Amazon.com Review

It's been nearly 10 years since Wolfenstein 3D foreverpopularized the first-person shooter, and at long last everyone's favorite Nazikiller, B.J. Blazkowicz, is back in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Setduring World War II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein finds the Nazisdabbling in the black arts in an effort to create an army of supersoldiers.Naturally, Blazkowicz is the only thing standing in the Nazis' way, so he's setbehind enemy lines in an effort to end the madness.

On the surface, the single-player game seems like pure gold--after all, everyoneloves killing Nazis. But the story jumps all over the place, the enemy AI isless than impressive, and most gamers will be able to finish the game in a mere10 to 15 hours. The single-player game falls short of the standards set bytitles such as Half-Life and No One Lives Forever.

In fact, the best thing about Return to Castle Wolfenstein is itsteam-based multiplayer mode. Each multiplayer adventure features Axis vs. Allies, andboth sides offer four character classes: engineer (removes obstacles), medic(heals and revives teammates), lieutenant (calls in air strikes and replenishesammo), and soldier (only class able to use sniper rifles, flamethrowers, andother unusual weapons). The game includes only eight multiplayer maps, but theyare all perfectly designed, and in order to be successful teams have to worktogether. The result is a great gaming experience that fans ofCounter-Strike or the Day of Defeat mode for Half-Life will reallyappreciate.

Graphically, Return to Castle Wolfenstein looks amazing. It uses thepowerful Quake III engine to great effect, and the character models, explosions, and lighting effects are all perfectly done. Alas, pretty graphicsand a great multiplayer game don't quite make up for an exceptionally averagesingle-player experience. --William Harms

Pros:

  • Amazing graphics
  • Great level design (including secret passages)
  • Awesome multiplayer mode
Cons:
  • Lackluster AI
  • Single-player game is very short

4-0 out of 5 stars Guilt-free genocide
I suppose if there are two groups whom it's acceptable and almost encouraged to slaughter, it would be Nazis and zombies. It's the only time a defendant could be on the witness stand and confess to his own benefit "Your Honor, they were really asking for it." Which is what makes Return to Wolfenstein so much fun. It's a historically accurate gothic WWII supernatural FPS. One of those rare combinations you throw in a blender and it comes out all yummy.

I'll briefly echo all the other compliments here: nearly photo-realistic graphics; pinpoint control, targeting, and collision detection; silky smooth operation in XP. Voice acting is believable. Weapon and explosion sounds are appropriately metallic and jarring. And the undead are scary as hell. I've played many of the good survival horror franchises, and none except Silent Hill 1 freaked me out like the zombies in Wolfenstein. It was a rare stroke of genius to introduce the Nazi grunts as sympathic victims of the undead hordes, showing scenes of your enemy's enemies devouring them alive. This creates a real hesitation and apprehension about the player's role that exacerbates the fear. In other words: me scared, good job.

So, if it rocks so hard, why not five stars? Well, this little revelation hit me about halfway through the game: instead of being the best Castle Wolfenstein it could be, id decided to make a very good cross between Medal of Honor and Wolfenstein. Which is a very good thing, but remember what set the first Wolfensteins apart from the rest were the exploration and "secret area" goodies. RtW would have been great if every level had been more like Paderborn (the best stage of RtW): more dungeon crawling, deeper and more inventive secret areas. I'm imagining innovative and useable secret goodies that enhanced gameplay, hidden by new concepts of concealing secret doors. You know, play to your strengths rather than copy someone else.

As it is, Return to Wolfenstein is a fun, pretty, and often scary offbeat shooter that's just a hair below the best of the more traditional WWII FPS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compatibility problems
I have this game, it used to play on my win 98 but since I upgraded to win xp it doesnt work anymore. Does anyone know why? How can I fix it? I doesnt help changing the compatibility settings.
Thanx a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Milestone in Gaming?
As most of you are aware, the video and PC gaming industry loves to hype games. In the last six years or so the games that got a LOT of attention prior to release include Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal 2, Black and White, and of course, Doom 3.As you can see from this list, not all of these games lived up to expectations.Considering the tremendous amount of hype that heralded the return of Wolfenstein, does Return to Castle Wolfenstein live up to expectations?

Mostly yes.The graphics in this game are definitely good, and they seem to approach photo-realism in some ways.It helps to run this game with a good video card, and I can tell you that although Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released in 2001, my Radeon 9800 graphics card still strains a bit if I turn all the settings up.The sound, level design, weapons, and enemy AI all are very good too.

Nevertheless, most gamers would agree that this shooter was not the milestone it was expected to be.Some complained that the single-player adventure is mediocre, but I thought it was quite good.I guess there's only so much you can do with a first-person action game, and if the previews in the PC gaming press get too exciting, one should expect a let down.

So should you buy Return to Castle Wolfenstein? If you like playing action games on your PC, then by all means get a copy.At the price, you'll get a really good value because this game is as good or better than many of the newer, more expensive shooters. Moreover, playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein can lend you an idea of how games evolve and how gamers react to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply awesome...a classic
I've beaten Medal of Honor, Soldier of Fortune, Half-life, Opposing force, to name a few, and RTCW is my favorite. It is better than Medal of Honor hands down in my opinion, because the atmosphere, weapons, excellent enemies, and the immersive gameplay are just so much better. The flamethrower alone puts all other flamethrowers in other games to shame. The enemies are downright scary.I dont remember being so immersed in a game since Thief or System Shock II.Nazis and the occult, what more could u ask for? mwahahaha

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best WWII first-person shooters ever
The first time I came in contact with RTCW was when some friends of mine and I played the Beach multiplayer demo at a LAN gathering.Basically, everyone who played it went through a religious realization of how great the multiplayer experience was, and we all looked forward to the official release.

