Editorial Review

Most attempts to tamper with the basic gameplay of Tetrishave fallen flat on their faces, but Tetris Plus is actually adecent take on the timeless classic. You can tackle a basic solo game ofTetris, challenge a friend in two-player mode, or go directly tothe best portion of the game: puzzle mode.

In puzzle mode, playerscontrol blocks as they descend from the top to the bottom of the screen. As they fall, you can spin blocks so that they land next tocorresponding colors at the bottom of the screen. Gameplay is just likethe original only with a few major twists. The bin that holds the piecesat the bottom of the screen starts out partially filled, while a littleprofessor character climbs on top of the stack. Your job is to clearlines of blocks so that the professor can reach the exit at the bottomof the bin before a spiked ceiling smacks him in the head. Two playerscan also duke it out in puzzle mode, sending cleared lines to theiropponent's bin. This isn't the best version of Tetris we've everplayed, but it does still manage to offer a lot of entertainment for itslow price. --T. Byrl Baker

  • Several types of play
  • Good two-player mode

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Tetris with a twist
Well, almost. The developers added a few new twists, the most interesting of which is the puzzle mode. Each puzzle level begins with the professor standing on a different pattern of blocks. You've got to clear the blocks out from under him to get him to the bottom. If you don't figure out the right way to solve this puzzle, he climbs to the top of the blocks you're stacking up. The game's over when the professor and the descending spiked ceiling collide. This version of the game is entertaining and even challenging, although after a while you begin to wonder why you're trying to rescue a guy who insists on climbing to his death. Other new additions include an edit mode that lets you create and save your own puzzles. A split-screen mode enables two people to play Tetris at the same time without competing against one another. In the regular VS mode, you can still play the computer or a friend. As with most new puzzle games, you can send blocks to your opponents screen when you clear a certain amount from your own -- in this case, two rows of blocks cleared from your screen means two rows of blocks sent to your opponent. If you like Tetris and you1re looking for a familiar, addictive game, this is the answer. Tetris Plus hasn't revolutionized puzzle games, but it's still fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Tetris sequel
Tetris became an instant classic when it was packaged with the Game Boy in 1989. But the most interesting thing about the game becoming so successful is the fact that it spawned so many sequels - each of which was unique in its own way. One of these sequels was Tetris Plus, in which the objective of the game was to save a professor from being smashed by a spiked ceiling, rather than scoring lines like in traditional Tetris games. How does this change of pace work out for the series? Read on and see.

PROS:
-The graphics here are much better than those in the Game Boy game of the same name.
-In addition to the new "rescue the professor" mode which is the main attraction of the game, there is the classic Tetris mode you should know and love.
-Like in most Tetris titles, there's a two-player mode (WELL worth checking out.)

CONS:
-The music, while very good, isn't nearly as catchy as the classical Russian music featured in the original Game Boy game.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a fine addition to the Tetris library. If you're a fan of puzzle games, then Tetris Plus is well worth checking out. Sure, it never got the recognition and popularity that the original did, but it's still excellent. Don't pass it by if you're a Playstation owner.

You want weird? Look no further than Oddworld: Abe'sOddysee. Mild-mannered factory worker Abe has discovered that hisemployers at Rupture Farms are planning to use his fellow Mudokons asthe main ingredient in their latest product, Mudokon Pops. Like anydecent Mudokon, Abe aims to rescue his peers. He also is determined toseek justice in his battle to bring down the corrupt Rupture Farms. Youhelp Abe carry out his heroic duties by possessing enemies, participating in action sequences worthy of an Indiana Jonesflick, and talking to fellow Mudokons using the game's impressive"gamespeak" feature, which allows multiple characters to communicatewith each other using your control pad.

The graphics in Abe's Oddyssee convey a unique personality, whichis often lacking in platform action games. Still, a few pretty gameenvironments will not distract you from the devious puzzles scatteredthroughout the game. Fortunately, you never run out of lives inOddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Instead, Abe rematerializes immediatelyafter you "die" and the game continues from the last checkpoint youreached. This approach encourages exploration, which you'll want to doanyway since this is one of the most beautiful 2-D games we've seen.--T. Byrl Baker

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible game!!!
Oddworld Abe's Oddysee is the most overrated game on the PS1! Let me tell you why it's so bad. For starters, it's main selling-point is humor, and this ''humor'' is mostly made out of repetitive and boring fart jokes. Second...it's insainly dificult! You can't fight back. So this means you have to run away every time a bad guy sees you. The frustation doubles when you consider that you die after getting shot once. To top it all off the story is supposed to make you root for Abe. (the main character) But do you? NO!! Because he's extremly stupid and unlikable like the rest of his race! (Abe is trying to save them from becomeing food.) I say they deserve it. this is a bad game folks, very bad. Oh...and the voice overs are bad to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very challenging game
This game requires skill, luck and intelligence to solve all the puzzles in the game. It's a good thing to have infinite lives, but it's annoying to start over and over when you die. I highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes a challenge every now and then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oddworld=Funworld
I remember hearing about the Oddworld series when it first came out, and from what I heard a lot of people seemed to like it. But I didn't really think about it too much, however a couple days ago I got this game as a gift. I have to say, this is definitely one of the most innovative games out there. To me it's like a cross between Metal Gear Solid (because of the sneaking around) and Earthworm Jim (because of the weirdness). The story is amusing yet original, and it's interesting how things turn out for Abe (the main character) throughout the game. I won't get into any details about the story, don't want to spoil anything. The control is superb, as well is the music and the overall sound. The gameplay and graphics however, are the true highlights of this game. In the game, Abe is able to use weapons, sort of. However he doesn't have one throughout the game, the only way he can get them is through grenade machines (which only pump out one grenade at a time) or if he possesses a mind of a Slig, which are the only enemies that have guns. You are able to possess their minds through a kind of ritual chanting, you can control them however you want. You are also able to talk to fellow Mudokans (a tribe that Abe is from) that you have to save, and that's the whole point of the game is to save them but you have to be very sneaky to do it. Trust me it's not as easy as it sounds. What's cool is Abe doesn't just die, he regenerates. The problem is sometimes he regenerates at places you had the most trouble with, and you have to go all through it again. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on the Playstation console, the FMV's are flawless, no grainy pictures whatsoever. When you are controlling Abe, the environment is 2-D, but even then the graphics are still awesome and have a slight 3-D element. When you go into lifts and such, the game will change to 3-D, especially when you're in the bucket-like lifts or whatever. The only complaint I have about this game is it's EXTREMELY challenging, this game might seem suitable for little kids but trust me it's too hard for them. The person who said this game is too easy is lying, the guy never beat the game because this game is NOT EASY! There are difficult puzzles such as leading the Mudokans to safe portals and controlling enemies to your advantage. This game only has four types of enemies (scrabs, paramites, sligs, and slogs) but they're still a pain in the neck. The puzzles require perfect timing, constantly. This game is not forgiving at all and neither were the people who made it. It requires an excellent amount of patience, which I happen to have very little of. Either way, anyone who loves challenging (not to mention frustrating) games will definitely love this one. Regardless of the frustration factor, I highly recommend this game to any video gamer.

