Einhander has one thing the others don't: bells and whistles. It's got multiple ship models, neon lighting effects, nominally interactive background elements, and obsessive attention to fine graphical detail.(Actually, this sounds like pretty much any recent Square game.)The visuals are startlingly slick, but conceptually really pretty boring.Ok, Einhander sports an ultra-cool "cyber-punk" vigilante nightlife theme, which really is borrowed straight from FFVII, which is in turn really just stolen from Blade Runner, isn't it? So, the graphics are extraordinarily polished.Very flashy. So what else? The sound is average. The opening level has a niceoperatic techno aria (very elegant), but after that the music just fades to the background. It's lame soft trance junk, but it really doesn't matter so much since it's drowned out by explosions most of the time. The explosions and other sound effects are acceptable, but really not very notable.Occasionally there's some command recited over the PA in German, and that's fairly unique. But nothing too exciting. The gameplay is strictly linear, and in this neo-classical shooter context that's fine. The emphasis is on reflex, not exploration.Again, the levels are very detailed and I suppose well designed, but the Philip K. Dick urban battlefield motif is a bit tiresome. There are lots of mechanized little pieces of robots and tanks and hangars and factories, and well THINGS that have little details to impress and wow the player. It's all very well done, but with little imagination.Enemies are mostly utility/military contraptions reminiscent of Aliens vehicles. They're all finely detailed, with no real surprises. The bosses are more of the same.Only bigger, madder, and with guns on top of guns on top of guns. Speaking of guns, the weapons system is pretty cool in theory, but not really very unique in practice. You blow up a ship, it leaves its gunpod behind. You pick up the gunpod and use it until it runs out or you get another gunpod.Ok, it sounds cool scavenging parts from demolished machines, but it's really no different from picking up a little shiny powerup bubble left behind an explosion. The guns themselves are varied and pretty cool, my favorite being a light saber fixed on your nose that's pretty much indestructable. But otherwise it's standard stuff:spreaders, seekers, bombs, etc...All of this also relates to which ship you choose at the game's beginning, since different ships have different gunpod mount/laser cannon combinations. So the game is not by any means bad. It's very good, actually, but it is without a doubt overhyped. It's beautiful to look at, but in the end not really all that fun. It's a 'retro' title thatplays by the rules of modern gaming: make it big, beautiful, and cinematic, and the uninspired gameplay will go unnoticed.Fans of the genre should definitely give Einhander a shot. But those ready for more, here are the alternatives:G. Darius for imagination and sheer fun factor, R-Type Delta for strategic challenge, Thunder Force V for a more retro feel, or either of the Ray series for top-down vertical blasting.
The Einhander ship is a blue, jet-propelled weapons-handler that looks similar to a butterfly. The reason it's called Einhander? It has gunpods."Einhander" in German means "one hand."In addition to its mounted machine gun, it has gunpods capable of taking on up to three special weapons.A few of these:Wasp, a compact and effective guided-missile launcher, Vulcan, a gatling gun capable of extreme rates of projectile discharge, and a devestating cannon. This is a game you have to see for yourself.Unfortunately, I haven't seen it at any local video stores, but you can trust my words:This game is worth it.Buy it, borrow it, whatever.Give this game a try. ... You play the role of Rookie 1,and you're sent to inspect the Dreighton Triangle, because many ships have dissapeared there. But then a swarm of Tie Fighters come in and shoot you down. You land on a planet, then you look for a YT-1300 Transport, while blasting StormTroopers all around(there are ground combat missions, too). Pros: Plenty of action. Three dificulty levels(easy, medium, and hard). Ground Combat Missions! Cons: Awful graphics on most of the levels. You can't truely control the ships. They mostly control themselves while you blast the heck out of everything. Having two disks is inconveinient. You have to put disk one in your PlayStation for the game to start, then put disk two in to acsess the later levels,if you've goten to them. Sometimes controling where the crosshairs go is hard using the little arrow buttons. Overall, this is a good game, but it could have been WAY better.

