3-0 out of 5 stars the good, the bad ,and the moderated
Having played Realm for about 4years i finally broke free..
aka "gandster" my favorite mod was REDS and for the most part had very little problems until the change of the GUI...older systems had a heck of a time..but in all honesty i had alot of fun...its a turn based kinda game...unlike Diablo, or other hack and slash, pvping wasnt really to much of a problem unless you turned pvp on,Mechs there pretty much left most players to themselves and stuck /w fighting other pvpers...however..i do miss the old Devil trick bug *sigh*..the dungeons are quite interesting..and baby dragons (looking like a 50ft python) can be alil worrying facing them for the first time...townies seems to be in every town and love to gab...well there paying for it..
I left after pretty much going as far as i though i could and yes the promise of more updates just never seem to come...moderated channels have and will always be a pain..stay off them if you have something to say, most everything is turned to "offend" someone and mods pretty much make up the rules as they go...solo or groups the game for me was fun either way...
And A happy wave to all my old TrollBraggers

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waist
This game is a COMPLETE waist of time, money, and thought.

It is mainly run by unfair GM's with a god complex, to even begin a trial acount you have to hand over your credit card number, then for some reason beond human comprehension you decide to pay for this "game" the first rule you break will result in a warning, followed 10 seconds later by a disconnection from the server, only to find you have been susspended, however breaking a "rule" is not that hard, seeing as the player policy is written so, that the moderators are always right, despite any ammount of bad judgement.

In my experience acceptable reasons for a susspension-

1. Questioning a moderators action
2. Answering a question on the "Help" channel before a guide
3. letting your 4 year old child "spam" a moderated channel ONCE with "fdgjklkdg sgfs sdfsjlk"
4. Asking the "programer" when he will fulfill his promises

And should you decide to pay for another account after being wronged so, a bannable offense is killing a guide, or moderator's player cahracter for "screaming" obscinitys at you.

Thank you, Realm Team! for my enjoyable experience on this horrendously outdated game.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Realm - Great at what it is for.
First of all, Sirbenny and Asterix who wrote reviews here are both realm staff.(i.e. the oppressive moderators other poeple have mentioned)Now, Some people are complaining about moderation here, and some have been affected by strong moderation, but generally it is not as bad as these people make it out to be.They are most likely just people with gripes.I have played realm for about 5 years now, and have never had any problems.

The game is a lot like a throwback to an old sierra game like kings quest or quest for glory. The graphics are similar, and play is similar.(this game was actually originally developed by sierra, then bought)

Updates come sometimes.. not as frequently as most would like.

Basically what I would say is buy it and try it if you liked the old sierra games. The fee is cheaper than almost any other mmorpg's, and it is worth it in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Coming Back!
This game is a great game! i dont know how else to put it, i've been playing it for a long time. and from time to time i'll take a break from it but i always come back, and the great part is its cheap so its not costing me much when i dont play. ive purchased 3 accounts and group with myself to go hunting.the pvp isn't as great as it was but its better then any other game.its turn-based fighting is optimal for pvping because it takes strategy to win in a fight not quickness of the mouse clicking.i reccomend getting this game, more updates come monthly and sometimes weekly.another great thing is how much you can distinguish yourself from other players and feel individual in the game.the chatting is great and you'll make a lot of friends.seriously!

2-0 out of 5 stars Moderated chat room
The Realm is a cute online game where you can watch your pixels stand and proudly show your townie items. The game really has no aim.Hunting or PvPing there is no fun.I've played it for more than a year and I enjoyed meeting people there and chatting, but with time moderators seemed to get worse and worse, always finding a reason(not stated in the Player's policy, which you can find on the Realm official website)to suspend accounts or delete posts on the message boards.

A good thing however is that you can find there people who are ready to pay with real money for pixelated items and accounts, so you can make a lot of cash even though it's against the game's Players policy. One thing you'll get quickly bored of is all the promises for good updates you'll never get.

If you want to pay for a chatroom where you'll probably get suspended for not thinking like one of the moderators, get this game.If you're smart, go to a normal free chatroom. You can have fun with this game if someone gives you an account for free or if you have a lot of money to waste, but if you care about what you do with your money, don't give it to Codemasters.I'd be careful with their upcoming MMORPG Dragon Empires too because it will have the same kind of moderation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst 3D shooter I ever played
I paid $2 for this at Gamestop. It is worth about $-30, (yes, that is NEGATIVE $30), because I wasted three hours of my life. Most of that three hours was spent working as a JANITOR, where nothing fun is happening.
Most of the game play is spent walking around in circles in empty areas looking for the correct way out.Very boring.Enemies are not fun to fight. My favorite was the huge level with invisible enemies. How fun is it to spend hours going over the same layout again and again while looking for INVISIBLE creatures.
This could be the worst game I ever played.

