Editorial Review

It seems as if the world's fascination with the Russian-created puzzle game Tetris will never end. Hasbro Interactive and Atari have introduced yet another challenging version of the shape- shifting classic Tetris. The new format follows rules similar to the classic game. However, there are now new objects (sticky blocks and cascades) to contend with. The sticky blocks add a clever twist to the action, since they connect themselves to other pieces of the same color when placed next to one another. These resulting sticky blocks are bigger and less mobile than regular blocks. As in the original Tetris, clearing a line of blocks will often result in a chain reaction that can cause other blocks to fall. At this point, the game can get quite frantic since these blocks often end up creating matches that trigger more chain reactions. It's a dizzying experience--but that's the charm of the game.

Players can choose from marathon mode (a single-player sequential game), two-player competition, or puzzle-style levels that require you to clear prepositioned blocks in a certain amount of time. The new elements make this updated game more challenging than the original, yet The Next Tetris retains all the charm of the game that started it all. Even diehard Tetris fans will have a difficult time finding fault with this game, since it includes a faithful reproduction of the original version as well. --Carrie Bell

Pros:

  • Utilizes dual shock analog controller
  • Sticky blocks add new dimension to gameplay
Cons:
  • More expensive than the original title

4-0 out of 5 stars Addictive
The sound effect of the blocks falling is great, however the music selections can use a little work.Otherwise the game is fun and addictive as it always was. There is a board where the blocks attach themselves to others of the same color -- a new twist.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Tetris-- what else can you say?
The most addictive puzzle game of all time. The "new" version borrows some touches from some of the other falling block games to good effect. It enhances game play, and adds new dimensions to the dreams that I invariably have about this game after I've played it way too much. One small gripe. Considering the miniscule amount of space that this simple little game must take up on the disc, couldn't they have thrown in an hour of quality music, or background options with every major Michaelangelo painting? I can't shake the feeling that I paid a chunk of change for a bunch of empty space. Still, it IS Tetris, and now I can play it on my Playstation. Everything else is secondary...

5-0 out of 5 stars fun with flipping
My husband and I enjoy playing this game against each other and we really enjoy flipping the puzzles to confuse one another. It is a fun and time consumming game.We catch ourselves playing for hours at a time, laughingand moving with the pieces.I would recomend this game to anyone who likesa challange.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better that 64 tetris
Altho' I haven't made it past the seventh level yet--that's seems to be my sticking point--I don't get anywhere near as frustrated as with the other tetris game. I like playing two people. It was a fun shock to have my boardgo spastic when the other player cleared lines. I like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very addictive! Great Game!
I bought this game yesterday and my husband and I played it for over 5 hours. We had to tear ourselves away just to go to bed! Very challanging and fun! The best part is we get to play against each other! You can alsoplay alone! A must have for playstation! ... Read more

Editorial Review

What's more fun than a barrel of opposable-thumbed simians? How about the silly--butchallenging--Ape Escape? While not the first game to offer enhanced control with Sony'sdual-stick analog controller, Ape Escape is the first game to require either an analog or dual shock controller to play. That requirementensures that players will have full control of their hero, Spike. One stick moves Spike in any direction, while the other swings his monkey-catching devices.

In Ape Escape, a circus monkey named Specter stumbles upon a scientist's prototypeintelligence-enhancing helmet, turning him into an evil monkey genius. As Spike, the professor's youngfriend, you must travel through time to clean up all of the monkeys Specter has sent back in his attempt torepopulate the world. If that's not enough to make you laugh, then chasing his goofy monkey minions asthey scurry from your clutches will certainly tickle your funny bone. You'll discover a variety of gadgets tohelp you in your quest, including monkey radar, a slingshot, and a propeller for flying. Spanning 25 hugelevels, Ape Escape is approachable for novices, and offers added challenges for veteran gamers. One such challenge is to lure a dinosaur near a rocky cliff, and then jar the monkey off his back and intoyour net. Note: no monkeys were harmed in the creation of this game. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Unique control scheme brings new challenge to the PlayStation
  • Massive game has plenty of replay value
Cons:
  • Unique control scheme requires some ramp-up time

4-0 out of 5 stars WORST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED!!!!!!
This game is definitely the worst game I have ever played, and believe me, I've played hundreds!! This game is soooooo boring and I don't understand it at all!!!! The graphics are blocky and the music is sooo annoying!! I set this game aside as soon as I played it for five minutes!!!! This game is NOT worth the money! If you want a good game, I'd recomend "Final Fantasy X" expecially, or "Harvest Moon."

5-0 out of 5 stars Too much fun
I was bored one day, and was watching my mother-in-law play Ape Escape 2.Looked like it was fun, and less stressful than some of my other games that I like tend to be, and borrowed her copy of the first Ape Escape.

