Amazon.com Review Unlike other massively multiplayer online role-playing games (or MMORPG, if youprefer), Asheron's Call takes a more holistic approach to game design. In the arena of character generation, rather than simply choosing a characterclass such as warrior or wizard, characters are designed based on the spendingof skill points. If you want to play as a wizard that also dabbles in swordplay,Asheron's Call lets you make that decision. And unlike other MMORPGsavailable today, Asheron's Call offers a seamless world that avoids thelengthy halts whenever an entire new area is downloaded to the player's localcomputer. The game achieves this by performing constant smaller downloads behindthe scenes. The only noticeable load times occur when you actually delve into adungeon. These and other innovations--such as an intriguing combat system that involveschoosing specific hit locations (which vary from opponent to opponent), amulticomponent spell fabrication system, and extensive character appearancepossibilities numbering in the hundreds--make Asheron's Call an enjoyableand new experience for all. One specific innovation merits special mention--the practice of allegiances. AnyMMOPRG will be a bit confusing to new players upon their arrival, regardless ofwhether they have played games of this genre or not. Usually, with politepersistence, new players can discover what they need to know from the moreexperienced players. Asheron's Call has taken this fact of virtual lifeand incorporated it into the game through allegiances. An established characterwill offer to become a "patron" of another, resulting in a formal relationshipin which the elder gives assistance, and perhaps some equipment, while the"vassal" is obligated to perform certain services. The vassal can in turn becomea patron down the road, thus bringing a full feudal flavor to the game. Depending on the number of vassals a patron has, he or she can even gain titleand access to equipment he or she could not have had otherwise. This means amultitude of players will look to assist new arrivals, and, as either side canend the allegiance, be responsible to uphold their ends of the bargain. Oddly, unlike in other MMORPGs, your sword and sorcery alter ego on Dereth mustbe human (though you may select from three different ethnicities). For thosewishing to play elves or ogres, other games of this genre are better suited.Again we see this lack of diversity in character roles. While you can spendcharacter points to increase skills typical for rogues, warriors, priests, orwizards, these are the limit of your choices. Those who wish to assume the roleof other fantasy staples, such as that of a necromancer or bard, need to lookelsewhere. But for those who prefer in-depth detail over archetypal breadth, or for thosewho don't care and just like the idea of adventuring in a world with thousandsof other online colleagues, Asheron's Call is a call worth answering.--Brus Wasson Reviews (96)

Amazon.com Review Players are able to customize their high-tech warrior to suit individual play styles: snipers will go with light armor, extra battery pack, and a laser rifle; fans of less-subtle tactics will grab heavy armor, a mortar, plasma gun, and shield pack to create a walking tank. This level of customization adds an unusual amount of depth for a game in the first-person shooter genre, and it's fun to mix up gear choices in order to react to battlefield conditions. And oh, what a beautiful battlefield it is. Players begin the game within their home base, but once free of those crowded halls, a limitless vista greets the eyes. Rolling hills, snow-covered peaks, and eerie moonscapes provide a stunning backdrop to the action as players zoom around with jetpacks. Outposts, towers, and weapon emplacements provide strategic objectives and sniping platforms; hovercraft and personnel carriers allow quick transport and airborne assaults. Blasting your way across the world of Tribes is fun, but it's not the only gameplay option. Less action-oriented gamers can assume the role of Commander and issue orders to teammates. The Commander is especially useful during matches that require intricate teamwork, such as capture the flag, capture and hold, and defend and destroy. --Mike Fehlauer Pros: Reviews (49)

