Amazon.com Review

In the annals of computer adventure gaming, LucasArts' epic The Secret of Monkey Island remains as engrossing today--despite its obviously dated visuals and sound effects--as when it was first released. With its timeless story line and humor, The Secret of Monkey Island shaped adventure games for many years to come.

To the relief of longtime fans, LucasArts finally released the third game in the trilogy: The Curse of Monkey Island. Thankfully, its technical superiority to its predecessors doesn't come at the expense of a delightful and hilarious story line--The Curse of Monkey Island is every bit as good as its prequels.

Players once again assume the role of Guybrush Threepwood, an aspiring pirate who lacks the coordination and muscle tone to succeed as a swashbuckler. After unknowingly slipping a cursed diamond ring on the finger of his longtime love, Elaine Marley, Guybrush finds himself--and the player along with him--again battling wits with the nefarious (and very dead) pirate, LeChuck.

Utilizing a simple point-and-click interface, players guide Guybrush through hundreds of beautifully rendered scenes, meeting unique characters, collecting dozens of objects, and solving puzzles. Interacting with the eccentric inhabitants of LucasArt's comic Caribbean is one of the adventure's highlights; the excellent writing and dialogue make each new encounter even better than the last. The Curse of Monkey Island, with its Saturday-morning-like animated graphics, is suitable for all ages, though the tricky puzzle solutions may be a tad obscure for younger gamers. --Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Delightful story line and excellent dialogue
  • Colorful, animated graphics
  • Simple, easy-to-use interface
  • Suitable for all ages
Cons:
  • Some puzzles might be a bit obscure

4-0 out of 5 stars COTI--A new classic
Another step in the succesful Tower Island series, though this misses
the charm of SOTI and TI2KJR,it is still a classic.Ever since the invention of Guybrush and his Magnon Croboys adventures he has been regarded as a computer-game saint. Now comes the next puzzly Nachitov
Croboys chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great jumping Monkeys! This game still rocks!
The Curse of Monkey Island is the 3rd game in Lucasarts' highly acclaimed graphic adventure series, and finds our hero Guybrush Threepwood tasked with removing a cursed ring that has turned his girlfriend into a gold statue.

My siblings and I dug this game out over the holidays, and (having memorized all the solutions to all the puzzles) went through it in one straight session. This game holds up surprisingly well for being close to a decade old. The graphics look like they were pulled straight from a cartoon, and only the pixelation in the cutscenes will hint at the game's true age. The voice acting is spot-on perfect (Alan Young, voice of Scrooge McDuck, has a hilarious role), with lots of clever dialogue and delivery and occasional references to Star Wars and other Lucasarts games. Puzzles are reasonably challenging without being too obscure, and most gamers should be able to find their way to the end without consulting a walkthrough too much, if at all.

The major strike against this game is that if you're not familiar with the Monkey Island series, a portion of the story and background will leave you scratching your head (such as why Guybrush starts the game floating in a bumper car in the middle of the ocean). The first two installments in the game were DOS-based, and they were old even when Curse of Monkey Island was new. There's actually a huge portion of the game at the end dedicated to sorting out all the various plot threads of the series, and new players might find this a little drawn out. Still, the basic premise of the game is simple enough to follow.

There's no guarantee this game will work on WindowsXP, but I've had no problems running it, so it's worth giving it a shot (a group of fans also developed programs to make the game run smoother, for those having difficulty with it). The Curse of Monkey Island is a classic game in a genre that has been criminally neglected in today's gaming industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars best ever
easily one of the best point and click adventure games. end of story....

5-0 out of 5 stars Monkey Island! A review for the obsessed...
I own all four of the Monkey Island games. Of course, they are all very good, but this remains my favorite. Unless you hate funny, puzzling games with good graphics, pirates and ex-cannibals, this is a game you must play. I have to admit that some problems are hard to solve without the cheat sheets (which you can get at cheatcc.com) but if you use them, use them as a guide the first time. After one or two plays you should be able to go through the whole game with no problems. And it is one of those games you play more than once, you have to. I don't know exactly what it is, but this game is the best , I couldn't reccomend better. Gubrush, LeChuck, Lemonhead, and of course the demonic skull Murray keep you in your seat until your done, and then you want to start all over again. It has a good plot, good graphics, and it's not a hard game to understand just one you have to figure out. For those of you that aren't beginners, but obsessed fans, you should know all this, so my message to you is buy them all if you haven't already and keep being a Monkey Island fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars "YOU FIGHT LIKE A COW!"
Sorry for the title.I figured it was a good attention grabber plus Guybrush says this many a time juring this game...

This is an excellent game! The cartoon graphics are cute, and they work quite well surprisingly. The characters themselves are well drawn and are have very individual, uniquepersonalities.
I love the wit in this game.I found myself laughing out loud sometimes inspite of myself.
This is a very original and clever game, and it is far superior to many I have played.

(P.S. If you like this game, try playing "Escape from Monkey Island"- which isn't quite as good as this one though but still good- and "Grim Fandango" which I highly recommend!). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful endeed but...
Anyone who bought and enjoyed the original CandC: Generals won't go far wrong doing the same again with this expansion. Your money buys you another 15 single player missions all complete with new units, a `challenge' scenario where you can choose a general that suits your style of play and put him up against 8 others as well as the usual skirmish and multiplay modes.

The graphics and sound are excellent, as could be expected from a developer of this pedigree, with the cut scenes giving a truly professional feel to the whole experience. Explosions and animation are superb, I particularly like the way bodies fly through the air as a bunker is blown up, and the screams of anguish as troopers die a painful chemical death never fails to bring a smile (I know, I'm a sick git).

Gameplay is fluid, albeit a little slow in places, while it should also be noted that he who rules the skies, wins (99 times out of 100 anyway). The GLA missions are slightly harder to my mind as there is no air power at all, but more enjoyable due to the downright nastiness of the terrorists. Winning a skirmish against the USA with all the superior weaponry is particularly satisfying and being able to camouflage your units and buildings making them very hard to spot gives an edge that is hard to beat - lets face it, its damn hard to destroy something if you can't see it. Chinese forces are once again numerous and it seems to me that my favourite Overlord is now a tad more vulnerable to rocket toting troops, but the vision of ½ a dozen or so of these beasts lumbering through an enemy base camp, supported by a couple of the most excellent Dragons to clear those troublesome buildings is one I can't get enough of. As always, the USA tend to dominate, and the initial scenario is great for refreshing the memory banks and getting back to grips with all the controls.

The interface is, as usual, totally user friendly and it doesn't take much to get everything quickly set up to your liking. My son was not much impressed by the screen that appears after the loading scenes - unless a key is pressed or the mouse moved, it looks like the program has locked up and he sat there for ages before he realised this (heheheh - kids of today!!)

My only real gripe with this is that, once again, the game doesn't deliver what appears to be promised on the box. I was hoping and praying for the return of the naval units but no such luck - you get a carrier (USA) but can't actually do anything with it apart from launch air missions - most disappointing. Overall though, this certainly ranks as one of the better expansions and does improve the original - if only slightly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Generals Fans.
Once you play Generals with this expansion you'll never play plain ol' gnerals again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extends playlife of Generals to infinity...
...that may be something of an exgaggeration, but this statement isn't: If you loved Generals and haven't played Zero Hour, you have cause for celebration. At the time of this writing, Zero Hour has been out roughly 1.5 years (games live in "dog years" compared to other media), and as far as Real Time Strategy Games go, I put this at, or very near the top of my list, ahead of most every contemporary RTS.

Why?

To many reasons to list, but basically because Zero Hour completely refreshes Generals. If you played Generals like me (a psycho, social-life-debilitating amount), you pretty much had the game down; you knew build order, offense, counters, etc.Zero Hour completely reshuffles the deck by introducing a whole host of brand new units, as well as the ability to play as a General of a certain skill set that gives him advantages (like air/ground/nuclear, etc).

