5-0 out of 5 stars Very suitable for the novice
I'm not up to snuff when it comes to chess games--or chess for that matter--but I have found this version of Chessmaster more than suitable for my ability. One has the choice of playing a number of Grandmasters, and there are a slew of tutorials to assist the novice chess player, including one devoted to some 1000+ openings. But in the end, this is only a computer simulation, and to truly enjoy and understand the game, one has to play against other people. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Purchased this along with Logitech's WingMan Force 3D joystick and it was a waste of a lot of money. The range of motion required to make the basic up, down, left, right moves just isn't there. Its either the software, the joystick or both.I would have been better off trying to buy one of the old arcade machines and would have at least been able to play it.

Don't waste your money!!

5-0 out of 5 stars arcade on your p.c.
Excellant game!!!!!!!If you were a teen in the 80's this is for you its like going to the arcades of years back. It's got pac-man and ms. pac-man ,galaxian ITs great!!!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch out on Win 98 w/DirectX 8.1
Even though I have 256 Mb, I have found this one to be quite flaky under Windows 98.It randomly fails to load games properly under DirectX 8.1, which then procede to eat system resources until the system crashes.MS has been unable to resolve the problem (and, the first time, the registration # it gave me was faulty and they wanted me to pay for support, had to re-install and get a new # before I could even get them to acknowledge my existance w/o a credit card...).Even when the games do work, they are generally poor adaptations. For much better emulation, get MAME and download the original game ROMS at www.mame.dk.Sorry for the sour grapes.Expect that those running later versions of Windows or earlier versions of DirectX might be in better shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arcade started from the classicgames.
If you grew up in the 80's you can't go wrong with these games. These games were the best and highly rated back then.I remember going to the arcade centers waiting in line for a turn to play theses games. The classic arcade games are the original start of arcade games trend,You have to respect that, if it wasn't for theses original games that started the arcade trend where would we be. I only play the classic games and nothing else. I have nothing against the new age games today, even though they are more enchanced, but there are just to many buttons and gadget you have to use to play the game, I can't keep up with
all those different buttons to play. I just like it simple. Its so much fun. I love the classic games and finally found them on a cd rom.

Amazon.com Product Description

Golf Resort Tycoon lets players choose from a variety of different environments--including a forest, a desert oasis, a mountainous setting, a tropical paradise island, or an autumn wooded terrain--with which to build their resorts. Each area offers its own unique challenges and benefits. Forest levels feature the highest traffic, and will have the greatest potential for success. Desert courses are among the most challenging to build and maintain, but they're also very lucrative. Mountain courses require the player to incorporate the surrounding terrain into a competitive and beautiful resort. Island resorts require innovative strategies due to their small size. Finally, autumn courses have the benefit of attracting golfers due to their stunning, ever-changing environment.

As the course designer, players have to create courses that are attractive, economical, and profitable while keeping the guests happy and maximizing profits. To assist in this goal, players can set costs and organize events that will attract more golfers. Additionally, players can increase the traffic to their entertainment destinations by adding features to the resort, such as course hazards, putting greens, flower gardens, pro and rental shops, food and beverage stands, and even a swimming pool. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Head across the street for something better...
This title came out about the same time Sim Golf appeared. I went with the latter, but always wondered what this game was about. Years later, with the revival version, I decided to find out. Needless to say, I was not impressed.

The main focus of the game is money and how to make it off of the course. That would have been great, if there were pre-made holes you would add on to the course rather than being forced to make half-baked ones. Just drop in a design, starting with a cheap but boring one, and move up to copies of the greater holes in golf, which cost more or require more status to earn. Would have been fine.

The only thing you can do with course construction is lay out fairways, tees, and greens according to a limited set of options. Hazards amount to bunkers and ponds. There is no real way to use the terrain that is present when you start a game, because it won't let you build a fairway over existing terrain features. It will also level out a sculpted terrain at times.

If you can turn a blind eye to this, you are left with a basic business sim. In short, the whole thing about this being a golf business sim is essentially meaningless.

If a remake is ever made, consulting even the most rudementary book on golf course architecture might be a good idea rather than just pushing some idea of what a course is supposed to be like on the player.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok but still BAD
I find this game interesting but not that fun. Activition did a great job on other games, but on this one crashed and burned. Activition found a fascinating topic but no real story line. I played Ski Resort Tycoon before but this one was different. I don't know why but I found that Ski Resort Tycoon more interesting. You don't see Golf Tycoon having Movie Theaters. I think this time Activision. was focosing more on the elderly folk. Other than that I think this game was..........ok.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very very bad game
...This game is very boring, it is the worst game I have ever played, the money is so slow. The people so weird, and the graphics are the worst in the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Serious Review
This game is very fun. When you first get it I would suggest leaving it on the first night to get a lot of money because each item is obscenely expensive. Also, I recommend the island course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too sloooow, too repetitive
The concept is interesting, but the application falls far short of the mark. The gameplay is very slow on an older machine, and even on 1.6 Pentium is poor. The golf course design applications are vey crude, especially in comparision to the golf architect functions in golf simulations like Jack Nicklaus golf or Tiger Woods. In addition, those products give you the opportunity to play the course.