Editorial Review All of the racing characters possess special powers and unique tracks designed around their personas. ChocoboRacing contains five challenging racing modes, including grand prix (four-track tournament), time attack, versus(two-player racing), relay race, and story mode. We were particularly intrigued by the story mode, which placesChocobo in an old-fashioned pop-up storybook as he aims to collect several scattered blue crystals. We also liked the high replay value of this game. For example, a racing victory may reward players with the ability tocustomize a character. Chocobo Racing is far from a sophisticated racer--and, in fact, that is part of the appeal. This is an easy game to learn, so younger players can pick up a controller and play with little trouble. Still, plenty ofchallenges hide in the detailed tracks, which are filled with time-zapping traps and treacherous curves. --CarrieBell Pros: Reviews (17)
- The graphics are about average in the racing, to above average in the movies.

Editorial Review The opening sequence and cutscenes between each level are 3-D-rendered dead ringers for the televisionshow, making it worthy of consideration for collectors. Driving missions are simple and fun, with high-flying ravine jumps and dirt-road power-slides. Get behind the wheel of the General Lee (yes, it has thecustomized horn), Daisy's Jeep, Cooter's tow truck, and Uncle Jesse's infamous moonshine-runner, BlackTillie. Control is not as exacting as it should be, but the CB radio banter and the silliness of it all carry the gamefar beyond its gameplay. --Jeff Young Pros: Features Reviews (27)

Amazon.com Review Instead of using a skateboard to race against the clock and perform dangerousmidair stunts for points and prestige, this game is all about daredevil BMX bikeriding, so that players can aim to pull off a "Superman," "Icepick," "Tailwhip,"or "Toothpick." In total, there are over a dozen unique environments, such asCamp Woodward's backbreaking "Lot 8" or the San Jose Ramp Club, to name two. First, players must select their rider of choice, be it repeated World Championbiker Dave Mirra, 1999 Dirt Circuit Champion Ryan Nyquist, or eight other starsof the sport. Each of the riders enjoys his own signature moves, plus even moreriders can be unlocked over time. However, there is no create-a-player feature,as there is with a few other games of this kind. Fortunately, controlling the rider is a cinch to learn for younger or novicegamers, and there's enough substance here to keep players pedaling long afterthe goals are met. In fact, along with the "Free Ride" mode, the timed "Session"mode, and the challenging, career-based "Proquest" mode, there are 10 differenttwo-player games, including our favorite, dubbed "B-M-X", in which the secondplayer has to mimic the first rider's moves (remember basketball's H-O-R-S-Evariant?). Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX's visuals are only satisfactory, with nothingreally to kick heels about. The 3-D engine brings a few annoying screen"pop-ups" (objects and backgrounds awkwardly disappear on occasion, as ridersmove in relation to the "camera") and "clipping" problems (in which the ridergets stuck mysteriously) that probably could've been ironed out with a few moreweeks in development. And, while the midair stunts and crashes look painfullyreal, the game also seems to lack a convincing sensation of speed. But, even with its shortcomings, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX is a rad BMXarcade sim that proves that the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, whilestill the king, is not the only game in town. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Reviews (39)

Editorial Review Like most racing games, the idea is to finish first. However, to winyou must pull off some acrobatic maneuvers such as barrel rolls andsomersaults to gain turbo boost rewards and blast past your opponents.Keeping a third-person viewpoint and simplistic controls, Hot WheelsTurbo Racing provides just the right touch to re-create theexperience of zooming your own Hot Wheels cars around the living room. The addition of moody, thematic track backgrounds and scorching soundand visual effects transforms every toy-playing kid's fantasy worldinto a digital reality. --Jeff Young Pros: Cons: Features Reviews (8)