Can you say "C130 Gunship", "Heavy Chinese attack Heli", "Suicide Motorcylist"...when my buddy sent in a huge plane that dropped a bunch of leaflets on my troops to urge them not to fight, I almost came apart with laughter.Good times.

In addition to the General abilities, new maps, and new units, the games graphics have noticably improved.

I couldn't recommend this higher. For RTS fans that haven't checked Zero Hour out yet, don't hesitate to buy this Expansion Pack, this game's got a lot of life in it yet.

Enjoy,

Christian Hunter

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game!
Command and Conquer Generals, Zero Hour

This game is the game of the century. In Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour expansion pack you can be three teams, USA, China and the Global Liberation Army (GLA). Play to build your base and your armies from soldiers, vehicles, tanks, and aircraft. If you have enough money than you are able to buy superweapons like the Particle cannon, Nuclear silo and the SCUD storm. You can also be nine generals who have advantages and disadvantages. You can play missions with a goal or just fight the other team. You can also play other players online in the multiplayer games.

What I don't like about the game is that some times it gets very difficult even if it's on easy. What I like about the game is that the challenges are fun to do and the generals with special abilities are cool. I think that the music is very nice for each team. The game has vehicles from real life like the Padalen tank, Raptor air plane and the SCUD launcher. I would suggest this game to many people and I would give this game a9/10.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chamber Of Fun!
This game is one of the best games I have ever played.

>Every hidden corner can be explored.
>Each spell is very creative.
>The surroundings in the game are very well detailed.
>It is more fun to collect wizard cards in this game than in
any other because the cards unlock many secrets.

From Arigog in the Forbidden Forest to the bascilisk in the Chamber Of Secrets this game is great fun. It is a must play!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game, Great Graphics
I've had trouble finding computer games for my daughter that are age appropriate. Most games labeled "for children" are really for kindergarten & under, and thus too easy & childish."Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets" is just perfect! This is a wonderful game, challenging without being frustrating; great graphics; low on violence; and just plain fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars geting better
This game is better than the first harry potter but don't get me rong I liked the first also.this is another must have for harry potter fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars One great game
This is the best of the 4 Harry Potter games. The graphics are good, the music is good, and the gameplay is great. The spells you learn are really creative. This is the hardest Harry Potter game I've played. However, you have to restart the game to acsoss the Main Menu.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great game for all ages!
Harry Potter and the Chamber Of secrets is a very fun and interesting video game. You start out having to save Ron from the Whomping Willow. On the Whomping Willow there will be a sign that means you may cast Flipendo on it and save Ron. When you arrive at Hogwarts, you're first day you will have a lesson with Proffesor Lockhart on the Third Level. You will have to hit an arrow key on the keyboard as a wand makes its way around it. This is called Rictusempra. It stuns many unusual creatures. It is useful in this game, though. You will then go to the Rictusempra Challenge. When you arrive in a room that has three boxes where you can cast Flipendo on it, look at the doors. On each floor level there will be a picture of Proffesor Lockhart. Cast Flipendo on the blocks until you have the three bottom level doors unlocked. Then unulock the left door and go into it up into the next level and so on. Then when you arrive in the last room You have to hit the creatures into the pit where they belong. Then go up to get the Completion Star, and your time will become your new personal record. What I like to do after I complete the Rictusempra Challenge is go to the Dueling Club and duel other members. After you beat levels, the courts change. Then finish all of the other challenges. When you arrive at the Chamber Of Secrets, I have barely any advice. The only advice I have is that when fighting the Basilisk in the second round, only hit him when his mouth is open. Before you fight the Basilisk, you must gain a lot of health. After you defeat Tom Riddle and the Basilisk, you end up in Dumbledore's office. Go up to the top of his office and look for a Wizard card. Then, when you are finished, do not i mean DO NOT go to the feast. First, you must make sure you have every Silver Wizard card to advance to the Gold Wizard card Challenge. If you do not have every Silver Wizard card, I would duel people and buy cards from sellers. That is all the advice I have. And I recommend to purchase Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. ... Read more

Join Manny, the undead travel agent, and uncover a conspiracy to keep new additions to the underworld from buying a safe passage through purgatory. Grim Fandango combines a unique story line and complicated puzzles to create an adventure different from any you have experienced before. Follow Manny through four years of mystery on his quest for true love and eternal salvation.

The game opens to find Manny in search of the perfect client, one with the means to place them both on the fast track out of purgatory and into eternal paradise. Enter Mercedes Colomar, the client who has it all--beauty, brains, and enough money to buy them each tickets on the exclusive No. 9 train. Following the film-noir formula, Mercedes promptly vanishes, leaving Manny to solve the mystery behind her disappearance and her connection with the Department of Death.

With fantastic graphics--stylishly rendered in the film-noir style--and art from the Mayan, Aztec, and Mexican traditions, Grim Fandango is imaginative and appealing. The challenging puzzles call for attentive play and serious exploration of the Land of the Dead--not an unappealing job when surrounded by such beautiful animation. Include the original story line and humorous characters and you won't want to stop playing--we didn't!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soar like eagles on pogo sticks!
In the vein of Monkey Island and Space Quest, we have Grim Fandango, one of the funniest yet emotionally poignant video games ever released.

Manny Calavera is a Grim Reaper/travel agent who guides the recently deceased to the town of El Marrow to begin their four year journey of the soul in the Land of the Dead.He sells them packages to aid in their journey that vary depending on how well the "clients" has lived their lives. At the top of the line for the most righteous, they can qualify for a ticket on the "Number Nine express", a speedy train that will take them to paradise in four minutes rather than four years. If they've been somewhat less that good, they qualify for little more than a walking stick (though the compass in the handle will surely come in handy!) or being packed in a crate with foam. For reasons unxplained, Manny is forced to work in his dead-end sales job for a certain amount of time before he can even begin his own four year journey. In an act of desperation, he steals a competitors saintly client, Mercedes Colomar, to boost his sales and is shocked to find he can't qualify for anything more than the lowliest packages.Devastated, Mercedes runs away in tears leaving Manny wondering if someone is defrauding the system...

The game that follows is filled with great characters, a wonderful plot that pays homage to classic film noirs like Casablanca, the Maltese Falcon, and the Fat Man, and logical environmental puzzles that make sense to the context of the game.Though the game didn't sell well and we will most likely never see a sequel, own a piece of gaming history that you will treasure and quote with your friends for many years to come.

With bony hands I hold my partner
On soulless feet we cross the floor
The music stops as if to answer
An empty knocking at the door
It seems his skin was sweet as mango
When last I held him to my breast
But now we dance this grim fandango
And will four years until we rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Casablanca With An Art Deco Aztec Twist
Grim Fandango has a very retro feel, sort of like Casablanca with an Art Deco Aztec twist. The game centers around Manny Calavera who is attempting to stay honest and make sense out of a Hispanic day of the dead afterlife which has been corrupted by those who control that afterlife for their own gain. All while Manny pursues the love of his afterlife! Confused? Trust me, it will all make sense once you start playing and the dialog and graphics will impress you and keep you hooked. I've tried a lot of the adventure games and they all have their flaws. But Grim Fandango comes as close to perfect as any game ever will. The controls are a little irritating but not as much as some newer games. This is the best adventure game out there and I strongly recommend that you try it.

2-0 out of 5 stars I Must Be Missing Something
I picked this up in a bargain bin because I had heard great things about Grim Fandango, now an admittedly older title.I had also played a demo of one of the Monkey Island games and found it hilarious.I greedily slapped down my ten bucks and looked forward to some fun.