Yes, I was stuck forever at the eco-dome, because there the door out wouldn't open.I think that might have been the bug referred to earlier.

Do not buy this game.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning folks, don't buy this one
This game is terrible.I bought it and it's the only game I've ever done the research into finding out the info to sending it back to it's parent company for a refund or been irritated enough to write a warning about.

1)I've played 2 hours so far and I've heard 3 lines of speech in the whole game.I've seen or been told NO information as to what the heck I'm supposted to do and end up blindly progressing foward.
2)The movement is messed up.You're either super fast or way slow.No middle ground.
3)Did I mention the only thing the 30 people I've seen have said is "nothing to say!" in an angry tone. Not even a complete sentance! And noone has told me what I'm doing except looking for a job as a janitor.
4)From the online sites I've seen, it takes a patch just to be able to pass the first 3 levels cause they forgot to put in a switch or some crap. Then you get to do it all over again after you put in the patch.
5)I have no Idea what I'm supposted to do.
6)Why am I flipping switches?
7)Why did I buy this game?

Go play an old dos game, go outside, do anything but buy or play this game as you will go dumb operating the switch cause it lights up green and for no other reason but that.

NW

1-0 out of 5 stars AAARGH!
Avoid this game. I was gobsmacked to read the positive reviews on this game.

There is little direction, you are left to wander about huge levels with chance bringing you across the necessary switch. The 4th level has caused me just to walk away from the game (Confluence). I cannot find a way out of the inital 3 levels. An online Game site I found said it was a bug so I downloaded an 80mb patch and had to replay from begining. Still no luck. Gamesite gave it 2.7 out of 10.

The plot sounds great but is awful in reality - the script is like a 50's B movie and rather than guiding into suspicion about the Corporation ejects you into the Ressistance with the speed and elegance as a bad case of diorrea.

I came across these reviews while trying to find BestBuys policy on returns of Software. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars I don't see what the problem is.....
I set this game up. I played it. I found it very satisfying. I did not see any problems outside of the normal 'once-in-a-while' clipping deal. I had no lagging during play or anything. I found the save system liberal. The settings(from easy to hard) were distinctly different. Easy was very much so. Hard was VERY much so.The graphics were smooth, the play areas were HUGE. The AI was only decent. But, most games fall short of good AI.It installed easily and played well on a moderate system. 900 MHZ ATHLON. 1 GB RAM , 64 MB DDR GEFORCE 4 4200, SOUNDBLASTER AUDIGY GAMER. Don't let anybody turn you away from this one. If you enjoy strategy, and a good shooter combined, this game does a fine job of delivering with less bugs than most high profile games that are released. Note : If you get stuck in a pit and the only way out, which is a ladder, is suddenly gone...get the update patch for the game and that will fix you right up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Still not worth it
This is my edit to the first review. I played other games from Activision thinking maybe it was my system and SOFII ruled. No problems at all with that game so something must be wrong with Revolution. I'm still over-stepping and getting choppy movement. There ARE liberal saves but who wants to play a game that requires you to quicksave after every turn or jump? Borrow it from the guy near you who paid the $$ and judge for yourself...1st review - Every couple seconds the game gets really slow and choppy and you can't control your own movements so you end up walking off a ledge and having to start over again just trying to get across a simple room. I fell in one room that allowed me to climb out once but now the ladder is busted and I had to restart at my last save point. I took off that stupid auto-run and it still runs unless you hold down the walk key. I gave it three days of messing with it, and it still does the same thing. The subtitles don't keep up with the speaking so that's annoying also. It's pretty linear so far. I heard I had to go to my apartment but there's no map or signs to follow so I had no idea if I was even in my own apartment when I got there. needless to say I had no idea what I was suppossed to do when I got there. I will probably chalk this game up there with the pet rock. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars i love it
sure...it is real time, but that is one its assets. Yes, it has a few bugs, the update didnt fix...but ive learned to work around them. They are getting REAL close to the kind of games people only dreamed about in the past. Just be sure to actually quit the game and restart it AFTER a save....this will stop MOST ALL the crashes...even with the slower 1 gig computers. But, if your interested in multiplayer servers and such...forget this one...they really havent got the mp mode straightend out yet. This is a Game for the stategist....It is NOT..for the arcade minded individual.

