Amazon.com Review Play in Backyard Baseball 2001 can be as simple or as difficult as you want it to be. While it is definitely useful to know a few simple statistics about your team members, it is not required. During play, batters may choose between power hits, line drives, bunts, and grounders as they try to hit the fiendishly clever pitches of the opposition. Once a hit is made, players direct runners from base to base. Unlike the earliest baseball simulators, where many decisions were made by the computer, this one puts the user in control of everything, encouraging a good sense of baseball tactics and discouraging rash play. (Stealing bases with a player who is not a good runner, for example, is a quick road to an out!) When pitching, players select from a menu of pitches and then give the pitcher a target within the batter's box for their throw. A hit transfers play to a wider view of the field, so you can direct the ball to whichever base the runner is headed for. Backyard Baseball 2001 is an upgrade of an earlier game, and players familiar with the original Backyard Baseball will find that it is very similar in design and structure. Your favorite players (and their color commentators) have been carried over wholesale from the first game, complete with the same signature animations as they come up to bat. At first glance, in fact, the program may seem like it hasn't been spruced up much at all. However, the newer game allows players to join Major League ball teams, such as the Toronto Blue Jays, or to create their own team names and uniforms. Players may recruit or play against youthful versions of current sports superstars, such as Mark McGwire and Tony Gwynn. They can even create customized team members to shore up weaknesses in their outfield or custom-tweak an even deadlier pitcher. Another very welcome upgrade is Internet play, which takes the players on the virtual road, pitting them against teams managed by other players online. The game design in Backyard Baseball 2001 is absolutely stellar. The interface is easy to use and entertaining. The eight ball fields each come with advantages and disadvantages to be puzzled out and exploited. Players themselves come from a pleasingly multicultural palette with a good age, gender, and ability mix. This game also carries over and expands on the original Backyard Baseball's zany sense of humor: a drinking-box gauge shows how much "juice" the pitcher still has, the patter of the commentators is pleasing and surprisingly nonrepetitive, and successful play is rewarded with power-ups for both pitcher and batter. These power-ups are hilarious--a hot pitcher can throw Fireballs, for example, which literally burn as they zoom past the luckless batter. Batters who do manage to hit these special pitches earn the right to try Crazy Bunts, which carom randomly around the field, or the (literally) Screaming Line Drives. Young baseball enthusiasts will love this program, which combines entertainment and sports education in seamless combination. So put your team together, suit up, and play ball! --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (57)
but, as my title says, it's made for the younger kind. The game gets really easy really fast, and on the hard mode with errors off, i beat the other team 44-1. I would borrow it from a friend, see how you like it, and go from there, but don't buy it right away.
I know why i love this game, it is because it provides me hours of fun and excitement. you are your own coach and you have to make wise decisions or your team won't win the championship.
I am only a slightly better player and much better at realizing just how poorly I am doing. The options are plentiful, from choices among exotic and attractive ball fields (boy, I should have been so lucky as a kid), line ups (as a kid, fielding a full team in the backyard would constitute a once-in-kid's lifetime dream), to pitch selection (for me as a kid it was simply throw hard, harder or harder still). Not for the impatient or the slow-witted. But this is baseball. ... Read more