The game is fun to listen to and watch.Filled with yucks aplenty, Grim Fandango is like participating directly in a wacky animated film. For this alone, Fandango earns high praise. As with the Monkey Island games, the voice acting and humor is top notch.

Sadly, gameplay suffers. If you read through enough reviews here at Amazon, you'll find that people like Fandango simply for its humor and style; most customers admit that they needed walkthroughts to get past the game's frustrating puzzles.I'm a puzzle fan, and I like a challenge, but there were simply too many moments in Fandango where the puzzles felt arbitrary. Logic rarely led to a solution; only trial and error did!For me, this weighed heavily--and I mean heavily--against the game.Humor and style, huge plusses no doubt, should still be secondary to gameplay (or at least equal). With Fandango, gameplay seems to be a less important means towards creative and hilarious ends. You'll need to decide if this is okay with you. For me, it wasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars WARNING!!!
This is one of the greatest PC adventure games ever released. It has a strong mix of puzzles, humor and moving storyline that have made it a classic. While point-and-click fanatics may not like the fact that movement is accomplished by using the arrow keys instead of the mouse, it is well worth your time to familiarize yourself with the controls, as the gameplay is unparalleled adventure game fun.HOWEVER...

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME FROM MOST OF THOSE SELLERS OFFERING "NEW" COPIES HERE AT AMAZON!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oldy but goody
While this is an old game, it is one of the best Star Wars games that I have played. You can fly for either the rebel aliance or the Empire in a variety of craft.

This is one of the better Star Wars games I have played becuase of it's replay value, you can either play online or work for higher medals and rank on your missions. A great game for any Star Wars fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good multiplayer game- NOT single player
This game seems to have been made to address the lack of multiplay in either X-Wing or TIE Fighter. It does a good job of that, and many would argue a too good job. Unless you're an incredibly good pilot, you won't be able to do all the missions solo without turning down the difficulty. No matter which side you choose, the other side will probably win if you're alone. The same goes for the Balance of Power add-on, which contains some very difficult and boring objectives (would you like to identify 50 freighters for us?).

Aside from new texturing, the models are similar to the ones in TIE Fighter. In fact, you will be unpleasantly surprised to see that there are fewer types of ships and stations than in the earlier game. Until you get Balance of Power, the only heavy Rebel fighter is the Y-Wing. This bodes ill for any Rebel fans that want to play missions in which a target must be disabled. I also can't help but notice that the Imperials have the superior TIE Advanced and Assault Gunboat, which seems a bit unbalancing for multiplay purposes.

If you like playing with friends, then you can play this and the expansion cooperatively. That can be a good deal of fun, provided you have a fast and stable connection. If you're looking for a cool story like the ones in X-Wing or TIE Fighter, go get Alliance instead. It's much better for the single play aspect that the older games were so strong in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by a poor effort
I bought X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter hoping it would be like the beloved original X-Wing, with better graphics and more ships.Sadly, the game looked awful, with shifting texture maps on the large ships, presented in a maximum 640x480 resolution. The graphics improved with Balance of Power, but the dim starlight made the battle scenes less than impressive. For a game based on visually stunning movie masterpieces, it was annoying to maneuver around the pitch black underbelly of a star destroyer with no lights on the hull. The huge, never-seen-in-the-movies gun turrets on the star destroyers looked incredibly lame as well.

Even though the sound effects were turned up to maximum volume in the Configuration screen, I still had to turn up my computer's volume ALL the way to hear them.Adjusting the John Williams background music had no effect on its volume, so I had to turn it off. There was no training exercise information on how to handle missiles locked on to the player's ship, which was quite an oversight for a supposedly "fun" product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Wars:X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter
My kids LOVED IT from the moment it arrived in the mail. And speaking of delivery, it was here in 3 days! How's that for customer service. My sons are 14 and 11 and they both like it alot, however my 14 year old plays it the most. They're addicted to the Star Wars adventures whether it be movies, books or computer games. You can't go wrong with this one (and the price is right, too). You feel like you're actually sitting in the cockpit with the pilot. It's definitely a favorite of theirs.Order it, order it, order it!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
this game was great! i like the campaign missions because it feels like the movie, the rebels are always running and the imperials are always chasing. i especially like the way you can destroy tie fighters easily. the taunts are awesome too. it takes a few minutes to get used to the complex cockpit, but it is worth getting used to. this game isnt any ol' shoot em' up game it requires a little strategy too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Gearhead Garage-YESSprint Car-NO
Gearhead Garage is a very addictive game for people who love cars. It's fun customizing the cars. The graphics could use some improvement but you will get used to them. well worth the money
-BUT-
The sprint car game that came with it SUCKED. The graphics and sound are poor and the game is jumpy and slow. TOTALLY OUT OF DATE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, Gearhead Garage is Worth the Price of Admission
If you're looking at this package because you want to play Gearhead Garage, then you're in luck.Gearhead Garage is a nifty little game that's easy enough for a five year old to play and fun enough to hold the attention of those who are only five in their hearts. If you're looking at this package for Sprint Car racing, ditch this title and look for the game Dirt Track Racing: Sprint Cars by Ratbag instead. While you'll miss out on Gearhead Garage, you'll enjoy a real racing game that's actually fun, as opposed to this waste of data that poses as a sprint car game.

Gearhead Garage is a point and click kind of game where you are presented with a virtual car and must disassemble, repair, and reassemble to meet customer demands. The game starts out easy, with a stable of virtual economy cars and clunkers that roll into your garage, as well as animated customers who will offer advice if you get stumped on a job.As you progress, more vehicles become available.Digitalized representations of classic T-Birds and Mustangs as well as beefy Ford Pickups and Broncos are brought to your garage for repair, and you have the option of buying salvageable vehicles at an auction. The goal of the game is simple--to make money--and you can do that by working on customer cars or buying cars at auction, fixing them up to your specifications (almost all have custom options and upgrades), and reselling them.Perhaps the best thing about this game is the availability of custom cars for download, such as '57 Chevys, '70 Dodge Chargers, and even a Santa and sleigh.Since the custom cars are creations of technically adept fans of the game, some work better than others. Many of the custom cars have very high polygon counts that make them look very realistic, but will choke a slower system. At least they're free, and their availability makes this game infinitely more interesting.

Sprint Car Racing, on the other hand, is an almost worthless game with no redeemable qualities. The controls aren't customizable, and the gameplay is about as involved as one of those plastic games they sell at gas stations with a bb inside that you try to navigate into a hole in the back piece.Actually, given a choice, I'd rather play the bb game than the Sprint Car Racing game that comes on this disk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheated
I wanted Gearhead Garage, but did not read the fine print. They supplied me a useless game and obsolete racing game called Sprint car racing. One needs to take extra care or this vendor takes youfor a ride!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game Great Price

5-0 out of 5 stars World War II in a box!!
** Get the most complete Battlefield 1942 Game with add-ons by choosing Battlefield 1942: World War II Anthology. If it is not available then you need to get the three games in this pack - Battlefield: 1942, Battlefield 1942 Expansion: The Road to Rome and Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII Expansion Pack that work out a little more expensive. Battlefield 1942: Deluxe Edition has 1942 original and Road to Rome. So all you need with the Deluxe Edition is to get Secret Weapons. To be honest the steepest it works out at is. The Anthology is $30.00 and is the same price as the Deluxe Edition plus Secret Weapons. Getting all three separately will cost you nearly $40.00 so get the best deal in bundle packs.**

Want to play the best war simulation? Go play the old Operation Flashpoint and pray that the spring 2006 Operation Flashpoint 2 deadline will be met with the best war multiplayer simulator ever conceived. Want to play a single player war game that matched the experience of Medal of Honour: Allied Assault? Then go play Call of Duty and get the expansion pack Call of Duty: United Offensive. Want to the play the best SWAT type tactical one on one? Then go get Half-Life 2 and play Counter-Strike. Fancy a futuristic sci-fi multiplayer with huge maps? Then get the latest Unreal Tournament. So what else is there? Well to be honest Battlefield 1942 is straight up probably one of the best multiplayer games I have played, but be warned, the simulation experience does call for infinite amounts of patients and the game is extremely buggy to install. There is very little good technical support except for what the community offers, updates can be patchy, people end up can't playing it, and it suffers from fatal spawn point easy target syndrome that has rendered many of the maps unplayable... however new maps are updated, but just don't expect the BF1942 community to be as responsive as let's say STEAM. The bottom line here is that even single player mode is not supported. The game comes pretty much as it is served so expect to spend more than a day, maybe a week, to get it to work on your machine with lots of google searches for your problem. The solutions should be found in forums troubleshooting guides. Be prepared for discs that don't appear to like firewalls, anti-virus checkers and other background processes. This is the game of games in terms of installation bugs and crashes. In short - Requires broadband INTERNET.