I was certainly not let down at all.Although the Beach was still by far the best multiplayer map in the game (and easily one of the best multiplayer maps of all time), the others were still excellent. The ways in which all the various classes of players could collaborate made the game team-orientated in a very original way.Although the engineer was the only completely necessary class in most cases to win a match, having an even distribution of players using all the classes made for a much easier time in achieving the objectives. For instance on the beach map, the Allies needed to retrieve some documents inside Castle Wolfenstein. In order to get inside the castle, engineers were required to plant dynamite and blow the castle walls (Axis engineers could diffuse the dynamite).Medics keep the engineers and other players alive to carry out the task, lieutenants feed everyone ammunition and throw airstrikes to eliminate the opposing threats, and soldiers employ a panzerfaust, mauser sniper rifle, venom (handheld gattling gun), or flamethrower to provide additional protection.Though RTCW was not the first game to invent player classes, it employed these classes in new ways that provided for fantastic gameplay.

Also, the single-player campaign was excellent and I still consider it one of the best of all the games I've ever played.I thought the storyline was pretty cool, and enjoyed how the writers weaved together fact and fiction concerning WWII and Himmler's work in the paranormal. The main character is BJ Blazkowicz, a captured US soldier who escapes from Castle Wolfenstein and encounters both Nazi enemies and undead demons in an effort to thwart the Germans and win the war for the Allies. In addition to the weapons listed in the multiplayer description, the game also features such weapons as the Thompson, MP40, Colt, Lugar, pinapple grenades, and potato mashers. My favorite single-player experience is a level later on in the game when Blazkowicz is required to sneak throughout a German village and eliminate eight important generals. The village is armed with an alarm system and if an enemy spots him, they can pull the alarm and the level resets.Basically, the level requires a player to use only a knife or a silenced weapon and contributes to the invention of the Covert Ops class in the sequel to RTCW, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which is another game I very highly recommend (also, the game is free). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars False Advertisement
All,

My son recently purchased The Sims Collection. I was with him when he placed the order so that I could handle the CC info.

This game clearly states in the ad that it will work with Windows 98/me/XP. NOT TRUE.

We received the game and upon installation,The Sims and Theme Park lock up his system (he has XP). I went on line and found that others have had the same problem.

I emailed Amazon to see if they will accept a return although their policy on software indicates they will not.

This is nonsense. Not everyone is a "techie" or a full time "gamer", You rely on the information provided by the COMPANY YOU ARE BUYING FROM.

Beware of one sided deals. With Amazon, they will suck you in with low proces..but then,...You buy it, you own it. If it doesn't work, tell your kids to deal with it and buy them another from someone that can accurately describe the products they sell and know the difference between 98/ME and XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
This pack sounds really good to me. It contains many good games in it. Anyone who is interested in at least one of the games, should buy this anyway!! I play "The sims" (one of the games included in the pack) and its wonderfull!A point I should mention - Sim City and Sim Theam ParkDONT WORk on XP!! (and as you notice, its half of the pack). Even if i cant use two of the games, I would still buy it. The Sims is A GREAT GAME!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! especially the sims online!
I just got this and i was esspecially ecited to try The Sims Online. So i did, i tried the game and it is so cool! Ive met so many people and i am having a blast! The other games are ok, but The Sims Online is deffinatly my favorite. Even though you have to pay 10$ a month, i think once you try it you will realize it is very well worth it!

3-0 out of 5 stars About the games in this pack.
Originally written 11-22-2003:I'm a huge fan of the sims and recommened that people should try playing it, however there are seven expansions for this game that have been released and now you can't find the second two expansions alone because Maxis has bundled the original and the first two expansions together for something like $50.If you want the sims I suggest you do that, though in the near future they will probably combine more expansions together. That and The Sime 2 is set to be released in the early Spring of 2004, with much better graphics and an overall updated appearance and better gameplay, no more Sims 1 expansions will be realeased as they are going to start expanding Sims 2 eventually.

As for the Sims online, I never got into that, even though I'm a huge sims fan.The reason being that you pay the money for the game and get, at the time of realease, a free two months to play online. But, after this time you have to pay like $10 a month to use it, since you have to play online and you have to pay to do so.

I have Sim Themepark and played it for a couple of months, it was actually quite fun, the graphics could have been better, but all in all it was decent, but once you play all the way through and buy everything it loses its luster and gets old pretty fast.

I haven't played this version of SimCity, but have played other versions.I always got a kick out of playing it but once again it gets old pretty fast.A lot of the time after you've played it for a while, I at least, started making disasters happen just for some excitement.Again, I haven't played this version and the newest version (not this one) looks really great, with better graphics and all, even expansions to the game.

Overall, I'd say that if you know that you really want SimCity or Sim Theme Park and you are inserested in seeing what the sims is and not wanting to really expand it that much and you don't want to just wait for the Sims 2 release then by all means get this.Don't buy it for Sims Online unless you are willing to pay the money every month for the ability to play it.

Overall I think for $40 this ain't that bad, the games are on the old side now but are generally still fun, excluding Sims Online (though I've heard that's all in what you make of it, but you still have to pay to play).

Since you can get the updated versions of these game now for like this price my final word is that if you are getting this because you like one of the games then forego getting this and get the better newer version of that game. But if you want to try them out then go ahead.

I hope this helps someone decide on whether to buy this bundle. ^_^

***UPDATED 04-17-2004:Well I've come back and looked at this again recently and see that they've lowered the price. For $20 I guess that makes it a little better. It's seems bargain basement compared to the $40 it was at.I still say that if you are just getting this for one of the games then get the updated versions, but if you just want to try these all out then go for it.$20 is hard to pass up for 4 games.Though you still have to remember you have to pay $10 a month to play sims online.*** ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starcraft clone!
This game is Starcraft clone and the developers did a great job doing it. I like how you control all those spaceships. I usually only use spaceships and they are pretty cool. Although, I think Starcraft is better and more original, this game is worth it. Just think of it as an expanision for Starcraft. The requirements are low just like Starcraft and the gameplay seems easy and great to me. The graphics are amazing and it runs pretty smoothly. The sounds are OK and the there are no bugs or anything. This game is must have for any RTS fans unless you don't like the idea of copying Starcraft. I think they did a good job trying to be like Starcraft. This game can be just as satisfying as Warcraft or any other RTS as well. Overall this game will keep you entertained for few weeks if not for months and this game is definitly recommended for all RTS gamers and Starcraft fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars OUTLIVE KICKS HUMAN AND ROBOT POSTIERIERS!!
A Fun addictive little game, 3 senerios of Humand Vs Robot, Robot Vs Human and Human working with Robot Vs Enemy.