The challenges are very easy provided you have the patience to wait for enough money to come in for building the course, and you don't mind endlessly chasing gophers. This is a poor imitation of good products like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beam Me Up, Scotty!
Being a Star Trek fan and wanting a pinball computer game, I figured I could satisfy both needs with this purchase.I was wrong.I recently upgraded my computer to Windows XP.STAR TREK PINBALL IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP.Some older computer games still play fine on my computer, but this game will NOT play at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too much too it.
Computer pinball games have usually been no replacement for the real thing. Going back to the days of Atari Video Pinball, which was fun, the video pinball games haven't evolved much since then.

Star Trek Pinball is no exception. It is fun, but the shelf life isn't very long. You will install it, play it a few times and then forget it.

The graphics are good but there isn't much that Star Trek can add to video pinball.

Overall, as a Trek collector, I would pick this up, but don't expect to play it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When i first got this game,I thought it would stink. But when I played it I knew it was the best game ever!!! Dont just stop and think just get it!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you get this game you would want to chat about it all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S:Sometimes it can get very annoying.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I got this game 2 years ago for PC, being a fan of all the genesis games, and it was nice to see a departure from the horrible isometric perspective of Sonic 3D Blast. But once you've been playing it for a while things start popping up that are almost impossible to ignore, which sends the game to an early death:

1.Poor graphics. All the characters look like they're from Crash Bandicoot 1! cubed hands, MASSIVE pixels, each stage 'appearing' on the horizon...

2.Skidding and controls. In a race against the computer once you run into a corner that's IT. In order to turn around you have to turn a whole 360 degrees in what seems like slo-motion. Also, especially during the rain and snow, skidding becomes sure a pain and the only way to overcome it (unless you're Amy or Robotnic) is to double-jump, fly or glide!

3.Music. THE LYRICS ARE KILLING ME!! 'Livin in the city, ya know, ya got to survive... ya got to keep that dream alive, where ev-rything is dream, and fan-ta-seee!!' Had to turn the sound off sometimes

4.Egg-robo. Why would ANYONE want to use him as a character?

5.Length. Far too easy. And once you get supersonic the only way to keep him for future games is to save once you have 6 emeralds and then collect the seventh one each time:P Able to clock in hours.

6.Only five tracks!

7.Bugs galore. Whether it be gaps in the scenery or on the track (there's one loop where, if you press against the side while in a roll, you fly out of the stage and exit the game boundary) or sticky keys.

Balloon race: What? no battle mode! Balloon race is fun with a friend for a while, then gets extremely tedious once you're both searching for the last balloon hidden in some obscure place.

Pros:

1.Secret characters. Apart from Egg-robo the secr4et characters are really good racers, each an upgrade of their 'real' counterparts. The tails doll rules! Supersonic is super everything:)

2.Original racing options. like 'reverese' and 'tag'.

3.Open paths. Lots of shortcuts to learn.

4.Weather. Only racing game ever to have random weather effects!

Overall, if you want a slight sonic diversion that's low on replay value, fun for a while but with lots of problem areas, consider buying this game. Just turn off the speakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just "WOW"
You know, when I first picked up this game, when I was about 2 years old, I was a die-hard fan, and to this day, at 13, I still am. I found this game last month, layered in dust, because I was going through "Sonic Withdrawl", and remembered how hard it was when I was 2. I hesitated at first but decided to play it again. I was blown away! With an unlockable course and 6 unlockable characters, I could'nt put it down! I already beat it and unlocked Super Sonic O.O.

This game is a MUST MUST MUST get for your Sonic die-hard fan!!!

The graphics... not exactly "awesome" but it was great for the time!

But either way; this is the ultimate Sonic PC game I've ever played.

And, if you want to give your child a "Sonic Holiday" I stongly suggest you buy Sonic CD, also, BUT Sonic CD is NOT comatible with Windows XP! (Trust me: I've tried)

5-0 out of 5 stars HOLY CRAP IS THIS AWESOME!!!
Hey everybody. The first day that I picked this up and played this on the PC, I was just truley blown away. I look back on it now, and it blows me even MORE. The graphics are completley polished, it's compatible with the new Windows Xp operating system, has most EVERY Sonic character in it, such as Super Sonic and Amy, the two-player split-screen rocks, and you can even play with a friend(s) in a network! HOW COOL IS THAT!
I'm telling you, the first chance you get, BUY THIS GAME!