Previous (2001) FIFA series had better gameplay and slightly worse graphics. If you have a previous version of FIFA, wait for 2003 and grab it.
1. The game AI is hideous as you can still score goals by using brute force. The recipe simple. Take a team with fast strikers and either steal the ball from the back, as the computer makes idiotic and predictable passes, or simply run straight at the computer's defenders and score at will. No skill required. 2. The gameplay is the most enfuriating ever. The computer strings together pass after pass, effortlessly moving the ball up the field, while you struggle with the inadequate camera angles and the defunct passing scheme, to complete just a few passes. This results in you having to chase the computer around and never having more than 30% of the possession. You spend the entire game hunting the computer down, getting more and more frustrated, as the computer strings together useless passes in the back, apparently content with the score, even when it is down 0-3. 3. Some major bugs kill what little decent gameplay one can experience when playing against a friend. The framerate goes down and you experience "skipping" on certain camera angles, especially when crossing midfield. Although you have many camera angles to choose from, none is conducive to realistic soccer. The "Tele" or "Tower" views allow you to see the action you need, but you can never see who you are passing the ball to. The "Swing" camera results in too much skipping to even take into account, which is unfortunate as it would probably be the best camera angle. "Panoramic" results in you having to use a magnifying glass on your TV screen to spot your player, let alone the ball! Finally, "End to end" is horrible for aerial challenges. As I said, not one camera angle is suitable. 4. Incomplete/wrong rosters: World Cup soccer without Holland and Romania?? How about Ronaldo playing for Brasil, but as a midfielder?! This is almost worse than playing FIFA 2002, where the whole Holland team is comprised of numbers (no roster)! Just bite the bullet and buy the license already, EA Sports!! You'll just end up making us pay for it anyway, right? This game is just horrible and no fun at all. I've never thrown my controller to the floor so frequently in utter frustration. Maybe this is a secret mini-game that I've unlocked? If such is the case, congratulations to EA Sports. They couldn't have conceived a game more conducive to such behavior! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula plays likemost any other 2-D side-scrolling adventure. SpongeBob has to recoverthe four oven dials to unlock the Flying Dutchman's oven. En route, hemust explore Bikini Bottom (his homeland) and fight all kinds of meancrustaceans and other sea critters using a burger-flinging spatula anda jellyfish-catching net (there are four other wacky weapons). He mustget past a few puzzles and deal with boss creatures as well. Prettystandard stuff overall, maybe too standard. SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula lacks theinspiration of a Mario or Rayman title, and barely comes close to thehumor and whimsy of the excellent cartoon show on which it's based.Still, the violence is cartoonishly entertaining, the characters arevibrant, and the graphics are quite good. Fans of the show might beable to overlook its faults, but the game could have been better.--Andrew S. Bub Pros: Reviews (20)
On the good side, the graphics are colorful and do a decent job of representing the look of the show. You also get to talk to various characters from the show (although the extent of the conversation is usually just a one-sentence comment).Unfortunately, the decent job of creating a SpongeBob look/feel is about the only good thing THQ managed to pull off here. The gameplay is..well..rather poor.It boils down to standard platform gaming with fairly stiff controls.Usually, the levels scroll upwards or to the right, leaving you to jump from platform to platform while dodging and/or attacking enemies until you simply reach the end of the level.Platform jumping can be a nightmare as the screen will often scroll past moving platforms in mid-jump, leaving you trying to blindly guess where the platform is so you can attempt to land on it.Fighting enemies isn't much better.Despite several different weapons, some enemies are hard to kill (often due to sluggish controls), and getting hit is often unavoidable (usually knocking you off a platform and sending you hurling back to the bottom of the level so you get to experience the dull repetition of ascending the whole area over again). You can also only get hit twice, meaning you'll find yourself dying often despite the plentiful supply of healing items (extra pants) found in each level. In short, the areas themselves are boring and repetitive, the gameplay is frustrating, and you're usually forced to play the levels again and again until you manage to survive.Of course, there are a few bosses thrown into the mix, but they aren't exactly noteworthy and do little to add value to the gameplay. So why did they make game so tough and frustrating?Well, it appears to be an attempt to drag out what is actually a rather short game.I'd say there are only about half a dozen short levels (hard to count since everything is sort of connected as one area), which probably took me somewhere between 1 and 2 hours to complete even with all of the repetition. Well, the bottom line is that SpongeBob fans might want to cautiously check it out, but they shouldn't expect too much.Younger gamers will probably find the game too repetitive, difficult, and frustrating to hold their attention.Older gamers will probably find it dull, repetitive, frustrating, and short.Overall, the game does an extremely poor job of capturing the fun that most fans would expect from the SpongeBob license.

Amazon.com Product Description LEGO Bionicle is an action-adventure game in which players become that brave Tohunga. You will complete several quests in six areas so you can discover the stones that will summon the Toa. Along the way, there are more than 20 levels of traps, puzzles, and adversaries to face. The six multiplayer Tohunga athletic games also let you play with friends. Players customize their Tohunga characters much like they do the toy line. You can choose masks as well as biomechanical limbs and torsos. The game even syncs with your Bionicle toys. Enter codes from the packaging and you'll gain access to secret game-enhancing features. Visually, LEGO Bionicle offers a top-down perspective, and its vertical and horizontal parallax scrolling makes the gameplay more interactive. Best of all, the game takes full advantage of the Game Boy Advance platform, letting you link up to four GBA units so you can play with friends. Reviews (47)

