tedious. The missions where better to do anyways cause you could earn gold and why fight for free? Anyways its not final fantasy tactics, tactics ogre, or vandal hearts 1/2 but if you've beat all those too, then this is solid game to enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tactical RPG with giant monsters!
Saiyuki was what I'd expected it to be: it was good, but not great. Saiyuki is a tactical turn-based RPG, basically a dumbed down version of Final Fantasy Tactics. I bought it based on that, as well as some decent reviews.

The combat is fun, which is good, because tactical RPG's are all about the combat. It is also a little innovative, mainly in the fact that members of your party can transform into Weres, giant monsters with more hit points and a variety of special attacks. They turned out to be less useful and important than I'd imagined, because only one person at a time can be one, and you have a very restrictive number of Were points to work with, especially early on.

The battles are also smaller than is most preferable. The maps aren't very big, first of all, and you can only control 6 people at a time (most things don't match Shining Force's 12 people). One annoying combat point is that Saiyuki is king of palette swapping; in general, rather than introducing new monsters, it just changes the color and level of the old ones, which isn't very cool. Also, the attack animations for spells are repetitive, and way too long, and are poor quality anyway, but they can be turned off. The entire game, actually, is graphically plain, though that isn't too important in any sort of RPG, and there are some nice touches, like the character portraits.

The plot is actually very good, especially for a tactical RPG. It is linear, but very interesting. It is based on a Chinese myth, the same one which spawned Dragon Ball Z (although it is similar in Goku's name only). It is cool, without having a fancy presentation. Saiyuki also has a very good cast of characters, including the main enemies.

Saiyuki took about 30 hours to finish, but it is easy to play in small amounts, like one or two battles, so length shouldn't be a deterrent. I recommend Saiyuki, but not particularly highly. You should play it if you like tactical RPG's, but there are some better ones to play, like the Shining Force series, Front Mission, or Final Fantasy Tactics, especially as an introduction to the genre. Still, it is fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good game..!
I thought this game was pretty good. It's your basic tactics style game. Your path is pretty much dictated to you (you can't go roaming around on a world map) and battles invole a little more strategy than just selecting "attack" or "use spell".

The game has nice characters, the story line is cool, and the BGM is nice.

Like a previous reviewer said great if you like tactics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun!
This game hasn't sold very well. That's a great shame, because it's loads of fun.

Mechanically, it's quite similar to Final Fantasy Tactics; you travel from point to point, learning parts of the story as you go, and then engaging in tactical battles that become more complex and more dangerous as time goes on. Since FFTactics was a good tactics game, this means that Saiyuki, too, is a quite enjoyable tactical game.

Where Saiyuki shines, though, is in the story and characters. There have been many different adaptations of the Monkey King and Journey West -- a game called "Wu Kung" for the PC, the anime Dragonball, and so on -- but this one has its own charm. The wandering monk, Sanzo, gathers together a group of guardians to oppose certain dark forces and to retrieve a collection of ancient wisdom from distant India. Each character is given several expressions to accompany and emphasize their dialogue, and their designs are well-executed to reflect their character; the self-serving, mischievious Monkey King Son Goku, the innocent and earnest monk Sanzo, the haughty Daughter of the Dragon, and so on. The characters do not just focus exclusively on the plotline, but often banter amongst each other, giving us insights into what they are like and how they get along during their travels. There's nothing tremendously deep or literary about these characters, but for a video game they're amazingly well executed. When I'm playing, I'm looking forward to each interaction and wondering what I'm going to learn about the characters. The battles are good, but the story's better.

A little-appreciated gem. If you like tactical RPGs, grab this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have had it since I was 9 and still think it's game kool
im 14 and still playing this game it starts with a chioce between rue and mint. Mints gets to use magic and her story line is funnier because she is a spoided, lazy, brat, and a princesses and got kick out of her kingdom so now she is trying to achive world domination by finding Aeons relic. but Rue is my favorite person because he can transeform into his enemys, he has a stronger story line and he gets to go to the the mountin (which is wicked fun). its not all that expensive ether.

