Amazon.com Review

First-person combat has never been bloodier or faster paced than in Unreal Tournament, a game that pits you against computer-generated bots or online opponents in a kill-or-be-killed free-for-all. With weapons upgraded from its predecessor, this game offers scores of options for play. Games range from the simple Deathmatch to team options such as Capture the Flag. As the player, you can go it on your own against the toughest the galaxy has to offer or direct a group of hard cases against a similarly well armed foe. During play you can be fragged (killed) several times, respawning to take up the fight again--though without the rocket launcher or other guns you have carefully stockpiled.

Unreal Tournament has some amazing features, most particularly the tournament maps, which are complex, varied, and interesting. Initially a seemingly indecipherable maze loaded with weapons and health boosters, the geography of these spaces begins to make sense as you run from shootout to shootout. After getting fragged a couple of times, smart players will find themselves using these environments to their fullest advantage. Ducking down narrow chutes, for example, to leap out on unsuspecting enemies is very satisfying. The playing fields offer hazards of their own, of course--the danger of falling into toxic slime or hard vacuum is always present. Another nice aspect of the game is that online play runs with very little lag, allowing an intense multiplayer experience.

Don't be fooled by the word Tournament in the game title, though--Unreal Tournament has nothing to do with old-style chivalrous combat. Ambushing your enemies, ganging up on them, and blasting them to bits from behind is all part of the milieu, and if that's not enough, you can taunt your victims as you blow them away. The bots in the solo player mode have a wide range of nasty, misogynist taunts, even if your character happens to be female. These can be shut off in the options menu, but with the language and the gore this game really lives up to its Mature rating. It may appeal less to women or players looking for sportsmanlike diversion. --Alyx Dellamonica ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a new classic for me
I'm one of these guys that has a penchant for getting into old classic games way way after they have been released and longer after they have been considered current. I got Jedi Knight for the first time in 2000 and was addicted to that for months, and recently a friend of mine gave me a copy of Quake 2, which is one of the best shooters I have had the opportunity to play
It's definately following the classic DOOM formula, and no matter what "storyline" they attach to it or other DOOM clones the point is the same, you are a nameless soldier deserted in enemy territory with a single blaster, turning slowly into a one-man army and getting a huge arsenel in no time at all. The graphics, for a game made in 1998, are phenomenal, much better than Jedi Knight which came out around the same time. The weapons are all a blast to use, and the gameplay is very challenging but rewarding. Not to mention the enormous triumphant death kick of of those giant guys who swing hammer-arms at you is absolutely hilarious! Can't wait to play this online, but it's worth a buy or a burn. Great game!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great, but impossible to fix technical problem
The game is exellent! BUT After I upgraded to the worst operating system... Windows XP...
The game did not work very properly anymore. Activision's technical support is pure s-. I contacted the fourms at Planetquake and I still did not got a reply from them... If you have Windows XP... YOUR OUT OF LUCK. The error you will get if you have XP is... ERROR:GAMEERROR:Function pointers have moved.
That occurs when I try to load the game... So do yourself a favor and buy a old machine with Win 95, NT, or 2000 to run this game properly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shake or Quake
I am not to impressed with this game bacause 1 it gets boring after the 3rd time you've completed it. I have the PC version of Q2 and you get an extra 3 parts than the PS1. The first is a bones level where you get the super shotgun but it takes ages to get there. the 2nd is you end up in the an enemy warehouse. The 3rd is you go to an enemy mine. If you will have just started you have to use your blaster and find your shotgun a bit later on in the leavle. The secrets are a bit poor for you only get a health packs ammo power ups or a gun. I am not to keen on this game for it gets boring and you efortesly kill enimies with no heart in it at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thats what I call a good FPS
Quake 2 was one of my first PC games and I loved it, even after all these years I still play it...A little..

The games plot is alright in some specks...I really didn't care for the story to be honest with you but The graphics on this game were great for the year it came out.

The game play was just OFF THE HOOK.The game plays like doom but BETTER.The enemy A.I was good too....Not the best but good.
The Best part of the game is of course...THE GUNS!!!!!!The Guns just plain Kick a$$...

Also the game is fairl long...I enjoyed it..The game is pretty old..Probably 5 years old now.I doubt you can find this game but if you can GET IT!This game is not the best game ever made but it will be a solid fun filled game with top notch violence...yea the games pretty violent.

I haven't seen many FPS like Doom Or Quake 2...There great games

IF YOU CAN FIND IT GO OUT AND BUY THIS AWESOME GAME!!

Gameplay 5/5
Graphics 4/5..for its time
Length 4/5..

Over all.....4.5 out of 5

4-0 out of 5 stars QUAKE 2

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice interface, poor AI
I've owned this game for several years, and the previous installment from Hasbro. The interface in the game is intuitive and vivid. It's a blast watching territories change colors as you march across your enemy's nation.Whoever designed this part of the game deserves kudos, and I'm sure they've gone on to bigger and better things.

It's a shame, then, that this brilliant interface goes to waste on such a poorly designed game.If you have cats or small children, you'll find this game useful for when you have friends over to play and do not want to set up the pieces. This game will help you speed through the game. And, since you all know the rules, you won't have to worry about anyone placing or moving units in ways that violate the rules.

If only the same could be said of the AI.Bugs plague this game, and the AI constantly does things it should not be able to do, such as land planes in territories it just captured. The sad part is, the AI cannot even take advantage of it's cheating ways.If you've played this game at least once against a decent human opponent, you'll crush the AI.If you're an advanced player, challenge yourself by removing all the units of one of your countries from the board, or adjusting the price of all the AI's units to 1 I.P.C. - not that it matters, the poor AI still purchases units as if the normal I.P.C. values applied, buying tons of infantry instead of deeply discounted power units. The only difference between Iron Blitz and Hasbro's first release of A&A is that I.B. includes the last patch Hasbro ever put out for this game, a few scenarios which are relatively un-fun (especially since the A.I. still plays the scenarios like it was playing standard A&A), and a pretty extensive mod tools, if you like playing around with the map, yourself.

I've not been able to get the online multiplayer connection to work consistently, so I can't report on the quality of this part of the game.

Hasbro stopped supporting this game as soon as they released it, as best I can tell.So don't expect any improvements.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of "light" wargaming
It would be easy to berate this game for it's oversimplified handling of WWII.However, I think that's it's biggest charm.Even for the novice, I think it would be relatively easy to learn the ins and outs of this wonderful game.I 've had this one for a long time, and it's one game that I always come back to when I can't find anything else to play. It's followed me from Windows 95 to ME to 2000 and finally XP (yes, it does work in XP; just use compatibility mode). The only real drawbacks I see with this game are that the AI is a bit predictable, and the game does crash once in a great while.Other than that, I highly recommend it!An oldie, but a goodie...