2-0 out of 5 stars fustrating
If you like games were you have to do everything over and over a thousand times before proceeding to the next area just to do that a thousand times more than this game is for you. But I don't consider that very fun. The controls are easy however and the game can be amusing and addictive at times but I certainly would not consider it very fun to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Times Ahead
I wasted many, many hours of sleep back in college with this game. It reminded me quite a bit of Tomb Raider, but I found it to be much moe fun than any of the Tomb Raider series.

The premise is deceptively simple--you must rescue 99 of your fellow Mudokons from becming canned ham. There are enough puzzles and traps to keep things hopping for a long time to come.
There are a number of special actions (such as disarming bombs) that are hard to consistenty master, but its worth the effort if you ccan master ihem.

I'd advise getting the strategy guide as well. It'll save you some grey hairs and bald spots. ... Read more

Yo, DJ wannabes: mix your mad medley of music by using this creativity tool for thePlayStation. Don't mistake this disc for a game--it's a song creator that acts as a 24-track mixing machine.

But there are limitations to this hip tool--namely memory space, which on the PlayStation is scant at best.Still, the disc itself contains over 1,500 pre-recorded musical riffs and over 3,000 instrument sounds for youto mix and match as you like. Once the basic music is laid down, players can tinker with the sounds, addingeffects such as reverb. In addition, the MTV Music Generator enables budding artists to samplemusic from their own audio CDs, but this is where the memory problem comes into play, limiting yoursamples to mere seconds.

No prior knowledge of music theory or editing is required to play with this disc, and when using thepre-recorded music snippets, which are varied and numerous, the resulting songs can be quite amazing. While this piece of software may be better suited for a PC with a fat hard disk full of storage space,MTV Music Generator is a completely original title for the PlayStation, and it manages to cleverlyuse the system's capability to play music in a unique way. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Easy to operate--no music experience or editing required
  • One of the only discs for the PlayStation that encourages creativity
  • Much fuller content than other music tools aimed at younger children
Cons:
  • Limited memory may frustrate users who want to sample their personal music collection

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Get Any Better Than This!!
I've had this game since January of 2000 and still play it regularly. I, like everyone else here, appreciate that Playstation finally came out with something where you can be creative. Very minimal music knowledge is neccessary for this game. I have created literally hundreds of songs on here and am not the least bit disappointed in its performance or sound. Although, I do agree that the samples take up too much space. I don't even use that option. Hey, no one mentioned the Jam Session part! If you have a multi-tap, 4 controllers and 3 other friends, it gets quite interesting!! Buy this game. I swear it's worth every penny!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Music Creation
I fell in love with this game because of its simple interface.Memorize a few button presses and you can be putting songs together in no time.Pick from hundreds of melodies, bass lines, drum parts, sound effects, and percussion samples and paste them together to make a song. It's that easy. You can even create your own riff if you've got the patience for it.Then you can even create your own music video to along with your song.
This game did not recieve as much attention as it should have, but I strongly reccomend it.The only two flaws are the slowdown that occurs from time to time, especially during the video editing, and the songs take up an enormous amount of space on your memory cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars got it good
i got it quick and in great shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service
I want to tell you first of all that when I ordered this program I made the mistake of not specifying what platform. I didn't realize that I was suppose to order for the pc and that it was advertising for the playstation. When I received it I got a playstation version. The people at this company are so caring that I sent it back after calling them and even though they didn't advertise for the pc version they located one in their back stock and sent it to me immediately. What service!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hecka Cool Game
This game is a lot of fun to play and you will become addicted quickly. Create your "own" tunes with many riffs and sounds to choose from.Better yet, create your own sounds (requires a lot of practice). If you want more metal in your tunes, you will have to create and/or adjust the limited ammount provided, but once you get the hang of it---you will be a star. Burn your own CDs and introduce your friends to the newest sound around. They'll freak when you tell them who the artist is---you!Have a jammin time with MTV Music Generator. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!
I am a die-hard Spyro fan who is really into role-playing games. This is probably the best and I mean the BEST game ever made for the Playstation 1! It has wonderful senery and neat new characters. But listen to me and listen to me well, If you want to buy this game, you must buy the GREATEST HITS version with a bright green bar where it says Playstation. If you don't there is a bug on a speedway level which prevents you from completing the game. I suggest that you get it at a retail store to be sure that you get the right one.