3-0 out of 5 stars Welcome back from 2003 Year of the Replay
Well, it's been two years since I bought this game and I finally got around to playing it.Threads of Fate was one of Squaresofts 'trial games' from the Summer of Square in 2000.I say it's a trial game because Square rarely brings their RPG talents into the real-time action adventure arena. For fans of Brave Fencer Musashi this game is a must buy.It showcases a similar fighting system and one of the playable characters (Rue)is able to take on the traits of his recently defeated enemies.Whereas the other character (Mint) uses her skill in magic to fight the bad guys.

Unfortunately, there isn't much to this game. The challenge is very low and the only parts that can be considered hard fall into the "Time your jumps or else" annoyance category. My first playthrough only took me 7 hours and in that time I was able to find all the hidden items. However, the games saving grace is its humor and that you are able to play through the game using the 2 different characters.

While not one of Square's best games, I recommend this to someone looking for a quick little diversion, or even to the more amateur gamers out there.

While not one of Square's best games, I recommend this to someone looking for a quick little diversion, or even to the more amateur gamers out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Game I'v Ever Played
The Graphics Are Wunderful and so is the music!!!It's gotta be the best Action/RPG game for the PSX,besides the Final Fantasy Games!!Rue can Shape-Shift into most of the monsters you Defeat!Mint can use tons of awsome magic!Trust me if you like RPG's BUY THIS GAME!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but short
Threads of Fate is one of the best action-RPG's I've ever played. In this RPG catagory, it ranks fourth below only to Chrono Trigger(Final Fantasy Chronicles)(1), Chrono Cross(2), and Xenogears(3). I would reccomend Threads of Fate to anyone who wants 20 (6 is my record) hours of fun.
Threads of Fate is packed with humor, adventure, heroism, relativly good graphics and a great story line. The worst part of the game is its conclusion, which you have to beat both characters story lines to get.The ending sets you up for a sequel that has yet, and may never, hit stores.
If you are as tired as I am at squaresofts up comming hits like Final Fantasy X2 and XI, buy this game and my other top games listed. They will challenge you but after defeating them, I can almost garentee you will head out, get bored, come back home and give the old ps1 another try at the game. ... Ever want to try your hand at making games? Now Agetec has delivered atimeless masterpiece that will help many gamers fulfill their dream ofconstructing a video game--albeit a role-playing game--from scratch.

With RPG Maker for the PlayStation, would-be game designers can finallycreate their own digital world. All you need is a PlayStation, a littleimagination, a lot of time, and you can create your own Final Fantasy,Ogre Battle, or Dragon Warrior adventure--sort of. It takes teamsof 50 to 100 people two to three years to design and create the RPGs that weplay today. If you think you've got the patience to do it on your own, then thisgame (or should we say set of tools) has a lot to offer.

Write, design, and control everything from the story line to dungeon designs, toorganizing and constructing the towns in your game. You can even choose itemlocations, weapons, and enemy hit-point totals. Such standard, modern-day RPGelements are all at your disposal here. For those who really want to go for allthe gusto, you can design and animate your own characters from scratch! Theanimation quality doesn't approach a Disney level, but at least the option isthere.

This isn't a plug-and-play type of title; it will take you quite some time justto figure out where you want to start. If you don't have the patience to play atraditional RPG to the finish, then you might want to pass on RPG Maker. For everyone else, there's no better place to start! --Todd Mowatt

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I picked this game up from my local hobby shop because I was bored.

Its pretty much what the title says, you can make your own RPGs.It easy to use once you get used to it and you can make some nice looking RPGs once you get used to the way it works. It comes witha sample game to show you how a game should work(or will).

Overall though it can become a little frustrating creating some maps.Theres a large selection of tiles that dont seem to be arranged in any particular order, you'll save yourself alot of time if you can find one of them PS1 mouses. I also recomend picking a keyboard, unless of course you like typing everything out by on screen keyboard.

The game dosnt have a whole lot of premade stuff, enough to make a short RPG, but if you going for a 10+ hour one then no.So luckly they gave you an ANIME creator, which let you create you own charcters and monsets(also tedious without a mouse). OF course if your like me you'll be a poor drawer and make some odd looking things.

Overall it not to bad, but if you have a PS2, and $20 I recomend to buy RPG Maker 2, it has 3D graphics and more in-depth editing. But w/e, it your choice.