3-0 out of 5 stars OOOO Boy
This game really pissed me off. While its true that A&A is the best strategy board game since chess, this game still managed to aggravate me. Whenever I would try to play, the game would slow down after a while. It would run great for a while, but after about 10 minutes there was a 1 or 2 second delay on every click that I made. And after 45 minutes it would just crash. If anyone has any suggestions on how to stop the slowing, then e-mail me at StubbsMcGriff@yahoo.com

Until I get this fixed, I won't be playing much Axis and Allies on PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hasbro?
OK, new name, but Hasbro is Hasbro & that means wiennie games!Computer can't win, it stops playing, takes it's baseball & bat & goes home crying.Over $100 for Hasbro (now Microprose)?Yeah, sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars great game, hard to find
This game is sweet, although it is imposible to find.....Well unless you want to pay the current rate of $129 for a used game that cost $19 new.My old copy was played so many times I wore it out.Since then it has been discontinued when there was somuch potential for improvement. If I could buy the rights and new enough about programing I would make this game even better, adding atomic bombs and other upgrades to the pc game.I cant find were to contact Micropose or Infogames to get this game back out on the market.Seeing how hard it is to buy I know it would be wise for them to release it or another version. I need help please contact me at mheard@goamb.com ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Warhammer 40K: Fire Warrior is Snoozehammer 40K, ZZZzzzz...
Don't buy this, you will only encourage people to write crummy games - even cheap, it's a waste of money.

There are no saves, the player has to complete missions or objectives or start over. The graphics are uninteresting as is the game design.

Even the plot is lame. Be the good 'Tau' and kill the evil humans. This may appeal to Columbine types, I suppose.

Save your money and buy Max Payne 2, a bit lame but much more fun to play as a shooter. It has some atmosphere too.

2-0 out of 5 stars WH40K has never been so bad
Having witnessed the evolution of first person shooters and the WH40k universe of games first hand, I have trouble believing how unbelievably bad this game is.Apparently, Games Workshop will lend their WH40K license to anyone.

Visual experience:While the graphics engine is up to the task, the textures and level design are completely uninspired, making this game a visually bland experience.Although, I did enjoy the cut scenes which were well done, with the exception of poor voice talent. With this small exception, this game lacks any style whatsoever.

Weapons:Despite the game being set in the 41 Millennium, the weapons are about as deadly as a roman candle. The Pulse Rifle for example is well over a meter long and looks to weigh 100 kilos, yet it takes several shots to take out an unarmored imperial guardsman, even at point blank range.

Level Design:This game reverts to the stone age of the genera. These guys have apparent missed 15+ years of evolution.I had the feeling of being a trail horse, leisurely making my way about the countryside, not being able to choose my path or stray from the path that I was on.I found that you really don't have to pay attention to your mission or any of the plot development.Just continue to move forward, killing bad guys... If you run into a locked door, find a switch.

Gameplay:Take away the fancy graphics, and you're a playing a Doom II clone, without the cool weapons, spooky atmosphere or feeling of eminent danger.Strafe is the name of the game here boys and girls.Constantly run from side to side, back and forth behind cover and unload on your enemies and you'll be fine.Repeat until game complete.I found this game incredibly easy.I never felt I was in any danger of not completing my mission, even though I rarely knew or cared what it was.The whole game felt like a chore.I kept playing to find out if there was something I was missing. This game was clearly designed for the console platforms. The fact that you cannot use the mouse in the main menu was the first clue to the quality of this game. Then I found out that there are NO SAVE GAMES.Your progress is updated every time you reach a checkpoint.I thought this was banished from PC gaming years ago.

Even if you enjoy mindless action, I can think of a dozen titles that do it better than this game.If you only play it because it is WH40K, this is the ONLY WH40K game that I would suggest skipping all together. If you want to play WH40K FPS style, try Space Hulk, you may actually have fun.If you are an adolescent, not concerned with concepts like realism or suspense, missed doom II the first time around, and have nothing else to de except watch paint dry, this is the game for you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, but not horrible
Innovative? No.Unique? Not really.Flawed? Sure.Bad game? Nah.As critical as I am of video games, I can't really say Fire Warrior is all that bad.A few things could have been done diffrently to make it a bit more enjoyable.Basically, its a classic Quake/Doom-style shoot-em-up, which I personally can appreciate since I grew up playing the aforementioned games.I actually do see some potential for "What could have been" here, but in the end its pretty much just a generic FPS experience. The graphics, I think, are actually pretty good.Contrary to much of what I've read, the view models are pretty nice , well animated and well skinned.Gameplay is decent, but a bit uninspired. The patch, which you will have to get yourself from the site (the built in updater didn't detect it for me) Improves the feel of the game a bit by eliminating some of the visual lag that occured pretty regularly in the unpatched version.Note that by visual lag, I'm not talking about FPS drop, I'm talking about times when the game seems to "skip" rather than just suffering a framerate hit. From what I can tell, this seems to be a popular workaround for framerate slowdowns, but in the end it is actually alot more annoying. Once patched, Fire Warrior delivers a solid if not especially exceptional jaunt through the Warhammer universe. Not a waste of money, but nothing really special. If you're just looking for some FPS action, go for it. Its more fun than Quake 2 was (as if that's really saying too much :D )

2-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
I'm afraid they really missed the mark on this one. First off there is supposed to be a printed manual with the game. Mine didn't have one and from various chat rooms neither did most other folks. The developer has acknowledged a packaging problem and the manual is available as a PDF download on the Firewarrior site.

There are a few good points. First the graphics are pretty good. Not the best you have seen but nice. The video sequences are well done and if you are a WH40K fan they are really cool. In fact they make you wish they would just do an animated movie this way for WH40K. Unfortunately the good points pretty much end there. The sound is not well done at all. Dialog is hard to understand, weapons fire is wimpy and your main weapon has so much low-end bass to it that after awhile the sound really gets on your nerves (if you have a subwoofer anyway). Artillery and other ambient sounds seem to cut in and out randomly. You just get a very sterile feel from the whole thing.

By far the worst part of the game though is the combat! The weapons are RIDICULOUSLY inaccurate. I mean you can be five feet away from an enemy and blast away and you'll be lucky to hit him once. If that wasn't bad enough it seems to take an entire clip of ammo to knock down even an Imperial Guard trooper. Ok, actually four shots will do it but you'll use a full clip trying to hit one that many times. SGTs take ten hits or more to take down as they come at you with their chainswords. One example: I entered a room and stopped to shoot at a stationary trooper across the room (a small room). I placed my cursor carefully dead center on the target (we were both stationary). I went through a clip and a half before he died. When you do manage to finally kill a guy the death throw is something out of a Shakespeare play as the guy takes ten minutes to die and fall over. This makes the game not only horrendously annoying but pretty much causes you to scream in frustration from the start.

The AI is also pretty sad. For the most part enemies will end up charging at you and then stop and blast away at you. Of course their weapons are as inaccurate as yours. SGTs and others with close combat weapons will run up to you then run away. In fact you often get the feeling the AI has some sort of pte-plotted movement pattern that the enemies run no matter what you do or where you are.