Rampage 2: Universal Tour has smashed, trashed, and crashed its wayonto the popular PlayStation system. As fans of the original coin-op classic alreadyknow, you assume the role of one of three monsters with an insatiable desire to crushvarious cities into oblivion. You can choose between the rambunctious rhino Boris, thelarger-than-life lobster Ruby, or the charismatic rat Curtis. Each character has specialmoves that you can unleash upon the unsuspecting cities. After you make your selection, you can then proceed to eat helpless victims, smash tanks, and destroy solid buildings.

Causing mass mayhem and destruction is not your only purpose in this game. You mustalso rescue your fellow monsters in crime--George, Lizzie, and Ralph (which manydie-hard fans of the Rampage series will recognize from the original coin-op). Tosave your friends, you must first defeat the ever-approaching military and lawenforcement officials that aim to protect each city. Being bad has never felt so good.--Michael Byer

This is the sequel to rampage World Tour.It is a lot harder and impossible to beat with out the cheats. Not only can you not save as frequently on it.But you also do not have infident continues.

It is a few year after the original incident. George Ralph and Lizz have bed captured. You can choose to play asone of 7 monster after passwords are entered. It called universl tour because unlike the first not all of it takes place on Earth.A small percent of game takes place in outer space.

There are four new Monster in this one at the Begining you can play as three of seven monster.Boris a reall big strong but slowrhino.Rubby a giant crab a short of rip of Ebirath from Godzilla versus the Sea monsters.Curtis giant rat. Then Muckous aone eyedalien. You also can play as George, Ralph and Lizz after passwords are entered.

Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix is the prequel to the survival-horror game Fear Effect. Here you play one of four mercenaries in a team that has signed on to bring back the kidnapped daughter of a powerful Chinese executive. The adventure takes players through the chaotic alternate reality of Hong Kong, Hell's Kitchen in New York City, the formidable walled city of Xi'an, the lost tomb of the first emperor of China, and, finally, into the legendary mountain island of the immortals, Penglai Shan. A variety of melee and range weapons, such as brass knuckles, pistols, and heavy assault weapons, will help you take out increasingly combative henchmen.

The game allows you to play as any one member of the team: cover-girl assassins Hana Tsu-Vachel or Rain Qin, master operative Royce Glas, or greedy killer Jakob "Deke" Decourt. The game's variable ending changes with the disposition of certain in-game events, and other hidden features promise added replayability. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
Compared to other Playstation games, this one is head-and-shoulders above the rest!It comes with 4 disks, and the sheer number and variety of environments are incredible. From the beginning in the dark, subterranian passages, to the beauty of a black tie dinner, to the incredible scenes where a giant rock creature chases you over bridges, and on and on and on.More environments than I can even remember, and I've finished the game twice. The puzzles are at times quite hard, but once you get used to them they're not so bad to figure out. You'll also play a few board games and strategy games against some ancient spirits, which adds even more variety to the gameplay.

Also, the cutscenes are very nicely done, with excellent voice acting and realistic animation. And the music is extremely cool, with oriental themes that add real atmosphere to some of the environments. My favorite part of the game is when you're on the 96th floor of a bio-engineering building, and you have to collect a large number of objects and use them to solve a grand puzzle - it's all laid out very logically and is super fun to play and figure out.You even get to drive a mech at a couple points in the game.

Overall, it doesn't get much better than this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anime Lesbian ...... Assassins with Assault Rifles.Hurrah!
Graphics are wonderful for PS1, and still hold up pretty well on the PS2.Voice acting is top notch.Plot is rich, and very different (gotta love that Japanese weirdness).Controls take some getting used to.Inventory system isn't the best. All in all an excellent game for adults.Challenging and very atmospheric.

4-0 out of 5 stars All in All, an Intriguing Plunge into the Bizarre
Upon finishing FE 2, I have to admit it is one of the most unique and interesting games I have ever played. Its graphics and character models are superb, lending the game an ambience that is simultaneously eerie and beautiful. Although it does borrow its slanted camera angles from the RE series, it still has a wholly original and distinctive feel. The voice acting is also to be commended; it's among the best that I have ever experienced. Despite the awkward control and poorly designed inventory scheme, what really distinguishes FE 2 from others in its genre to make it a classic is how it incorporates Chinese mythology into a unique (and mature) sci-fi storyline using compelling characters. Usually action video games revolve around hackneyed plots of military operatives and shadowy government conspiracies, so many will be pleased to discover this alternative. The storyline manages to unfold in a well-paced and coherent manner that keeps the player anticipating the next CG cut scene and many of the puzzles are neatly integrated into the context of the plot.
The main drawback of this game is its difficulty. Much of the challenge in the action sequences is simply mastering the art of trial and error as well as the controls which compound the frustration. Needless to say, the added "quick load" feature of FE 2 is a merciful addition to the series. Many of the puzzles are equally trying, but, in the final assessment, they are a big part of what make FE 2 so great. They stand as among some of the most engrossing challenges in a video game to date.
Be forewarned: FE 2 is not for the weak of heart! For those who are up to the challenge (and a little frustration along the way), I highly recommend this game.

1-0 out of 5 stars The game is hard.
I did not enjoy the controls on this game. The only entertaining part with the somewhat nudity that came with the game. You know what they say, "Sex sells."Well if that was their only selling point then I won't hold my breath for the next one.I would rather get a girlie mag for excitement.Definatly not for kids.I must say though, this is the first game I put down in one day.I gave Batman and Robin a 3 day chance before I put that one down.