5-0 out of 5 stars first 3D sonic
This game was one of the first ones I ever played. It doeshave only five tracks but there are so many different paths you can choose I beaten it over and over. One track has a weak point that alows you to cut accross half of the track (it is in the river). There is even a cool reverse time attack where you run in reverse. there is even a time attack to find and burst 5 ballons. my favorite characters are metal sonic, metal knuckles (drool, drool I love this one), and super sonic (impossible to sink) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a great game
I don't really play a lot of computer games, but when I was younger I really loved this game. It's one of the greatest games I ever played. And still, I sometimes check it out. Try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Game!
I really liked this game. The graphics are great as is the sound track. The game play is hard without being too hard. You have a little bit of everything; shooting, escaping and puzzle solving. But most of all, it was really fun.The plot is that Andy, a ten year old boy, has to rescue his dog from a time warp that takes him right to the heart of darkness (a pretty scary thought for a kid who's afraid of the dark).Although it sounds tame, it is geared to young teens and above since there is some animated violence. But the bottom line is that the game is fun to play and a treat to see the graphics and hear the music. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A VERY addictive game for everyone
I bought this game at toys R us for twenty dollars and could not be happier. The game has wonderful sound effects and music. I hate having to stop playing it for sleep and eating. Actually, sometimes I dont sleep. That is how addictive this game is. Way to go atari!!!!. I highly reccomend this game to scrabble lovers and haters who want to become scrabble lovers. Believe me you will ! BUY THIS KICK BUTT GAME !!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners and Experts Alike
This is a great version of the game. Not only does it allow a solitaire version, but also provides play against other people, and the computer at various levels of expertise.

The real plus here is that it teaches as well as challenges. The games not only provides helpful hints and suggestions, but also rates and critiques your game. There are also several mini-games to help you hone your skills.

The graphics are well done and your computer opponent even has a sense of humor.

The hardcopy Official Dictionary is also an added bonus.

Highly recommended for Scrabble lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The cure for my Scrabble withdrawal
I used to play Scrabble quite often with my parents when I was a teen, but since going through college and getting married, I haven't found a whole lot of people who like the game anymore. Thus, I got this game. The graphics and sound are incredible, but not really necessary.Especially unwelcome is the taunting of the little blob who is your computer opponent - he laughs when you play a bad word and celebrates upon playing even lame words himself. However, none of that matters, as the game play itself is fantastic.I have improved my game tenfold by reviewing my games with the computer to find out what I could have done better, and by playing the mini-games, which help you learn 2- and 3-letter words, bingoes, suffixes and prefixes and much more.I've had the game a month and I've played 60+ games. If someone wanted to join the Scrabble circuit, this would be a great way to learn. For more than one player, however, I'd stick with the good ol' board version (deluxe, of course...).

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Someone in the human factors department at Hasbro was in a cranky mood when they wrote the requirements for this game. The game itself is rather nice, but they strapped the user with several limiting constraints.First, the CD must always be in the drive in order to play. After removing and replacing the CD a hundred times, and misplacing it, I find it inconvenient. Also, you must take turns at the keyboard, so you can't see your letters in advance of your turn.Perhaps if you play a game against another player on MSN gaming zone, or if you buy a second license (to play on a second system over a network), and if you keep the other CD in that system also, maybe (stress maybe) you can see your letters while the other person is playing. If you want to play on a laptop (eg while travelling) bring your CDROM drive and CD, and incur the extra battery usage. So in my opinion this is basically a solitaire game to be played on a desktop only, if you don't mind tying up the CD drive.Smaller complaints include the intense graphics which take time to load, the board graphic which, although pleasing,
can't be controlled for sizing - it fills the entire screen and can't be minimized. Also the customer support email - they don't seem to reply. If you want to get an idea of what playing is like, picture the board game and having to return your letters and give up your chair on each turn.My wife and I play so much, our intent was to enhance the experience.Except for practicing when alone, we were wrong :-(

3-0 out of 5 stars Indeed it is addictive
In my own case, the sound was very distracting, and I had to turn it off, but those more used to video games will not find that a problem. I do enjoy the flexibility of being able to play against the computer, solitaire, or with another player.

One feature which I find very annoying is the "referee challenge." There are words which are not in the game's dictionary - enter one, legitimate though it is, and the "referee challenge" makes one lose a turn and be penalised. There is no way to challenge the referee, and my attempts to set up a supplementary dictionary failed. The attempt, in fact, disabled the ability to set options.