The game's graphics are not wonderful, but aren't the worst I have seen, but you rarely take time to notice as you are normally involved in some good combat, the hud is customizable to a degree, unlike some other space sims. The weapons are unique but the missles are pretty much left to be used on capital ships only later in the game. As you progress later in the game it becomes an all out fragfest and a series of "protect the" missions that can become rather hard and irritating if you paly them for the first time. I do tohugh, still recomend this game to anyone, too bad Interplay went out of business so the only way to get it is used.....but its still a good game to have...
It's better than X-Wing, better than even the original Wing Commander (and that's saying something). This game features tons of cool missions which actually change objectives mid-mission (and sometimes are intentionally impossible to accomplish), all in the name of wondrous storytelling. The graphics are marvelous, even by today's standards, with perfect glowing particle explosions and neat shield-hit and hyperspace jump effects. The sounds are sweet (full of crunchy explosions and searing laser-fire), and the cut-scenes rank among the best ever seen in a pc game (the beginning and ending cinemas are two of my favorite ever, and who can forget the phrase "We hurled outselves into the void with no fear"?). What really makes this game shine though is the perfect controls and the awesome computer-controlled A.I. The controls are super-intuitive(featuring the best keyboard layout I've ever seen in a space-combat sim), and allow you to tell your wingmen EXACTLY what you want them to do. This wouldn't be particularly cool, except that your wingmen actually are smart, and will always try to carry out your orders. And the enemy ships aren't exactly idiots either (resulting in that one bogey leading you away from your objectives instead of endless waves mindless enemies like you see so often nowadays). After many years of space combat (and considering the fact that I still keep a copy on my hard drive after all these years), I have come to the conclusion that this is the best space-combat game ever. I like it ever more than it's sequel (which DID feature better graphics but not a better storyline). A definite must-have on ANY PC gamer's list.

Amazon.com Review Half-Life quietly debuted in late 1998, and the gaming community was forever changed. Instantly soaring to bestseller status, the groundbreaking title eventually earned over 50 Game of the Year awards. The combination of an intriguing, well-paced plot, smooth graphics, cunning enemy AI (artificial intelligence), brilliant level design, and revolutionary in-game scripted events make Half-Life an unforgettable gaming experience. You play as Gordon Freeman, a mild-mannered scientist assigned to handle hazardous materials in the government-funded Black Mesa Research Facility. Something goes wrong--horribly wrong--with one of the more exotic experiments, and Gordon must try to escape. Along the way, he has to try to rescue his fellow scientists, master the use of conventional and not-so-conventional weapons, avoid or kill bizarre alien monstrosities, and learn the true nature of the research at Black Mesa. Team Fortress Classic is a multiplayer-only action game that uses the Half-Life game engine and interface. Ease of use and pulse-pounding game play have made TFC one of the most popular action games on the Net. Finding and connecting to games is a quick and painless process; once connected, any gamer will quickly feel at home. Players choose a character class from such World War II movie favorites as Scout, Pyro, Soldier, Engineer, Medic, Spy, Sniper, or Heavy Weapons Guy. The class determines your health, armor, speed, available weapons, and special ability. Special abilities range from the Medic's ability to heal comrades and poison foes to the Spy's ability to assume the guise of any other class. It's the teamwork that makes TFC so much fun. Each player is a member of a team and must work with the other team members to accomplish the goals, of capturing the flag, base defense, or planning to kill the enemy VIP. An effective team includes a good mix of character classes and a leader of the team's efforts. The person in charge might assign a sniper to cover a large expanse of open ground or tell a team to take out an enemy bunker. The maps included with TFC emphasize team-based play, and the surprisingly productive Half-Life/TFC player community constantly produces new maps and modifications. Opposing Force returns the player to the Black Mesa facility, but tells the tale from the perspective of Col. Adrian Shephard, one of the soldiers sent to clean up the scientists and their reality-altering mess. Just as in Half-Life, things quickly go badly for Colonel Shephard and his men. Ambushed by aliens, scattered and confused, Adrian must fight his way through the ruins of the facility in an attempt to reach a helicopter extraction point. Gameplay is similar to that of Half-Life: Adrian must collect weapons; get over, around, or through collapsed passages; fight aliens; and contend with the mysterious--and murderous--Black Ops agents. All three games in Half-Life: Adrenaline Pack could easily stand alone on their own merits; being able to get them all in one package is a real treat. Half-Life will draw you in, Team Fortress Classic will keep you in multiplayer heaven for months, and Opposing Force will remind you just what makes the Half-Life game world so good. --Mike Fehlauer Reviews (21)
Any way.Half Life has a great story. You are Gordon Freeman, a scientist for the Black Mesa research facility.Then.It all goes wrong.Aliens are everywhere. If thats not enough, there are government grunt troopers coming in also. You think they are here to save you. They are not. Now for Opposing Force. You are the grunt. You have crash landed at the black mesa facility after you chopper was shot down by an unknown .....craft.What the hell is going on?You must find your way past alien life forms so you can get out of this hell hole.At the same time your mission is to find Gordon Freeman. There are so many mods for this game its unbeleivable. This game is a MUST BUY.If you don't own it, well......I dont know what to say.Multiplayer rocks, single player rocks, everything rocks.

