Editorial Review

The person who came up with the phrase "cheaters never prosper"obviously never had a GameShark. This device has already proven to be amust-own for hard-core gamers on other platforms--and now it finallyarrives on the Dreamcast. For the uninitiated, GameShark temporarilymodifies game code to enable special cheats... and we're happy toreport that it works like a charm.

The shiny box includes a videotape that shows beginners how to get themost out of the device, a GD-ROM containing the boot-up software, several preinstalled cheat codes for a variety of games, and a small"code holder" that attaches to the bottom port of your Dreamcastcontroller. To use the device, you just load the included GD-ROM,select the game you want to play from the list, and tell the GameSharkwhich cheat codes to enable. Then you simply insert the game disc whenprompted, and the cheat codes will be in effect as soon as the gamelaunches, courtesy of the little black device attached to your gamecontroller.

One nice thing about this GameShark is that you can use yourDreamcast's modem to connect to the official Web site to grab thelatest codes. Otherwise you can enter them manually. We found that theGameShark was terrific for revisiting older games we've already beaten--andeven better for blowing through rental games we had no plans topurchase. It's easy to use, and new codes are released regularly.

Special note to consumers: It has been reported that there areincorrect codes for the Dreamcast game Resident Evil: CodeVeronica installed on the GD-ROM that accompanies the firstgeneration of GameShark devices. Consumers who find that thepreinstalled codes for this game do not work should visit the InteractWeb site to obtain the correct codes. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Setup is easy, and it comes with plenty of codes
  • Ability to manually enter new codes means you can use this withevery game scheduled to come out for the Dreamcast
Cons:
  • Entering codes manually is a chore
  • Some devices are preloaded with incorrect codes for ResidentEvil: Code Veronica

3-0 out of 5 stars Average GameShark
I bought this for the Dreamcast and thought it would solve all of my problems but really it didn't! Most of the games only have one or two cheats and those do not even help! There are only a few games that I use it for! Anyway, I would stay away from this unless you really need it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst. Product. EVER!
Seriously, the Gameshark is NOT worth it. Although the GameShark is fun to use, it is just to dangerous. Ever since I used my Gameshark i've lost TONS of data of 1 memory card, and from what i've heard it can even Crash your Dreamcast. stay away from El Diablo and his ever gameshark of doom
~The Great Shiro

4-0 out of 5 stars ...dunno if i wanna buy this...
I got my first gameshark when my playstation (dang defective lasers -_-) and it was one of the greatest things i had ever bought, until one of my files got deleted, which was partly my fault for not making a backup :(. It would be great for my dreamcast, except for the fact that the one game i would use it on (PSO, or Phantasy Star Online)i cant make a copy of!XO But other than that game, i would recomend it for any extreme gamer like myself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I hated it. It deleted my game and took up too much of my memory. When i tried to see what was wroung by watching the intructional video, my sega crashed and now i have to buy a new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This product is a great add on to your dreamcast consol. It brings they playing field to a whole new level of X-tream fun[!] I loved it, it made alot of my games much better then SEGA ever could(no affense SEGA)![.]There's only one problem... ... ...
sometimes it messes up your game but that problem is no problem if you have more than one copy of each game's saved data on your memory card. Oh,and it's really easy to use, plus if your real stupid you can use the instuctional video they give you with it. Well, my main point is that theGAMESHARK CDXis... ... Awesome![.] ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad, if it is your last resort
Finding a good Dreamcast controller these days is kind of rare, and finding a good Dreamcast controller for the killer fighting games for the Dreamcast is near impossible. The Dream Pad is decent. It's comfortable, and the inclusion of Z & C on the face are great, but they still are in an odd position. One can get used to it, but this would be a second choice for me, or even a third what with the now super rare ASCII Pad FT for Dreamcast (only released in the Asian market) or a Nuby Tech Street Fighter controller for PlayStation and PS2 + a 3 in 1 Dreamcast controller adapter, which accepts PS2 and Saturn controllers as well as a VMU, which can be found at some import gaming web sites. But if all that is too much a hassle for you, then what the heck, get a Dream Pad, since they will not be in stock forever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Short lifespan. Nice while it lasts.
I love the soft feel of the Madcatz Dreampad -- it's more comfortable than any other Dreamcast controller I've tried. Unfortunately, it is poorly made and lasts only a couple of months (if that) before the buttons start sticking and the controller starts functioning like crap. A real shame. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Nice Controller for 2D fighting games =)
Out of all the Dreamcast controller, including the original one, the Madcatz Dream Pad is the BEST controller for fighting games for two reasons - the excellent D pad and the 6 buttons layout.