If you Love StarCraft, you will like this game alot!Very similar, click on character repeatedly and get funny saying out of them, build up forces and technology and wipe out the opposition.Mainly a fight for resources to build your forces up and attack the other guy like StarCraft,it is challenging to find the right combiation of forces to defeat heavy units of both sides.Good storyline, Not as many missions as StarCraft but fun anyway, game editor to create new games and online multiplayer capability.

Only 2 species, Human and Robot (if robot can be considered a species?) but the combined missions are fun as you may decide to sacrifice one force to keep the other.ADVICE: Air Units take out heavy ground forces, antiair ground units take out air forces, you need both to survive.Technology is fun, but a quick strike with massive ground units can take out anyone, unless you wait too long and their defenses can beat your puny tech units. For the Price, you can't beat it for strategy fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good graphics and some new features
This games is based mainly on Starcraft, with some new features. The graphics are better and it supports resolutions up to 1024x768. Some people are complaining about the originality of the game. But as I see, they wanted to make a game joining many of the good features of the good strategy games of the market, and not a revolutionary product. This game was developed by a group of 8 people, while most of these kind of games are develop by 20 to 30 people. Thus, its quality is impressive. The AI of the game helps the gamer a lot, but also make the opponents much more efficient. The story behing the missions are interesting. To use this product, you don't need a super computer. Many games couldn't run properly on my P233, but the Outlive graphics appeared very, very smooth and fast.

2-0 out of 5 stars not worh it
When you can get Starcraft for less, why spend $ on Outlive? Its basically Starcraft 1 1/2. A few modifications, support for higher resolution, and bad sound don't add up to that cost. Wait til its in the bargain bin and then give it a try.

I think the company would have been better off working with Blizzard on another mod pack for Starcraft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outlive is great!
I've bought Outlive's brasilian version, and I thought it is a grate game. Nice graphics, very strong IA. IMHO, Outlive is better than StarCraft, a "must have" game. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force is as close as we've come so farto participating in an away-team mission. The plot of this first-person shooteris pure Star Trek: during a battle with an alien ship, the badly damagedU.S.S. Voyager is transported by mysterious means to a strange spaceshipgraveyard. It isn't long before the members of the Voyager crew discover theyaren't the only abductees trying to patch their vessel together and escape, andthe adventure begins. As a member of Voyager's newly formed Hazard Team, it'syour job to secure repair materials, gather information about the othersurvivors, and ultimately enable Voyager to resume its long journey home.

Frequently, two or more team members accompany you (including familiar facesfrom the show, such as Seven of Nine), allowing missions to play out more likeepisodes from the series than a solo firefight that just happens to take placein a Star Trek setting. Other team members disable security fields, analyze data, converse with you as the mission progresses, and add some muchneeded firepower in the tough battle sequences. Elite Force uses theQuake III engine to good effect, serving up some beautiful environments, colorful special effects, and smooth frame rates. Our only gripe is that all themissions take place inside various spacecraft, but the architecture used by eachrace is so distinctive that it doesn't feel too repetitive.

Elite Force stays very true to the source material, as we discovered thefirst time we beamed into a Borg Cube and watched the inhabitants march by as ifwe weren't there. We shot a passing Borg to see what would happen: the massiveenvironment sprang to life as the threat was detected, and dozens of angry Borgconverged on our position. The cast of the television series provided the voicesfor their characters in the game, and the artists painstakingly reproduced theinterior of the Voyager. It all lends an authentic flair to this fun game, whichbelongs in the collection of any Star Trek fan. This collector's editionincludes two 48-page Voyager graphic novels, hardbound with black leathercovers, and a Voyager pin. Since similar comic books normally run around $30each, this pack is a genuine value. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Almost like participating in an actual episode of the show
  • Better-than-average voice acting
  • Authentic environments, visuals, and sounds add to the experience
  • Quality Collector's Edition-exclusive goodies are well worth theextra money
Cons:
  • Somewhat boring weapons
  • Plot-driven story line forces linear mission design

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent game!
This game was very enjoyable although it was really hard. I don't like shoot-em-up games that much but it was a lot of fun to play a character in Voyager and the cut scenes were pretty neat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Game
This game is great! But to me, it needs some work on the graphics. Otherwise, you should get this game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Star Trek Game Out There
Best Star Trek Shoot-em'-up game there is.Various levels, bad guys, and weapons, makes this a really fun game.Collector's Edition just includes a nice comic book and an elite force pin.I highly recommend this game for ANY Star Trek fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Star Trek Game!
For all those who said that there were never any good games from a TV show, you were probably right... until now. Just browse the Internet and you'll find that dozens of computer review sites agree with me!

First of all, the graphics: this game is based off the Quake III Arena engine, which means it looks fantastic! All the characters are great looking and the ships and environments where the game takes place have been recreated in exacting detail.(It's so good in fact I've convinced myself to buy the Expansion Pack which has a "Tour Mode" where one can walk through the entire ship... it's as close as I'll ever come to getting on the set!)Sufficed to say, it's the best looking Star Trek game I've ever seen!

Next, gameplay, for what is a game if it's boring?IMHO, Elite Force has plenty to offer; I've played through it on the middle difficulty and have started it again on the hardest setting.I'm not sure how long it took me to beat it, but I didn't have a "Hmm, that's it?" feeling at the end... FYI, I consider myself a fairly adept first-person-shooter gamer. The scenarios and tasks are challenging and the mystery and "What's going on now?" feeling is definitely present, making for a very exciting game. The added humor between some of the Hazard Team members (namely Chell and Beisman) lightens the sometimes serious mood of the game.

Next up: sound. The SFX are essentially the same as on the show, each weapon has its own sound (of course!), and all the characters from the TV show have joined up to voice the game (except Seven of Nine in the premier release; you'll have to download the patch to get her voice in the game). What more is there to say?