4-0 out of 5 stars You think you're a gamer --
I recently purchased this game a few days ago, realising that Fear Effect 3 will come in 2003 sometime. For the review, with this game, one gets to experience the ultimate frustration and intensity of the game and for the game.In this game, unlike others such as Tomb Raider or Resident Evil, one learns how to die -- a lot.The puzzles aren't too complicated, but some of them are somewhat difficult, especially the "reflex" tests, where you have to dodge enemies and various threats. The bosses in this game aren't too hard per se, but they do make Resident Evil seem like child-play, especially the latter levels.Like in Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, one will practice tremendously to eliminate the bosses, and unlike Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, one will need to be truly conservative with your ammo and resources. One has to choose your targets wisely! In a few words: you will die, and you will learn to die constantly, persistently and gracefully (hopefully). The graphics of this game is actually very, very crisp and detailed for an anime look.I like the level where you visit the Tomb of the First Emperor. They got it down nearly perfectly.Even the sound effects are well-done, with the perfect sound effect for the weapons, movement and characters.Lastly, the story and the characters are very mature, and they do curse and this game does involve suggestive lesbianism. If you liked the Metal Gear Solid series, then this is the game to get, but the story for this game is much stranger and resembles something like the Twilight Zone and Total Recall.... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great graphics, poor gameplay...
The first time i played TR Chronicles for the PS1, i found it not that interesting. Face it, the Rome levels are just not that exciting. I played and beat levels 1 & 2, then attempted 3, unfortunatly, it took me 2 weeks to figure out how to beat level 3, it was WAY too hard. And that's just one of the many things that make TR Chronicles fall short of being one of the best in the series. OK, so there's alot of pros, Lara can now interact more with the characters around her (instead of just shooting a weapon, she can now bash people over the head with crowbars & stuff), she can now open and search file cabinets for various items, and she can kick down doors (which she could do in TR Last Revelations but it's still a cool move). In addition to new moves, there are 4 massive adventures to be explored. But as with all pros, there must be cons, and unfortunatly, the cons are major. My first complaint is puzzles (particulary timed-puzzles) being WAY too hard. I couldn't complete level 3 in Rome (Colessium) for 2 weeks because of the timed-puzzle in the middle of it, i almost tried to give up on the game in all, but after i beat the Colessium, i found it not so hard. In adventure 2, which takes place on a Russian Submarine (personally my favorite adventure of the game), Lara must get onto the sub, dive under the sea, and collect the Sphere Of Destiny (i think that's what its called). Not only is the storyline fun, but you have alot of fun exploring the subs many levels and areas, but once again, a con came into play. I found the Deep Sea Dive level incredibly difficult, and it took me awhile to collect the Sphere and escape back to the sub. Adventure 3, takes place on a haunted island in Ireland, i really just didn't like this area, not only is it boring, but it is so dark its hard to see what your doing. Finally, Adventure 4, which takes place in the VCI Headquarters, is a partly fun adventure. But even with its cool graphical images of a high-tech city, its really difficult to complete the 3 levels involved (espicially since you on have the HK weapon). On level 1 of VCI, i found it difficult to get the Iris at the end, but luckily, i found a cheat (not too much of a cheat) where you can press the button, sideflip left, flip backwards, then press and crawl like your crawling off a ledge, you will go through the glass!! It took me awhile, but after that helpful little clue, i completed level 1 of VCI. Level 2 of VCI, Escape With The Iris, is incredibly difficult (espicially since you have no weapons), i found all the portions with the elevator shafts and that slide where you half to jump and swing off two poles very difficult, i could barely complete this level. And the final level, Red Alert!, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to complete shooting range #2, it took me 45 to 50 times to complete this one obstacle. Pretty much, i found TR Chronicles a cool game graphics wise, but gameplay is very difficult and sometimes annoying, if you want an all-out fun TR game that still has cool graphics, check out TR2 or TR3, just remember this one is just a sample of what will be on TR6: THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS for the PS2 & PC, coming soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars don't read it if you don't want hints.
It starts out in rome the first level took a bit to figure out but now it's easy (for me). The other levels are about the same ecxept for the second where you have to kill the three headed dragon.
then comes Russia you start out by getting into the submarine after getting in, it gets tough. When you get to the kitchen figure it out
but be careful of the chef. Walk quietly around the stove and quietly up behind the chefs back and hit ctrl twice fast to hit the chef with your cowbar in his back, I'll leave you there. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Lara Croft Presumed Dead; Living It Up In The Past!
At the end of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, many fans were left devastated thinking Lara was gone for good. They need not have worried as Lara returned in November 2000 in Tomb Raider: Chronicles, the fifth installment of the most successful PlayStation game series ever. There was one slight problem - Lara was presumed dead! Tomb Raider: Chronicles contains four sections of different times of Lara Croft's life from the past. These four stages are titled Rome, Search For The Spear, Black Isle and VCI Headquarters. Each quarter includes three brilliant levels, except Search For The Speach which includes four. Whilst probably the worst game out of all five, Tomb Raider: Chronicles is still superb, proving the excellence of the Tomb Raider phenomenon. The Official UK PlayStation Magazine says of Chronicles, "10/10 - Lara's swansong on PlayStation is a triumph". They're not wrong!

The first section is Rome. As with all Tomb Raider games, the levels become harder and more challenging as the game progresses - Chronicles is no different. In Rome, Lara is attempting to acquire the Philospher's Stone. This adventure brigns her into contact with Pierre and Larson, who you will probably remember as the peksy guys who wouldn't die from the first Tomb Raider! The three levels in Rome are called Streets Of Rome, Trajan's Markets and Colloseum. All levels are superb, mainly because of the scenery. The sky is a deep blue and the sound is superb. You can hear the crickets chirping away and you can almost sense what the levels are like - early evening with fresh air and a cool temperature. I know, this sounds so strange but it's true! The second section, Search For The Spear is a lot harder and complex. In this second section of Chronicles, Lara is seeking the Spear of Destiny, an age-old artefact currently lying in the ruins of a wrecked and abandoned U-boat. She is not alone in desiring possession of this mystical object, however - a mafioso boss has heard of its power and wishes to harness it for his own nefarious aims. He has bribed the admiral of a Russian submarine to take him to the resting place of the Spear. Lara decides to hitch a ride. The four levels in Search For The Spear are called Base, Submarine, Deep Sea Dive and Sinking Submarine. This section is my favourite of the four because it's very exciting and has the best storyline in the whole game...