Other folks have commented on the lack of interaction, the annoying 'find a door key', as well as the claustrophobic feel to the game but those things would have been ok (well, the key thing is REALLY annoying as you back track through levels to get a stupid key). It's the other stuff that makes this game a real bomb. If you are a GW WH40K fan and can get it in the bargain bin for $10 maybe pick it up, otherwise pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful game!
I just finished playing the first few levels and had a blast!I just dont understand how anyone cannot like this game.I have played many first person shooters{and I mean many},and can tell you honestly, that Fire Warrior is one of the most enjoyable games I have played. It may not be as great as Halo,or several other games, but it is a very fine one and well worthy of the $29.00 price tag.Iv'e only played the first few levels and yet feel like I got my money's worth. The graphics may not be as good or crisp as some games but are still very good. Some have complained that they look dreary or drab but they dont understand that the warhammer world is portrayed in a dark and grim manner. It captures the mood and feel of the warhammer universe and the tie-in book Firewarrior, perfectly. It's so cool to do things in the game, that I read in the book.It was so cool to be running along a trench, and then see a Lemann Russ battle tank rumbling across the trench above my head. The whole game is just so cool! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Attack of the UPS men is hard but fun.
All the Columbian guys look like UPS men. Some of the levels are really hard, especially when you have to protect other people from attacks, but overall a good expansion pack.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Short.
Great Game, but I only gave it 3 stars since the game was way to short.I finished this game in two days, about 4 hours. If you are into Mutiplayer, you will probably get a lot more play time from the game.

Other than the game being short, I didn't find anything wrong and it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

5-0 out of 5 stars guns..............................
i dont have the game yet but i've played it enough to know that it is the best shooter around.my friend hade a little trouble installing but i have like a super computer.it has 2.60 ghz. the game is awsome u can join teams on the net like i already joined a friends team.im goin to tell u what the site name is.it is www.webspawner.com/users/nh54reg/index.html. join the team so we can make an invincable team and u have to be good at the game.the team does scrimmages and pactices.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay game
I don't play the signle player missions for this game so I can't tell you if it is a good signle play mission game or not. The only diffrence between Team Sabre and the regular Black Hawk Down game is that in Team Sabre there are new weapons and skins and maps. Online the game is better, it still has that invisible sniper problem but the lounge is much better. The awards are more detailed with better pictures of it. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to try new weapons to Blawk Hawk Down or wants new signle player Missions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game
I dont know what all you people are talking about as to why this game is hard to install. I had no probs installing it. And i dont have a Great comptuer, but i had no probs with it. It took me like 5 min to install and 1 more min to start playing. But I can say that The game and the multiplayer part are great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom
My mom threw the game out because it afect my mind. But now i got my favorit game back that just got thron away

5-0 out of 5 stars Hexen
I like Hexen.I played it when i was 2 years old but my mom threw it out thats a pain.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been a lot better
The first of the highly scrutinized "Quake killers" to hit the shelves, Hexen II delivers a mighty blow, but ultimately fails to knock the king off his throne. Make no mistake: Hexen II is a game with many strengths - its design is superior to the original Hexen, it has a significant payoff for single players winding through its twisted corridors, and visually it is without equal in the action genre. But the game's attempt to break from the standard first-person shooter mold has some nasty side effects, and the end result is a confusing and often frustratingly difficult experience. You choose your character from one of four character classes - assassin, necromancer, crusader and paladin - and set out on a quest to destroy the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Following their demise, you must combat the third Serpent Rider, Eidolon (his two siblings having been vanquished in Heretic and Hexen). There's a thread of a story tying the whole premise together, but it really just serves as a means of dropping you into the lush, graphically rich environments. Which isn't necessarily a criticism - the environments are the best thing about Hexen II, especially when playing the GL version. You'll explore five beautifully texture-mapped realms - a medieval village, a Meso-American temple, an Egyptian tomb, a Greco-Roman palace, and a gloomy cathedral. The visual detail - with tiled mosaics at the bottoms of pools and hieroglyphics on the walls of tombs - is like nothing ever seen in the action genre. In fact, it is not an overstatement to say that Hexen II is one of the most beautiful games ever made. But while the artistic design is truly spectacular, the level design is often confusing. Like Hexen, Hexen II is divided into "hubs," groups of interconnected levels that are intended to break up the monotonous "kill monsters, find key, open door, kill some more" design of typical first-person shooters. You must traverse back and forth through the various levels in each of the game's five hubs, finding objects and solving puzzles to gain entrance to new areas. This concept is sound, and indeed generally does succeed in giving you the feeling that you are in an environment, rather than a loosely connected series of passageways. But as you descend further and further into the game, a number of frustrating problems arise. For one, the secret areas that are common to the genre are not simply rewards for the stalwart wall-hitter; in Hexen II you must find the majority of them in order to proceed. This leads to much backtracking though levels, searching every nook and cranny for some overlooked chink in the wall that may lead to a new area, bashing every bookcase in hopes of finding some means of continuing. The backtracking can be especially frustrating once you've killed all of the monsters in the available areas.
The second problem is that the puzzles in Hexen II are of the "push some buttons in the right order" variety. For example, at one point in the Roman hub, you must press four buttons - each embossed with an elemental symbol - in a particular order. The clues for solving these stumpers are sometimes vague (as in the case of the constellation puzzle in the Egyptian hub) and, in worst cases, nonexistent. Often the clues, such as notes on tables, are indistinguishable from decorative objects and the fear that you may have missed some important tidbit makes you feel the need to walk up to every piece of furniture in every room from every possible angle. These types of design problems almost hobble the game, but Hexen II has enough payoff to make struggling through the difficult areas worth the hassle. At the end of each hub waits one of the four Horsemen, animated with astonishing detail; and Eidolon, the final boss, looks unbelievable. Go ahead and use a stone of summoning when fighting Death and watch as your demon and the Winged Reaper fight it out against a blood-red sky. It's really amazing. As for the more common monsters you'll encounter, there are some nice innovations, despite the lack of variety (there are only eleven basic types). Monsters will duck to avoid your attacks, and there are area-specific monsters to match the various environments, such as the Roman medusa and the Egyptian mummy. The weapons also sacrifice quantity for quality - the character-specific art and effects are nice, but there are only four weapons per class. And the classes themselves have some subtle differences - attack ability, special powers - but not enough to make a significant change to the experience. Of course, most of the aforementioned problems dissipate when playing multiplayer, and it proves a much better game against human opponents; even the differences between character classes are more interesting when fighting one another. But Hexen II's deathmatches aren't as purely visceral as Quake's - the assortment of power-ups and magical items often results in simply unloading all of your stuff on an opponent, and it becomes a case of "he who has the most toys wins." A lot of work went into Hexen II, and it shows. But that doesn't stop the feeling that the game was rushed in the latter days of completion. It crashes as a result of simple commands (such as accidentally "quickloading" when you haven't "quicksaved"), level load times are unbearable (we're talking sometimes over a minute), and each of the hubs concludes with the slow-scrolling text that has seemed like a sick joke since Doom II. In the end, Hexen II has a lot of rewards, but the curious should be warned: It takes a great deal of perseverance to find them.