Editorial Review As you might expect from any licensed Barbie game, this title isdesigned to appeal to young girls. While there isplenty of pleasant eye candy for beginning gamers, this game clearlyencourages players to engage in low-stress fun that requires littlehand-eye coordination. Instead, Barbie Race & Ride is more aboutexploration and, in some cases, adventure. The game does rewardpersistent players with access to a much-fabled "secret ranch." Forgamers that want to take a break from the saddle, there is anopportunity to wash and groom your horse in the barn. Barbie Race & Ride succeeds in offering a friendly, nonviolentexploration environment for beginning gamers. Older brothers, beware! --Brett Atwood Pros: Cons: Features Reviews (10)
Mattel obviously has no idea what girls who have the ability of playing video games want in them. We are forced to ride chunky, ugly horses with unrealistic animations (horses stretch their necks outwards when jumping rather than flinging them upwards. This makes the obstacle course very hard) in environments that look painted-on and thrown together. Barbie is constantly stopping your ride to make you watch squirrels hop across branches, and there are only two gates to choose from (canter and gallop) I wouldn't have such a problem with this if canter wasn't so slow; it slows down the surrounding area so it's just like riding in slow-mo. The firefly game was very difficult for me when I was young and it took me near forever to figure out that you just open the lid near the firefly and it flies in. All in all, this game is one of the dusty ones in my collection. I would suggest Mary-Kate and Ashley's Winner's Circle for older girls, and Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue for younger ones.

So easy, a 3 year old could control this cart without trying. Overall:20/40: That is a 2.5! Round up and this game's got a 3! This game could get better!

Buy if you want a slap of crap.
Wipeout XL takes what everyone loved about the original and upped it a notch. The graphics are higher Resolution, the music is more upbeat, the weapons are more lethal. But perhaps the greatest reason to play it is that it's REALY FAST. There is simply no experience on earth like playing Wipeout XL on Phantom Class (the fastest class) with the hidden class of ship (unforetunately it loses weapons in exchange for maxed-out stats). When you play this game in this configuration, it truly is sublime. Weapons are fired at you, but you outrun them. You're bouncing off the wall like crazy, but going so fast it feels like you've got the speed burst weapon on continuous fire. It's easy to see what makes this game so great. It's a great concept executed flawlessly. You have great art direction, great controls, great gameplay, and great music. At a pace so fast it should carry a warning label. If you love racing games, and especially if you love Wipeout, you'll HAVE to buy this game.

Editorial Review Hot Pursuit gets its name from our favorite mode of gameplay, inwhich players try to exceed the reach of the long arm of the law bygreatly exceeding the speed limit. The ultimate goal is to beat youropponent to the finish line, but usually it's hard enough just dodgingoncoming traffic, swerving around police roadblocks (complete withspike strips), and trying to keep pursuit vehicles from slamming youoff the road. It's nearly as fun to watch replays as it is to race, andwe've only discussed one of the game's five types of play. Thisdiverse, fast-paced racer is definitely a keeper. --T. Editorial Review The standard mission design of previous games in the series remainsintact, giving players complete control over their aircraft as they ziparound in a fully 3-D environment. There are plenty of fun planes tofly this time around, from agile superfighters to lumbering bombers.Their maneuverability has been toned down from previous games in theseries, which makes lining up targets more of a challenge, but itbecomes second nature with a little practice. Don't be intimidated by some of the fancy moves available to thrill-seekingflyers here. After all, what's the worst that can happen whenyou decide to risk a daring loop and roll? The truth is that AceCombat 3 is ultimately more about pyrotechnics and fast action thanabout realistic flight physics. Ace Combat 3 isn't the leap intechnology over its predecessor that we expected, but it's still agreat way to satisfy your urges to fly the unfriendly skies. --T.Byrl Baker Pros: Features Reviews (14)

Editorial Review Players must pick from 11 world rally cars and play for the best timeson 48 courses in 8 countries, including New Zealand, Greece, and theUnited Kingdom. Racers encounter mud, snow, and gravel--all of whichcollects on cars as each race goes on. The elements can also inflictdamage on your vehicle, which adds to the challenge. A British codriver guides players through runs, while the rally schoolcan help beginners with their skills. There's even a two-player optionthat can be used with single rally, championship, and time-trialmodes. Control in this game is great, despite the varying track surfaces andweather conditions, and players even have to manage courses at night.Luckily, gear ratios, tires, brakes, and suspension can be modified tosuit any and all changes. While we won't go as far as to say this gamebeats the classic Gran Turismo, we do believe that McRaeultimately gives GT a run for the money. --Robb Guido Pros: Reviews (6)