Single player like we said is not supported. Multiplayer is one big CAPTURE THE FLAG, but what a game of CTF! Problem right away is the lack of classes that looks restrictive but it is actually okay, with five types of soldiers to choose from - sniper, machine gun, rockets, medic, engineer... so it is closer to Team Fortress than Operation Flashpoint that allows full configuration of up to twenty classes. Having said that it does not reduce the impact of the game, but does leave the realm of simulation, deviating into more Unreal Tournament territory where there is very real possibility of just leaving your team behind and going on a frag-a-thon across the map. If you are into that sort of thing then maybe the more recent, but certainly not as good, Battlefield Vietnam, can offer you that type of solo bush mission multiplayer experience like Far Cry with lesser graphics, but if it is Pearl Harbor, Petersburg, German Forests, French Country, Operation Overlord, multiplayer style, where you can pilot lots of vehicles, and use a little team commands, then sir, Battlefield 1942 is really what you should be playing across that 1MB connection you got jacked into that modem.

So limiting by its nature of being a multiplayer only game, with a difficult install, that is quite old'ish by today's standards, still manages to provide the best World War II multiplayer entertainment you have ever seen with Operation Flashpoint beating it for realism and detail as a simulation, but this is the war game that people play online, and it still has quite a large community, meaning plenty of 60 (30/30) servers are still up and running with Battlefield 2 coming out sometime in 2005 (hopefully early) you can still live with getting this just because it offers world war II as you want to play it, on-line. I must say that even though I am an avid CS:S player, this one has stolen it for a bit. Battlefield 1942 really is worth it, after you get it running, and after you have the patients to actually play it like a solider ---- crawl for 2 minutes before sniping 3 enemy over the space of 10 minutes with guys above you on a score of 44... patients is the virtue while playing this if you want to win.... Or if you have the skill, grab a bomber and go drop some bouncers on a spawn building for mass kill. Personally I prefer to play to the sneaking sniper. You know I 0wned u. 

Pros:
- Multiplayer must-have.
- Fairly realistic simulation experience that you will play again and again.
- The only World War II simulation worth playing on-line right now.
- Good game engine. Solid playing.
- Replaces Operation Flashpoint as best on-line war simulation game.
- Really big player numbers of servers.

Cons:
- Harsh reality of enduring install problems and updates.
- Expensive.
- Needs broadband.
- Spawn points have exploit bugs.
- No voice-com.
- Not much of a team communication interface either.
- 2002 graphics... but still nice. Models need work.
- There is a bit of a learning curve.
- Not as vast as Operation Flashpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY WORTH YOUR MONEY!
Blast away at elite german troops or snipe with the new semi-automatic sniper rifle. Either way, this game rocks! Best game in the world. Awesome multiplayer usage. Worth ten dollars completely so get it and play multiplayer at gamespyarcade! I will be there to play you Weston. Yes. This is your friend Bryce.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lag and Bugs too much a hindrance to keep it immersive
Too much choppy gameplay prone to lag and control issues. Icky first person gameplay compared to most any FPS. Great ideas controlling the vehicles ships and planes. Lopsided gameplay that heavily favors pilots.Communication a hindrance without real time mic chat built in and a terribly late typed messages. Sometimes almost impossible with skipping key inputs and garbled messages. Therefore any real strategy on a grand scale against the enemy is laughable. Most kids online just 'rambo' and grab a vehicle or plane and take off on their own agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars cracking game, open play
I'll spare you all the usual blurb about this game and will simply sumarise by saying this:
- it's terrific fun.I mean it - it completely immerses you and makes you feel like you're there
- you can do whatever you want in each of the missions, including sitting back and watching your friends go in and try the attack themselves (and sometimes succeed!)
- the graphics, sound and gameplay are rivetting: you feel scared - as you should in this kind of game

I loved it, finished it and am playing it again.Thoroughly recommended...

Happy shopping

5-0 out of 5 stars Battlefiled 1942 Deluxe Review
I've owned this game now for the past few weeks and feel I am now able to offer a review.I hope some of you find it useful.

Firstly, my comp specs:

Atlon 1.2Ghz
1 Gig Ram
Geforce 4ti 4600 Graphics Board
Win XP
512K Cable Connection

I run the game in 1024 x 728 resolution with all settings set to maximum and it runs smoothly and looks great. It only 'jerked' slightly when I was downloading a 250 mb file at the same time as playing!

The gameplay itself is fantastic. You can fly planes, drive jeeps, tanks even have access to battleships. At first these are hard to master but once you've practiced, and plenty of it, you should quickly become a force to reckoned with.

Most missions are objectively based so you will have to carry these out if you want to continue.Generally you and the enemy have a pool of lives each, which are depleted as you and your team mates get killed. You have to carry out the objectives prior to all your teams lives being used. The missions are historically based and quite accurate from what I hear too.The Road to Rome expansion pack adds to the longevity of the game offering addtional maps and missions and what also adds is the fact that you can play as either the Allies or Axis.

Where this game comes into its' own is in multiplayer mode over the internet. It is fair to say you do really need a hefty connection to get the best form this as there is so much going on.Theres nothing better than sitting in an anti aircraft placement shooting at fellow interneters in their planes as they fly overhead. You can also climb into a vehicle with one of your friends so that one drives and you've got an intelligent mate doing the shooting. On line you could just play it and play it and play it.Couple this with the desert combat mod, which gives you access to jets and helicopters and puts you in the gulf war it really is just superb.

So thats it really, a thoroughly enjoyable game, well executed in my opinion, and just great fun.Buy it and enjoy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did I wait?
I have seen this game out for awhile now. I really dont know why I waited. Well I bought the CH Fighter stick, and USB Throttle controller. This game runs great with them. The graphics in this game kick on anything I have. It runs great too. I also got the Forgotten Battles and Ace expansion pack. I total enjoy playing this game. Very realistic, and sounds great. It now my favorite flight sims, next to Microsoft 2004. Combat or noncombat I am flying. My only regret is why did I wait. UBI Soft did it right on this game. I have other product from UBI Soft but this game is #1. I wont wait so long next time. If you are in to Flight Sims like me dont pass this one up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Game
Damn, this game is incredible.Even if you rev your engine, the plane will rotate a bit from the torque.Try to learn how to recover from stalls on all the different models, then learn to recover the ME-109.It ain't easy but once you recognize how your plane of choice acts when it's about to stall, you can pull aerial maneuvers that really ride the edge of the aircraft's ability.I guess that's where 'flying by the seat of your pants' comes from. This game is just overall unbelievable. It's hard to imagine how people used to actually fly and fight in these things considering the difficulty of just getting up and landing, nevermind combat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its almost real.....
This is a true combat flight sim. If you have the ram and the video card for this game it will feel and look real. This has some fantasic weather too. I have a very fast computer with the top Gforce card and I run it on XP home. It is a great game to play.

