Editorial Review

Are you sick of fighting games that require months of practicejust to master the basic moves? Try JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, aside-scrolling 2-D fighting game that puts the focus squarely onkicking butt. And along with the great controls and colorful graphicsthat look like they were ripped straight out of a cartoon, players aretreated to a fairly entertaining story as the game progresses.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure adds a few more twists to the standard2-D fighting genre, and the strangest are the sidekicks called Standsthat each player has. These familiars occasionally enter the fray whenthe action heats up, and combined attacks with the characters and theStands are the most powerful in the game. The onscreen action can get alittle confusing since so many things are happening at once, but thesimplistic controls help keep things manageable. JoJo's BizarreAdventure is not the best 2-D fighting game ever made--in fact, inmany ways it seems downright dated when compared to superior 3-Dfighters such as Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2.However, if you are seeking a simple fighting fix, JoJo's BizarreAdventure does make a solid and colorful addition to the Dreamcastlineup. --T. Pros:

  • Cartoon graphics and story line
  • Simple controls make the game easy to learn

  • Not a deep enough fighting game for purists

3-0 out of 5 stars odd game, odd play
Jojo's bizzare adventure is a very strange game. the closest thing I can think of that even remotely is similiar to this is darkstalkers (also made by capcom I believe) the controls are hard to get a hold of, especially on the dreamcast controller, and the graphics are not up to the machines capabilities. (In fact the graphics are very similar to those used on the saturn version of darkstalkers.) the play istelf is quite limited, combos and special moves are difficult to pull off, although they are funny at some times. The horrible quality of the japanese dub (japanese dub is better!) makes the game even more enjoyable and makes you feel like you are playing an import game. all together, the package scores about a 3.3.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay beginner fighter
This isn't the most complex fighter out there, and its far from the best, but it can still be fun and is also a good game to get someone into fighting games who would normally stay away from them since they always get beaten harshly whenever they attempt to play one against a friend. Unlike the Streetfighter games and SNK fighters, this one is more cartoonish (its based on some anime I believe), it is also different in its attacks. Unlike most fighting games where you have several punch and kick buttons, each character has several attacks totally different from the other characters (one character can throw pots and pans, while another can shoot a gun where you can guide the bullets path for example)

The disc itself has two versions of the game on it, one is Jojos venture, and the other is Jojos Bizarre Adventure. Not much difference between the two except "venture" has a survival mode while "bizarre" has more characters to choose from.

The game overall is not going to blow any hardcore gamers away, but it can be a fun and humorous alternative to more complex fighters.

There are better fighters out there for the same price as this one, so only go for this game if you are a diehard fighting fan and feel the need to have as many as possible or a first time player, otherwise you might feel upset over your purchase if you are used to the likes of Street Fighter and Fatal Fury.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you are a Street Fighter fan....DO NOT BUY THIS
I got it for 10 bucks and it's still not worth it.The graphics aren't good, the characters are just stupid, and it's not fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better 2D fighters games out there
I give Jojo's Bizarre Adventure a thumbs up for originality (some very colorful characters and special attacks here), but I think the game is otherwise mediocre. The graphics and animation are below average (compared to games like Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter Alpha), and the game itself is not much fun to play. If you want a good 2D fighting game for your Dreamcast, get one of the Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter titles. The only people bound to enjoy Jojo's Bizarre Adventure are 2D fighting freaks. Others will probably regret their purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect... but not quite
If you enjoyed this game, I highly recommend the PlayStation version. This is the only game I like better on the PSX then the DreamCast. The reason is the Options and Mini-Games available on the PSX are not available on the DC.

The DC does have MUCH better graphics, sound, and full animations for each character, (Middler dances in the DC version for her standing pose!) but only one option, Kiddie Mode.

The PlayStation mode has over 25 secrets to unlock, and 9 mini-games to keep you busy for quite some time! The Stands are transparent and the characters don't have full animation, but all of the attacks are there and the game-play is wonderful. So at least give it a try - you won't go away disappointed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing job Capcom and SNK!
This game is really good.Even though the DC really didn't do so well, this game really makes you wonder why.The game has the classic 2D look, with amazing special effects, and the gameplay is really cool. You can choose whether to use the SNK system (which is like a DBZ way of fighting, as you can gather power for your Special Combo), or you can use Capcom (which I really recommend using, since you have control over how strong your SC is). Also, you can unlock many different versions of characters, even Evil Ryu!The only problem is that the DC controller will destroy your thumb with all the thumb-sliding you have to do for the special attacks. But anyway, pick this game up if you wanna have a good ol' time with your buddies for hours.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Fatal Fury or Project Justice instead
You can not do any 10 hit airial combos because the screen does not pan up when you hit your opponent into the air.