PRO:
Most of the Dreamcast controllers D pad sucks - period! The D pad for Dream pad is good - actually VERY good, almost as good as the Sega Saturn D pad (I know, Sega, what happen to the Dreamcast controller D pad??).It is very accurate and smooth. The side gripof the controller is confortable rubber and make holding on to the D pad really nice and easy.I just love the D pad on this controller.

Second, the 6 buttons lay out is almost a MUST for Capcam fighting games!!Sega MESS UP big time on the original Dreamcast controller by not putting 6 buttons lay out.It is almost impossible to play games like Street Fighter 3, or Capcom VS SNK, with any good skill since most of the require FAST all 6 buttonsaccess.I mean, how hard it is to put 6 buttons lay out on the controller?? (MadCatz did it)

CON:
Actually, the over all feel of the controller VERY good.If there is one thing to complain, it would be the analog sticks is a little bit loose compare with original controller. However, it is not a big problem to me and it only took me a short while to adjust to it.

OVERALL:
This is the BEST Dreamcast controller I ever used.I give it an A+++.

(WARNING)
I just found out that There are TWO versions of the Madcatz Dream Pad.

The version 1 (only in white color) comes with a suckie RUBBER D-pad and it is not controlling well.

The version 2 (white and other color available), comes with a NEW rubber/plastic mix D-Pad and it ROCKS!!So if you are looking for Madcatz Dream Pad.Make sure you get the version 2!

4-0 out of 5 stars better then a standard
Better then a standard. Very comfortable also like it more buttons like saturn controller no offense sega .worst part the d-pad will not be a straight cross but leans to the side at that top if you hold down long. My grips havent come off. people hands that sweat like pig get this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great for Me
I don't know what happened to the reviewer who said his graphics were fuzzy using this switch. Maybe he got a defective one. All I know is when I used mine to hook my old SDC to an old spare TV, it worked great! I couldn't tell any difference in video or sound from using the original cables.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous
The adapter istoublesome in the very least. First time I hooked it upthe graphics of Jet Grind Radio were fuzzy, and scratched, so I thought maybe it's just the game. Nope! Every DC game I have used through the adapter play through scratchey noises and off-set colors. Bad!

5-0 out of 5 stars What can i say?
Without out this, i would be trying to connect my DC to my TV through a couple phono cables (which is possible, but not with the equipment i have).

5-0 out of 5 stars What can i say?
Without this, i would be trying to use phono jacks to connect my DC to my TV, which is possible... just not easy when you don't have the right equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maximize Your Graphics
This product was excellent. If you want the best graphics possible, get this. It is also very cheap and effictive. I'm very satisfied with it.I've had it for about a year and I havent found anything wrong with it. It has all the features like a normal RF switch but better than most companies because the graphics are so sharp. If you like to get your graphics the best as possible get this and you will definately be satisfied with the product. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
It was cheap at the time when I got it.I liked it cause it was another controller for me.I do like how you can program your moves when you play games.Oh, and the directional pad does work very well, and is recommened for the game Shen Mue.Although it's good like this there is still a problem. My controller ended up having the analog stick lose grip of the turn base thingy. So now my analog stick spins around continuously.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must NOT Buy
The whole point of a six button controller like the Quantum Fighter pad is to give players of Capcom fighting games which use a six button layout 6 buttons, instead of 4 buttons with 2 triggers or shoulder buttons. The problem with shoulder buttons is the action of pressing them with your index finger forces your thumb to pull away from the D-pad, making special moves very hard to pull off.