3-0 out of 5 stars Error. Error & Error
I installed and reinstalled this program. It takes forever to losd and then fails to load the Humans. Microsoft combat sims are much more reliable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't load it

Amazon.com Review

In the beginning, FASA created a miniatures game that featured humansinthe far future piloting 30-foot giant robot tanks called BattleMechs. The gamewas called BattleTech, and it was good. Then Activision assaulted ourPCswith MechWarrior, a sequel, a handful of add-on packs, andMechWarrior: Mercenaries, and it was great! Then, MicroProse got thecomputer game license and gave us MechWarrior 3, and it was OK--notquitegood, but also not bad at all. Now, Microsoft has bought FASA Interactive andthe BattleTech license. So FASA gives us MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, andfolks, it's awesome.

MechWarrior 4 casts you as Ian Drusari, the nephew of a powerful duke, who returns to his home world from the Clan Wars to find it occupied by arivalnoble family: House Steiner. You must launch a civil war and reclaim yourbirthright as you command a ragtag army of awesomely armed, 40-foot-tall, 80- ton, 90-mile-per-hour BattleMechs across the remote battlefields of yourhostileworld.

Not a bad tale to tell and Microsoft made sure the telling would play as wellasit looks. The graphics are flat-out amazing. Lighting effects, smoke trails, smoldering Mech armor, laser discharges, and missiles all look incredible. Youcan fight in deserts, arctic regions, forests, and even on the moon: all looksci-fi-movie perfect. Mechs have more animations than ever before as well.Theystomp across the battlefield and reel from weapons fire convincingly, and whenthe cannon fire finally punches through their armor, they light up likeChristmas trees. Thermonuclear Christmas trees, that is.

The Mechs are faster than in previous games yet you still feel like you'repiloting a lumbering, walking tank--this is a Mech combat simulator, notQuake III in power armor. The controls have been simplified, but thisisa good thing. It used to take a long time to learn how to pilot 100 tons ofarmored death, but now the controls are much more intuitive. No longer willplayers have to cycle through weapons lists; now, each weapons group iscontrolled by its own button on the joystick. We recommend Microsoft's Sidewinder joystick, as thegame'scontrols were written with that stick in mind.

The enemy Mechs in the single-player game play well. Both your allies and theenemy use their Mechs' capabilities wisely and provide a challenge throughoutthe game's long and entertaining campaign. Multiplayer is offered viaMicrosoft's easy-to-use Gaming Zone and there is also an Instant Action modethat'll keep you playing long after the campaign is over. MechWarriorisback and looming large over the gaming scene. --Bob Andrews

Pros:

  • Immersing techno-feudal storyline
  • Excellent balance between simulation and action
  • Challenging, yet easy to learn.
Cons:
  • High system requirements
  • Sometimes cheesy voice acting

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I've played Mech Warrior 2,3 and now 4. And I would have to say of all of them Mech Warrior 3 was over all the best. In Mech 4 my biggest complaint is that the mech's movement is not all together realistic. They move to fast. In Mech 3 they seemed much more realistic in their movement. They were the lumbering giants that they were supposed to be, not running around like little toys. The missile firings and weapons firing are better in Mech 3 as well, more realistic. I do like Mech 4's Mech Lab as it makes weapons loading more realistic to each mech. I still do enjoy Mech 4 though ,and it is fun to play, but it seems to me that with some small improvements in certain areas, they should have stuck to a good thing with Mech Warrior 3 and just made some more senarios like Pirates Moon.

3-0 out of 5 stars good game, bad balancing
Like all mechwarrior games, this one has too many controls to memorize.Aside from that, the graphics are stunning (the exception being the badly acted movies) the mechs are badass and the overall game pretty good.Unfortunately, most of the enemies in this game seem to require ungodly amounts of damage to take down making it nearly impossible to take on more than two or three enemy mechs before your own chassis is a smoldering ruin.I miss the good old days when a single alpha strike from a 100 ton atlas pretty much busted up anything that moved.

5-0 out of 5 stars this came ROCKS!
walking around, knowing your in a monster robot that can crush a military tank like it's made of plastic, including awesome weapons and graphics, makes this game AWESOME!you can pilot small Mechs, such as the Shadow Cat, which aren't very powerful but are fast, or you can pilot huge, lumbering, powerful Mechs, such as the Atlas and Daishi, with awesome firepower. However, the characters in the main story ARE a little bit annoying. The main character talks like a senseless weirdo."Please.Go ahead.""Yes, of course." Duuhhhhhhhh. Not as annoying is the computer voice that always says, "Target destroyed."You get used to him after awhile.
The weapons totally rock. There's long range missiles, long tom artillery, lasers, LBX's,(which are like a series of shells),gauss rifles, ppc's, (my favorite beam weapons), which are lightning bolts that make your screen all wobbly and shaky when you get hit by them, and lots of others.one of the best primary weapons is when you combine clan machine guns and pulse lasers into one weapon.
some weapons, like the NARC beacon, flare, autocannon, flamer, and short range missile, kind of stink
well, anyway, all this to say........Mech Warrior 4 ROCKS!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Where did all the features go?
Truthfully, I'd rather play Mech 2 than this one.No external views, no screenshot or movie/mission replay feature, HUD display is different than previous Mech games, and music just seemed bereft of imagination. And I have to use the spacebar quite often just to skip the horribly 'campy' dialog and transitions. I mean, there must be too many bad writers for TV that are out of work because of all these even more stupid reality shows - they end up writing this campy dialog for software games just to eat.Graphics and gameplay alone are very good, but I was disappointed to find it is missing a lot of the features that Mech 2 has - and Mech 2 is more than 8 years old...

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!!!!
If you like the Mech games, and want to get one that has the best graphics, best play and awesome mechs..this is the game for you. I run it on Windows XP and it works just fine. So, just because the requirements stop at Win ME, dont pass this up, but do make sure that you have a good graphics card to enjoy them better. Also make sure that your video and sound card drivers are the MOST up to date. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Close to five stars but not quite
First of all, Breakthrough is worth ten bucks even if it is short.Ten Bucks is nothing.I am semi-surprised it went that cheap.Heck, buy it used for 5 bucks.
Anyway, about the game. The graphics, battles, guns, and sound are all very good. And one thing that I really like about it is that the AI is not so annoying. In the first medal of honor the AI would hit you without even aiming.Or they would see you even if you were extremely well hidden. The AI in this is better, and the action is crispier.Anyway, I think that for the price it is a good buy and you will be playing it through more than once.
It's a good game and was definitely better than Spearhead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but consistent
If you liked other MOHAA editions, then this is fairly true to the original format.Being so, it provides little in terms of new dynamics. Some new weapons, and the setting in the African/Italian Theatre add some appeal. Overall, you get what you expect. There are some very frustrating attributes to this expansion: ammo can be scarce, seemingly where it is needed most. A particular part in the game where you're fending off the enemy while your comrade unlocks a door for the longest 30s known to the universe with low ammo provided many hours of cursing, to the point where I just loaded to an earlier point, conserving ammo in anticipation of this part of the game. Thus gameplay can be stilted by unimaginative challenges. As usual, the game AI is poor, compensated by amazing sharpshooting skills of every enemy soldier.Stealth is almost useless in this games as with other MOHAA installments. But, if it wasn't fun on some level, I wouldn't have finished it.Recommend picking up cheap or used if you can. Not worth full price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars This games Multiplayer rocks!
This game is great! When I got the original I was a little dissapointed that the multiplayer wasn't working so I was stuck with the single player:( But after I purchased Breakthrough for some reason the multiplayer work and before I knew it I was slaying everyone! There are some great modes (Objective match) with some great maps too (V2 Rocket Facility, The Hunt). Anyways I want to inform you that this is a great game. So sign up soldier and get ready to be massacred by lt con da man. Thats me :) Hope you fools will try out the multiplayer!