It is worthwhile for a Scrabble lover, but could use some revisions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but a goodie
I know this isn't your huge graphic, massive sound, intesive adrinaline game; but, for what it is its great.I love this game.I played it as a kid at the arcade, and it was hard to find then.Maybe its nostalgia, but I think it has its perks.Yes it is like pacman, but no its not the same. There are hardness levels, it has multiple badies, and its just fun.No blood and guts( I actually like stealth and blood games), and its "old school".Know that, and you'll enjoy it as I have, and am.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bearing Away
All in all, classic video games have truly been a part of our arcades for decades beyond imagination. Yet, there are some video games that really seem to set in the opposite direction. One game from Atari, really was one of those games now. Crystal Classics enjoyed moderate but not die hard success in the 80's. The game is a bit like a knock off to Pac Man, as you guide a bear throughout a maze-like castle, grabbing gems on the floor, and trying to avoid bees, and ghoulish villians to garner points. All in all, the game was fair, but this version is really not one worth purchasing. I strongly suggest you buy the Atari Anniversary Edition or the deluxe edition which includes over 80 different games, including Crystal Castles. This version of the game on CD-ROM isn't worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 8 years of fun
I have loved this piece of software as much as any I have owned. NYT Crosswords from 1986-1994 are in this package. While, as the last reviewer pointed out, there are typos that will frustrate you, the brilliance of the NYT crossword puzzles shine. I have spent many a happy hour and only a few frustrated minutes on the puzzles.

This package can be found relatively cheaply and provide many hours of enjoyment. I would have given 5 stars except for the typos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with Errors
The available features are very handy, and the program allows you to zoom in and out which is helpful for those of us not blessed with 20/20 vision.Navigation is simple and intuitive.Overall, the program is pretty much what you'd expect in a crossword puzzle.

The most disturbing problem is the extraordinary number of typos present! Many times, two letters are transposed in the puzzle and you will be told that your answers are incorrect; to have the program count your efforts as a "success," you must know the _REAL_ answer and then play around with the letters to make it match the program's _incorrect_ answer.I was quite disappointed by this particular flaw. While I have experienced the same problem with other crossword software titles, I had hoped that a product associated with the New York Times would have placed a higher priority on accuracy. It's disheartening to see such a fine paper lend their name to a clearly inferior product. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to pass the time.
I got this as a b-day/Christmas gift.I usually play for less than a hour at a time, but oh, what fun! There are only 6 games here--Asteroids, Centipede, Pong, Missile Command, Super Breakout, and Tempest--and they play in both retro and enhanced versions. And once installed, you don't need the CD to play it, because it stays on your hard drive!I just wish it had more games!

AN OBSERVATION OF NOTE:In Asteroids and Centipede, sometimes when the UFO's or Spider appear, the sound suddenly gets twice as loud, and doesn't stop until either you shoot the thing or it fades of screen. If I vaguely remember right (It's been what, uh, 20-25 years?!!), I think this unintentional error was in the original stand-up arcade machines themselves, and yet it's "captured" here on this CD!(Again, I assume unintentional.)Don't let this "effect" throw you off.You may want to turn down the volume when playing these two games, especially if you're sensitive to such changes in sound.Have fun!

Progam may work well using keyboard, but I prefer to use the joystick, and game plays very choppy.

When I first played the games on this CD-ROM, I thought I had travelled through a time warp back into the arcades of the early 80's!It's great to be able to play your favorite arcade games that you once played years ago (I think I'm telling my age!).I got lots of enjoyment out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun!!
My 2 sons(14 and 16) and I love playing this game.In the summer we always try to have a study time of a couple of hours every day and this is always their first choice for one of the hours. It's not like sitting down with a book, but they do learn things accidently.I wish there were a Jeopardy structured just for school questions, but this is still great.

4-0 out of 5 stars What Computer Game Is Close To Perfection?
The second edition of Jeopardy is a very good computer simulation of the TV game show. The graphics and gameplay are outstanding. The bonus features, such as a sample contestant exam and brief interviews with Alex Trebek, are a nice touch. However, even though I've only played the game a half dozen times, a couple of the categories have already been repeated. In addition, it's frustrating when you type in the correct answer but, because of a minor spelling error, the answer is incorrect. I've also noticed that, in Final Jeopardy, my computer opponents ALWAYS bet their entire winnings.Despite these very minor complaints, I found Jeopardy to be consistently enjoyable to play.I can't wait until I've won enough games to qualify for the tournament of champions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very FUN
This game is very fun. I love watching it on television. I was just so happy when I got it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ever....
Seems that people hate this game, I dont think so. It is the best version of Jeopardy yet. It has many more features, for a very cheap price.

Thanks, John ... Read more