4-0 out of 5 stars a classic
If you like action games like Quake, Blood, and Half Life, then Hexen 2 is a must. I played the first set of games called Heretic and Hexen. Hexen two is just fantastic though, it crosses several interesting worlds ranging from egypt to medieval. Great game.

4-0 out of 5 stars They do it again
The second installment in the Hexen series is definitely well done.Like the first one you are allowed to choose from different characters to play with.Allowing a different twist to the game with each one you play.

Built using the Quake engine it actually takes graphics a step further. We've come a long way since Heretic, and it's been quite a fun path. The puzzles aren't overly difficult or thought provoking, but the main point of this game is action anyway. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is a first- andthird-person tactical combat game set in 1985 detailing a fictional conflict betweenNATO and the Soviet Union. As a soldier fighting against the Soviets, you're onthe frontline of the conflict and charged with a number of missions, includingsabotage, recon, combat, assassination, and fending off enemy attacks. The gameis very successful in its approach, but stumbles when it forces you to playvehicle-only missions where you control a tank, an attack helicopter, or an A-10tank killer.

Over the course of the game's 50 single-player missions and campaigns, you'llassume several combat roles, running the gamut from a grunt armed with an M-16to a tank commander commanding an M1A1 Abrams tank into battle. The bulk of thegame consists of you tromping around on foot in first- or third-person mode, andthose missions are a great deal of fun. Firefights are intense, chaotic, andoften confusing, and they capture what it must feel like to be an infantrysoldier caught in a battle. In addition, the included multiplayer mode is a lotof fun, although it can lag at times.

Getting used to the controls can take awhile, and will definitely be a hurdlefor folks used to the simple keystrokes of most action games. Everything ishandled in a realistic manner: standing from the prone position takes a fewseconds, the sight on your weapon bounces around as you move, and you can hearyour soldier's labored breathing when you sprint across open ground. In fact, you can only sprint for a short distance before tiring (and slowing), whichencourages players to make short advances from cover to cover--just like a realsoldier. Even the gunfights are realistic: instead of the extreme close-quarterscombat and bright crosshairs found in most action games, OperationFlashpoint challenges you to line up a faraway, crouching soldier in thefixed iron sights of a real-world rifle. Successful missions earn a promotion inrank for you and the men under your command; controlling your squad is simpleand straightforward and involves just a few keystrokes.

On the downside, the difficulty with the complex controls is compounded amillion times when you play as a tank commander, where you must issue move andfire orders to the rest of the tank crew. These missions are very frustrating, especially because you can only save once per mission. Because of that, you'llfind yourself replaying the tank missions again and again and again.

Operation Flashpoint sports a decent graphics engine that is capable ofrendering massive and realistic outdoor areas. These large areas really make youfeel like you're part of a huge battlefield, complete with forests, scrub, anddozens of vehicles and soldiers. The price you pay is in the form of blockyplayer models and pixilated plants. In addition, graphical glitches, such assoldiers' heads being on backward, rear up from time to time.

Fans of quick-twitch games such as Quake III will probably be turned offby Operation Flashpoint's realistic gameplay and slower pace. Everyoneelse will find an exciting, engaging, intense cold war combat game. --KilmicRobbins

Pros:

  • Intense action
  • Decent AI
  • Multiplayer is a blast
  • Realistic combat
  • Accurate representations of 1980s military technology
Cons:
  • Vehicle-centric missions stink
  • Control takes some getting used to
  • Only 1 save per mission

4-0 out of 5 stars Military Buff's Game of Choice
Operation flashpoint is a Tactical first person shooter set in a 1980's "cold war turns hot" scenario. For those of you not in the know, while most First person shooters focus on rambo-style action, tactical shooters emphazise realism, planning, and ussually allow you to control a team.

The plot isn't exactly a novelty, A soviet invasion of a small group of Islands results in a serious clash between US and Russian forces. The story is enough to drive the gameplay however and make you feel you are fighitng for a purpose.

The game differentiates itself from others in the genre in many ways. To begin with, this is the first FPS I've seen that attempts to completely simulate combined arms combat, with a commitment to militarily accuracy. A complete compliment of 1980's military hardware is featured in the game, from abrahams tanks, to AH64 Apache Longbows, to T-80 Tanks, to a number of accuratley reproduced firearms. The selection is amazing. A large selection of machine guns, sub machine guns, grenades, tanks, planes, helocopters, APCs, and even boats are available. Each has SPECIFIC and very different features and specs. You can actually notice accuracy differences between rifles. And you can use ALL of them!

That's a BIG selling point for this game. Before Battlefield 1942 and other games like it, Operation Flashpoint was perhaps the first game to feature combined arms. So not only is it a first person shooter, but it's a tank simulator, a flight sim, and a driving game! And you can use ANY vehicle in the game. You see a car in a small town - get in a drive. You see a dead enemy soldier with a weapon, drop what you got and pick up his instead. You can even get in boats. This kind of freedom is definatley unusual.

The landscape and mission paradigm is also free form. You can go ANYWHERE. You are never limited as to where you can go in a mission, and you can get in a car and drive miles in the wrong direction if you so choose. You can complete any mission in whatever way you like too - sneak into a town and complete your mission, or jump into an empty enemy tank and blow everyone away.

Realism is a key emphasis. Get shot a few times, or once in the head, and you're dead. Get your legs shot up and you can't run as fast, or may have to crawl around. Shoot out a tire on a truck and it goes flat. Shoot an engine you might disable it completely. You have a compass and map, and a watch to tell time and there is a realist time cycle - it will change from day to dusk to night at appropriate times - and there is also weather variations. Run too long and you get tired. I've rarely seen such dedication to realism in a game.

This realism extends to graphics and sounds. All vehicles are accuratley rendered both inside and out. You can choose first person or 3rd person view, so you can actually sit inside a tank and look around at the inside. Detail is present in graphics - there is even a working speedometer on car dashboards! The use of sprites and less than perfect textures on some objects like houses and fauna limits the eye candy to some degree but otherwise the game looks really good, especially for being a 2001 release. Sound is great, and very realistic. Hearing bullets whiz by you or the reverb of a tank shot is enough to convince you that you're actually in danger!

The problems with the game are bugs. Motion is can be stuttery at times, and occasionally you'll get stuck, or pass through solid matter - if only the army got ahold of that technology! The controls for the various vehicles can have some issues, as flying is a real pain. Driving too, isnt perfect - OFP is a jack of all trades and a master of none. The realism also makes for a VERY difficult gaming experience at times. The WORST mistake was the choice to limit you to only ONE save per mission. A HUGE pain. You will no doubt have to play the same parts of a hard mission over and over and over thanks to this, and while it adds to realism, players should always be given the option to save more if they choose. This really can hurt the gameplay experience. I often become frustrated with this, especially since all it takes is one tiny wrong move to get yourself a in body bag.