I was a little concrened when I first bought this game.I had heard that it is very hard to understand, but I found it very easy!Reading the manuals and finding a good walkthrough site, such as www.gamefaqs.com, can make this game a cinch!Just be prepared to dedicate over 100 hours to your game to make it good. Also, it eats memory like it was nothing, so clean out a memory card before you buy it.

this game is reallly coo' just think, make ur own final fantasy game

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Still
For those of you who are thinking about investing time into RPG MAKER 2, this game is just like that. There is one difference... RPG MAKER 1 is for 2d games. If you like 2d games, you can make a bunch. You can customize characters, monsters, backgrounds, titles, scripts, events(triggers), effects, dungeons, towns, spells, attacks, items, and more. You could create a pretty cool 2d adventure. There are a few drawbacks.

Yes it is time consuming. If you learn how to use the editor properly, you should be able to do things fast. You don't need to be an artist to make characters, but that takes time. Use the implemented ones. As for typing. I tried on the controller, but it removes all joy from the game. GET A KEYBOARD FOR YOUR PS2! It costs 20 bucks. Go to search and type "logitech keyboard". Find the one for ps2 and get that first. Memory. That is another fault. Buy like a 5 dollar memory card with space. One custom character takes one block. Game data can go from 2-3 blocks. The sample game which is kinda boring takes 2 blocks i believe. You will probably stop playing it after a while. It gets hard.

This game is good. There are a few drawbacks, but it is great for people who want to create their own rpg. If you have a friend you could swap memory cards, and play each other's rpgs.

If you want 3d, get RPG MAKER 2. If you want 2d, get RPG MAKER 1. If you take the time to learn the editor and have a keyboard you will be fine on time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best yugioh games ever made!
This game is so cool that I wish my friend had it. In it I entered cheat codes and I got some of the strongest cards in the game! I got the 5 pieces of Exodia (I entered codes on the game shark so I could have infinete star chips), Blue Eyes, Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, Dark Magician, and many other good cards. I tried to get Gate Gaurdian (Because I have the pieces in my deck but what sucks is that it won't fuse to form him!), Toon World, and all that good stuff but somehow it won't let me get em!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Ok
This game is Ok, but when you have to challenge this guy that is all blue and says that he wants your millenium puzzle, there is basically nothing you can do except dualing him. It is like impossible to attack his life points because sometimes on the first turn he summons a monster with 4000 atk. and 4000 def.In the beginning, it's easy geting cards from other dualists. Oh and in order to get stronger monsters, you have to get all sorts of cards in your hand and put them all together. Who knows what cards you need.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than any other yu gi oh game.
This is theyu gi oh game to buy. The storline is kinda hard to follow at first, but you catch on quickly. The way you get more cards in your chest is pretty cool, you have to defeat other opponents. If you have a yu gi oh card, you can put in the number, and if you have enough star chips, you can put in into your deck. I recommend getting this yu gi oh game rather than any other one.

1-0 out of 5 stars this game sucks
hi. i got this game frome bestbuy and it was a waist of my time and money. sometimes it freezes. you only get crapy cards. the cards cost 999,999 chips (on the game). this game is a piece of $@!&. dont buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Playing MonsterSeed
I'm reviewing RPG, Adventure and Strategy games, this game is a mixture between Jade Cocoon and Final Fantasy 7.

In this game you play the role of a character named Daniel, you're somebody called a Ruler, you can collect "seeds" and hatch and mix in "solutions" to make stronger monsters.

This game was good because you can make your own monsters and carry as many as you want.It was also good because the game always has something good or bad happening.

If they made it to where you cant get "deformed" monsters there would be a better variety of monsters. What would also make it better would be to make more "seeds".

People who like Adveture,Drama, and making your own Monsters will like this game.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow, this game is hella cool
hmmm... good game. If you liked Dragon Warrior Monsters, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Dragon Seed (no relation), you'll love it. This game incorperates a monster hatching system like DWM and one of the best battle systems ever, the FFT/Tactics Ogre system. The translation is terrible, but it doesnt affect the game too much, and adds a few laughs to generally grim gameplay. The fights are very grim, as anyone who falls and is not raised immediatly says a few final word and then dies, even though the fighting is presented as a sport in the arena. Plenty of cool looking beasties to look as as well as some cutsie ones to stomp on. Buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars short but loads of fun
I was able to beat monster seed in two weeks(along time for me).
No I am not saying that this game is hard or any thhing but it was fun to get new seed and hach them.
This game should have been a little longer (around three disks).