P.S.:I bet you nobody will be playing on Soldier of Fortune Multiplayer!
Shoot a guy in the foot, and watch him dance around on one-leg; take out a leg, and watch him squirm on the floor; deliver a slug in the gut and listen to your victim moan in pain and even beg for mercy; if you're really serious about this thing, go for the head shot and watch it explode like a watermelon. That's the main attraction of SOF.I can perfectly understand why some parents would not want to let their youngsters see such gratuitous yet oh so cool violence, and there is a parental control lock that will take the realism out of the game. Soldier of Fortune is much more than an excuse to revel in gratuitous violence. The game play is excellent, rivaling that of the Quake series and Half-Life.The fact that you must complete specific missions makes it much more cerebral than many a first-person shooter, yet the game is not so difficult that you find yourself getting hopelessly stuck every five minutes.Sure, there could be more variety among enemy actions, and strategy sometimes equates to little more than just blasting away willy-nilly at the bad guys, but Soldier of Fortune really has everything I want in a first-person shooter. The addition of "friendlies" adds a further little challenge to the game; as much fun as it is to blow away innocent, unarmed civilians, too many collateral damage deaths can make your mission a failure.Your weapons and equipment are the types of things a real soldier of fortune would carry, not some crazy science fiction gizmos.Your missions, while fictitious, are taken out of the pages of current world history, giving you the chance to take out vicious terrorists who represent a clear and present danger to basically the whole world. This is as close to becoming a hero as I will ever get (even though being a soldier of fortune is as much about making money as it is about taking out the world's bad guys). The Platinum Edition includes all of the extra multiplayer features of the Gold Edition along with five brand new multiplayer maps, a video preview of SOF2, and the complete online version of the official Strategy Guide from Brady Games. The game has a little age on it now, but it's still a heck of a lot of fun to play.I would only ask that you make your own decision to play this very realistic game or, if you are a parent, you make the decision as to whether or not your child or teenager should take on these violent missions; don't let "them" tell you what you and yours can handle. ... In single player, you can travel to different star systems and travel through tachyon gates to get to different sectors.Go on missions to gain credits and further the plot, then spend the credits on a more powerful ship, better weapons, and useful systems. You can join one of two factions, Bora colonists, or Galspan mining corporation, and fight against your enemies and for what your faction thinks is right. In multiplayer, you can fight in one of two ways: arena match, in which you go up against as many as 31 other players and try to kill as many of them as often as possible without dying too mudch, or base wars, in which you climb the technology tree on your base to get better weapons and destroy the enemies base. Both have excellent real-time graphics and you experience no lag. The graphics on this game are stellar, with amazing ship, weapon, planet, starbase, and asteroid portrayals as you zoom around the galaxy. The AI is well developed and ranges from being relatively easy at the beginning, to incredibly hard and challenging near the end. All in all, this is a great game, and I hope to see you on multiplayer.

Amazon.com Review Novalogic's decision to reuse their "Voxel Space" engine from the original Delta Force probably won't please gamers hoping for something akin to the Unreal engine. While the Voxel Space engine renders landscapes and patches of grass beautifully, trying to locate items and enemy soldiers from a distance becomes quite difficult; it's simply hard to distinguish long-range enemy voxels (the pixels that comprise Novalogic's 3-D engine) from standard environmental objects. Furthermore, heed Novalogic's warnings and don't attempt to run Delta Force 2 unless you meet or, better yet, exceed the system requirements. Despite some performance problems, Delta Force 2 includes both a robust and enjoyable single-player experience as well as plenty of Internet and LAN multiplayer options. More than twenty real-world weapons and equipment are included; missions require the use of everything from the M40A1 sniper rifle and APS underwater assault rifle to light anti-tank weapons and camouflage suits. --Doug Radcliffe Reviews (67)
The 2nd game which totally kicks butt and gets you your money's worth is the multplayer part.Anyone who is a fan of Red Faction or Halflife will love this game. On-line it is a total slaughter-fest even though the community has shrank n recent years as people have gone on to either the DF sequals or something else simply to combat the rise in cheating. The other versions of the game did a much better of keeping the cheaters out. Overall-Still all in all I just love this game
DF1 was a software-rendered game.It didn't rely on OpenGL (hardware) and other stuff like that.DF2, on the other hand, is the first OpenGL game in the series. It seems very dark and kind of slow.Maybe it works better on some video cards, but it didn't work that well on my TNT2. I'd recommend getting Land Warrior (DF3), which also has hardware support, but none of the issue of DF2.Or, get one of the newer ones in the series. As of the time of this writing, Black Hawk Down (DF5) is what I'm currently playing (and the newest in the series).