Well, the 2 extra buttons on the Quantum pad, instead of performing the action of the shoulder buttons, perform the action of the A and X buttons, which acomplishes absolutely nothing. Furthermore, the shoulder buttons on the Quantum are big, and take a long time to push, hindering your timing on special moves even more. I'm returning mine immediately.

If you want a 6 button pad, go with a Madcatz or an Ascii!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Hacking!
The reason I bought this controller is so I can hack it into a Joystick with arcade parts I bought...Why not use the regular dreamcast controllers, you ask?Because the LR buttons are analog and it's hard, if not impossible, to locate a soldering point.

For whatever reason, I think it's security, that Sega made their controllers with their L R buttons weird, using a magnet to complete the circuit.Although you can't use the LR buttons (or the analog directional pad), I've heard that if you remove it, the dreamcast is smart enough to know that and won't operate. This is something I have to confirm.

With this controller, it comes with six digital buttons that I could use to solder my arcade buttons to.

1-0 out of 5 stars Limitations make it useless
Since you can't program the top buttons to act like the trigger buttons, you can't achieve the true 6-button layout, and that destroys the purpose of having a controller like this. I'm returning mine tomorrow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good controller overall...
This controller is nice, but there are a few things that could be better. First of all, the two extra buttons (Z and C) are scrunched together next to the four standard buttons. Therefore, it makes it a little confusing to distinguish which buttons, and a lot of times, you end up hitting the wrong ones.

The programmable feature is easy and user-friendly; it is done all on the controller with a lot of flexibility. The only dissapointment is that you can't program the triggers.

The trigger work fine with fighting and adventure games, but with racing games, where you have to hold the right trigger the whole time, your finger can get a bit numb after a few minutes. Actually, the triggers are more like buttons than triggers. They don't curve in like the standard Dreamcast controller. Instead, they push in.

With the normal Dreamcast controller, the cord comes from the bottom, which can be a little annoying at times. This cord comes from the top near the memory card and TremorPak slots.

And just to warn you, in the photos in Amazon, and even on the box itself, the controller looks silver. When mine came, it was just beige. I'm not sure if the photos are just a trick of light, or if they make two different colors that come randomly.

So, this controller is pretty nice overall. But if you are going to be mostly playing racing games, this controller is probably not for you. If the controller didn't have any of the programmability or the auto-fire, I definitely wouldn't have bought it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars RF adapter
I bought my RF adapter when my mom stole my VCR from my room when my dad had to travel to work and stole hers. I thought the adapter was a little bit expensive to start with, I could not be bothered to leave my room to play my DreamCast. So I bought the switch. I noticed that the cords were nice and long, which was a bonus because my cable jack is quiet far from my TV. Now, down to playing games with it. The sound and graphics quality not as good as with the standars cords you recieve with your system, but hey! no VCR what ya gonna do? Anyways it worked for me...

5-0 out of 5 stars Sega Dreamcast RF
Well I have to say that this cord comes in handy when you want to have two video game systems plugged in at the same time. For Example if you have a playstation connected to your AV in the back of your vcr and you have no cable or satalite hooked up into your Antena in then you can have the playstation and Dreamcast hooked up at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
The adapter for the dreamcast is extremly useful if you have an older T.V or if you want to hook your dreamcast into a TV that doesnt have a VCR. Its a must buy for car trips and at home. Should get if have older TV!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for those with old TV
I know a friend of mine he wanted to play dreamcast in his own room to avoid problems with his comanding mother... He needed a TV to complete his mission but it's not like buying a piece of cake. So I told him about used old color TV he can buy at afordable prices, and he inmediately got a very good old TV knowing he would need to buy this accesory for dcast. The sound is mono, but he connected the AV sound output to his HI-FI sound system and problem solved. It's not bad, I remember many years ago when I got a SNES, it came with this kind of accesory and if you have a "modern" TV you could get the AV cable. The times have changed...