Still I would sugest this game to any RPG fan.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hated this game!
This game was horrible. If you want somthing like final fantasy or dragon warrior monsters this is not the game for you. How the main character kept saying"Ora Ora Ora" got very annoying. The graphics stunk and so did the storyline. It is not worth your money. I would not reccomend this game to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gamer in MN
I think Monster Seed is a VERY cool game. .... If you're a graphics nut, than you won't want to go for this game.It has very poor graphics, i.e. the people have no noses, but the cinematics scene in the beginning is VERY impressive. The battle system is easy to get used to, but the "ENCOUNTER: Your Start" gets old pretty quick. All in all, a good game. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Side quests and more side quests...
Hoshigami is a good looking rpg tactical game. I enjoyed the MANY side quests and all the towers. It took well over 100 hours to complete them all. However I can honestly say that after all that I cant remember anything about the storyline what so ever. Its only been two weeks since i finished this game and i remember very little of the plot. I enjoyed defeating the dungeons, finding weapons, and using the well designed coin system, which was fun. If you can play strictly to enjoy the battle maps and side goodies i highly advise this title, however the story is lacking and forgettable.

5-0 out of 5 stars People just dont understand
One of the best games ever made for the Playstation console. Why do I say this, Hoshigami isnt some push over games us Americans are used to. Where we just level up and beat are enemy to a pulp. Its not for the weak at hearted either. This is one hardcore RPG. One your enemy will always be somewhere around your power level no matter what. Its hard to, not some easy cheesy game. Youd better get some bawlz or red bull because your in for it with this game. The thing I like about this game is the deities. You get to be some sort of different color, and can change and teach you cool and different skills. The game has been given some silly and aweful reviews, by people here, and on the top game reviews out of fustration because it was difficult. I guess all games to them are suppoed to be for simpltons like them. Its sad :( Hoshigami is a great game and everyone should play it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Disappointment
Even with extensive experience involving various incarnations of the strategy genre, I have never discovered a game quite as frustrating as Hoshigami.Difficult challenges can be entertaining or provide an innovative approach to dealing with situations within a video game; however, the pure difficulty of this game is absurd. Many of the challenges presented are completely unwarranted and unnecessary.Inevitable defeat is manifested in the very battle of your own mediocre characters versus god-like opponents.

Imagine this scenario:For a solid 5 hours, you have been consistently leveling up and strengthening your troops in the same bland battle environments. When you suspect that you have gained the necessary statistics to confront your enemy, you enter one of the major "missions" of the game. However, one of the characters which you have dedicated 5 hours to building up falls in battle. What can you do?Nothing.I recall several occasions in which I almost broke into tears when one of my fighters was slaughtered, as if one of my own dear friends had passed away.

Another utterly frustrating situation involves saving a particular non-playable character during a battle.Under these circumstances, the character which you must save is often surrounded by enemy troops while your own band of soldiers is several turns away from arriving to the place where they must conduct the fight.Additionally, the enemy fighters will have obtained a high level equal to the strength of your own army. The special character will usually be a decent 5 levels lower than every other combatant on the battlefield. You will watch hopelessly as the special character will be massacred in a matter of minutes, thus resulting in failure of the mission.

Even standard battles requiring the defeat of all enemies on the map are unfairly challenging.Your group of seven fighters will often be outnumbered in a 2- or 3-to-1 ratio. While it would be fun to simply run head-on into the battle and fight off the opposing forces with brute force, such strategies will not prove to be successful. The placement of troops during a battle is absolutely critical and requires investment of time to scope out the statistics of all enemies in the area. Each character's elemental deity plays an incredibly significant role on their survival.Certain characters could be murdered in a matter of three hits from the enemy unit (note:refer to second paragraph to see what to do if a character dies).

Despite the frustration involved in actual gameplay, the other aspects of the game are rather lovely.Character designs and conceptual artwork for the game are of noteworthy quality.Although the background music becomes monotonous after a while (the battle music has a tendency of remaining the same), certain melodies are rather charming (such as the mystical introduction tune or the pipe music that plays in the Save and Load screen).

The storyline isn't particularly outstanding, but many of the characters possess a certain charisma that draws you to their separate personalities.A certain mystery surrounds some of the characters which may prompt personal ponderings and investigation. In this way, it seems that the game is driven more by the characters at times than the storyline.