Review On Game:
The game that will blow your mind....

Where do I go? What weapon do I use? These are some of the questions you could answer on the video game, Medal of Honor. This game is a"killer" buy. It has really good speed
(Loading), good graphics, pretty much good everything. If you ever go to buy a video game, I highly recommend this one.

(...)Isn't that such a fabulous cost?So if you really wanted a video game but your mom would not buy it for
You, show her this really, really cheap game and I guarantee
You she will buy it. Other games such as Need For Speed Underground and Enter The Matrix cost about five dollars more.

The special effects and sound effects on this game are awesome! The gunshots fill the air with a loud BANG!
The special effects are really good because the explosions on the game really and truly look real.

This game does not have a good theme for ages 7 and under. That is because it involves killing and stealing. Basically, this is a really good game. I highly, highly recommend this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough to Breakdown
I have been a huge fan of Medal of Honor since I bought Allied Assault and even after Spearhead's shortfalls, but this is just terrible. This expansion pack should have been awesome, yet it failed terribly. The missions have potential, but are horrible. The African campaign where you had to defend the braindead minesweeping tanks was sheer agony. You have to stay ahead of the tanks to protect them, but if you take the time you need to kill the Germans who threaten you and the tanks, you'll likely be run over by the tanks you're protecting. It's very difficult to keep an eye on your tanks, keep moving up and shooting every German all at once. After a few minutes, it gets very tiring.

In the Italian campaign, you fire one round, ALL the Italians will know exactly where you are and you'll be surrounded in seconds.Being shot from every angle (where each shot throws off your aim) while using your Garand can be difficult, especially since there will be no health for you until much later.Later on you will have to fight off hordes of Italian tanks with mortars (as if those mortars could scratch a tank.)You're in a house with a small wall around it, you have to use these cumbersome mortars to destroy these tanks from two different directions, and if one touches the wall, you fail your mission.Even if you destroy it a split second after it touches the wall.Even though the enemy is destroyed, the enemy still has broken through.

One very annoying thing is the lack of ammunition. You have to conserve ammo like mad.About one in every 10 soldiers drops some ammo, if you're lucky. In most situations, I had to fight a group of Germans at close range with nothing more than my sniper rifle and pistol (at least the Italian pistol is decent) only to rewarded with no ammunition. It's very frustrating.

The single player mode ended twice as soon as it should have, and I was left with the feeling of "That's it?"

Like Spearhead, the shortfalls in singleplayer were somewhat made up for with improvements in the multiplayer. However the improvements were nothing spectacular.New modes, weapons and maps were nice, when I could play it.Apparently Breakthrough has a problem where when you try to connect to a multiplayer game, it says your CD key is already in use.Natrually I thought someone was using a pirated copy with my CD key. That is, until I went to their website and found out that's not the case at all.Apparently it's some bug where they screwed up and you have to pay.The explanation on how to fix the problem is of epic proportions (you have to delete the game in a special way and re-install it in a special way) and I just felt cheated. They screwed up so you have to compensate to use the product you paid for.

This is only everything I feel like writing about right now that I can remember (I gave up on this expansion months ago.)Just stick with MOHAA or Spearhead if you already have it.If you really want to try this out, don't spend over $10 for it.

EDIT: Since I wrote this review, I re-installed Breakthrough out of curiosity and the multiplayer works fine this time.I don't know how common the problem I mentioned is. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Gameplay - could have been so good.
This game was one of the biggest dissappointments I've ever had in a game.Dreamcatcher has made some great games, but maybe action games just aren't their forte. This game has terrible controls, you have to use the directional keys for movement and can't use w,a,s,d, so if you are right handed, like most people, it is realy awkward.Every action like opening doors or changing weapons is terrible. If an enemy actually sees you there really isn't much you can do but stand there while they shoot you to death. The voice work was ok, and the look of the game wasn't that bad, but all the other mistakes far outweigh any positives.I have a decent graphics card and it still took me quite a while just to get the game to work.A sad release of what should have been such a great game.I know it looks like fun but really don't bother with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun representation of dune
The characters don't look like any of the people you have seen in the mini series or the original film but the gameplay is easy to learn but very dependant on patience and awareness. Most of all stealth is required, much like in the Metal Gear Solid games you have to suprise your enemies and if you can't then shoot them at range.

If your a dune fan give it a try but if you don't like to work in your games don't, this takes patience and control. Experience gamers only!

rated 4 instead of 5 cause the character work is poorly done

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge dissapointment to Dune fans
Story adaption is awful, gameplay is terrible, and user interface is very frustrating, to put it mildly. It appears they didnt do a lot of testing before releasing this opus barfo to the public.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Game Ever - Less fun than eating you feet
Firstly can I say that I played this game on PS2 for some reason they don't have that version of it here on Amazon.com.Still regardless of the format this game is so astoundingly bad that it still deserves a savaging.Even on a Playstation Controller the controls for this game are still awkward and clumsy. You chop and change camera with a confusing speed, which is especially annoying, when you attempting to sneak up on some one shoot them from a distance.Paul also has an annoying habit of getting stuck to walls when he is being shot.Normally you can walk up to a wall and put your back to it to sneak past guards and staff but you need to actually pull yourself away from a wall in order to respond to a guards attack.

The gameplay is also the complete pants. It skips or fast forwards through large chunks of the Dune story and used so much of the jargon of the books without clear explanation that you would have to be a serious devotee of the books to follow the plot.Hell this is even worse than David Lynch's Dune movie!Important details like the codes you need to open locked doors are hidden in the smallest most hard to see places that you waste literally hours looking for them. Also for a 3rd person shooter / RPG the lack of ammo is an absolute joke. For example in the second level there are seven guards to kill, each guard takes 3 shots to kill provided you are a good shot and you only have 15 bullets!

You are a complete sucker if you buy this game.Trade it now before it ruins your life.If you are even contemplating renting it don't.Read the book (again) or hire the David Lynch movie of the TV mini series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Horrible only begins to describe this game.Putrid tripe put out to make a buck.Could they make the controls more confusing. If I were an octopus, maybe I would have arms enough to control the keyboard, mouse, and (I swear) telepathic controls.Did I mention that the game is horrible. ... Read more

So thats it really, a thoroughly enjoyable game, well executed in my opinion, and just great fun.Buy it and enjoy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultima Online
I've played this game since it's release September 1997 at a friend's house constantly. Then in 2001 I finally got a pc and of course I got Ultima Online. I love it. But of course, I need to be reviewing the newest expansion Age of Shadows :) It comes packed with extras. It contains installation for both 2d and 3d version. I use the 2d version more than the 3d version because I am so use to the 2d graphics of UO that I have been playing for so long. The 3d version is very pretty, though. The only gripe about the 3d version is that the characters look like anime cartoons in the face. The magic effects are beautiful and lush. Some complain that the 3d version runs very slow and is buggy. That's nonsense. I have MSN DIAL-UP v.9 and it works just fine. My connection usually only gets up to 50kb/s which makes the 2d run perfect, and the 3d version run good.

This expansion comes packed with new monsters and a whole new map to explore. Most of the new map is just housing plains, but that's fine, because there are some interesting monsters. It also contains the map Ilshenar which was recently only available on the Third Dawn expansion.

If you havn't joined UO yet and you plan to don't buy this now, but wait for the 7th Anniversary to be released this year (2004). It will contain all of the expansions and some rare items, and a full Ultima game included. More bang for the buck.