2-0 out of 5 stars It has potential, but that's all
This could have been a good game, but there are lots of games like that.Don't waste your money, it won't work, unless you have a cray II supercomputer in your basement. It crases constantly, evenif you hit Configure to try to change the specs it crashes, I gave it 2 stars for what works and for the idea.maybe the next one will work, but I wouldn't put money on it.If you have the best computer on the market and the patients and determination of a saint(not to mention a thourough knowledge of programing) go ahead and get the game, but you've been warned.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a repair job
I bought this game about 5 months ago and am a little disapointed with it.It does have nice graphics but it still crashes a lot like the origional BC3000AD.I downloaded one update which upgraded it to 1.7 or 1.07 and it fixed some problems but still crashes. The playability is very slow (an hour in the game actualy takes an hour.)It is supposed to represent real life but I don't know many people who want to spend an acutal months worth of time wasting in front of a computer on one game and with the likelyness of it crashing highly probable so you probably wont even make it that far. There are updates coming out so if you do own it check out the web site to get them and maybe it will improve the performance. It would be nice to have a time acceleration option with an automatic recognition of danger to slow time so the game wouldn't take so long in one player mode.It also needs more video cinematic features since you hardly see any video or automatic displays. However you can look aroud your self if you wish.I like the concept and they are getting closer to the real thing since BC3000AD, but by my opinion they still have a lot of work ahead of them and not enough expirence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Try it for free if you're not sure
You can get a free 30 day key (and a free download, if you don't mind the 2GB download).

I can't provide a pointer here, but if you google for "everquest macintosh free key" you should get our server forums at the top that has the post with instructions. You should get a response in just a couple of days, and get a chance to try the game for free.

There are also forums there, where you can ask questions, talk with people playing, etc.

There are many of us still playing and enjoying the game.If you're tired of Warcraft and want to try a game that's more engaging, if you miss your EverQuest days on PC, or if you have a Mac and are tired of the twinked, overcamped, spawn race, farmed, exploited game that is the PC EQ world.... you should check us out.

We only have up to Planes of Power (original EQ, Kunark, Velious, Luclin and PoP expansions), but arguably that is one of the last solid EverQuest expansions.

Many of the original issues at launch (Hollowshade War script, tier2+ pop not being accessible, spells not being available) have been fixed.

We have a part-time coder, a part-time GM (although she's more absent than we'd like), a guide program (volunteers who run quests/events and answer questions), and a tech support rep who goes above and beyond the call of duty for us.

If you have a Mac, give us a try -- it's free, and we're arguably the best online gaming community you will find anywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Peaks of Online Gaming
Now, let me just start off this review by telling you that this is my experience of the game. I actually play off and on, believe it or not. I think the addictive quality of this game is somewhat overrated. I think some of that pertains to the fact that levels and skills do take a few hours just to evolve and that to do that, you'll be sitting down for quite awhile. However, it's not something I was just anticipating all day and all jazzed up and anxious to play. It's just an interesting experience, really. Something worth spending the time to level up.

Anyway, to speak of the technical specs, the graphics are fairly good for the time period. The new graphics engine in the Luclin expansion brings things up to somewhere between PSOne and PS2, if that's a fair measure of relativity. The music ranges from orchestrated and inspring(mostly in main PC zones like POK) to goofy and in broken MIDI sequences, depnding on what part of a continent you're on.

Speaking of continents, the game world of Norrath is pretty huge. So far consisting of 5 seperate continents and an entire moon to explore(not to mention below its surface) it takes a while to remember routes and tunnels, considering a mapping system doesn't actually exist(though a coordinate system does). For those types of things however, there are lots of sites that have done the mapping out in illustrations for you.

Character creation and development is very VERY vast. With about a dozen races AND seperate classes to choose from, it's fun and challenging to make a good combination that will get you by in the game enough to level up quickly and gain certain skills. Another interesting quality about this is that not all races can be of a certain class, and vice versa. And it never really feels very restricting even knowing that. Finally, the capacity for skills and spells one can learn and develop is nearly endless. Just as race and class restrictions apply, so do spells and skills. It's hard to find any Warrior that would need the Sneak skill, so everything is pretty self-explanatory.