Bottom line: This was a ground breaking game. If you love detailed realistic games and are a military enthusiast, you will have an orgasm playing this game! Just be prepared for a first person war simulation - NOT at all an arcade game. If you just like quick action then you best look somewhere else. This is a great game that needs some polishing, hopefully the sequel will address the flaws. I recomend buying the game of the year addition which costs the same and includes all the add ons and expansion packs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game, if flawed
Operation Flashpoint is a great game
Pros:
Grear army, tank, helecopter sim
Long Campaign, good, if a bit unrealistic plot
Lots of weapons and vehicles
Great sound
Varied objectives
Some great graphics
Huge maps
Cons:
Poor voice acting
Cant reload and move at the same time
Bad clipping
Bad graphics up close
A few bugs

Overall: A great military sim, if you can overlook the flaws

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome - esp for a bargain bin game!
This game did not get the popularity or the recognition it deserved. First off, it was one of the first tactical combat FPS simulators where you could actually drive any vehicle, explore endless environments, etc.. and it was released a whole year before some other games that could do the same (BF1942 comes to mind). You can do so much in this game, it's too awesome. Like pick up rifles, ammo, grenades off dead soldiers. You can snipe, assault, drive, use heavy ordinance. It's truly awesome. Also, I picked up a utility off of Fileplanet/Gamespy which allows you to do multiple saves in-mission. This will help alleviate any stress some gamers may feel when they play this game - it feels that real when you pllay it. Cheers!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ...speachless
Im..Im just proud i even played it. OF:CWC is the most realistic team based game there is. This is what started me on the genre.... and im glad it did! There is just soo much effort put into this game that you forget that you are in your house but... im not saying you will feel you're in the game because thats chessy but that its just you and the computer in a totally black room. Now.... this is a extremly team game because your commander is right when he says noone wants to be a hero.. i learned this myself... you need your team to stay alive... everybody has their own job and its just WOW... listen get this game... then get expansion(s)... then ghost recon...then that expansion(s)...then get battle field 1942 and then those expansion(s).... LISTEN, just get the game and thats a order SOLDIER!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game ever!
I don't understand those who say this is a crappy game.
I love it, and I've spent many days in front of my pc because of this.

The single player campaign is awsome, I like the ranking system.
If your good at tossing grenades, then you'll end up as a grenadier.

Flying a chopper is fun, and in multiplayer when someone needs an airstrike, I'll be more then happy to help.
They just need to tell me the coordinates and that area will be filled with craters very shortly.

If you see an AA missiles coming at you, eject!
then you'll have to continue the fighting on foot.

I remember all the sweet moments of playing, for example when I was multiplaying I saw three tanks in the valley below.
I was sitting in a bush, with a RPG launcher.
3 well placed rockets and the tanks were history.

But there is some things that ar'nt that realistic.
For example, the LAW launcher is not reloadable as it is in the game, but I guess it was made so to compensate with the RPG.

I have three final words for you; BUY THIS GAME!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Every so often, a game comes along that completely redefines a particular genre. In 1998, Half-Life ignited first-person shooters with its addicting blend of storytelling and action sequences. Homeworld, a polished, groundbreaking first-time effort from Relic Entertainment, attempts to change the way gamers play real-time strategy games. In the past, none of these 3-D games have accomplished the daunting task with the same gorgeous visuals and tactical game play as Homeworld.

Upon the discovery of an ancient galactic map inscribed with the words "our home," the people of Kharak began construction of a massive mother ship and fleet to traverse the galaxy and reach their long-rumored home world. Players construct, maintain, and control the Kharak fleet through 16 challenging single-player missions or against fellow humans on Sierra's WON.net online gaming service. During the solo campaign, you'll face literally hundreds of enemy vessels. All friendly and enemy ships, ranging from small, yet dangerously quick interceptors to the powerful, though expensive destroyers and heavy cruisers, are rendered with exquisite detail; further, expect plenty of impressive visual effects, from the glowing ship exhaust to fiery explosions. Adding to the pluses, Homeworld's thoughtful interface design eases the intense--and often complicated--resource gathering and combat situations. --Doug Radcliffe ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Gaming Experience
Homeworld was not easy to learn -- the startup tutorial helps you get the hang of controlling your units in true 3-D space -- but that's what sets the standard for a new class of games.

I bought Homeworld for $ at CompUSA, after it was already 2 years old. What luck! The game is engrossing. The graphics and sound are spectacular, and the game's pace is a mix of frantic battles and eerie, downright creepy exploration. There's plenty of familiar strategy to start with: build units, gather resources, and research new tech.

But it's the realistic way that you manage your ships in 3-D space, with rotation and scaling that are really intuitive once you get comfy with it, that makes this game a mindblower.I've played most, if not all, new games in the past 5 years, and this one is near the top of my value-per-hour-played list.

Get it, even if it's used.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5+!
Spectacular! This is easily one of the best games I have ever played! The graphics are wonderful, and the ease of scrolling and views you can take are second to none! Some RTS games such as Far Gate, Star Trek Space Armada and Empire Earth slow up to be impossible to play when you have a lot of units in play, but with Homeworld this is not a problem. Game creaters could learn a lot from this!
A great feature is the amount of space warfare you get to do. I love that! As I was going through the game I started to feel a bit as though the missions were a little too easy, as I was using the same strategy for aboutt hree of them with success, but I realised that I has spoken too soon! I am right on the last part of the game now and I am finding it impossible to beat. I can't believe that after only just managing to beat one wave of ships, another one appears immediately with the same fire power.
I haven't had any problems with the inteface. I find its complexity adds to the realism of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME strategy game
Sierra makes really good games, and this is one of them.Homeworld is an awesome strategy game and it's probably my favorite other than Starcraft.Anyway, this game is well worth the money. It has great multiplayer that you can do against the cpu or people, and great graphics.Good gameplay and a good storyline. Conclusion:this game is incredibly good and well worth the money.I'm also looking forward to ordering Homeworld Cataclysm(I hope that's spelled right),which I think will be a good game too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best game Since Pax Imperia: Entiment Domain
PROS:

1) Great single player storyline and plot with good cinimatics in between missions.

2) Most missions are well thought out and unpredictable

3) Optional Great graphics on powerful computers, optional great performance on slower computers

4) Included multiplayer system works well and is free. Usually not to busy but there are always at least 20 people on. Usually over 50!!

5) Build many kinds of ships, each having their own strenths and abilities.

6) 3D enviorment is well designed and easy to manuver through.

7) Use different formations, attack setting, grouping, etc. to make the most out of your attacks.