The graphics are very bad. It look like a SNES game. Don't wate your money on this, you will be disoppointed as I was. I expected much better from a game with SNK and street-fighter characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Capcom's VS. Series continues to DOMINATE!
After four vs. games with Marvel, Capcom continues on with this legacy with SNK.This game is cool since you get to play with fighters from the KOF (King of Fighters) Series and the Street Fighter Series. There are also included two hidden bonus characters, one from Samurai Showdown and the other from Night Warriors. The stage entraces are another unique feature that makes this game really cool.I would recommend this game to anyone who likes to play fighting platform games or likes Capcom or SNK games.

4-0 out of 5 stars #2 Fighting game for the DreamCast
I love Capcom and I love SNK, they both make or made great games (SNK which stands for Shin Nihon Kikau went out of business in October of 2001, which in its great run brought us great games such as The King of Fighters) So when I heard they were gonna make a fighting game together I was dancing around a little school girl. I already own Marvel vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 2 and I wanted to see if anything could possibly top them, I was almost sure of it since both companys make the best fighting games ever. Once I bought it I played it for hours on end, unlocking characters, finding new moves. The best part of the game is the graphics, which look like PS2 standards and the Levels are the best I have ever seen in a fighting game. The music and sound is phenomenal. The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars was the [bad] play control, the hyper moves are near immpossible to do and even your simple basic moves were hard to pull off. Still that didn't stop me from playing it over and over again.

If you like fighting games and you have a dreamcast, buy this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of fun...
This review probably won't get printed as I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

Go to capcoms web-site and buy on-line for twenty dollars or go to ANY other on-line retailer who sales dc games.

The game IS worth every penny, it's the most amazing 2D fighter you'll play, if you loved SNK fighters and Capcom fighters from the 80's... get ready for fun. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls... Let's Get Ready to Rumble!" calls renowned ring announcer Michael Buffer to start one of the most impressive boxing video games on the market. Ready 2 Rumble takes full advantage of the Dreamcast's advanced technology, and it shows. Each boxer, be it a gorgeous female pugilist or a towering wall of muscle, is beautifully animated in 3-D: watch Tank Thrasher's enormous gut jiggle and bounce as he's knocked to the mat, or see fighters wince when hit or smugly grin when they land a hard punch. Or feel the action with the optional Jump Pack as your controller shakes with each punch and knockdown. The Dreamcast smoothly integrates all of these enhancements while maintaining a high frame rate. The result: Ready 2 Rumble is an incredibly fun game that delivers a knockout punch.

By far, the best feature of the game is the variety of boxers--20 in all--representing a range of personalities and abilities. Afro Thunder, for example, is a trash-talking, Chris Rock-sounding fighter with a repertoire of ring speed, quick jabs, and over-the-top hooks, while Butcher Brown is a heavy-handed thug built like a dump truck. There's something for everyone, with many nationalities, genders, and fighting styles represented. Since each fighter has different speed, reach, and moves, there is a pleasant amount of depth to the game.

Ready 2 Rumble offers two different game modes: Arcade and Championship. Arcade mode is for one or two players, and is simply a series of boxing matches. The single-player option pits you against a computer-controlled opponent, while the two-player format lets you and a buddy hammer it out. Championship mode puts you in charge of your own boxing gym. You start the game with three rookie fighters, facing off in second-rate gyms, and it's your job to train them in hopes of reaching the championship bout.

Championship mode also lets you access Ready 2 Rumble's most innovative feature: the ability to pit your prized fighters against boxers from a friend's gym through the Visual Memory Unit. Just save your stable of boxers onto the VMU and then use it in a buddy's Dreamcast, where you can fight an exhibition match against one of his or her boxers, or arrange a trade. The VMU also lets you save your progress. Without it, all your boxers (and all the secret characters you've managed to unlock) are erased when you turn off the console. But then again, if you've got Ready 2 Rumble, it's unlikely that you'll turn off the console anytime soon. --Mike Fehlauer

Pros:

  • Impressive graphics and boxer animations
  • Variety of personable, quirky, fun boxers
  • Easy-to-learn controls
  • Great use of peripherals (VMU and Jump Pack)
Cons:
  • Punch combinations can be slow

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Boxing Game for The Dreamcast
Ready to Rumble is a great Boxing game especcially for the Dreamcast.