Interaction is a plus too. You are playing with the Macs of the world, right? And unlike one of the previous reviews where people hardly find anyone else on line, contrarily I find alot of people everyday who want to join my group. But that may just be relative to the PC version. Also, you have an option to make your character a roleplaying character, effectively launching her into made-up storylines and forming relationships with other players. The one problem I've had with this is that for one, if you're roleplaying, you rarely get a chance to get experience unless it's part of your storyline. Two,when it finally comes to fighting and grouping, noone can tell what your class or level is because the roleplaying option only allows others to see your name and guild. On the other hand, you could just do it the easy way and roleplay without selecting the roleplay option in the options menu. The point is, you control how you want to experience the game and roleplaying is a fun, creative way to do just that.

And finally a word about the bugs in the game. I'm surprised so many people cut down their review ratings just because of this. I've found the game to be near flawless in its execution. The only bug I've experience constantly is lag, from using too much memory by utilizing the new Luclin character models for some races. You can modify which new models you want to keep and which you dont by race and gender. The more I used, the more lag I received. But that seems logical, seeing as how I'm running just under the game's system requirements anyhow.

Overall, this game is very well made. There's almost endless variety of things to do and a truly endless variety of ways you can shape your experience while playing. Soloing sucks, but when you get to grouping and socializing, you'll have the most fun and get the most experience. However, I'm not as addicted as other people claim. Personally, I don't find it all that riveting to play it for more than 2 or 3 hours. But then again, that's just me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable worth
There are several flaws to Sony's release for the Mac.First, you're only playing against other Mac users. This can be good or bad.You aren't dealing with seasoned players, yet you have to wait if you really want the "community" feel since you're lucky to run into more than a half-dozen players in a sitting.Second, the interface is slightly different than on a PC version, so you'll notice some changes if you have already been addicted to the PC version.Third, Sony has an "on again, off again" policy with regards to whether or not they will continue supporting and upgrading this game.Is it addicting?OH YEAH!Is it fun?Mostly. But it leaves you quaking in your boots wondering about the worth. My wife and I would love to play together, but she's on a Windows computer. We'd even love to play EQII when it comes out, but my main computer is a Mac.Oh well.WARNING:To those detail inclined, this is a HIGHLY addictive game with lots of puzzles (tradeskill recipes being the largest collection of them), skills, and gameplay variation dependent on races and classes, good luck ripping yourself away every evening to get some amount of sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come back!
Sony has Started actual darn support on this game. After the Summit meeting Khama has talked to Smedley and they hope to fix all of the bugs as time goes on. With Sound and Planar Access being the most important. However this will take anywhere from weeks to 4 months because they need to hire people who know something of Macs. Some bugs will be fixed quickly though. and A test server will be attached. The game will be Up to date as far as PoP and will actually be a worthwhile game to play. PIck it up. Join the community at EQmac.com and have some fun!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great game, poor support
The game is excellent. What frustrates us Mac users is the poor support and utter lack of responsiveness from SOE. Even on a dual pumped G5 with a gig of RAM, you cannot long play the game with sound on. SOE acknowledges the problem but after repeated inquiries on the official support board, they refuse to disclose when the problem may be fixed or even confirm that they intend to fix it. They merely state that they are 'aware of the problem.' Considering that they have been aware of the problem for 10 months, many of us despair of ever seeing a fix.

There are scads of complaints from players that petitions to the game manager are never acknowledged and that requests for zone resets and other technical fixes do not receive attention for days or weeks. In the last two months, I have never once seen the Mac GM logged

Higher level players are frustrated that the Planes of Power expansion is only partially implemented. Some PoP quests and flags are not available.