8) Good sound effects and music

CONS:

1) Harvesting system isn't the best ever, but works well on a good map

2) Included map editor unreliable and hard to use

3) focusing to close on a battle causes incredible lag, esspecially durring internet gameplay.

4) The 2 different races almost exactly alike

5) GRAVITY WELL GENERATORS PISS ME OFF (You'll know what I'm talking about when you start playing this game online!) :)

6) More ships would be nice :)

5-0 out of 5 stars An innovative game for the true Science Fiction fan
I bought Homeworld when it was first released, in 1999. When I first played the game, my reaction was the same as that of many others who have posted their reviews - the interface was difficult to master, the missions were too difficult. Eventually, I gave up and put Homeworld back onto the shelf. It's now 2001, and Homeworld has built up a huge following on the internet. So I re-installed the game on my computer...and got a major surprise.

The first time round, I'd seen this games flaws. It DOES have a difficult to master interface. Its missions are VERY difficult to play - especially those set in the Garden of Kadesh nebula (missions 7 - 9). The big difference is that there are many sure-fire strategies posted on the internet that can assist you in getting past the more difficult missions.

Once you've gotten used to the interface, and the totally new mind-boggling environment of real 3D space, Homeworld is a surprisingly enjoyable game. The graphics are what draw you in first. Two years after it was first produced, and I find the graphics to be totally entrancing. I'm not sure whether even new games like Sacrifice or Giants: Citizen Kabuto can surpass it...at least not without upgrading your PC to a 1GHz CPU.

Like the Command & Conquer games, you have to harvest resources and build a massive army. But there are two big differences - the space fleet you build in one mission is carried over into the next mission. I enjoy this aspect of the game - there's a deep sense of satisfaction when you see the massive fleet of 10 ion-cannon frigates, 5 destroyers and 2 heavy cruisers you just built.

The second major difference is that you can capture other spaceships and add them to your fleet. Annoyed with those pesky multi ion-beam frigates attacking your mothership? Just send a squadron of salvage corvettes after them and capture the entire fleet! This is definitely one of the most important aspects of playing Homeworld - learning how to sneak a squad of salvage corvettes towards an enemy fleet.

The story isn't terribly original. What is original is the style in which it is presented. This is no slick, Hollywood-produced motion-picture like Tiberian Sun or Red Alert 2. The production style is much closer to a pared-back Japanese anime. To be honest, despite the comparisons to Star Wars or Star Trek, Homeworld is a much closer relation to Star Blazers, Robotech or Macross. Especially when you have spaceships like the Heavy Cruiser (a very close relation to Robotech's SDF-1), or the Destroyer (Star Blazers fans will LOVE the wave-motion gun effects from its ion-cannons!).

In conclusion, I strongly recommend Homeworld to strategy gamers with an open mind. When it was first released, very few people had the PC's with sufficient processing power to play this game. Now? If you have anything faster than a Pentium III 450MHz, then I can't recommend this game highly enough. It is a classic that you'll be hooked on and playing years from now. Just buy this game. You won't regret it. ... Read more

When SWAT 3 was first released it faced two major criticisms, namely a short mission list and a lack of multiplayer options. Both of these have been addressed by the SWAT 3: Elite Edition, which sports a totalof21 missions and full multiplayer support for up to five players in deathmatchorcooperative games. Add to this a well-organized mod interface for facilitatingfurther enhancements to the game as they are developed and a fully fledgedscenario editor and you can no longer criticize this game for a lack oflongevity.

With these issues resolved, you are left with the most impressive portrayal oftactical squad action in the first-person shooter genre to date. Set in thenearfuture in Los Angeles, you are placed at the head of a five-man armed responseteam of the LAPD. A conference on world peace plays the backdrop to justifyallthe crazies coming out of the woodwork. This provides you with a stream oflinear missions ranging from hostage situations to disarming missiles, all setin real-life locations.

While the likes of Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament offer"all-guns- blazing" action, subtlety is the order of the day in SWAT 3. A single bullet can put you down. With no health pack round the corner to come to yourrescue, you need to employ guile and teamwork to survive. Unlike similargames, such as Rainbow Six, the teamwork isn't planned prior to the missions;rather it is managed on the fly with a number-driven tiered command system foryour two-man teams. It works beautifully for the most part, and with ascaleableAI, you can ensure both your compatriots and the suspects put up a convincingdisplay. This, combined with superb audio that blends information and suspensethrough radio chatter, well-modeled graphics, and tense gameplay, makesSWAT3: Elite Edition a worthy addition to any gamer's collection. --JasonWeston ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best tactical shooter OF ALL TIME!!!
When you get down to it, the rainbow six games are overrated. SWAT teams handle much more than international terrorism, a fact which SWAT 3 protrays vividly. The AI is incredible and really makes for a good sim. Buy this game. It's a good price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good gameplay, runs on almost all systems, etc.
SWAT 3 has great gameplay, combined with good controls and a realistic AI. Also worth noting is that the AI enemies are placed in random locations throughout the maps, allowing for more interesting replays of missions (the bad guys aren't always in the same spot!).

Another thing that's worth noting is that the game will run on almost any system (Celeron processor? No problem!). I've personally observed it running at fast rates on fairly old computers that have Celeron processors.

The only downside to the game is its infamous last mission. The last mission tries to force the player to move quickly through the map (due to a timer), in a failed attempt to delay the time that it takes for someone to complete the game. This only results in the last mission not encouraging the player traits that are so heavily encouraged in previous missions: patience and strategy.

Over all, though, it's a great game. I highly recommend that you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLOSEST YOU WILL GET TO CQB!!! FROM A MARINES EYE VIEW
I am a US Marine and have been trained in CQB by DEA, Navy Seals, Delta Force, and alot more other organizations. This is the closest you will ever get besides being in a stack and doing the real thing. The weapons are not some made up [junk] they are what we really use. 4-0 out of 5 stars Simply put...
Simply put, Red Faction is a good shooter. It's fun, the graphics are decent, and it's funny. It's different in that it's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously.I often chuckle at the things that happen in the game and the way my enemies will cry for mercy before I blow them up or shoot them. For the price you've got a very good value here.If you're a shooter fan, then get a copy of Red Faction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great FPS ( First Person Shooter )
Red Faction is 1 of the best fps of 2001. It has an exciting story that gets you hooked. It has tons of fun wepons for all your fragging needs. THis game has a exciting new game engine called GEO-MOD tech which basicly means that u can blow up the environment. Some fun things you could do with this is make a foxhole, blow holes in walls to get to secret areas, or even blow up a bridge to stop movimg tanks or forces in their tracks! This game is very good at lighting and visual effects too. This game has many fun and exciting secrets and mysteries to find. Just for a little tidbit the funniest thing i saw was lighting bots in multiplayer on firewith flamethrowers! They run around screaming like little girls until u see their burning corpse drop to the floor!!! I would recemend this game to anyone who enjoys action/adventure, first person shooters, or just blowing stuff to oblivion!!! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great 1st person shooter
I bought this game recently, and I am REALLY satisfied. This game is great, especially now that its only $$$, it provides a great challenge, but not unbearably hard.it has many times of weapons, even a gun that shoots through walls. The multiplayer is also great, because there is always someone on it.The levels in it are also nice, some are big, some are small, and some are in between, and theres 3 game modes, such as Deatch Match, Team Death Match, and Capture the flag.Since this is only $$$ now, I would highly recomend it for anyone looking for a cheap 1st person shooter that is very good, I would also recomend it to anyone who just wants a first person shooter.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Did you have a good day at the office, Dear?"
Do you have a boring job that you despise? A whip-cracking boss you despise? Not enough money? Irritating co-workers?