In spite of its few redeeming qualities, Hoshigami is simply the work of sadists.Although at times amusing (primarily during character conversations), the core of the game--the actual gameplay itself--is severly lacking--or, perhaps better stated, severely frustrating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even consider it as a coaster
My rating = -1/0 (negative infinity) stars.... this is a veterate FFT clone: It has the turn based battle system where actions and moves consume your turn gauge (not even an analog.....afacsimile of FFT). Even the target for your spells and attacks is a set of red squares. Don't get me wrong... I played FFT for over 300 hours and I still enjoy playing it (although I conquered deep dungeon etc.), but this game became intolerable after two hours. Why ? This is not exactly a FFT clone... because it is lacking a job system entirely... meaning that you can only choose between certain deities (sort of like zodiacs in FFT) that modify your stats.... that's it and there are only 6.... so there are really only two classes: Melee/Range and Mage. So you could look at it as a FFT restricted to jobs/classes (meaning there are none), but with horrible music, and aridiculous difficulty. Having the identical battle system induces it's inheritance of the one/two character lvl up, because otherwise you will die of the monotonous battles before you can lvl your entire party (that consists of 7). Unlike FFT, however, there is really no place to lvl up besides ONE STRUCTURE (THE SAME MAP OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN THE PLACE YOU SPEND YOUR MOST TIME GENIUS ATLUS!) And most of the time you may spend yout time cursing when you need to rescue a character and it dies instantly from three hits from three different enemies that have a 10% chance of hitting (probability is .001). This game is so horribly monotonous and frustrating that I gave up offering it to my friends (since they knew better the bastards) and simply smashed the CD and threw it away. I don't think atlus could have done a worse job with this game considering that it was FFTs successor: Dont buy it, dont even play it unless you want to piss yourself off, and make sure you throw it in a dumpster that you don't like because I wouldn't even defile my garbage can with it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't say it was wonderful
Yucki poo.
That's the simplest way i can write this. Hoshigami is just not a game i like. The fighting sequences are very predictable, confusing, and L--O--N--G. Also, when equpping, and even hiring characters/mercenaries it can get very confusing and muddled. The only thin i liked(and the part that stopped me from giving this game a zero) were it's very nicely drawn characters. ... Read more

Chocobo, that cute birdlike creature of Final Fantasyfame, returns in its very own role-playing adventure. The cutesy appealof Chocobo's Dungeon 2 may look as if it is aimed at youngerplayers, but there is enough depth here to satisfy older gamers.

For starters, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 lets two players partner ingameplay as they search several randomly generated dungeons that arefull of traps, strange devices, and monsters, making the difficultyincrease as the game progresses.

Players can combine armor or weapons to form stronger resources in theirquest. There are also magic feathers that can aid in your efforts, sincethey allow gamers to perform magic spells that have an impact on combat.Between your dungeon travels, players are able to explore villages toobtain valuable clues for the journey. In addition, players can use thistime to update Chocobo's inventory.

Overall, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a great game for players lookingto get a start in role-playing games. This title is a safe entry pointto this often-complex game genre. --Robb Guido

5-0 out of 5 stars A cute game with good re-play value
Although the cute animation and PG rating suggests that Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a kid's game, it has enough challenges to keep an adult player interested. As the title says, this is primarily a dungeon game, where you have to solve mazes, fight monsters, win items, etc. in order to advance the story. What makes it better than most dungeon games are the randomly-generated floor plans. When you exit a dungeon and re-enter, the maze will be entirely different. You still encounter the same monsters and events, but the path to get there is a whole new challenge. This greatly enhances the re-play value of the game, and also keeps you interested if you have to repeat a dungeon -- and you will, because parts of this game are really HARD.(The Sea Floor Dungeon has 27 levels!)

Many of the monsters and characters will be familiar to fans of the Final Fantasy series, with some in-jokes built in.For example, the Tonberry, who fights with a Chef's Knife in FF-VIII, is running a restaurant in this game, and has a drunken Malboro (FF monster) for a customer! You will also find Cid the eccentric inventor, the Black Mages, and Mog the Moogle, among others.

Chocobo himself, of course, is one of those chicken-like birds that the FF characters ride. That's why, in this game, his defensive armor is a saddle.Chocobo can also be equipped with various collars and claws. Different types of saddles and claws are put into special ovens to create customized weapons, similar to the way that armor and weapons are "tempered" in "Legend of Mana" (another Squaresoft game I recommend.)You can also combine other items at the "recycle boxes" to create new items.