The game continues with Black Isle. In this third chapter, Tomb Raider: Chronicles follows an early Lara Croft adventure. After Lara overhears a conversation about spooky occurences at a nearby island, she stows away on a boat chartered by Father Patrick as he heads to investigate. The three levels are called Gallows Tree, Labyrinth and Old Mill. Throughout these three levels, Lara is completely without weaponry. Only your wits will protect your beloved Lara from the devilish shandes that haunt the Black Isle. These levels are set somewhere in England, but I'm not sure where. Even though it's always raining and is very dark and damp, it makes for an interesting and refreshing change from the typical hot desert/jungle style levels of previous Tomb Raider games. The fourth and final chapter in Chronicles, VCI Headquarters, is large and very hard! In one of the sternest challenges ever faced in a Tomb Raider game, Lara must steal the Iris - an object of immense power. Mixing stealth with brute force, she has to negotiate complex corridors, fight crack troops and even survive an entire level without a gun. Fortunately, she has Zip - an American hacker - on hand to advise her as she progresses. The fourth section is set in a New York tower block and the three levels are called 13th Floor, Escape With The Iris and Red Alert. All levels are incredibly tough and deeply frustrating if you fail to achieve the required task to progress with the game. Some sections on these three levels are downright scary (echoing footsteps when there's no one there and the sound of invisible laser beams that get closer), yet you will experience an immense feeling of success and achievement once you complete these final levels!

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

All in all, Tomb Raider: Chronicles is a fantastic game. It's not quite up there with the superior excellence of Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2 and Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, but it's still a superb game to play. The game isn't very long - it took me less than a week to complete over the Christmas 2000 period - a lot shorter than the time it usually takes for me to complete a Tomb Raider game, which is usually in the region of a year! Compared to a lot of other PlayStation games, however, Tomb Raider: Chronicles stands head and shoulders above the rest. Buy this now from Amazon to complete your Tomb Raider collection!

1-0 out of 5 stars Take a look at the cover...
because what you see is what you get. Is Lara a hip, Matrix-style gun-toting action adventure assassin? No, she's a solitary tomb raider doing (hopefully) fun, inventive puzzles in great, real-life locations. So as much as I appreciate new, exciting areas, put us in a situation she would actually be doing. She doesn't need to take on a bunch of villains and skateboard too...

2-0 out of 5 stars Awkward Controls, Frustrating Camera...
Tomb Raider: Chronicles (TRC) features the lovely Lara Croft in her many adventures from Rome to a U-Boat to a high-tech tower complex. The game has one of the most awkward controls and frustrating adjusting camera angles since Danger Girl (that's a cheap game, and one should buy it simply for the art inside and NOT for the game or gameplay!).Anyway, one will keep on falling and falling...etc. and continously get blindsided by enemies for the most part.Additionally, Lara still moves like a tank with feet, instead of having fluid and sly movement. However, the stealth in the latter levels in particular is a welcome addition, being spoiled by the Metal Gear Solid series. The puzzles aren't too difficult, but they are very physical-oriented as opposed to mental-oriented (like Eidos' Fear Effect). The cinematics are okay, but they are rather short. My two favorite levels on this game is the U-Boat/Russian Base level and the Tower: Level 13 level. Both of these are reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid.Otherwise, this game is definitely for fans of Tomb Raider previously, but for newbies, definitely rent before you buy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hydro Thunder - Arcade Supreme Game
I always play this game at our local cinema while waiting for the movie I've picked to start. You have choices of San Francisco 2049, Gauntlet Dark Legacy or Hydro Thunder.Hydro Thunder is definately the pick of this bunch. The courses are sleek, interesting and you are rewarded for your skill.
I was really pleased when Midway released this game on the Playstation and you won't find a better platform to show this game off.Yes the price for this game is high but your alternatives are the pricey, often cartridge only for theNintendo 64or the Dreamcast!!The only thing better is the Arcade Machine - Midway? Yes? Please send me one!

Amazon.com Product Description

This Resident Evil-like action-adventure game takes place in the distant future--A.D. 12,090, to be exact--some 10,000 years after vampires have won control of the planet from humans. Vampire Hunter D is based on the original Hideyuki Kikuchi novel and the cult-classic anime that followed. Your character is the aptly named Vampire Hunter D, a half-human, half-vampire who is hired to rescue a kidnapped child. The linear plot has three endings, each of which is triggered by meeting certain criteria. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Had for the Memories
Vampire Hunter D is very much a creation of Yoshitaka Amano, a visionary designer who, among other things has had a significant influence on the visual effects of game and anime design. He is most famous for his work in the Final Fantasy series, but this game as a derivative of his anime work.As such, it arrived with a built in following, but failed to live up to expectations.

It is a fairly representative plot, based on the 2001 Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust DVD.Rescue a young damsel from the claws of vampire Meier Link, a story with several unexpected twists, which are used here as well.It is a puzzle-solving, watch your vitality sort of game.

The puzzles can be difficult, fighting is simplistic and clumsy, and the interface is awkward. For someone who has adjusted to games on the newer consoles, playing Vampire Hunter D may be an unsatisfying experience.IT is even a bit primitive by PSOne standards.Still it's not a bad game, just one that is very dated.

Its real value today is as a collectors item for D fans, who probably all believe that there isn't enough of the dunpeal vampire killer to go around. The graphics are murky, but it's still the world where half-breed vampires get even with their sires and damsels are there for the rescuing.