Now, to the specifics of the Collector's Edition. In addition to the game and manual, it comes with a CD Music Soundtrack, lapel pin, and two part comic book.I think the music is excellent, and have stored it in my MP3 player... although I was a little disappointed at first that the opening title wasn't the same as in the show, I've come to enjoy it quite a bit.The CD also contains some game art.Regarding the pin, I've to agree with Minh Doan that it's not the communicator, but instead a STV:EF logo pin.Oh well... one of few, if any flaws in the package. The final item is the comic book with two stories: I haven't actually read the book in order to preserve its "mint condition" but it's a nice addition.

Overall, I'd recommend the game to any FPS fan or ANY Star Trek fan (this is what you've been waiting for Trekkers!).Even if you don't like Star Trek, you'll enjoy this game because of its value, not only as an FPS, but as a simple strategy game.5 stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Fun Than the TV show..
..but that is not saying much. What I will say is that the game is a lot of fun to play and the graphics are excellent. You have a wide assortment of weapons to frag with, from a hand-held phaser to a personal photon torpedo launcher. The level designs range in quality from good to spectacular (I love the one with the "invisible floor"). I recommend this game to anyone who likes Star Trek and FPS games. Elite Force is what "Voyager" should be: a fun experience. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Many action games begin with a catastrophic event, but none matchesthe intensity of the opening level of Half-Life, a first-personshooter published by Sierra Studios. Utilizing a heavily modifiedQuake 2 engine, the game follows a day in the life of Gordon Freeman, amild-mannered scientist who inadvertently opens a portal to an aliendimension.

As Gordon, you'll battle a variety of hostile alien creatures and some not-so-friendly government soldiers while you attempt to escape from theunderground--and heavily ravaged--testing facility. Featuring both an engaging, atmospheric single-player experience and frenetic multiplayer action(supporting both local network and Internet play), Half-Life is currently one ofthe best games of it type.

What makes Half-Life special is its combination of crisp 3-D graphics (supporting many 3-D hardware accelerators), creepy ambient sound effects, andnail-biting action, which creates an immersive, movie-like experience. In momentsreminiscent of the movie Aliens, creatures leap from behind desks, drop down out of air vents, and pounce from dark corners--nowhere is safe, andyou'll often feel overwhelmed and outgunned. Speaking of weapons,Half-Life features an imaginative offensive and defensive arsenal, from a simple crowbar to the explosive heat-seeking rocket launcher andcrafty crossbow. If you're looking for an action-packed, story-oriented gamethat continues to impress after many hours, check out Sierra's Half-Life. --Doug Radcliffe ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dark and Brilliant Thrill Ride
Gordon Freeman is a scientist assigned to the secretive, subterranean bowels of a desert research facility. An experiment in particle physics goes awry, space is ruptured, and through the breach comes all manner of alien nasties.

The plot sounds cliche, but that's only because so many games have since imitated (or tried to) what Half-Life pioneered. The game is a FPS of great quality and unusually effective storytelling (it demonstrates a classic show-don't-tell technique) and weaves an unsettling atmosphere that is tough to shake. As Freeman tries to escape from his labyrinthine workplace to the promise of upper ground, a spectacular pace is set as he confronts nightmarish enemies... not all of which are alien.

If you don't have Half-Life as part of your gaming collection, here's why you should:

1. A paranoid, oppresive claustrophobia is built quickly and skillfully. There are no cut-scenes to break the spell. Once you begin playing, you're locked inside an unfolding nightmare. Few games (and fewer films) have ever managed to craft such a relentless atmosphere.

2. The AI is chillingly realistic. This is all the more impressive when you realize this isn't a new game. Enemies demonstrate intelligence, tactical planning, and behave as few video game creations do.

3. As mentioned above, Half-Life pulls a challenging story-telling stunt. As Gordon Freeman, you never get all the answers. No book with The Solution falls into your lap, and no omniscient character fills in all the blanks. Instead, the plot unfolds with nuance and implication... allowing a player to draw his/her own conclusions. This could easily have backfired. Instead, it works.

4. The alien creatures are masterfully depicted. Two of them are so disturbingly realistic that I can completely believe somewhere in the universe they actually exist: the "ceiling barnacles", and some creepy things that emit an ear-splitting sonic attack while convulsing their malformed bodies.

Enough said. Half-Life is an own-it experience.

Ihate to say this? but this game is not compatible with Windows XP OS, so owners of newest Dell computers have to install compatible OS.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old game still worth buying...
Made in 98, but still better quality, play, and design than most games on the market in '05.Good storyline, great AI and graphics, not-overly aggressive system requirments, tons of add-ons available.Incredible single player mode, good weapon selection, and arguably one of the best FPS online games of all time.If you like HALO, you will like Halflife.Very similar, but no limit on how many weapons you can carry, and the levels aren't as repetative.(My biggest complaint about Halo, though it's obvious why, many of the levels and hallways are exact copies of one you've seen dozens of times already...gives a feeling of being lost, and even fed up at times.) Halo does have the edge as far as cars and what not though. I also recommend Halflife 2, the sequel to what I'm talkin about here...INSANE graphics and gameplay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best
You know, you shouldn't even have to read the reviews. If you see that this game has 4 1/2 stars, even though it was made way back in 98, you should know that its good. But good doesn't describe this game. Its better than great, excellent, or even outstanding.I'm going to have to say that this game is groundbreaking. Before this game, shooters were shooters. This game is a shooter that just happens to have a Final Fantasy quality storyline as well. And don't think that you'll be sitting around all day watching cinemas. No, the entire story is delivered to you in real time via other characters talking.*Note*This is not one game you want to play with the sound off!I'll now break the game up into 5 major categories, Graphics, Sound, Story, Gameplay, and overall fun.