When one of your customized saddles or claws breaks in battle, you may get a feather, which has various effects on your abilities.Different weapon combinations and levels produce different feathers. It pays to track down a copy of the Strategy Guide, so you can plan for which abilities you want to develop first.

My biggest complaint about this game is that, if you get KO'd in a dungeon, you lose all the items and equipment you had with you. This can be very frustrating, especially in the beginning, when you can't carry much in the way of healing items. As the game progresses, however, you can rent storage space in town, where youstash extra items that won't be lost in a KO.You will also get "teleport tags" that enable you to beam out of the dungeon at any time WITHOUT losing your items.

The battle system itself is different from the regular FF games, and takes some getting used to.Each time you make a move, the enemy makes a counter-move.If you don't move, both of you just stand there.Think of this as an online version of the old D&D games, where players took turns rolling dice in the battles, and it will make sense. The big advantage is that you can stop right in the middle of a battle if you need to think about what spell or item to use next. You can even teleport out of a battle if you are about to get KO'd.When you do this, you have to start the dungeon over, but you keep your items and experience points.

After you have beat the game once, let the credits roll, and you can play another version of the game -- with new dungeons and the ability to fight as other characters besides Chocobo.Plus, there are some new abilities to earn and a Secret Dungeon with 30 levels!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Game
This game is based on a Chocobo that travels an adventure through dungens with a mog and meets new friends. This Chocobo, A bird type animal, learns magic and finds new wepons, which are claws. There are pots that one can mix two wepons to make a better one. When a high level claw is broken a feather is gained which can be use to summon a summon. There are also potions that heal when the Chocobo is low on healthThis is a very good game for Chocobo Final Fantasys Fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great game to get
This is one of the best chocobo games.the CGI on the game is just great and the storyline is one of the best I've seen so far, like all the other chocobo games it's short but very fun. And when you beat the game and let the credits go you get to play a different game. This game is a must get for all Chocobo fans

4-0 out of 5 stars Relief from and refreshment of Final Fantasy.
Since Thousand Arms took up about 3 weeks of my Playstation time, I didn't get around to playing Chocobo's Dungeon for a long while after I bought it. Totally unexpecting, I decided to try it out because I needed a break fromThousand Arms.

Chocobo's Dungeon is a very fun game with very cutegraphics. The movies are very 3D and the music is very appealing. Thesystem of battle is a big relief from people who dislike constant flow ofbattle, and Final Fantasy lovers will classify this game immediately as aFinal Fantasy game for the younger audiences. This game is addicting andfun. Once you figure out a healthy system for attacking the dungeons, you'll be able to play through the game without getting confused. Overall avery fun game!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight RPG offers lightweight fun.
If you're looking for an epic role-playing game that will consume months of your life with a grandiose storyline, this is not going to fill that need. But if you're looking for an RPG that's good in short bursts andwon't last you too long, "Chocobo's Dungeon 2" wouldn't be a badchoice.

No, don't go scouring your stores - we in US never got the first"Chocobo's Dungeon." Besides, it's not like the plot is reallythat complex anyway.

The chocobo (which, if you've never played a"Final Fantasy" game before, is like a giant chicken that'scommonly used as a mount) goes into a dungeon with his friends to try andsave the world. Simple, but then again, it's supposed to be.

See, thisseries from Squaresoft is aimed at the younger audiences to help them breakinto the complex world of RPGs without having to do it the really hard way.The combat system's rudimentary, but functional, as is the magicsystem.

The graphics are also rounded and, well, cute. Everything has asuperdeformed look to it (big heads, little bodies) and even the soundeffects are reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons.

While the Dungeongames may be aimed at younger folk, it doesn't mean that they're no fun forbig kids, because Squaresoft makes sure their games are challenging foreveryone, and even the most hardened veteran of RPGs will have troublefinishing "Chocobo's Dungeon 2" in under 20 hours.

Beyond that, the game offers a second set of quests after you finish the first one, togive the game that much more longevity.

And, in some ways, it's anostalgia trip for old Squaresoft fans, for them to see some of thecharacters of old Squaresoft games who have been MIA for a while.