It starts out simple enough. You catch a few slow monkeys and learn your gadgets thru tutorials. But then it gets difficult. My 3 year old daughter loves to sit on the bed with spare control in hand and help catch monkeys. The graphics are nice and the storyline is fun.The gadgets are cool too.

Only one complaint, and that is that the camera angle loves to change when you are at the most challenging parts.Anytime you need to use your flying thingy and it's for going somewhere difficult, the camera changes and you can't see where your destination is.It gets a bit annoying after you die a few times, but I did eventually get past the frustration and finished the game. This game is great for young kids and adults alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars MONKEYS !!!!!!!!
What can be more fun than running around chasing monkeys? the are plenty of levels and gadgets to play with. The only downside is that the paddle boat is impossible to control in my opinion. Each monkey has its own charateristics and weapons. just trying to run up and snag the monkey doesn't always work. special gadgets must be used first. Pretty much run around the world getting rid of monkeys using gadgets. The game is pretty explanatory but is loads of platform fun. also includes minigames that can kill some time with friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just one more ape...
Ape Escape consists of more than 20 3D levels based on a variety of time zones. To clear a level, Spike (played by you) must capture a set number of monkeys. After filling that quota, you must access the next level. Reaching the monkeys will require you to jump, sneak, swim, climb and fly through a variety of situations. To help you on your way, you are given a net and a lightsaber type stun club.Throughout the course of the game, Spike will collect six additional gadgets. In addition to providing the means of completing future levels, returning to previous levels with new gadgets will allow Spike to capture any monkeys he left behind. In addition to monkeys, each level has tokens to collect. Collecting enough tokens will open minigames. This game gets addicting pretty fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Cute!
I bought this for my four-year old and he liked it.I guess the idea of catching monkeys really appealed to him.I tried it and I liked it.The game is fun and challenging.Only, it is a bit fast paced when catching the little fur-balls.Fun for all!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bust A Move 2
This game is hours of fun. There is no plot to the game, but who cares! There is hours of challenge action for people to play against each other.A great game for kids.No violence, nice cute animals.Highly reccommend

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Video game, but Playstation version has drawbacks
Although I enjoy playing this game, it has some major drawbacks. You start with a grid of colored balls and shoot balls into the grid. When 3 or more balls of the same color touch, they explode. It's fun. But there are notenough options. You can play 2-player, but you have to accept all the ballsthe other player explodes. They are automatically put into your grid. I'dlike to see other options and other kinds of contests, such as time trials. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good fun and semi-addictive
Definitely a great game for true casino gamers. There's about 20 different games to play, although some are very similar (e.g. different slot machines).I especially love the Video Poker game called Deuces Wild.

Some of my complaints:
(1)It takes too long to bet, play, and collect winnings.Annoying visualization effects are standable at first, but get frustrating after seeing "Kyle Wins" flash on the screen time after time.
(2)The rating system is great overall, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to move up in Keno (duh...it's impossible to win!)
(3)The cards are unreadable when the "camera" isn't zoomed in on that part of the table.

All things considered though, the things wrong with the game are minimal making it a good deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst gambling game ever
If you want to be frustrated, play this game. Sometimes you can't even see the cards you are playing!!(blackjack) The betting interface is also terrible. The only reason I gave it one star is for the selection of games and the opening animation. If you wan't to see for yourself, PLEASE rent it first (that is why I am writing this, so you don't make the same mistake I did). Or, better yet, buy Golden Nugget, at least that has real poker. You have been warned!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Gambling with a limit?
CP2000 is not what I had hoped or expected. The game has many games to choose from yet it does not have some that you would think. There is only video poker no table poker like in other games(Golden Nugget) this is a badthing because you can make a ton of money bluffing but you can not make apenny bluffing on a machine. The slot machines are a joke they are slow andlame looking in fact the whole game is slow. Slow to load slow to deal thecards it gets old quick. The "coach" is more like a smart alickfriend that tells you what you should have done after you do it, not muchhelp. The game also limits you to the stakes you can bet when you firststart out. Slots only .50( come on every one knows that you cant make anymoney on anything less that $1 slot machine) and 21 only $100 max same forother games with a loan of $2000 I guess that keeps you from losing it allat once; or simply betting it all and if you win saving it, and trying itagain in order to get a ton of money it seems kiddie to me. I mean come onthis is gambling right? If I blow it all on one spin of the wheel thenearly night for me. But who knows? This game could have been better for aslong as the PS platform has been around. If you like gambling games CP2000is not bad; but it is no better than any other platform gambling gameseither. ... Read more