Graphics are a biggy in a gamers life. Now adays with HL2 and Doom 3 out, were getting spoiled, and expect graphics like that when about 4% of all the nations PC's are capable of it.Half Life's graphics are very good, but you can easily see why it was made in 1998.The close up images are extremely pixelated, and blocky. But the overall movement is smooth, and if your rig can handle it, the cranked up Graphics are the best eyecandy available for games made in that time period.18/20

Sound is also a major factor in this game.Creepy sounds coming from unseen creatures, characters talking and giving away the great story, and finally fantastic weaponry sound effects.20/20

Story is one of the big plusses in this game, and rightfully so.Fantastic is all I will say.Fantastic story.Fantastic story telling.Fantastic Pace.Nuf said.20/20

Gameplay is big in this game as well. The controls are phenomanal(sp.), the menu is easily accesable, and switching through weapons is a breeze.Only problem is that there are alot of buttons to get used to.Still, if your commited, this category is also a winner.18/20

Finally, this is overall a very fun game.Stressed out?Tired from work? Then pop in Half Life and sit back.Blowing away monsters is a very good stress reliever.Add to that that the gory effects are great(blood splatters, organs and bones flying all over the place) if you are not turned off by blood. But if you are, why the hell are you playing an M game with a guy holding a gun on the front cover?!20/20

Final score 96/100 which means this game is a rare gem that you should indulge upon immedietly.I can't wait for our new computer to arrive so I can get Half Life 2!Oh yeah.I forgot to tell you it has an absolute kick @$$ online mode!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best.....nuff' said

Amazon.com Review

Ask any number of gaming experts and they'll likely confirm that Activision's 1995giant-robot action title MechWarrior 2, despite its numerous overhauls and long-delays, remains one of the most groundbreaking and exciting games of all time. Now Activision revitalizes the classic with MechWarrior 2: Titanium Edition.

The new edition boasts new 3-D graphics, supporting both 3Dfx and Rendition hardware, and provides a slightly updated look without compromising the classic's proven, action-packed gameplay. Even though MechWarrior 2: Titanium Edition's improved 3-D visuals and sound effects don't stack up favorably against modern games, if you never experienced MechWarrior 2, here's your chance to relive one of the most complete action titles ever conceived.

The player assumes command of gigantic, lumbering BattleMechs and, in many missions, oversees a squad of friendly team members controlling their own huge metallic juggernauts. Before each mission (MechWarrior 2: Titanium Edition includes over 30 missions), players select from 15 different BattleMechs, varying in size, speed, and durability, and customize them with over 20 different weapons, such as missiles, lasers, and equipment like coolant devices and jump jets. MechWarrior 2: Titanium Edition's diverse mission objectives, instant action missions, customizable BattleMechs, and NetMech multiplayer capability provide a nearly infinite amount of replaying. --Doug Radcliffe ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Mechwarrior 2 remains one of my fondest gaming memories. This is the game that made giant robot fighting fun and exciting. In it's time it was the pinnacle of gaming technology, using advanced 3D graphics and real time lighting. The gameplay was also excellent, combining an epic story, detailing one mercenary groups exploits before and during the clan invasion. While you where free to pick and choose jobs that suited you, certain jobs had to be taken eventually to advance the story.Over the course of the game, you will find yourself waging war in the various border skirmishes between the great houses, fighting for fame and fotune in the Solaris VII arenas, and doing your part in stopping the clan juggernaught. The fact that the game gave you choices is what makes this game stand out.No longer where you forced to do the right thing. At times people who you where fighting against would offer you more money if you fight on their side, and the choice to do so is yours.

I would recomend this game to anyone who has ever loved playing the mechwarrior series of games, or anyone who simply enjoys the idea of giant robots fighting other giant robots. You can see how the genre was really created, and play the game where you could customize your mechs based upon the Battletech rules of war.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the game that started a PC revolution!
This game is fantastic, and because of it's age, will run on older computers. There was a game that came out before this one called Battletech 3: Mechwarrior, but it was really bad. I think it was only 16 colors, if that tells you anything.

The 3D graphics are spartan for today's standards, but if you want to see the first generation of Mech combat, grab this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello, 'Mechs!
This is a great game for beginners and experts on MechWarrior. It's got everything. It has I.S.(Inner Sphere) and Clan 'Mechs. It helps you understand MechWarrior.I repeat, this is a terrific game.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great game !
Mech2's expansion is a great game.

I have never seen so many mechs in one game of all the mech games I have played this is the only one with a large ammount of mechs includeing the common mechs now Timber Wolf, Dire Wolf, Atlas, and my personal favorite mech the Elemental not a mech but a body armor hehe 1 star of those vs a Dire Wolf is a great fight :)

The Single Player missions are pretty good they take a while to beat as you are a Mercenary you can higher lance mates and you have contracts for decideing where you fight. The ability to choose where you fight is very nice considering some of the battles are right out of battletech history :) so you can play out history instead of just reading it.

The online gameplay is good they have improved alot over mechwarrior2's online gameplay which had the DFA bug and several other small bugs to my knowledge there is not as many bugs in this game.

Another thing that is very nice is that they upgraded the graphics in this version and the 3dfx version. The previous version did not have that good of graphics.

Good things:

Lots of Mechs
You choose where you fight in single player
very few bugs
Updated Graphics

Bad Things:
Well far as I can see there are none besides the fact that your a Mercenary and personnaly I perfered the Clan Story line over the Merc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Crap! This Game ROCKS!
If your like me and like battletech things, this is it.It's pretty cheap to buy but is really good and has some really good missions. And it's almost exactly like the battletech board game.It has all of the rules. And the cool option is that you can override the shutdown. This game rocks! ... Diabo's smite-the-evil action made the game a hit, but its random story generator, which greatly changes the layout, foes, and quests each time a player restarts, made it a game numerous game developers want to copy. The story is straightforward: an evil demon named Diablo has wiped out your entire village and has taken up residence under a cathedral on the outskirts of town. Most everyone is afraid of going near that place, but not you. Start as the frail sorcerer, the marksman rogue, or the tough-as-nails warrior and devise a battle strategy that suits your character's skills and weaknesses. Descend deeper into the catacombs to stamp out evil, buffer your experience, and pick up stronger weapons and spells--you're going to need them.