Collector, diehard fan, or curious game player, this is worth picking up.Just don't expect Final Fantasy level play and you will avoid disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie made into a pretty good video game.
Im a huge fan of the Vampire Hunter D movies, its almost natural a guy like myself would pick up this game.Over all Im very pleased with the game.I've been pretty much playing it all week so I guess it has something special about it.The game itself is like "Resident Evil" only its not as scary. Some parts kinda' put you on the edge of your seat but not really.Sure it has tons of monsters to kill but they don't really shock you in anyway special. You walk into a room and boom, there they are.Monters.The only reason I see for this game to have so many monsters without any real shock value to them is that they wanted to create the game just like the movies.Vampire Hunder D (both movies) was chop full of monsters. All over the place. So thats forgiven.Over all this is a fun game that stays true to the movies the best it can.Give it a try, you might like it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Noooooooooooooooo!
What have they done to you D!?This game had so much potential.Good graphics, great story, and a huge fan base. But they made the game slow, excessively difficult, and bland.I tried, I actually TRIED to like this game, but it was so hard to feign interest in it for more than an hour.I loved the movies, but this is a travesty!

Go Buy the Legacy of Kain series instead

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best PS1 games
A great game for play station 1. Based roughly on parts from both movies, the original and Bloodlust. If you have a PS2 get this game anyways, it is fun, addictive, and contains a few puzzles. A few bugs, but all in all a great game.

5-0 out of 5 stars How good is this game anyway?
This game is very good, Although some of the bosses were pretty tough to beat on the first try (Like Meier Link for example).I really got a kick out of it, Though for the thirtieth time I got the bad ending (Where everyone died--Even Leila)--But D survived.A couple of hours ago I beat it again--And this time I got the good ending (Where everyone survived--Even Leila).Boy, Is this game a trip or what. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Puzzler NOT based on Tetris
This game will be very familiar if you've ever played Zuma online( PopcapGames.com ).Ballistic isn't as aesthetically pleasing, but gameplay is identical.I find myself coming back to this game often, even as the more fashionable games are beaten, traded-in, or given up on.The key word here is "value"; you won't pay much but you'll play much. This game is family-friendly, easy to play, and the light reggae and piano music between games is a nice touch.Go ahead and get it and start wasting some time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but short
This game is very addictive! There was only one thing about this game that I did not like, and that was the length. We just received the game last week, and I have already gone through every stage in the stage mode. There are other options though, like two-player and Panic mode.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great puzzle game!
The Playstation doesn't have a lot to offer puzzle fans, so this new offering is really welcome. Similar to the game Bust-a-Move 2, Ballistic requires you toshoot different colored balls toward a spiral. Matchingthree or more balls of the same color causes them to disintegrate. Playends when the balls overrun your ball launcher. My wife, who is usuallyaverse to video games, picked up the play mechanics in about 10 seconds. Icouldn't tear her away! A great one or two-player game that's sure toappeal to the whole family. The game also sells at a bargain price. Highlyrecommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE scariest video game ever created!!
Back in 2002, I had never really played any kind of survival horror game ever in my life. A friend of mine came over to my house and brought Silent Hill and the Playstation. I was just watching and I really liked how it had snow falling out in the town in the summer nonetheless, it looked like a really scary game. Then, months later, I borrowed this game from my friend and played from the beginning and didn't get really far because I really didn't know what to do. Finally, one night, when my friend was back over at my house, I was playing and he was sitting there watching and we were playing with surround sound, the lights off and no one else was in the house. From the very beginning alley, I was very scared! So I get to the school, Midwich Elementary School, and everything looks normal. My friend who was watching kept telling me that once I go through the Clock Tower, I will be back at Midwich Elementary and that it will be the same school but at the same time, it wouldn't be the same school and at that point, I was really starting to freak out. I had no idea what horrors were waiting for me!

I go through the Clock Tower and I hear these really creepy sirens, I'm to the point where I want to turn the game off but my friend was with me and kept telling me to move on. So I start to go into the school and once I'm in, I'm freaking out! All the floors were replaced by metal grates with nothing below them, the walls were like chained fences, everything covered in blood, pure horror and terror!! I was really scared by the visuals and the music. Something really creepy in the Alternate school is when you go into one of the bathroom's on the first floor, you end up on the second floor, creepy!!! Just everything that I saw and heard in every room and corridor scared me to death!!

I turned the game off after I was done in the school and couldn't sleep with the light off!! I did eventually play through the whole game and beat it but I have never been so scared playing a video game in my entire life!!! The really scary music and sound effects play a big part. But what's really scary isn't just the atmosphere, the music or visuals. It freaks me out thinking about why the town of Silent Hill is deserted and how Samael came along. If I think about this stuff before I go to sleep, a lot of times, I can't sleep. The Alternate Hospital, Alchemilla Hospital is another really scary place in the game that really scared me too but not as bad as the school. To be honest, when I first was going through the Alternate school, the way it looked, that's what I thought hell would look like, it was so scary. To this day, it scares me! Sometimes even with the light on, it's scary!! Even though the graphics aren't the best, this Silent Hill game scares me more than Silent Hill's 2, 3 or 4 and they have better graphics!!! I would not recommend this game to anyone who scares easily!