Editorial Review Overall, this is a fun racing game for the hard-core racing fan, but those who really want to fly are better off with something that offers clearer graphics. Another problem stems from the fact that if you knock another racer off his or her cycle, but the cycle goes forward, then the recent victim of your assault starts where his or her cycle stops. This location is usually in front of you. So it's actually better not to hit them at all. The lack of replays in this version is helpful, and Jet Moto fans will appreciate the upgrade. Still, for a really stellar racing game, look elsewhere. --Allen Stewart Pros: Reviews (11)

Editorial Review Pulsating rhythms aside, Wipeout 3 offers players a wild ride through eight distinct tracks. It will take more than perpetual motion to make it to the end of each race. In order to complete each timed race, gamers are required to hit strategically placed power ups while navigating many near-impossible turns. The heart-racing action offers a tough challenge for dedicated games, but Wipeout 3 ultimately does not offer any significant improvement over earlier titles in the acclaimed series. --Brett Atwood Pros: Reviews (22)
I have had one copy or another of this game for almost five years. I've probably logged a thousand hours on it easy, as sad as it sounds, and I still can barely hold my own in the top "official" difficulty level, the Rapier class (especially on the harder tracks)... but for whatever reason, that doesn't hack me off like it would on any other game (I'm not a gamer and get frustrated very easily with needlessly difficult games, because I'd rather do other things with my time). I get this game out every six months or so and get hooked all over again, and actually want to find and thank the developers. I've played pretty much every other game in the series, and this one creams them all (it beats the earlier ones due to the graphics and especially analog support, which adds SO much to the game... and they all pretty much destroy Wipeout Fusion). This isn't the best racing game of all time-- it's the best game, period. No other game ever released has this combination of feel, substance, replay value, addictiveness, pure eye candy, and-- yes-- great music (and I hate techno, honestly). I don't understand how it's not a "classic" game, let alone how it's possible that it's so overlooked that you can get a copy for $4 used, let alone that you're not BUYING ONE OF THESE COPIES RIGHT NOW instead of reading this. If you've never played this game, and you're ready for a serious challenge that will endure for the entire life of your PS2 (or PS1!), buy it. Now. Don't even think twice.

Editorial Review Wisely, the game integrates a training mode as a must-play startercourse before advancing to the mission-based aerial challenges. However, don't expect to snooze your way through the missions: thedynamic vocal host spouts out plenty of snide and witty remarks to keepgamers on their toes. Also, excellent carnival-like music accompanieseach bit of the game, including menu screens, training levels, andvarious gaming segments. Extremely touchy controls emulate the realthing, while the game provides words of encouragement to help youmaster dangerous stunts such as loops, rolls, and even inverted flight. With rich gameplay and helpful flying tips, this game achieves the rarefeat of teaching while it entertains. A must-own! --JeffYoung Pros: Cons: Reviews (7)
The layout of this game sucks. Your restricted to a little peice of land for each stage, so if your looking for a game where you can fly around and explore, then this is not your game. I personally have never flown a remote controlled copter before, but if this game is accurate, then I'm not ever going to waste my money on something that will end up having an ultimate destiny of being smashed to pieces out of frustration. So is this game worth it? Maybe, if you get it really, really, really cheap, or if you have already mastered remote controlled copters in the real world. If they make another one of these games, then they need to add a whole lot more to it. Some may like it, but I don't. No stars!
I kept hearing it was really hard and frustrating, but I just went through the training first, and it helped me get my skills up high enough to manage just fine. Then Islowly made my way up to harder and harder copters.Great sense ofprogression! Something I didn't expect at all was the humor. There is avoice giving surprisingly intelligent feedback to just about everything youdo, and he's really funny. And there's a 'virtual' hand you can throw upto block the screen when you're playing against someone else in the2-player mode. And the whole time you're learning to fly a real r/chelicopter!I've never flown one myself, but now that I can manage the Acecopter in this game,I can't wait to give it a try with a real one, andmaybe even buy one myself if I can afford it. Very unique...a greatbreath of fresh air!