As if that weren't already enough to keep you playing for quite some time, this package includes the Hellfire authorized expansion pack, which provides even better weapons, more magical items, deeper levels, and a new character class: fearless monk. If you're the type who doesn't like to walk alone through the valley of the shadow of death, log on to Battle.net, where you can find up to three other players to join your party for free. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hellfire
Hellfire is a good single player expansion for diablo. The only bad thing about it is that it doesnt add as much as you would expect. But there are tons of things great about this game. Like the new character class the monk also new quests and over 20 new demons. The expansion adds a couple of spells and potions it also adds 2 new places to explore, the hive and the crypt. Fun game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diablo 1 review
If you are thinking about buying this game go ahead and do it. This game kicks ... There is lots of adventure. You get to choose to be a rogue, warrior, or a sorcerer. You can also buy items and work your way up to be stronger and learn skills and spells. All of my friends have it to and all of them love it so if you are thinking about buying it go ahead and do it. I hope this review was a good help to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars hellfire (diablo add on)
interesting idea...however cant play on the net with it...and thats 90% of the game there.

4-0 out of 5 stars great additional items, but not multiplayer
Diablo Hellfire allows you to become 2 new character classes, theBarbarian and the monk. There are also many more items to find in thisadd-on, from armor to weapons to magical items. However, Diablo Hellfireis restricted to single-player gaming, and cannot be played on Battle.netfor multiplayer action. This is very disappointing, but somewhat of arelief since you don't have to deal with all those cheaters and hackers.

4-0 out of 5 stars hellfire: a review
I think this is quite a good game. In Hellfire, you are able to pick from 6 different characters, instead of the usual three as in Diablo. I think this is a very good improvement because some people, such as myself, becomebored after playign Diablo for a while and only having three characters tochoose from.there are also many new quests, creatures, dungeons, weapons, and characters. This presents a wider variety of actions, and i believethat that quality is more important than most. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars everquest evolutions
This is beth, overrall it's probably a four star game it's not boring but it takes so long to get to level 65 heck my highest char is only level 40, she's a human monk but she's the best player i have, although i like emmaria my dark elf too. Anyway they have great gear but it took up some of my allowance, it's hard to earn lots of money unless u buy it.
The thing that is great about this game is that you can play with your friends, group, and be all sorts of races, if you don't have 50 k and good gear you're done for in the higher levels. The graphics are pretty good and going shopping in the bazaar rocks, I love my horse! Doing magic isn't my favorite thign to do, and it's more expensive. You have to buy new spells and get a wardrobe that gives you good mana. Fighters is where all the action is in my opinion, like the Warriors, Rogues, monks, paladins...if you really like doing magic pick the enchanters who can make themselves turn into pots and other races which is fun, or the wizards who can cast heavy damage, but if you want to be a shoewin to be chosen in the group, pick a CLERIC clerics are always invited in. The fighting doesn't have much gore, and looting is pretty fun. You develop online friends a lot of times so it's fun to chat with them. Another thing about evolutions is that you get legacies of ykesha (however you spell it) luclin, and plain old eq and traveling is always fun you can go into all these cool places but on the higher levels you have to stay in one place for a long time which gets boring :(. It's hard being a newb luckily my friend helped me out! I've played for 1 and a half years since i don't go on on schooldays only on weekends and summer break. I must admit it is a definitley Challenging game, i don't go on anymore really, cuz i've gotta concentrate on school more. It's probably not as good for kids like me becuz it's sort of addictive and obsessive, but it's a REALLY COOL game to do in ur spare time! Hope I helped all the newbies who might wanta try it out!

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I just found this game boring. There's little else I can say.I have played a whole bunch of games, and this did not catch my interest after a year.I mean, I'm still playing Diablo and Diablo II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
The ultimate game ever. This must be played. Yeah the graphics are kinda crummy (now they've improved though) and it can get boring at early levels. Then it gets fun. Its great when grouping because the group can support one another and get some major XP. It gets better when you are invited into a guild 'cos there can be some real nice people in it (or really boring ones). I personally play on the Povar server and am an officer so I can invite people into my guild (all hail Chaotic Vision). The guild is very nice so if you are looking for a guild send me a /tell and I'll come find ya! =)

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucks.
I have no idea why people like this game. Here is a list of bad things about it:

1.It has patheticly bad graphics.
2.You spend numerous hours farming off bats and rats.
3.You die very easily.
4.You don't see yourself attacking enemies.
5.I could go on, but I'm lazy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Corporate policies
Problem with EQ is that Sony has decided to consider paying customers as a secondary concern. Here are some of the problems you will face in purchasing this product.

Firstly, if you don't have every expansion, then Sony will attempt to get you to buy that expansion with a pop up window. Never mind that you are already paying them to play their game. Friend of mine got all but the latest expansion and got harassed immediately the day he signed up. Current expansion (Omens of War) doesn't come out until July. They started harassing us 2 or 3 weeks ago about it. This will continue on a daily basis and there is no way to play the game without dealing with it. You can't ignore it or escape out of it. There is no way to turn the solicitation off. Not Sonys policy. Glad my playstation doesn't do the same thing.

Secondly, bugs can take weeks or never to be fixed. Sony has been prioritizing releasing expansions and making changes to the game instead of fixing the bugs that have been present for some time. For example, boats were a long standing problem (years) that never worked properly. With Gates of Discord what do they add? MORE BOATS. Yup, these didn't work either. Go fig.

Customer service. Well if your having issues in game, it will take anywhere from hours to weeks to get assistance. The only way to do this is to stay logged into the game until you get a response (and hopefully you will be looking at your screen at that time). If you log out, your request will be deleted. They tend to have many loopholes as far as player assistance is concerned. Like not having 'exact' verbage for example. Also, if you need outside technical help, the employees working for Sony will either tell you to petition in game (see the beginning of this paragraph for how effective that is) or tell you to check the online help file.