The most important aspect of any game is the gameplay. In UO, it's flawless. It's not like Everquest where you just fight to gain level. On UO, you fight to live and thrive in the beautiful world or Britannia. Another great thing about UO is that gaining level is more flexible and realistic. You don't just gain HP, you gain other skills and attributes as well. The currency system is easy to grasp onto.

Countless skills to learn and master, and countless gameplay hours. This is the best MMORPG ever. Probably the best video game ever as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars So you'd like to play UO?
UO is a unique game. Not only can you go on quests, battle, and get a job, but so much more is available. You can create a whole new life for yourself, get a job, buy a house on some remote island, decorate it the way you want. The heart of the game is in the community, though. The graphics *arent* great, and the PvP isnt the most spectacular, but that's not what most players are there for. It's all about friends and relations. It's easy to meet people, and with friends, even the most mundane of quests becomes incredibly fun. If all you want is PvP, this is not the game for you.

Many people are dissatisfied with the OSI shards. They talk of how frustrating the countless bugs are. However, I think they were simply too quick to judge. At first, there *were* tons of bugs, but now, months after the release, there are hardly any. As for lack of space for housing, it is simply a testament to how popular the game is. If you're patient, there is always room for one more house. If playing on OSI shards is what turns you off of the game...there are always *other* possibilities. Look closely, they're there.

UO is an amazing experience, and one I wont forget. It has something that many other games dont, and that is what sets it apart.

1-0 out of 5 stars If there was an option for 0 stars I would of gave it
EA took a once great game and added 1000's of bugs and hacks. Its the worse thing to happend to an online game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Addictive, Immersive, Absorbing MMORPG
Of course Ultima Online (UO) is nothing new to the world of online gaming. In fact, it is probably one of the most succesful MMORPGs (ie, online role playing games with a persistent, massive universe and a large number of other players) in commercial terms. That may seem surprising initially because when compared with some of its competitors like Sony's Everquest or Mythic's Dark Age of Camelot, UO suffers from older generation graphics and visually is not as appealing as these other titles. With this latest edition, the graphics have been somewhat improved, with a 3d version available that essentially makes your character 3d in a 2d world, but even with that UO's graphics lag behind the competition, and graphics are often the first -- and sometimes the only -- thing that a prospective gamer looks at when evaluating a game.

Well, UO is the quintessential case of the danger of judging a book by its cover.Notwithstanding its graphical limitations, UO is quite simply the deepest, most complex, immersive, varied and thoroughly addictive experience that the MMORPG genre has to offer.Unlike many games where you have 6-8 character classes to choose from, perhaps a few more if you are lucky, in UO you have no classes per se, only skills that can be used to develop into professions based on skill levels ... and the list of possible professions you can end up with is long -- 25 plus, including not just the typical warrior and mage professions but a number of interesting ones like merchant, miner, blacksmith, tailor and the like.Your character advances not so much by experience points but by enhancing skills through using them over the course of time. There are so many to choose from, the possibilities for customising your game experience are nearly limitless.

The game is thoroughly engaging, the goals are challenging, advancement is steady but challenging as well and rather time consuming, but the results are very, very satisfying. The world is very social, the players like to communicate with each other, and it is a huge world environment as well. The game world is divided into facets, with the largest environment being divided between the Felucca facet and the Trammel facet, the difference being principally that the former, known as "Fel", allows for player killing, while the latter allows this only under limited circumstances.

The learning curve is steep for UO, but that is part of the fun.The message boards and guides at stratics.com are very helpful in learning the game, and there are numerous approved add-on programs that help make the game experience flow more smoothly. But in the end it is the clever design, the outstanding variety, the combination of challenge and satisfaction that make UO almost unique among MMORPGs, and clearly head and shoulders above others in terms of gameplay and player satisfaction.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete, utter, overrated GARBAGE
I don't get it. I really don't. I expected an intricate, fun, community experience with this game. I was excited throughout the registration process, looking at the box and reading about the handfuls of trades to take up and all of the other wonderful features of the Ultima Online experience.I was pleased to hear about the 30 day free trial.

I made it to day 5.This game is boring.

The trades system is a joke, seeing as how the apparent goal of UO, to most of its gamers, is to make money.Well the truth is only one or two trades really make you any money in this game.PvP combat is restricted to specific areas.I'm sorry, but PvP is a fact of life with online RPG's.Player killers were always all the more incentive to be careful outside city limits, and to hone your combat skills. There is very little to even do in the game. All I ever see is players huddling around the bank, trading items and selling their properties.

Maybe I just don't understand this style of game, but this was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent, and I only spent 10 dollars on it.Really, I want my 10 dollars back. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete waste of money
This is one of the most difficult games to control. Very boring game play.

1-0 out of 5 stars I should've bought Centipede
I've had this game half a day and can already tell I don't like it.It's boring, unoriginal, uninnovative.Pac-Man is set loose from his maze to eat pellets in a hap-hazard course in which he is difficult to control. The graphics are fine, yeah, but the guy is a SPHERE!I expected more out of the course.

There are two ways to play - with the computer or with other humans. Both use the same boring settings and levels.

Waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pac-Tastic!
This game rocks! I was really suprised that a budget title like this could be so much fun and have WICKED graphics.

Its got graphical effects that would put some XBox games to shame. The gameplay is really revolutionary as well with the Pacs now free to move around in brilliantly designed arenas instead of boring mazes.

If that wasn't enough there's a multiplayer LAN game as well which is a real bonus and extremely enjoyable.

With 3 game modes (Story, Adventure and Head to Head), 2 of which can be played over a network this game is excellent value for money. And there's cool stuff to unlock by playing the single player Story mode, including new game modes!! All in a 20 bucks game, excellent!!!

Buy it today, you wont regret it! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Ground Control ignites the stagnant real-time strategygenre with magnificent 3-D visuals, dazzling special effects, andenthralling gameplay. The game eschews typical real-timestrategy conventions by forgoing resource collection completely.Instead, you're provided with a handful of troops--which you cancustom-select before eachsingle-player mission ormultiplayer game--and dropped on maps filled with rolling terrain and tightchokepoints.

Strategic unit placement takes priority over the size of an attackingforce. Placing units on elevations improves accuracy; concealing unitsin shadows make them harder to hit; and flanking heavily armored unitsis vital, since armor is usually weaker in the rear than in thefront.

Dozens of units are available, including different models of armoredpersonnel carriers, infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft. Mostfeature special weapons, such as mortars or grenade launchers, designedto take out specific units or structures. Despite the impressive visualand sound effects, Ground Control's arsenal of units tends toblend together, lacking distinction and personality. This is a minorgripe, though, against a game with such impressive visuals andgameplay.

Ground Control's intuitive control system complements its flashy3-D engine. Players can rotate and tilt the camera at any angle, from abird's-eye viewpoint far above the action to a trooper's-eye view inthe middle of a firefight. Important battle commands, such as unitformations and aggression levels, are seamlessly presented onscreen andare easily available for use.

Robust multiplayer features enable players to test their tactics overthe Internet or local area network against human opponents. Gamers canparticipate in deathmatch, free-for-all, and team play as well asunique games such as flagzones (gain control of particular territories)and--a first for the strategy genre--"drop-in" games where players canenter and leave active games at any time.

Massive Entertainment has created an impressive package. GroundControl's excellent single-player missions, accessible multiplayermodes, and topnotch gameplay make it one of the best strategy games ofthe year. --Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Engaging spin on the real-time strategy genre
  • Breathtaking 3-D accelerated visuals; both terrain and units arecrisp and detailed
  • Intuitive camera system and control interface
  • Eschews resource gathering, a staple of real-time strategy, andemphasizes action and tactics

I no this isnt the place but i cant help it. I ordered this game 4 weeks ago, at first they said they lost it in mail, and ten their out of stock. I order it agin last week and it still sint here, but the demo rocks!