Gameplay
The gameplay is fun...Kina Cartoony especially the characters.
The combos are sweet.4/5

Graphics
The graphics for the Dreamcast are great....Very smooth especially Afro Thunder and Buther brown...My two favorite Boxers in the game

Sound
The sound is great. The crowd the music...It's all good...Nd' I meaaannn It's ALL GOOD! 5/5

Ready 2 Rumble also has Championship mode which is fun.
You can name your gym and buy equipment to train yourself. And title shots are cool to...But the Prize fights are for the money...

Overall The game is pretty entertaining...It's my favorite Boxing game for the Sega Dreamcast.

Get this game if you have a sega Dreamcast....It's just pure fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Game
My preference is games that have a simple learning curve and have lasting entertainment value. This game has both. You can play well minutes after opening the box and with something like 20 characters, there are always challenges to master each character. My only criticism is of the Championship mode where you train boxers and take them through title fights. The mini-games to train the boxers are pretty weak and the whole process is somewhat tedious.Otherwise, it's a solid game.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Lets get ready to rumble!!"
Now THIS is a cool game. The graphics are very impressive on the Dreamcast. The boxers rule! A cool example is Afro Thunder, who sounds like a combination of Chris Rock and James Brown. My absolute favorite boxer, and one of my favorie video game characters has got to be Damien Black. First, the guy is 7,3", and is {get this} 500 years old. He is huge, his skin is that zombie-grey type of color, and has quite alot of horns on his head {8 to be exact}. What I'm trying to say is: He's the devil, folks. Also, there is this old british guy from the 1800s. Hes actually quite amusing. There is also this Mike Tyson clone, an ancient Indian {one of the only ones who put up a fight against Damien}, and the Russian guy from Rocky 4. Anyway, this game is really cool, especially on the Dreamcast. My rating: Get it!

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty cool
this game is cool, and is great for tournaments but can get old very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fighting!
Ready 2 Rumble is what Mike Tyson's Punchout was 13 years ago. And it has been that long since the last truely fun boxing game. Pairing today's greatgraphics(at least on Dreamcast)with yesterdays fun equals a great game.

The game has two modes, an Arcade mode and a Championship mode. TheArcade mode is fun when played against another "human" opponent. The 2 player game will give the user more opportunities to taunt, set upfor a combo, and go all out. Most people enjoy this type of fighting, infact everyone should. The Championship mode is for the die-hard playerwho likes to win, win, win. Going into championship mode requires a memorycartridge, and most importantly patience. The road to gold is a long, frustrating, and often dull experience. It is true when you work your wayup to Gold status, strategies have to be used. The user finds out moreabout fighting the computer, really it's just like real boxing(jab, cut thering off, win by decision). While few have the patience to test theirskills against the computer, the die-hard player never really gets thatmuch better especially against a "human" opponent who fights awhole lot different from the computer.

The game has various characters, with interesting backgrounds. We have a retired 21 year old cab drivergoing up against the Devil himself. Each fighter have different attributes, and using them to their right potential is key. Maybe the only bad thingabout the game is the music(endless). But Ready 2 Rumble wins by TKO overany other boxing games. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sega employees wrote the previous reviews
This game is nothing like Spawn. This game is garbage. I own Powerstone, and Spawn for the DC, and they are both waaaaaaaay beter than Heavy Metal Geomatrix!!!!

First of all, there is no cpu controlled partner. This makes it extremely difficult to beat it on one player. On the last 2 levels, the boss has a partner and you have to beat both of them by yourself. In order to beat the game, I had to force a friend to unwillingly play with me.

The arenas for this game are very samll, each stage is just a flat plane. There are no hidden rooms, caves, allyways etc.

The characters move very slowly, and they have a small variety of weapons. There are no power ups for speed or weapon damage.

I am a fan of Heavy Metal magazine so I expected a great game. This just turned out to be a big disoppintment. Shame on you Sega.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fun game with no depth
Heavy Metal Geomatrix has all the things a game needs to be awsome for about an hour:A large selection of high powered weapons and some badass music.Sadly, the game lacks several things that would keep it entertaining beyond that first spin, like complex and varied arenas or characters with unique abilities and play styles.

The actual arenas in this game are all rather compact, with either a hill or a wall to lamely spice things up.They don't have any personality, or fun additions like, say, the obstical filled levels in smash brothers have.It becomes about as dull as you'd expect playing on what's basically the same level over and over.