Now if all those problems don't detour you, here are the benefits. Other people I have met online can be a joy to work with. EQ is a game designed for grouping and it is strongly encouraged. Many zones to explore with various mobs to fight. Quests are fun for items or faction (exp is always negliable). There is tradeskilling, which can be tiresome but also a good way to bring in income. It is a hack and slash game though. Don't you think otherwise. Thats the only way to get any exp to lvl. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars what is going on?
I bought this game in anticipation of a better sequel to Razorworks Apache/Havoc, but I could not get the game to work right, and I tried it on 3 seperate systems! The game loaded O.K., but when I tried to use a joystick the views were locked in a certain position. It was impossible to fly! I even downloaded the demo version and the same thing happened! I tried to get support from Take2 Interactive with no luck. So I just gave up! Bummer!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST HELICOPTER FLIGHT SIM EVER
To say the least this simulator is the BEST. Its Graphics are excellent and AI is Very Good. This simulator has a somewhat eerie reality to it.Although to get the most fun out of it I highly suggest that you also have Enemy Engaged Apache Vs. Havoc installed so that when playing Comanche Vs. Hokum you can also fly the AH-64D Apache for the USA or the Mi-28N havoc-B For Russia, also having Apache Vs. Havoc allows you to fly in 6 different campaigns all over the world from the Middle East to The Jungles of Eastern Asia to small island of Cuba, in any of the 4 Combat Helicopters. Comanche Vs. Hokum also provides much better control over your wingmen than any other combat simulator I have ever experienced. You have about 20 different radio commands, including 6 different formations for your flight group, as well as 16 different mission types. Also there are so many different types of aircraft in the game, assault, recon, attack, transport helicopters on both sides, as well as numerous `fast movers' such as AV-8B's, F-16's, F-18's, A-10's, C-130's, C-17's and that is just for the Americans, the Russians have: Attack, Recon, Assault, Transport, Russians also use `fast movers' such as Su-25's, Mig-29's, Yak-41's Su-27, as well as a variety of Heavy lift Fixed wing transports.
But one of the things that I love the most is the Ground war that is constantly going on.Even when you are not actively engaged (or even flying) AI troops are `sluggin it out' on the ground and in the air, although this may not directly affect YOU it may in the future... meaning a lack of fuel, or ammo during later missions.
Once again I will say that this simulator is THE BEST that there is.It is totally worth the small amount of money that you pay for it, Remember this little box can provide hundreds of hours of relentless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars ghostriders
one thing about this game I don't like is your recon missions
you have to fly to close for a recon mission in some cases you will get shot down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best helicopter sim on the pc
When i bought this game I didnt even want it, it came with another game that I did want. But when i installed this I was blown away, this game the $hit. You can either pilot an American Commanche or a Russian Hokum, personally I prefer the Commanche. The controls take getting used to but the flying and the combat are wonderful, it has a complete and detailed manual and the game is very accurate. The graphics are the best part, they make combat flight simulator 2 look like an atari game, the system requirements are low and it runs on windows xp.This game is highly underrated and it is unfortunatley an overlooked gem that deserves more attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice game but....
Enemy Engaged is a nice game. The graphics look great and the gameplay is detailed and realistic.Almost too realistic actually. If you are looking for a sim that has a lot of high octane action that has you scrambling to take out multiple enemies all at once, look elsewhere.Action is not the focus of EE.Realism is the name of the game.

Overall a good game.Tech. support could be better though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The most underrated strategy game ever made
Firstly, yes, this is the "prequel" to Dark Reign 2, anotherReal-time strategy game that got short-shrift from gamers. Dark Reign hadthe misfortune to be released at the same time as Total Annihilation. I'vealso played Total Annihilation, and I admit that I found Dark Reign to bemuch more fun.

The two strongest features of Dark Reign are it'sunit-control interface and artificial intelligence, which have only beenrivalled by one other game - Age of Empires 2. On Easy level, the enemywill send squadrons of diverse units against your base. For instance, theAI might send tanks and ground troops, only to have them vaporised by yourturrets. It might then send air units against your base, which has noanti-air guns.

The unit-control is even better than Dark Reign 2. You cancommand your units to scout the entire map (and unlike Dark Reign 2 theyreally WILL explore the entire map). You can even send them on harrassmentmissions, which I've found very useful in slowing down enemy AIproduction.

The weakest feature of Dark Reign is it's storyline. Insteadof actually being a member of the warring armies, you're actually anobserver replaying historical battles. The only real excitement is at theend, when you utilise units and buildings from both sides to defeat bothopposing armies. The final mission is definitely NOT for thefainthearted.

It's unfortunate that Dark Reign didn't get the kudos itdeserved. It's graphics may not have been of the same standard as TotalAnnihilation, but it's intense gameplay easily surpassed that of it'srival. ... Read more

We ordered a new DVD through Amazon via Sail On. They sent us a used DVD (no packaging), which did not work. After stringing us along, we returned the DVD and were promised a replacement or refund. Needless to say, they have avoided our e-mails since. I would recommend NOT dealing with Sail On Software.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Game Is CLASSIC
How could somebody not enjoy this game?!I know it works with Windows 98, but I haven't tried it with XP yet.I doubt that anybody plays online anymore, but it's still cool. The graphics were far ahead of their time, back in the day, but now they are extremely obsolete.I'd pay $5 just to see one of the first games to utilize 3d graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars It may be old, but it is still fun to play
It is for games like these that I keep an older system in working order, just in case I feel the urge to play the games I've truly enjoyed over the years.I've owned this one for many years and have enjoyed the gameplay, controls and even the music with this one.The Mech games that followed did not have the same impact or make the same impression on me as this one did.Sure the graphics improved, but something seemed lost along the way.As perfect example, the latest in the Mech series (MechWarrior 4 from (gag!) Micro$oft) does not have the external views, no screenshot or movie capture features, the HUD is disrespectfully different than in Mech 2, etc., and there's just too much dialog in Mech 4 - I mean, who the heck cares?Just shutup get me into the gameplay.Mech 2 definitely started it all and my only disappointment was that Activision did not have a hand in the Mech games that followed.I felt they did a superb job with Mech 2.
I've read reviews from people who give this game a bad rap just because they are not smart enough to make it work on their XP machines.I bought this one 8 years ago, and mine was for MS DOS - before the Win95 version even came out.But I still feel it is worth while to keep an older computer running just to play some of these classics.I still enjoy the game today...