If you enjoyed the original arcade version, then you should like this one.The graphics are okay, nothing mind-blowing, and the action is fast but repetitive. One thing about this game that I was suprised about dealt with the amount of difficulty.Frogger gets hard even on the first level, and then becomes downright impossible as you get farther on into the game.Younger players will probably find this fact frustrating and leave the game alone after a week or so. ... Amazon.com Product Description Reviews (14)
The graphics, presented in an overhead 3D adventure-type view of the battle arena, are fairly good. The intro movie is excellent.Powerpuff Girls fans will especially enjoy seeing the show's intro in 3D animation..Overall, things are nice and colorful and do a good job of creating an atmosphere similar to the show..The sound is also good, although some more soundbytes from the characters or the show would have been nice. The controls are fairly simple, albeit somewhat sluggish. In fact, my first impression with the game was that it was quite slow. However, as you get into the game a little more, the pace seems to be just about right for the gameplay style...Still, it can be a bit tedious at times... As for difficulty and longevity..There are several villains and arenas to unlock by playing through the story mode with each Powerpuff Girl. These can also be unlocked with passwords that can be found online.Normally, the ability to unlock secrets would add to the longevity of the game, but there aren't many villains to defeat, and the game can be finished fairly quickly...I beat this game and unlocked all of the secrets the first night I played it...That's not to say it's easy...it's actually fairly difficult even on "easy" mode, probably to the point that it would frustrate some of the younger fans of the show. However, with so few battles to win, it becomes a matter of persistance rather than skill...fighting each villain over and over until you defeat them. After you beat the game, there's not much point to doing it again. Then it comes down to the simulator mode, a one or two player single battle game that becomes very tedious after about a day.In other words, it's very likely to become one of those games that sits on a shelf indefinitely after playing it for a day or two... Well, the bottom line is that it's fun for a while. It's definitely not an outstanding game.It IS somewhat violent..but those of you complaining about the violence might want to try watching an actual episode of the cartoon..If you're a big fan of the Powerpuff Girls, it's probably worth buying just to dust off every once in a while, watch the intro movie, and play a bit..For anyone else, I'd say it deserves a rental, but you'll find that even the rental period will probably outlast the enjoyment you'll get from the game...
The characters in this game move extremely slow.It makes it difficult and frustrating to play this game.I may not be an obsessive gamer, but I am 18 and have the necessary motor skills to play a freaking video game!So obviously there is something wrong with the game.I wish I had read everyone's online reviews before getting this game, because I would not have gotten it if I had.I would recommend getting anything from the Spyro series if you're looking to play a cute, fun game. You can actually get somewhere with those! Also, Hello Kitty's Cube Frenzy is a cute game for girls.

Amazon.com Review If you've played any of theAll-Star Baseballgames for the consoles, you'll be familiar with the controls. The 3-Dbatting cursor, which tilts from left to right so you can pull the ball or slapit to the opposite field, is the same, though there's no hit-for-power option. The game also takes on the series' cumbersome baserunning controls. It'sdifficult to pull off a steal, but it can be done--which is better than on mosthandheld baseball games. One improvement is the tracking system for fielders, which draws a yellow dotted line between the fly ball and your outfielder. Thisis a big help, especially for such a small screen. There's also an auto-fieldingoption for those who would rather not bother. The game gets a lot of mileage out of the GBA graphics thanks to some nice 2-Dbackdrops of all the MLB stadiums. Just don't expect Nomar Garciaparra's typicalantics in the batter's box or Jeff Nelson's sidearm delivery. You can play andsave full or half seasons--simulating any number of these games--or simply playa three-game series. The game even lets you manage your lineups for regular andinterleague play and set your pitching rotation. The game suffers, however, from some poor timing. Like most ASB games, hittersare at a disadvantage, as the pitches come to the plate too quickly to get agood read on them. Also, throws are disproportionately faster thanbase runners--we were able to turn a double play before we even had the controlsdown, and numerous shallow outfield hits ended with our runner getting thrownout at first. Overall, though, this is a great sports game for the GBA--a category that hasbeen poorly served for the unit in the past. --Porter B. Hall Pros: Reviews (14)
Gameplay: Unless you put it on Hard (All-Star), the game is way to easy. If you tilt the batting target a certain way, you can get a hit 90% of the time. As for pitching, just pitch to a corner, and you'll get an out almost every time. Plus the baserunning is totally messed up. Special Features: If you're getting this game for the special features in the console version, don't. There is no create-a-player, or Hall-of-Fame team. The only thing it has are trading cards, which serve no purpose. BOTTOM LINE: Too easy, gets boring quickly, no good extras,

Amazon.com Product Description But then along comes NCAA Football 2003 by EA Sports, a game so good that after a few weeks, even your dog will wonder why you never find the time to communicate anymore. Start with the AI--by far the best yet in a college game. Defenses not only react to your play calling and adjust their strategies as the game evolves, but they expertly disguise their coverages and swarm to the ball with speed and decisiveness. In addition, your computer opponent actually makes intelligent clock decisions when time is running out (shocking!). The running game at times is a bit easy on the lower difficulty levels (especially if a back like Oregon's Onterrio Smith has the ball), but that's why they made All-American and Heisman levels. The graphics, as are typical in football video games over the last couple of years, are extremely good, and the between-play animations provide extra spark to the rivalries (taunting runs rampant). But the graphics aren't the star of the show--it's the dynasty mode, stupid. With enough special features and stat categories to keep college football hopheads happy for months--including a comprehensive recruiting engine, a customizable intro screen that features your favorite school's colors and fight song, and a Trophy Room that displays all your bowl and rivalry game hardware--NCAA Football 2003 just might make fans forget the depressing length of the off-season. --Rivers Janssen Pros: Cons: Reviews (137)