5-0 out of 5 stars JUST AS GOOD AS RESIDENT EVIL 2
THIS GAME MADE ME CRAP MY PANTS. AT FIRST IT WONT SEEM SCARY BUT
IT DOES WITH THE GHOSTS,GARGOYLES 'N' STUFF. THE GRAPHICS SUCK
BUT IT IS STILL A GOOD GAME BUT YOULL GET LOST. BUT A GREAT
ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION OF GAMES

4-0 out of 5 stars Holy Christ!
I know that everyone said it, but Silent Hill really is the scariest game I've ever played. Its constant psychological assault leaves you gripped (sorry for the lame pun) to the controller, going around the next corner even though you are almost positive something is waiting for you just out of sight.Chances are you know the story by now, so I'll just go into gameplay. As I said above, this is a scary game. When it first came out a friend rented it and brought it over.It is the only time I have ever seen two teenage boys scared in the middle of the afternoon in a well-lit room (stupid hospital, wait til you get on the elevator again and you'll see what I mean). The gameplay overall is fun (though nervewracking) but it does have a few problems. The controls are the main problem, but if you're used to Resident Evil it shouldn't be too annoying as they are almost exactly the same. The fog is also kind of annoying, even though it does add to the tension, mainly because its obvious its covering up the godawful draw distance. The only other problem I had was with the voice work.I realize almost every game has some problems, but the pauses between each sentence during the engine-driven cutscenes are aggravating and only make you want Harry to forget about his daughter and leave so he will stop talking like that.Overall, its a solid game that has only a few problems.Great rental and, if you can find it cheap enough (Electronics Boutique wanted $25 used-ripoff-check Blockbuster, I found mine $10-$15 cheaper new) go ahead and buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fear of Flesh
I just rented this game about two days ago, and with a little company from one of my friends, I was able to beat it quickly and still get amazingly scared. The graphics are decent, the cut scenes are amazing for it's release date. I don't know if I'd buy it, since I could rent it for five days, beat it in one, play it over the next day, and get my fill out of it before even returning it.
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of the five was for the story. I had no idea what the heck happened in Silent Hill, even after I beat it. I rented all three, and I have yet to beat them. This one was amazingly scary, and worth checking out, the second is even more horrifying from what I've seen.
All in all, this game is highly worth it for fans of horror games, and in my opinion, better than resident evil.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect thriller
This game is a perfect game for all horror lovers. It's great for its large 3-D enviorment and sound effects. I think what really captures the horrifing mood of the game is the music. For those of you who have played the Resident Evil series, this game goes above and beyond them. This game is a must buy! ... Read more

MediEvil took many players by surprise in 1998 with itszany British sense of humor and skeletal hero Sir Daniel Fortesque. Now, that bony knight returns in a sequel with a lot of fun gimmicksand the same solid play that made the first MediEvil such ahit.

This time around, Dan's been yanked from his eternal slumber onceagain, only to find himself inside a museum in Victorian England, wherean occultist named Palethorn has wakened the dead. Dan must defeatthese walking fossils, using his sword and other weapons, while alsosolving an array of puzzles. Dan's got some new moves to help him alongthe way, including the ability to stick his skull onto a walking handso that he can search inside small cracks.

Compared to the series debut, MediEvil II offers bettergraphics, but isn't quite as funny. The original's 3-D camera problemshaven't been fixed and in some cases are worse than before, but overallMediEvil II makes for a worthy follow-up. --Robb Guido

4-0 out of 5 stars OK, let's be serious . . .
This IS a very fun game, but it is not the best of all time. It IS fun, but not for killing children (you sicko). This game is about choice. You choose to slaughter everyone you meet, which is hard (dying people flee for their lives too fast). Or, you can spare any who wish to run. You build your own traps and choose how you want to use them.

Pros:
Changing levels
Good trap system
Plenty of fodder
Graphics were good for the time

Cons:
The traps go away after every level
Control is occasionally faulty

Worth the money, warn your kids of the violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kagero
This game is the best i've ever played. The only thing i wonder is was there a # one?

5-0 out of 5 stars Die Villagers DIE
Kagero, evenly matched with Final Fantasy Tactics, ranks as the best strategy game I've ever played. I bought Kagero when it first came out (because how could you NOT buy a game where you kill amiable townfolk?).In the two years since, I've played through it at least four times. Actually, the minute I finished the game for the first time, I just started a new one again. I can't even articulate how fun this game can be once you get the hang of it. The PLUNK sound of a lava vase dropping onto and scalding a child's head is just so satisfying. Tossing a person across a room into a bear trap is the ultimate tension release. Get your hands on this game any way that you can.

1-0 out of 5 stars This game ...
This game is one of the worst games I have ever played on any game system. The graphics are pitiful. There is virtually no point to this game. You set traps to kill your enemies...oh, gee that sounds like fun FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES.Rent this game before you even consider buying it at any price. It is a total yawn.

4-0 out of 5 stars This game is fun.
It is really fun.The first guy you have to get, is Daar, this ... villager, than this tough soldier guy, then the soldier guy's freind, but soon an actual plot comes! There is an evil sorcerer guy that wants to take over the world, he's hard. This game isn't that hard, and it is fun to play. buy it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome shooter!Though VERY hard.....but fun!
Thunder for, in my opinion, is one of the best shoot'em up's ever created. It should not be compared to other games (like Einhander, even though people think that this is better, which I disagree) of it's type. All those who have ever played the other games of the series know that even though the game can be EXTREMELY HARD, it is NEVER cheap. It demmands ultimate concentration, just as Working Designs implies. The graphics may not be the best ever seen, but they are pretty ... good anyway. Combining the action/adventure and racing genres, Chocobo Racing follows in the footsteps ofpopular "car-toon" titles Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart. While the cutesy bird character Chocobolacks the mainstream notoriety of Mario or Crash, the kooky creature will likely appeal to fans of the popular FinalFantasy series. Chocobo makes a successful flight from sidekick to star in this quirky racer, which features sevencompeting cartoon characters including White Mage, Mog, and Golem.

All of the racing characters possess special powers and unique tracks designed around their personas. ChocoboRacing contains five challenging racing modes, including grand prix (four-track tournament), time attack, versus(two-player racing), relay race, and story mode. We were particularly intrigued by the story mode, which placesChocobo in an old-fashioned pop-up storybook as he aims to collect several scattered blue crystals.