That's nothing. You could be Parker, a miner working in the red bowels of a Martian iridium mine, run by the vast and ruthless intergalactic Ultor Corporation (Umbrella, anyone?). And if you port up THQ's "Red Faction" to your computer, you *are* Parker---and get to have what is possibly the worst day on the job of all time.

Parker is having a rough time of it as a new Ultor miner: the food is lousy, the pay is worse, and the guards are everywhere. Worse yet, a Plague is sweeping the mines, and Parker's buddies are dropping like flies. What to do? Pick a fight with an overbearing guard and join the Red Faction Revolution, of course!

"Red Faction" suffered from two problems that can sink a good game or movie: 1) Inadequate marketing; and 2) a release date that coincides with a much anticipated blockbuster. In "Faction"'s case, the blockbuster was "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"; in the "Wolfenstein" mania, "Faction" sank unnoticed. Indeed, I purchased Wolfenstein and Red Faction in the same week; I put Faction on the hopper, shot a few guards, and then replaced it with Wolfenstein. I totally forgot 'Faction until yesterday, when, looking for a good way to kill a few hours, I happened upon my pristine "Red Faction" disks.

I didn't expect much more than a few hours of blasting at security goons, having some fun, and enjoying some decent graphics. Surprise! "Red Faction" is what I call an "all-nighter" game: you quickly get addicted at about 6 o'clock at night, and find yourself finishing off the Big Boss at 5 the next morning.

It's that good.

The story is straightforward, fast-paced, and nothing original: with everyone shooting at you, you quickly 'join up' with the Red Faction, possibly the most inept and ineffective revolutionary group in video game history. Your fellow miners, urged to 'join the Revolution', are useless: like the red-shirted security guys in Star Trek, their lives are measured in nanoseconds. The rest of the game, you carry out little acts of sabotage, assassination, and general mayhem at the direction of the Revolution's witchy leader, Eos; you're also helped out by Hendrix, whose enviable task while you do all the grunt work is to sit at his computer console in a cubicle and coach you along (he also sounds like a dead ringer for Denzel Washington).

Why are you blowing up nuclear reactors, destroying orbital space stations, and going wild with an assault rifle in the middle of the office lunchroom? That's the funniest thing of all: Parker, bored miner, pretty much goes with the (Eos) flow. And hey, it's FPS! That's the other thing that's actually enjoyable about "Red Faction" (apart from the over-hyped Geo-Mod technology---translation: you can blow a big hole in the wall and walk into it): the game is actually nasty enough to provide you with big weapons of mass destruction and then set you free in an office, or even a hospital. Yeah, you shouldn't shoot the office workers or the nurses---but if you're having a bad day...

GRAPHICS: 9/10. Faction is graphically impressive, and the environments are detailed, well thought out, and visually dramatic. The frame-rate is crisp and fluid, unusual for a game that looks this good (better than Half-Life). The art is also cool and has a kind of retro-Soviet look.

AUDIO: 10/10. The sound in Faction is superb, particularly the weapons: nothing beats that nasty chuckle of the assault rifle, or the throaty burr of the heavy machine gun.

GAMEPLAY: 7/10. 'Faction is fast and furious, but there are a number of frustrating places where you'll need to save early and often. The finale, which should have been great, is a letdown, and the game seems to just fizzle out when it could have gone on (a la Halo) to something bigger.

'Red Faction' is fun for a night's killfest, and impressive to look at; a pity it sputter out at the end. Gamers of the world, unite! You have Mars to gain, and nothing to lose ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Faction
I played this game for the first time at my friends house over a LAN/Network hookup, and it was so amazingly fun! The graphics are okay, but they are showing age. The weapon technology is amazing! Theres like 15 weapons and some of them are: Heavy Machine gun, Rocket Launcher, Precision rifle, Sniper rifle, grenades, and the best weapon is the Magnetic Rail Driver. That weapon drives metal slugs through the walls! The coolest thing is that when you right-click with the rail driver, you use an infrared scope (heat seeking) to see your enemies through walls! The single player part is alot like Half-Life, so itll be fun if you liked Half-Life. BUY THIS GAME AND GOOD LUCK>>> JOIN THE FACTION! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking at the time, still a stunner.
This game really set a standard for head-to-head and group slugfests online, along with Quake. The graphics were top-notch and were greatly enhanced if you scored a co-processing graphics card (remember those?), and gameplay was something else.

Skipping the nostalgia for a moment, I'll outline the basic premise. You shoot stuff, and rescue hostages. That's about it, and it lacks subtelty in description because gameplay is equally blunt. The weapons are the main character here: bombs that will wipe you out, invisibility defenses that let you sneak up on enemies, mines that will follow targets around corners when triggered, and a gun that can only be described as a fully-automatic rail gun.

The levels are, without qualification, individual works of art.The designers (and the many free add-on levels you can download) are simply incredible, and depending on your particular strengths, you can always find a level to compete (although the level of competition can be extremely high).

If you play this game straight-through as one-player, you may tire of the big boss endings, and it does get ridiculously difficuly two-thirds of the way in.Still, if you manage it the game is a visual stunner and six degrees of freedom is something to behold.

If you have the nerve to fight a human opponent, you should still find plenty of takers for your challenge.Be warned, cheaters exist (albeit less in the broadband-for-all era) and if you suspect your game is rigged, you can always find another one.

Well what can I say, Descent 2 is one of the greatest games to ever come out on ANY system. If the vicious soundtrack doesn't grip you, the mindless and non-stop action surely will. Perfect in almost every single aspect, this game is a must-get for any gamer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going dooooooooown! WOOHOO!!!!
OK, I must say, even though this isn't the most complex game on the market these days, i still LOVE Descent 1 & Descent 2! They're 2 of my favorite "older" video games!!!

When they first hit the scene, they were quite the games!

Even today, these games offer a unique 3D experience!

While the Descent games are not the easiest to master (with the control pad), once you master the controls, these games are SERIOUS FUN!!!!

Basically, you're "MATERIAL DEFENDER"! The roughest, toughest space-ship flyer in the galaxy! Your job: To fly thru TONS ofunderground mines, and irradicate all the mean-eerie-inhabitant-mining-robots that exist in the mines.