The characters are similarly generic. There's 4 teams of three fighters, but the teams don't mean anything other than cosmetic differences. The only real distinctions between the characters is whether they're guy, girl, or brute.Girls are fast, Brutes are strong, guys are balanced. Each character DOES have a specific set of starting weapons, but once the match begins you'll quickly use it up or grab a new one anyways. There's no special moves, feel or play style to any of the fighters, you can pretty much do the same stuff with any of them. It's hard to tell if you've even changed characters between matches.

Chaos matrix mode does add some extra enjoyment. You basically cruise around in various arenas made of blocks trying to kill enemies and/or grab keys and then exit before time runs out. Most of these are way too short and easy, but a few actually take place in a large and interesting (though made of blocks) arenas against a challenging assortment of opponents. But unless you feel like replaying them over and over to beat your high scores, they'll get old fast.

If you've already got some good battling games, pick up HMG to add some variation to you and your friends' gaming. But don't expect too much. This game, while certainly not bad, is still just %100 collection filler.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you thought Power Stone was crazy...
...then just wait till you play this.Heavy Metal: Geomatrix is undoubtedly crazier than Power Stone, with better weapons, blood, gore, and great headbanging music. One of the better fighters on the Dreamcast, this is essential for all Dreamcast owners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Explosive No-frills Arena Combat
Explosive.Loud.Action-packed.That's what this Heavy Metal game is, a violent unity of "free-roam" fighters Powerstone and Spawn, backed by an excellently matched bunch of apparently well-known metal-rock bands and superb 60 fps graphics.

What Heavy Metal is not, is "deep".There are basically three modes, two being obvious (the standard arcade mode and a simple Versus mode). The third is an interesting mix of Arcade gameplay with mision objectives and point scores (Arcade is simply a "beat the best finish time" type). But ultimately you're just running and gunning around small 3D arenas, intent on finding that new gun powerup that will allow you to blow up, or enflame, or slice...rather than just kickbox your foe to death.

Still, Heavy Metal Geomatrix is truly Dreamcast-worthy in appearance and speed. And despite relatively simple base mechanics, it can become very tough to take out the AI at higher levels (where they take 2 of the best characters and throw them at you together and with a vengeance).

Overall, the game is highly recommended to fill these two niches in your gaming library: 1) having fun in Versus blowing up your visiting friends, or 2) an ever-ready quick-blast arcade experience in Arcade modes. This kind of game is the exact opposite of a stats-laden sports game or rpg, which means that you won't plan to set aside hours to play it at time. But it may just work out that way...!

4-0 out of 5 stars Delayed, but worth the wait.
The dying Dreamcast system was hardly calling out for another arcade fighting game, but 'Heavy Metal: Geomatrix' could be seen as one of the more interesting ones. It's a go-anywhere 3-D fighter with weapons, much like Capcom's innovative 'Power Stone' series. Players start each match with a default weapon, such as a bazooka, machine gun, or beam sword. The guns are especially cartoony but offer some amusing and destructive effects, plus each has a 'special' feature. Other weapons and items such as jet packs can be picked up, but players must use caution as enemy attacks cannot be blocked, and only one weapon can be held at any one time. Characters in the game range from post-apocalyptic warlords and dominatrix types to bounty hunters and military sergeants. I enjoyed both 'Power Stone' games, so I was easily able to settle into combat. This leads me to the game's biggest fault: it's not that difficult on the default setting. The first few enemies will actually run away from you and into a wall, waiting to be blasted. The action eventually gets heated as you face two enemies at once (with no block button, I remind you), and the difficulty and damage settings can be tweaked. The weapons are nothing new, just BIG, and there's not enough emphasis on hand-to-hand fighting. The graphics and effects in 'Geomatrix' are edgy and colorful, as one would expect of Capcom. If you like 'Heavy Metal', quick fighting games, and a great rock soundtrack, you should check out this little gem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
This game is good for the Wrestling fanatic like me that will play any wrestling game relased.Once you learn how to play this game it gets cool.