Sowhether or not you want to get into "Chocobo's Dungeon 2" reallydepends on the experience you're looking for.

If you've finished"Final Fantasy VIII" and looking to cut your teeth on anotherhardcore RPG, either go get "Saga Frontier 2" or the epic andintense "Front Mission 3."

If you're looking for cuteadventuring fun in short bursts, this will do just fine.

ooooooooookay. This Video game is not only the worst RPG but the worst video game ever me and Jimmy Stillson agree and we dont agree on much. Okay I want you to buy this video game so u will apreciate good video games like Xenogears and Saga Frontier. God even Tonka Space staions better than this. I bought it at a store ya see I kinda wondered why it was so cheap. You get in a battle so often you never leave one spot. But do buy it you could never Imgane how bad it is untill you played it. If u like Woodywood Pecker racing you just might like this and you just might be a bad video game lover too. Peace

5-0 out of 5 stars Playstation's 1st RPG
Not too complicated, yet entertaining, this first foray into fantasy RPG's by Playstation was great fun without being particularly unforgiving like some other games. The main downside was the constant combats; you couldn't walk three feet without an encounter. Also, judging which of the three late stage additions to the party should be allowed to judge to 5 person roster was cumbersome. Nveer mind waiting forever to get Samson's curse lifted! Still, a pleasure all the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classicle
A really hard game. but it IS a classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly awful
Lots and LOTS of random battles, dumb characters, dumb gameplay, graphics that would look bad on the SNES (except for the constant battles). I played this when there were no other RPGs on the Playstation and I had the flu. With so many great RPGs out now, there is no reason for this game. Actually, there was no reason for it in the first place. I'm an RPG nut, but this one is just plain bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Killed by a fatal flaw
I bought the game. I started playing into it. When i go on a journey to this tower monster battles happen more and more often.

In the tower they happen so often by the time you have figured out what direction your facing after a battle your already in another battle. A battle about every 2 squares(easy battles too. but time consuming) is enough to drive anyone batty. Because of of the frequency of battles in some spots(way more then any other rpg game ive played.) this game become worthless. The only rpg game that i have that i haven't finished and do not intend to finish.

Im sure the programmers intended to pad the hours playing with frequent battles but they just manage to turn the game into a worthless "paper weight" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best games ever made
Monkey Magic is one of the best games I have ever played. At first, you have no power. Then you gain all sorts of powers including, power rod, flying cloud, fire, ice, shrinking, invincibility, infinate lives and infinate magic. overall I'd give it ten if I could.

4-0 out of 5 stars In response to copyright
This is not really a review. The game is fun, but short. Other reviews or descriptions tell what this game is about.

I hate ignorant people. This is not a Dragonball ripoff. Dragonball is loosely based on the Chinese legend "Journey to the West." And when I mean loosely, I mean creator Toriyama made most of the Dragonball mythology up to his liking. I'm not saying that Dragonball is not entertaining, but it is not a story of the Monkey king. Monkey Magic is a more accurate interpretation of the legend of the Monkey King. As for the show itself, it was a bit bland as a retelling, but still entertaining in its own right. Technically it was not canceled, but ratings were not stellar and before you make some uneducated A=B theory. Nielsen ratings for cartoons are never high, let alone for "anime" are ever high especially when it is placed in impossible time slots. This one aired on Sunday 6:30 AM where I am. Season 1 only has 13 episodes. If you want to read more blatant ignorance, see the variety of reviews on the live-action Dragonball movie here on Amazon (search for it) where some people really think Dragonball is a re-telling of "Journeys to the West" and Dragonballs are really dragon's balls.

This game was & is a complete ripoff off Dragonball. The show got canceled & and creators got sued. Why own a game like this anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Great Game!!
This game is one of the best games I ever played. I bought it one month after it came out. At first, I thought the game was boring at first, but then it got funner and funner. You can also gain new attacks and spells! You also have to pass more than 25levels which are FULL of action, gain 4 types of spells-Fire, Shrinking, Invincibility, and Ice, and beat more than 55 enemies. I hope you get this game or rent it first because this game is "INCREDIBLY" exciting!

Editorial Review

Guardian's Crusade is a role-playing game (RPG) that is clearly geared for youngerplayers, based on the simple, cartoonish graphics and kid-friendly storyline. And though diehard RPG fanswill probably be unimpressed with the simple dialogue and light plot, this game may appeal to the targetedplayer.