5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciate a Classic
Well though it's not wise to read a review based on an uninformed idiot who can't see a classic when he sees one...of course the graphics are not gonna be up to par with todays games. Hence the word CLASSIC. For the Avid Btech fan and for anyone into Mecha this is possibly one of the greatest games of all time and just go online and read any review you will see very few negative comments if any. The Sound the Music the Story all of it...it's great. Top notch graphics for it's time but if you want something more up to date play Mechwarrior 4.You can even listen to the soundtrack on your cd player...it's great stuff and a must buy...

3-0 out of 5 stars And that experience is FIRE ACTIVISION!!
While it was new, it was cutting edge technogoly, but looking at it now, HA HA HA, LAME!I will never play this again. It doesn't work with my computer , the XP, anymore.Back in the the Windows 95 days, I was still stuck on mission 3.See here...

Crap, really lame! The graphics are horrible.Come on, when we first saw this, we were like "WOW, dude how did you do that"If people said "dude" back in 1996.good then, bad now.The prblem is the... every thing else. This is hard to review (I've got time) because it's so outdated. In 7 years the game industry has really changed. The sound is very basic conpared to nowdays games but the music is still my favorite. The best, Jerry, the best.

Story time!In 3057 the Clans little crazy invasion of the big Inner Sphere failed, and two Clans, the Wolf and Jade Falcon are so upset that the little babies are throwing thier toys at each other.Controls are very easy, a monkey could do it (then again a monkey could beat every MW game expect for MW3)Not that many mechs, short game, make this a learning experience. And that experience is, FIRE ACTVISION!! ... Amazon.com Review

Let's face facts. Star Trek's popularity isn't due to its fascinating stories or complex character interactions. People watch it for the combat. Massive ships facing off in the vast void of deep space, phasers crisscrossing, torpedoes flying--this is the stuff that made Wrath of Khan great. Now computer users can get in on the fun that board gamers have been having for years with Star Trek: Starfleet Command, a real-time starship combat simulation that boldly goes where no Star Trek computer game has gone before.

After choosing from one of several authentic Star Trek races, players are free to test their battle skills in a single scenario or proceed through an entire campaign. The missions play out like Star Trek episodes, so you'll contact new alien races, investigate anomalies, and fend off enemies attempting to infiltrate your slice of the star map. There are many ships to choose from (or earn in the campaigns) with a multitude of weapons systems and special abilities, so you'll never run out of new tactics to try.

Combat takes place in real time on a 2-D map, but all the ships, starbases, and other objects on the map are rendered in 3-D. The graphics--especially the special effects--are spectacular, as are the sound effects. The latest patch for the game cuts shield strengths in half, making battles much more intense, but even without the fixes Starfleet Command stands as one of the best Star Trek games ever produced. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Spectacular special effects
  • Dozens of ships to command
  • Complex missions
Cons:
  • Needs latest patch to be truly fun

1-0 out of 5 stars Does NOT work in Win XP
As I'm unable to "fully" review this game, let me just say, the game is not compatible with WIN XP.If you are lucky (or foolish) enough to still be running Win 98, then you may be able to get the game to load.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make it so!
Did you ever want to buy a Star Trek game that offered excellent tutorial functions, a realistic on-screen display and 3D rendering gameplay that allowed you sit in captain's chair? Well, it's here so you better click Buy Now! because this is the game you've been waiting for. Play one of 5 races: Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn, Lyran, or Hydran. All races have their own unique ships and game play which looks pretty close to what you see on the box...which is very unusual for any pc games. The opening movies are the best I've seen compared to games of its time and the bugs that are in this game are minimal. (Having a decent video card is a must - 4 mb video ram is minimal but I say at least 16 mb). This game will run on an old Pentium computer that has a good video card. It allows you to adjust options and tweak it a bit to fit your machine. It has a number of options, ships, crew selection, missions, and so forth that you choose from. I have been playing this game for a year and it is most fun I have had with any real time strategy game. This game gets my highest regard so it is highly recommended - you will not be disappointed!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn?t recommend it until the bugs are fixed.
The game of shear strategy is totally awesome. It is intense and may be as obsessive a game as Diablo 2. With the variety of characters available for play, boredom is not an option.

Though the graphics are fantastic and real to life, don't get too obsessed in any one mission, or game play, as some unfixed bug in the program will undoubtedly crash and/or lock up your system.

I have downloaded the update patch available from the online SFC2 site, but the program lock-up remains.

That in my opinion is the major pitfall of playing this game at all...the game has potential, but I wouldn't recommend it until the bugs are fixed.

After all, what fun is a game if you have to reboot your system just about the time things start to get interesting?

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better S.T. games (more like 3 1/2 stars, though)
This is the best Star Trek simulation I've played (and I've been looking for a good one since the early 1980s).Many ship designs (and the ability to customize them), several races to play, good graphics, and well-done music and sound effects.Nothing like catching an enemy in a tractor beam and slugging it out while transporting marines onto his ship. The tutorials are also very informative. There are some problems with the game, though. In one of the federation scenarios, I couldn't win without sacrificing a ship (though I should have been able to use a tractored enemy ship as the sacrifice). The game is a first-class flight simulator, but not much else. You don't really get a sense that moving about the galaxy changes the game in any meaningful way. Also, even though you have crew members who have names, they are nothing more than statistical probabilities that can help or hinder game play, not communicative crew members. After finishing all of the scenarios (which I have not), I imagine this game does not have much replay value beyond customized skirmishes that you can create.Altogether, the price of this game makes it a good value, and probably one of the better games in the Starfleet Command series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the bridge, captain!
I have tried a lot of games, and this one is one of the best! It takes you onto the bridge of your favorite deep space vessels, like the Miranda-Class USS Reliant, The Constitution-Class USS Enterprise A, and the Excelsior-Class USS Enterprise B. It lets you take command of up to 3 ships at a time, as an officer from any one of 6 different races, where you are in complete control. This is definately one of my absolute favorites! ...