Graphics are outrageous, cool enemy robots, vibrant colors, gameplay is totally cool, each level is so eerie & spooky, you're offered a miriad of awesome laser weapons & awesome missles, tons of power-up's, killer soundtrack (Featuring Type-O-Negative, Skinny Puppy, and a few other killer bands), and gameplay that will leave your head spinning! Your spaceship can rotate EVERY direction imaginable! Which can sometimes leave you not knowing which way "UP" or "DOWN" is.....Like I said, it can be real confusing at first, but once you master the flight controls, you will have some OUTRAGEOUS FUN!!!!!

Some of the mines & levels in this game, are some of the coolest levels I've seen in a game like this!

Cool storyline in this game, as well! Which leads me to the ONLY "CON" of the game:

There's no DESCENT 3 for the PS console!!!!!!

HELLO! HINT, HINT, HINT!!!!!
I hope you "Descent Designers" are reading this!!!!!!!!!!

I wanna know what happens to "Material Defender" dammit!

4-0 out of 5 stars Now here's a great game
This is one of my fav first person shooters ever.If you've ever played Descent, imagine Descent x4, and you get Descent 2. I even liked it much better than D3!But lets get to good/bad stuff:

I say you buy this bloody game JUST for the music! The songs kick so much butt, and you can play them in a cd player! It's got stuff from Ogre of Skinny Puppy, and Type O Negative.I have this to say, though:I think Skinny Puppy bites, even though the song he does on the soundtrack is cool, and I don't know which song Type O Negative does on the soundtrack, as none of the songs have Peter's trademark, strong, sensual voice. In fact, the soundtrack was what got me started on Type O Negative, even though the soundtrack is a mix of mostly heavymetal/techno.

My only complaint is it's too HARD, and the graphics aren't much better than Descent 1, but neither of those facts are of any consequence, aside from the detraction of 1 star.Nonetheless, I still think its a great game, because it is.God, the soundtrack!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of THE Best Computer Games!
When I first heard of Descent, I was immediately hooked.I loved the special efects, the weapons, and the huge levels. Then they made Descent 2.I got it immediately. With 30, gut-wrenching, vertigo-inducing, robot-thrashing, and mine-destroying levels, and 10 new weapons, with the original 10, made this an awesome sequel. From the laser to the earthshaker missile, from the harmless guide bot to the menacing theif bot, this game is DA BOMB! I highly recommend this game to any computer game player. An A++++++++++++++ Game!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

It's been nearly 10 years since Wolfenstein 3D foreverpopularized the first-person shooter, and at long last everyone's favorite Nazikiller, B.J. Blazkowicz, is back in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Setduring World War II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein finds the Nazisdabbling in the black arts in an effort to create an army of supersoldiers.Naturally, Blazkowicz is the only thing standing in the Nazis' way, so he's setbehind enemy lines in an effort to end the madness.

On the surface, the single-player game seems like pure gold--after all, everyoneloves killing Nazis. But the story jumps all over the place, the enemy AI isless than impressive, and most gamers will be able to finish the game in a mere10 to 15 hours. The single-player game falls short of the standards set bytitles such as Half-Life and No One Lives Forever.

In fact, the best thing about Return to Castle Wolfenstein is itsteam-based multiplayer mode. Each multiplayer adventure features Axis vs. Allies, andboth sides offer four character classes: engineer (removes obstacles), medic(heals and revives teammates), lieutenant (calls in air strikes and replenishesammo), and soldier (only class able to use sniper rifles, flamethrowers, andother unusual weapons). The game includes only eight multiplayer maps, but theyare all perfectly designed, and in order to be successful teams have to worktogether. The result is a great gaming experience that fans ofCounter-Strike or the Day of Defeat mode for Half-Life will reallyappreciate.

Graphically, Return to Castle Wolfenstein looks amazing. It uses thepowerful Quake III engine to great effect, and the character models, explosions, and lighting effects are all perfectly done. Alas, pretty graphicsand a great multiplayer game don't quite make up for an exceptionally averagesingle-player experience. --William Harms

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics
  • Great level design (including secret passages)
  • Awesome multiplayer mode
Cons:
  • Lackluster AI
  • Single-player game is very short

4-0 out of 5 stars Guilt-free genocide
I suppose if there are two groups whom it's acceptable and almost encouraged to slaughter, it would be Nazis and zombies. It's the only time a defendant could be on the witness stand and confess to his own benefit "Your Honor, they were really asking for it." Which is what makes Return to Wolfenstein so much fun. It's a historically accurate gothic WWII supernatural FPS. One of those rare combinations you throw in a blender and it comes out all yummy.

I'll briefly echo all the other compliments here: nearly photo-realistic graphics; pinpoint control, targeting, and collision detection; silky smooth operation in XP. Voice acting is believable. Weapon and explosion sounds are appropriately metallic and jarring. And the undead are scary as hell. I've played many of the good survival horror franchises, and none except Silent Hill 1 freaked me out like the zombies in Wolfenstein. It was a rare stroke of genius to introduce the Nazi grunts as sympathic victims of the undead hordes, showing scenes of your enemy's enemies devouring them alive. This creates a real hesitation and apprehension about the player's role that exacerbates the fear. In other words: me scared, good job.

So, if it rocks so hard, why not five stars? Well, this little revelation hit me about halfway through the game: instead of being the best Castle Wolfenstein it could be, id decided to make a very good cross between Medal of Honor and Wolfenstein. Which is a very good thing, but remember what set the first Wolfensteins apart from the rest were the exploration and "secret area" goodies. RtW would have been great if every level had been more like Paderborn (the best stage of RtW): more dungeon crawling, deeper and more inventive secret areas. I'm imagining innovative and useable secret goodies that enhanced gameplay, hidden by new concepts of concealing secret doors. You know, play to your strengths rather than copy someone else.

As it is, Return to Wolfenstein is a fun, pretty, and often scary offbeat shooter that's just a hair below the best of the more traditional WWII FPS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compatibility problems
I have this game, it used to play on my win 98 but since I upgraded to win xp it doesnt work anymore. Does anyone know why? How can I fix it? I doesnt help changing the compatibility settings.
Thanx a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Milestone in Gaming?
As most of you are aware, the video and PC gaming industry loves to hype games. In the last six years or so the games that got a LOT of attention prior to release include Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal 2, Black and White, and of course, Doom 3.As you can see from this list, not all of these games lived up to expectations.Considering the tremendous amount of hype that heralded the return of Wolfenstein, does Return to Castle Wolfenstein live up to expectations?

Mostly yes.The graphics in this game are definitely good, and they seem to approach photo-realism in some ways.It helps to run this game with a good video card, and I can tell you that although Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released in 2001, my Radeon 9800 graphics card still strains a bit if I turn all the settings up.The sound, level design, weapons, and enemy AI all are very good too.