1-0 out of 5 stars Only buy if you have to!
This thing is a piece of crap! It absolutely insults the Sega Dreamcast's beautiful graphics and sound. Only buy this if you are forced to! By that I mean having an old TV set. Buy the VGA box instead for a hook-up to your PCmonitor. Do not buy this product! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamcast interact rfu adapter
It's awesome! ive had it for 2 years and it still hasn't messed up!

2-0 out of 5 stars Works, but...
Got this with my Dreamcast for christmas, It works fine, but the connector broke within weeks of owning it. It still works, but, the color quality has been lowered and it always falls out of the back of my TV.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good connector
With any RFU adapter for any system, you lose more than you gain.Everything comes out of one connector pin - video & sound - and the amount of qulaity loss is substantial. The video quality is hampered inthat it becomes really, really dim, the colors bleed, and it doesn't havethe crispness that hi-res games should have. The audio is in mono and at alow-fidelity.The standard connection is with A/V cables (where video, left & right audio each have their own wire); check to see if your VCRor tv has these, it's much improved over RFU.The BEST possible connectionis with S-Video (a video cable where color information and brightness areseperated), but not many smaller tv's have this.

If you have to useRFU, then by all means buy this product.Just be aware of the loss ofquality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamcast necessity

4-0 out of 5 stars It Stinks!
This controller is big, bulky, and heavy. I always try to avoid using it. If you want a good controller then stick with the basic controller! Although, it is durable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This controller is very comfortable and very durable. I have been using it for well over a year on many types of games. I have even dropped it a few times. I have big hands and play lots of games where one or two buttons, or the analog stick are constantly being held. Never a problem. My favorite controller.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great design, fragile triggers
I've had two of these Mad Catz controllers - they intially seem superior to the standard dreamcast controller, because they are ergonomically better designed.Unfortunately, the trigger design is poor, and both units have broken right triggers - probably from giving little extra oomph on the gas during driving games.I wish that it wasn't true, because otherwise it is the most comfortable controller available.

1-0 out of 5 stars OK
This con troller is designed fairly well and fits in your hand very well. If your thinking about getting one of those controllers with six buttons instead of four, don't. It is a waste there will never be a game that requires six so don't bother. this controller is probably the right one for you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate organizer
I think this is one of the greastest things to come up with not only does it hold all of your psx2 stuff if you are a messy person and lose things this is the ultimate thing for you. When you use this nothing will get accidently stepped on or chewed on by an animal so i definitley reccomend you go get this.

3-0 out of 5 stars (Yes)for Dreamcast, N-64 & PS1 (No)Playstation 2
1. I'm disappointed because this "video game station" is listed in the PS2 accessories, and that's what I ordered it for... but, because the PS2 it's a tray load system ie, slides out horizontally, it doesn't fit (unless all you want to do is store it there, then take it out to play). But is fine for the "top" loading systems.2. The slide out drawer is large enough to hold many game cd's +the controlers. The top compartmnet will hold a controler too. Also within the top compartment is place to put memory cards with a snapping lid (it was designed for the cords, but this is a better use so their all together and won't get lost).

2-0 out of 5 stars It's great for any video games system except PS2.
I have this video game station and it was great for my playstation console and nintendo 64 but if you got a Playstation 2 and you are planning to get this you should not because the PS2 won't fit in it at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars denise a mohter of 2
Before we purchased this, everything was all over the place. Now that we have the Game Station, my children put everything back where it belongs. Not always back the way I had it, but at least now it ends up in the box and out of view.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good But......
This station is ok, but for the cost of it you probly could go to the local Lumber Store and slap a cupple pieces of plywood togeather and have the same thing for cheaper.
