Yet to some strategy-gamers like Yours Truly, Rebellion (known in the UK as Star Wars: Supremacy) does have its virtues. While it is a strategy game on a galactic scale, it does combine elements of roleplaying (players can send major Star Wars characters from page and film on missions)and space warfare at the tactical level (once a player has built a few fleet units, they can be sent from their territory into enemy systems to invade planets or engage opposing fleets). Players can choose to play as either the Empire or the Rebel Alliance, choose the level of difficulty, and the amount of planetary systems that will appear in the Galactic Information Display. The tougher the level, the more systems will gravitate to the oppposite side. The object of the game, of course, is to control as much of the Star Wars galaxy as one can, with each side having ultimate victory goals that must be achieved. To be more precise, the Rebels must capture both Darth Vader and the Emperor, while at the same time taking and holding Coruscant. The Empire's mission is similar but trickier. Not only are Mon Mothma and Luke Skywalker to be in Imperial custody, but Alliance HQ must be destroyed. But unlike Coruscant, the Rebel HQ complex (it looks like Cloud City) can be moved from one Alliance controlled system to another.(Those who find the complete Victory conditions to be too hard at first might choose the HQ-only option.) Things I like about Rebellion: What I don't like: 1. It depends too much on mouse clicks. Another reviewer called this game the Death by 1,000 Clicks (or something along those lines).I have gotten used to this, but getting used to something doesn't mean you have to like it. 2. Team building.Supposedly, you can make a team of various characters to accomplish missions...or send out decoys to divert the enemy. While fine in theory, either the program is faulty or I am as dense as a Kowakian monkey-lizard.It did take me several months just to figure out the basic game, even after reading the manual, but geez...I still can't get the Team thing done. For an older game, it is not without its bugs -- it does crash from time to time and some of its features do get annoying, but Rebellion is still entertaining and fun to play. What more can one ask of a game designed in the late 1990s for Windows 95/98....except maybe a Prequel edition or a revamped Classic Trilogy/EU version with new graphics? ... Amazon.com Review The default view has you in the big chair. Everything is '80s-era beige, confirming that this is indeed the Next Generation. In front of you is thefamous view screen. Your engineer, science officer, first officer, tacticalofficer, and navigator/communications officer are where you'd expect to findthem. As events unfold, you can click on these officers and an orders menu opensup. This way you can quickly order your com officer to hail that ship, or thescience officer to scan a nearby target. During combat you can order yourtactical officer to target certain enemy subsystems (like the warp drive), oryou can take control and do your own targeting and firing if you want. Yourengineer can be ordered to prioritize repairs or boost power to the weapons. This lets you play like a real captain in that you're hearing reports, givingorders, and taking as much personal control as you like. You can even take awalk about the ship with the keyboard in the optional (and breathtaking)third-person view. It's very clever how all this works and thankfully the artificial intelligenceis more than up to the task. The story here is very deep and very StarTrek, and so are the music, sound effects, and voice acting. Patrick Stewartand Brent Spiner (Captain Picard and Commander Data, respectively) are even onhand to give advice during two different points in the story. The missions arevery linear and you can only save between them, but there are plenty ofbranching points that let you handle things your way. Though the main plotdoesn't encourage a replay once you finish it, you can extend your enjoyment ofthe game through full multiplayer options and a handy Instant Action simulatorthat lets you set up any battle you like. The graphics are stunning, except when it comes to the people. The stiffcharacter graphics look like something out of 1997's Jedi Knight, ratherthan real people, and the lip-synching is awful. But you won't be watchingpeople talk nearly as much as you'll be watching Klingon vessels trading puncheswith massive Romulan warbirds, as the Cardassians and Ferengi skulk nearby andyour crew looks to you for your orders. Never has an episode of Trek cometo life quite this well. If you winced when Riker piloted the Enterprisewith that pop-up Thrustmaster joystick in Star Trek: Insurrection, youlove the smell of spark-spewing bridge consoles in the morning, and you've everwanted to listen to a crewman's so-crazy-it-just-might-work suggestion and reply"Make it so," then this game is for you. --Bob Andrews Pros: Reviews (261)

The only long-term fun is to see how many tickets can be collected, but the rewards for collecting tickets (the water slide) is probably the most boring game on it.As a mom, I can say that this was not a game I would have bought if we had tested it first.

Amazon.com Review For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files. The company has concentrated its efforts on games. All the prelaunch titles we've seen play smoothly, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional bottlenecks that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down; hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum. The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based medium rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas (Pikmin, anyone?). While most other systems likewise have their games stored on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as to deter would-be software pirates. Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers: Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can play Nintendo games only on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokémon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars. The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games--it's even got a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming. In short, the GameCube isn't an all-in-one entertainment system, and neither is it the most powerful of the modern video game consoles. But for video game enthusiasts who want to stick with their favorite characters, its value cannot be beat. --Porter B. Hall Unit Specifications Features Reviews (487)