1-0 out of 5 stars F- for Amazon service
I waited 8 weeks for amazon to ship this title, the whole time the web site said 2-3 days - it was never in stock at all. Multiple phone calls multiple email and they still have not updated the web page. amazon gets lowest marks possible.

But good game...

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated, But Awesome
One of the most underrated PC games there is, Ground Control is the fast-paced strategy game that takes out the focus on managing an economy and defending a base and puts emphasis on organized, squad-based warfare.WarCraft III emulates this game, but fails to do so in many respects.GC had WC3's graphics nearly 3 years before it did, boasted a much better camera control system and combat which outweighs anything in any other strategy game I've ever seen.In reality, comparing GC to most other strategy games is to compare apples with oranges, putting GC in a genre of its own.For the gamer who enjoys non-stop, visually impressive strategy with a unique game dynamic of its own, Ground Control is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ground Control: Awesome
I loved the demo. I just had to get the real game, so I ordered it off of AMAZON for "a good price". I was amazed. Alright, so it's the end of the third world war and their are two sides, the Crayven corporation and the Religious order of the "new dawn" (sounds like something out od Delta Force Landwarrior) You start by playing the Crayven people. You step into the shoes, or should I say boots of Major Sarah Parker. You get to read a biography about her in the manual. The Crayvens have "Terradynes" (basically a tank with treads) and "Aerodynes" (planes.) The new dawn people have "Hoverdynes" or hover tanks and Aerodynes. The briefings on my part are not so good however. Even if I have a 1.7 gig computer and 256 mb of RAM, the talking doesn't work. For example, I was listening to a briefing and when Parker spoke I heard "At all costs?, At all costs?, At all costs?, the lines seem to repeat themselves! Anyway, that's just a precaution, the rest of the game rocks. There is no resource gathering or building. You command customizable squads and everything is 3-d. You can zoom and rotate around your units. For 9 bucks, it's a great game! Buy it on AMAZON today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great action and strategy
This game is a great game that does NOT burden the player with the boring and typical resource collecting and technology trees of other games. In each scenario you have a certain number of units at a certain strength; you have some ability to repair damage, but once your men die, they are gone for the scenario, and in campaigns, have to be replaced by less experienced (effective) new units. This game was easy to learn, but hard to get really good at, which is another good point about it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Damn, sounds like a let down
When I saw the back drop story for this game way back when, i litterally shat my pants. Being kind of a history buff and a semi RPG fan i wanted to play this game so badly. Sounds from reading the forums and these reviews that the game was FUBAR'ed like they were actually trying to make it bad. Sounds to me like the creative directors made a bad hand off to the dev team who in turn made a even worse hand off to the coders.

1-0 out of 5 stars No good
I'll play almost any adventure game, but I couldn't stand this one. I got it cheap, but it is too expensive at any price.I played it for a few nights and gave up.People are not kidding about how hard it is to control the game.I ended up clicking in the wrong place accidentally and had to start a whole chapter over. The fighting is too hard and isn't any fun.The dialog is long and boring and you just read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could have been so good...
It's a great concept, and a really beautiful game... someone really spent a lot of time designing and modelling here. It's such a pity that the actual gameplay fails so miserably.

Poor pathfinding and sluggish controls (including your actual mouse cursor, even on a high-end system) plague the game. The interface is also less-than-intuitive, although with a few minutes spent with it you can figure it out quite well.

The control, in theory, is very well done. You can move the camera pretty much anywhere you want around the character, and it all works pretty well. Unfortunately, you still have to deal with the fact that the mouse cursor itself moves sluggishly and skips about, regardless of the graphical settings.

On top of this, the pathfinding is frankly terrible, as I said before. Combat is also quite excellent, in theory, but the execution fails miserably. The idea is that you can strike and dodge in real-time using the movement keys, and for the most part this works. Combat seems very, very painfully slow, though, and the difficulty of doing any targetting with the sluggish mouse makes it easy to be quickly killed because you couldn't click on an opponent that's circling you.

All in all, Mistmare would've been an amazing game if they'd just gotten the controls right. I *want* to play this game through, I really do, but I just can't sit through more than 30 seconds of the control problems. Now, if they release a patch fixing some things, I would absolutely love it.

10 out of 10 for potential, 1 out of 10 for execution. I just can't give the eye-candy points because I can't play the game long enough to see anything compelling.

**quick addition**

After reading the review below (Thanks for the idea), I did some checking up on systems. The high-end system thing is right, but you can go all the way down to an 800 MHz Pentium 3 and it still isn't happy. If things get fixed to a respectable degree, this review will change to a 5 out of 5, rather than the 1/5 it's got now. I just can't rate a game highly if I can't play it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would give it a 5 star rating if the bugs were fixed.
Mistmare is an incredible game. What I mean by that is the story is completely different from any kind of adventure RPG type game I have ever played. This game has the potential to be absolutely incredible except for one thing:It doesn't run worth a darn on High End systems! Can you believe that?Yes, it's true, all you have to do is go to the forums on their site to see the multitudes of complaints about the freeze ups and slow downs on high end systems (2.0 ghz and above mostly)Oh, they have a patch for it, but it doesn't address any of these issues at all.It is a VERY frustrating game to play because of this. The developers of Mistmare have said they are working on the problem, but I am not real sure they are serious about fixing it.Maybe if a few reviews are posted on the internet something will get done.I am going to start an email campaign to complain about this.Anyway, if you have an old system that doesn't provide extreme power, you should be able to play this incredible game... if you have a new high end power system... 5-0 out of 5 stars For those of you who want to read all the DS9 scripts
Only on this CD are all the 176 scripts to all the episodes. There are a few photos and production notes but you don't have to search the web for them anymore. They are all here. Will they ever produce a version for Voyager?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definative Guide to the Series
If you're a fan of Deep Space Nine then don't miss out on adding this incredibly detailed book to your library. The glimpses into the making of the episodes and the characters are fascinating. This is the kind of book you relish over time and it's worth every dime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good database for Trek's "middle child"
I always felt that DS9 suffered from the "Jan Brady/Rodney Dangerfield" syndrome: that is, the show didn't get the respect from the fans that is so richly deserved. While praise was heaped upon "Next Generation" and "Voyager," it just appeared that DS9 was not given its props.

As one of its most stalwart supporters, I strongly recommend this episode guide for its attention to detail.Contrary to the other reviewer, I had no trouble accessing all the information contained on the disc. The information helps me to learn about favorite eps and refresh my memory of all the intricacies involved in the production of this excellent show.

This is one "companion" that I am glad that I "met."

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are a DS9 fan, you must own this rare gem!
The main reason to get this DS9 companion is due to the fact that it has every complete DS9 shooting script on one convenient CD-Rom disc. The core of DS9's success lay in its excellent writing, and creative character development of its principal players: Sisko, Worf, O'Brien, Kira, Jadzia, Odo, Quark, Bashir, Garak, and countless others throughout the series' 7 seasons.

This truly is a diamond in the rough, and a worthy collector's item to diehard Niners out there!

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful reference guide
I found this guide to be very helpful by providing a fully-searchable set of the episode scripts. It sounds like wcaver was using the feature search (which is somewhat less than useful), rather than the full text search(which finds every instance of a word in all of the scripts).

However, itisn't perfect. For one thing, if you click on any word in the script orsynopsis, it does a text search for that word. For someone who is used toclicking in a window to bring the focus there, this is very distracting. For another thing, the guest star information is incomplete; only the"primary" guest stars are listed, and the actors who played minorroles are not listed.

Still, for the price this is a very handy product. ... Read more