3-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A WRESTLING GAME!
This game is one of the most complete WWFgames out their today! It has lots of match modes like triple threat, one on one,tag team, cage, etc. Including a career match. Its kind of like a season were you pick one good wrestler to fight for you for a series of months. You have diffrent match types during that strech. As you win your ranking gets higher on diffrent levels. The more you win the matches get higher and higher. If you win all your mathes you get speacial attributes like cloths, wrestlers ,etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough in this day and age.
Even though the graphics for this version were far smoother than the N64 and PS1 versions of Attitude, a simple graphic upgrade just doesn't cut it. After playing the COMPLETE disappointment that was Royal Rumble, I was hoping that Attitude would be at least a semi-decent improvement over the original Attitudes. But regardless, after playing Smackdown! and WWF Wrestlemania 2000, games that represented wrestling to its fullest on the consoles, Attitude shows that the era of the slow, clunky, overly complicated wrestling game is thankfully over (unless you have the misfortune of playing Acclaim's ECW games.) The controls are slightly less awkward than flying a space shuttle. The graphics, though smooth, are very flat, and with a system like the Dreamcast, there's just no excuse for that. The sound is nice, although the speech is somewhat annoying, and most of the theme songs are two years old (though I still like the Rock's old theme.) Not only that, but half of these guys either aren't around anymore, but have changed so much in two years that it's comical to see them represented here. Acclaim isn't as guilty of putting out garbage as THQ, since Acclaim lost their WWF contract and had to stop making WWF games after Attitude, but Attitude is nothing more than an attempt to sell a wrestling game to people who bought Dreamcast and can't find any good ones (the best, Fire Pro, is only available in Japan. Grr.) I would only recommend this as a option for the wrestling fanatic who has nothnig but a Dreamcast. Otherwise, any of THQ's PS1 and N64 WWF games utterly destroy this one. But of course, they're much newer, so it's not COMPLETELY Acclaim's fault. But for my money, that doesn't matter. Rent once and forget.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alright
This game is alright...it's a very good game for being ruushed like it was, but it could be a lot better. The graphics are good, faces look bad, wrestlers are kinda blocky, and the crowd is a little generic. It has many types of matches...Royal Rumble, hardcore...and you can create your own Pay-Per View. The sound is good, esp. Stone Cold.

It's not a bad game, but rent it first. You'll probably be happy with it, but don't chance it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
This game is great! This game has the best create your own wrestler feature then any other game. The moves a hard at first but you get used to them. The gameplay is slow at times but for the most part it's good. The only other problem is the wrestlers are outdated and don't have some super stars like: The Dudleyz, Hardyz, and Y2J. But dont be discouraged by that...GET THE GAME! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Packed with all the energy and over-the-top moves of a Jackie Chan movie, Power Stone revitalizes the fighting game genre with fully functional 3-D combat environments and frenzied strategy. Face your opponent in a London courtyard and you can hurl café chairs and tables at him before taking him out by swinging around a lamppost. Or fight in a dilapidated shopping mall, and beat your foe down with a giant stuffed teddy bear after tossing him through a storefront window. Each multilevel combat area is stocked with crates, barrels, clubs, even ray guns, and everything can be used as a weapon.

Interactive fighting environments are fun, but what really sets Power Stone apart are the power stones. Collecting all three stones transforms the character into a superbeing, unlocking new and devastating attacks. Since the overall goal of the game is to beat up your opponent, and the superform lets you do the most damage, competition for the stones is fierce.

If you're tired of the standard fighting game formula and want a little more, Power Stone is the game for you. It's a perfect translation of the arcade hit, and the uncomplicated, frantic combat will bring a grin to many a jaded gamer's face. --Mike Fehlauer

If you want a game that you can master in 5 mins with any character then POWER STONE IS IT. I beat the game as I got it once I discovered "the formula"...

I'll list the pros and cons to give you a fair rundown

Pros
1) Characters are unique and fun with personality, i.e. personal story, ending etc (missing from PS2)
2) Backrounds are the BOSS and fully interactive
3) The moves and effects are radical (King Capcom shines here)
4) Fast action
5) Cool Japanese voices

Cons
1) One dimensional fighting sucks as a 3D fighting game!!
2) Weapons make no sense once you know the formula! They just slow you down and make you a prime target for the formula!!

Overall
Overall this is a DISAPPOINTING attempt at a fighting game. The concept is good but the fighting engine is flawed. Powerstone 2 got it right and is a blast, read my review!

5-0 out of 5 stars The craziest 3D fighter game yet!
Capcom goes all out on animation, action, and humor with this 3D fighter game.It is a whole lot better when you play with two people despite the fact their are unlockables in the game. There are also mad moves you can do off poles, walls, on other miscelaneous objects found in the game.I would recommend this game to anyone who likes to play Capcom or Squaresoft games.