Gamers assume the role of an adventurous knight who accidentally stumbles upon a baby monster. Theknight (with the help of a shimmering fairy) then sets off to return the baby to its home. As in many RPGtitles, the quest is filled with enemies. Guardian's Crusade contains the usual random battlesequences, but these encounters are played a bit differently than most other RPGs. For example, themonsters in the maps of Guardian's Crusade are shown as pink tadpoles, which attack the characteras soon as they see him.

U.S. game companies have been slow to import many established Japanese RPGs, despite the domesticsuccess of innovative titles such as Final Fantasy VIII. However, games of that caliber are few andfar between. The U.S. release of the substandard Guardian's Crusade is surprising, since it appearsto be aimed at younger children or those not familiar with video games. For beginning RPG players,Guardian's Crusade may be worth a look, but more experienced gamers would probably want tostay away from this one. --Ben Jensen-Roseman

Pros:

  • Simple graphics and kid-friendly story draw in younger children
Cons:
  • Minimal storyline
  • No character development whatsoever
  • No replay value at all

5-0 out of 5 stars This E really is for Everyone.
I've had a hard time finding any truly clean role playing games at all for my son on psx. Even some of the cute cartoony looking ones rated E for Everyone(6&up)like Threads of Fate have adult language at least. I mean I live in the real world, but let's allow kids to play some kid's games sometimes. Guardian's Crusade is huge fun, it is easy enough for the little guy, and it's got to be the cleanest rpg for psx or ps one in terms of content. I got one as fast as I could, since Amazon was the only place I could find it. Meanwhile maybe it's time for a gamecube...

4-0 out of 5 stars One for the kids perhaps?
With a pink pig as one of the main characters, and only being able to summon "toys" rather than dragons or GF's, you may be under the impression this is not a game for the genuine RPG fan. However, do not let these facts protract from what is an enjoyable, entertaining, light-hearted RPG, which can become strangely addictive. The plot is kept simple and straightforward, the battle action is the usual turn based affair and the world is quite large and easily accessable. The toys are picked up throughout the game, and can be used to attack, defend, heal and generally cause havoc to all, much like magic. One of the innovative ideas in this game is that you can actually see how powerful a random enemy is before you go into battle: If you want the cowards way out, you can run away without entering into the battle scene, likewise if you are foolhardy, you can travel around only pitting your skills against the nastier opponents. With all this said, this game is no FF or Xenogears which have great storylines and character interraction, but dont let this put you off, this game is definitely worth a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best game in the world
this is the best game i have ever played in my whole life, and this is saying somthing coming from someone who has compleated(and i mean every single item including excalabur2 on ff9) all of the final fantasy games including anthology, tactics, chocbo racing, origins, and 7,8,9. The whole game is light hearted and non-complex giving you a break from the imposibly complex games such as FF and LOD. it draws you in and forces its way into your heart, with its touching story line. so i recomend this game to those of you who have finished ff and lod and want a relief from the conventional games TRY THIS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good RPG for beginners and little kids
This is a good game for people who are unfamiliar with RPG's but I still play it a lot.I may have beaten all of my other RPG's including FF7 andFF8.I'm a RPG freak but i still like this game.

4-0 out of 5 stars RPG for the younger ones.
A great solid RPG with only one problem. It is for a young audience.I wouldn't give this game a try unless you are 10 or under. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't even tell you if it's bad or not
Simply put, the game doesn't even work on the Playstation 2.I have never ran into problems running Playstation 1 games on the Playstation 2.This is the first.I couldn't get past the "start game".I would get those jumbled graphics that you used to see at the start up of the old video games like Galaga and then I'd get nothing.I tried resetting the game 3 times to no avail.
If you have a Playstation 2, don't bother wasting a penny on this game.I'm sorry I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not A Purchase You would Want For A 6 yr Old.
I purchased this playstation game for my 6 year old son and he and I thought it was one of the worst games out there. Couldnt even hold his interest for 5 minutes. That is a record for my son who could spend hours playing games. Goofy, Tom & Jerry House Trap Tarzan and Mega Man are much more suitable for this age level. This game is along the same lines as Rascal but even worse. I would say save your money it would be a waste spending it on this game!!!1 ... Read more