EQ is a great product. It could be THE Mac MMORPG if SOE made a reasonable effort to support it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Melissa Williams is Wrong
Melissa Williams who also wrote a review is wrong. This is probably because she is too young to remember the original for the classic Nintendo. The PDA version is a fairly well done port of the Nintendo version.Everything you remember is there. Yes its hard so was the original and so was almost every other early game for the Nintendo so too bad and get better.Great port of a classic title a must buy if you are nostalgic for games of yesteryear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Amusement for the Kid or Kid at Heart.
All I can tell you is that myself and another adult enjoyed playing this game. I would not necessarily recommend it for small children, more in the ten and up age range (or possibly 8 and up) as you do see some things that might upset small children: There is a fish and a plant that can eat the sea monkeys, plus you can see the sea monkeys curl up and float down to the bottom of the tank dead at the end of their natural life span (6 yrs in their time; about an hour in our time ! But maybe that's cos I kept feeding them the Super Growth food, maybe with just eating algae they live longer ?). Also sometimes they can get sick and when you see one of those even we were like eww !And hurried to get it well. The two illnesses we saw the virtual sea monkeys get(even though we took good care of the tank) were one where their head gets really huge and they flail around, and another where they puff up into a star shape. Both sicknesses also put spots all over them, and they flop around in the water. That might distress a small child.

Anyway, for the older child or the child at heart, this is basically what the game plays like: You choose an empty tank; you get three 'free' eggs to start with. I recommend using the link that is written inside the game case to read the online manual cos our first monkeys died before we learned they have to have a 'home' before they can have babies, (for privacy) and before we knew how to make them 'harvest pearls' from the clams, which you need to get new things for their tank in the game.

After those eggs hatch, if you get them a small home they will disappear inside and come back out quickly with some babies. If the tank is clean and kept with plenty of oxygen bubbles (you can buy a bubble machine and tank cleaner in the game, by 'buy' I mean with game points, not in real life), then they will rapidly become a huge population.Just like real sea monkeys I guess, they reproduce quickly but don't live all that long. Put a snail by a clam and left click on it to make it glow. That will attract the sea monkeys to the clam and they will kick out the pearl. That gives you more 'credit' in the game to 'buy' things.

They can have a karaoke machine, jukebox, beach ball etc. Also you will want to click on the question mark then on each item to see what it does. But they ignore most of the stuff. They did flock around the jukebox and some of them 'sang' on the karaoke but they ignored the dogfish ('best friend ?' not) and beach ball. Luckily you can 'recycle' things you no longer want to get the 'credits' back to buy something else in the game.

There are other fish, some are harmless and some will eat the monkeys so read what they are first ! And there are things to help them be healthy, like growth food, plasma (if they feel ill or tired, which you can tell by watching how they swim), a volcano if they are cold, air bubble machines in 3 kinds, seaweed to keep oxygen in the tank etc.etc. So once you do all that where is the fun ?

Well it's more like being amused or relaxed watching them.WE liked the game simply because it was not stressful or violent. If you liked real sea monkeys you will probably like this game too. It is kind of like having a 'virtual aquarium' without the cleanup and the mess. They do swim, giggle if you 'tickle' them (you are represented by a 'hand' in the game), chatter in nonsense sometimes, dance around, do what look like jumping jacks, things like that. I saw one do some flips in the water. They do enough random things to keep you amused if you are watching them. This is not a competitive type of game, it's one to relax with. If you like games where you take care of things or where you just kind of monkey around (haha) then you will like this one I think. They are cute, and they grow, reproduce, and (eventually) die. They dance around, smile, etc. They start tiny then get big enough for you to see what they are doing.

Oh, and they even are born with names you can see if you hold the mouse pointer over them (which we thought was kind of fun for some reason, especially if it was the name of someone we knew, haha); but you can change those in the 'aqualeash' (a thingy you use to trap them in to cure an illness or rename them; again something explained in the online manual). Most of the things in the game will be easy to figure out how to use but I do recommend reading the manual to make gameplay lots easier. Some things are not easy to figure out, like how to get credits to shop for things in their tank, unless you read the online manual first. The sea monkeys all look the same by the way -- bald if they are a boy and a blond flip hairdo if they are a girl.

Only thing I wish is that it offered a way to install the screensaver later (I didn't but now wish I had) and a way to zoom in on them like you had a magnifying glass in your hand. The real sea monkey tank had something like that. Well anyway I hope this review helped someone. There are more reviews online but I think most of those were not into this type of game to start with.We thought it was cute and relaxing. It was a challenge to try and take care of them then once we figured it out we could just watch them play.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Game
This game is very very interesting.. I had so much fun the first time I played it.. To tell you the truth I still do enjoy playing it. It is so much fun A+++.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay...
If you like sea-monkeys and other aquatic thingys, you might like this. It does not keep you interested very long, though. It was fun when my sea-monkeys were happy and stuff, but othewise it was not very good.