Amazon.com Product Description There's also the kind of stuff you'd expect from an expansion pack. The chain gun and nail gun are both back (you gotta love the classics), as well as a proximity grenade launcher. There are several new capture-the-flag and deathmatch maps, and now teams can design their own skins and logos as well as choose from different character heads. Reviews (17)
Now to add to the carnage of the original release there is the Team Arena Mission Pack. Packed full of levels to play Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, or the new Obelisk and Harvester modes. The additions to your arsenal are also handy, some of which you may recognize from old encounters. Overall the game play is good, though I'm a little annoyed you can't seem to use all of the old skins from the original. I'm assuming you have to move them over to a different directory or something. The targeting is fairly smooth, though I don't find it as easy to control as Unreal Tournament. Probably just a preference of mine. I find it's easier to be more accurate in UT then in Q3TA. So enjoy the vast amount of new levels. Have friends over so you can whoop them. Then again, I actually prefer to team up with friends to whoop somebody else. You never know who'll win the next match. Game On! ...

What sets this game a part from other shooters is the one sniper mission where you have to protect a mechanic from a sniper vantage point. Or the two mini-base building mission, where you protect others by building a force field and gun turrets. Else, you just hunt for the switch or find the Artifact, and even this is fairly straight forward. And the weapons are very imaginative. (Later on in the game...) To sum it up: AI is great. Graphics are great. Sound is great. The story is good. Characters are good. And the missions are average. Length of the game is short. And the difficulty is adjustable from very easy to insane.
Single Player 7.5/10 (Just not up to par with rest of game, show a lot of potential but only uses some of it.) The final phase of the peace initiative is only hours away when renegade troops, led by Captain Zod, shoot down an enemy cargo ship in the demilitarized zone. What follows is a stunning blend of arcade and strategy elements as the player is dropped into the heat of battle. When you take control of your Steel Soldiers unit, you'd better hit the ground running! Z: Steel Soldiers features 30 distinct levels spanning six unique worlds, from lush forests to arid deserts; 30 military units comprised of land-, air-, and sea-based transport, most of which are armed to the teeth; and 20 additional multiplayer maps. Revision: This game is a little buggy without the patch.Be sure to download and install it before playing.
this *could* have been a great game.I was in the process of playing, and was definitely enjoying it, and had reached level 14 or so (out of 30) without too many problems. There came a time when it started crashing every time at the exact same moment.I said, OK, there must be a patch for this, so I got online and started looking around and found patches that claimed to fix 'random crashing'.So, I was on the Z site and tried to download the patches and without fail every time I tried to download one, the page could not be found.Looking elsewhere, I found complaints that this was common (the official site's servers kept crashing) and that many people were unable to find the patches or they flat out didn't work.Guess what?I installed the patches and mine doesn't work either! They tell you to 'be careful' where you install the patches, so I followed the instructions that they gave, and installed them to the root directory, and lo and behold, I can no longer run Direct X.So now, I can't even get to the program at all. This is especially frustrating because I had finally managed to get to a superior position against the damn blue enemy on the level I was on and now have lost it.I even tried reinstalling to no avail. So, my advice to all of you guys is to wait until the Bitmap Brothers get their act together and make some fixes that actually work - investigate this and you'll find loads of complaints.I have no idea how the other people giving reviews here managed to finish, but i read on one of the complaints that this guy had P4 1.2 GHz processor and still couldn't get it to finish.I personally have a P3 500 MHz and decent video and sound card and couldn't finish.I tell you, when I hear people complaining about specs, I usually assume that they're not computer literate or don't have a powerful enough system - well, I'm a programmer and have played games since the Apple II first came out and I have no idea how to get this game to work. It's too bad because I seriously enjoyed it up until the point where I could no longer play. So, this game could have been good, but due to the bugs, it isn't.Hopefully they will provide a fix.In that event, I will come back here and change my rating to a more favorable one.Until then .... buy something good like Deus Ex or System Shock or something.