We also liked the high replay value of this game. For example, a racing victory may reward players with the ability tocustomize a character. Chocobo Racing is far from a sophisticated racer--and, in fact, that is part of the appeal. This is an easy game to learn, so younger players can pick up a controller and play with little trouble. Still, plenty ofchallenges hide in the detailed tracks, which are filled with time-zapping traps and treacherous curves. --CarrieBell

Pros:

  • Diverse tracks and characters
  • Will appeal to fans of Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart
Cons:
  • Weak steering and vehicle control
  • Cartoon theme may not appeal to die-hard racing fans
  • Not compatible with multiplayer adapter, so simultaneous racing is limited to 2 players

4-0 out of 5 stars DONT LISTEN TO THOSE PEOPLE
Some people think this game isnt fun at all. Those people are all wrong. They dont know what fun is!And there are more than 8 characters. There are about 15 or 16.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly 2 Player
Well,I Really liked this game 'till it got kinda easy in the story mode and all the other modes against the computer.But...if you have another person to play with that's a different story.Get 2 people for the time of your life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fun
The characters are cute and it is fun playing for all ages. It can be quite addictive. There are short cuts to beat the other players but you will have to discover them yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, fun, and chocobos!
If you enjoyed chocobo racing in Final Fantasy VII, or if you like cuteness, this racing game is for you!The characters are all very adorable (and may be familiar to fans of the Final Fantasy series), but the game is also a lot of fun for groups.

- The graphics are about average in the racing, to above average in the movies.
- The controls are responsive and adequate.
- The game is well-balanced, with easy modes for less experienced players, and hard modes. The story mode is a little cheesy, but fun nonetheless.
- The music and sounds blend in with the game well.
- You can get this game very cheap, compared to other racing games.
- It is a lot of fun to race against other players (unfortunately, more than 2 human players are not supported), but the AI of the game is also challenging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This game is one of the best racing games that there is the graphics are awesome, and the levels are easy to beat. This is a great game. ... Read more

One hundred years ago, in the land of Gallowmere, an evil wizard was defeated by the honest citizens of the land. You are a knight that died in the first unsuccessful charge against the wizard's army, but the king, in need of a way to inspire his embattled people, gave you both a hero's burial and the credit for victory. Now the wizard has returned from the dead with a mind for vengeance, and you've been brought back from the dead to stop him. Perhaps the world's least worthy hero, you set out to save the land once again--for the first time.

The animation and humor are reminiscent of Tim Burton'sThe Nightmare Before Christmas. If this alone isn't enough to thrill you, the difficulty level will. This is one of the few games that seems to keep itself near the perfect level--difficult enough to keep you interested, easy enough to keep you from getting frustrated.

The perspective perfectly complements the gameplay and animation style: the 3-D follow-cam allows you, in most places, to look around with ease. And you'll want to take time to see the sights, since the game looks as good as it plays. This game isn't just for the hard-core gamer. It's for everyone. --John Cocking

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for any age!
This is a great game and I constantly find myself going back to play it again and again. Great graphics and game play as well as challenging puzzles and a cool story.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun clean game
its of the old system, can be used on the PS2 also. Was cutting edge when it first came out. I loved it, played it through more than once. Is more a hit in the EU, than north america. Just clean good fun. Easy to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun! Also, Look for its PSP Release!
I love this game. The countless hours of fun it has given me, ahh, good times.Yes, it's primarily hacking zombies away, but didn't you just jump on things in Super Mario? The point I'm trying to make is that both games succeed in turning a fairly simple concept into an immense and addictive video game experience (although I am in no way comparing this game to Super Mario, it's great, but that would be blasphemy). There are puzzles, extra goals and challenges, awards for your exploits, and an intriguing storyline (and some good humor all around). So, if you just happen to be looking for a delightful time on this grand old console (I still play mine!) this game is a great choice!
THEY HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THIS GAME WILL BE REALEASED ON PSP!!!!IT WON'T BE JUST A PORT EITHER!!!SO IF YOU LOVED THIS GAME, KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED, THE SCREENS ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!
I can't wait!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best for PS1
MediEvil is by far one of the best games I've played for the playstation.
The graphics are excellent, the game play is superb, voice acting is very good, and replay value is high. As you progress in the game you have to learn new ways to battle enmies, as their strategies change-along with the enviornments and puzzles.
These all keep the game from ever becoming repetitive or boring. It is also a very humorous game.
The scenery and soundtrack are very Time Burton-esque. If you like his sensibilities thaen you will definitely like MediEvil.
I own a PS2 and an xbox and this game is still fun and holds up!
(If you get into it beware the sequel-it is o.k. but not nearly as good.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hall of Heros Awaits...
Never are you gonna get a better game! I have never seen a game where you can fight zombies with swords and clubs. You can set your enemeies on fire with a Fire Crossbow. You'll fight the evil Zarok in Zarok's Lair. You'll go into battles with demons of stained glass. You'll go into Graveyards and use your sword to kill Zarok's Army. Collect the Chalice of Souls and go to the Hall of Heros for a reward. Once you have completed the game and you have collect all the Chalices you'll become a hero of THE Hall!

Pros:
Good Graphics
Cool Gameplay
Pretty Good Storyline
Very Cool Menu

Cons:
Not as thrilling as in MediEvil 2
No blood like in MediEvil 2 ... Read more

A beautifully illustrated fantasy role-playing game, SaGa Frontier2 features lush, hand-painted watercolor backgrounds that give this animatedtitle a rich, storybook look. Two-dimensional graphics have rarely looked thisgood in an adventure game.

Pretty pictures aside, the battle system in SaGa Frontier 2 isoutstanding, allowing for combat to be as micromanaged or as mindless as playerssee fit. In addition to assigning in-battle character roles (such as support, intimidation, and so on), players can choose between multiple battle modes andexecute elaborate attack combos (similar to that of fighting games).

Like its predecessor, SaGa Frontier 2 puts a spin on the genre byfeaturing multiple storylines that converge at various points in the game
