Amazon.com Review DOA3 offers eight modes of play, including story, team battle, tagbattle, and sparring. Sparring mode is customizable and is a nice way for newplayers to learn how to play the game, while story mode lets you take one of the16 available characters through a series of matches culminating in a fightagainst the über-powerful Omega. Once you defeat Omega, a short moviespecific to your character is unlocked. The story mode doesn't make a lot ofsense (and the dialogue is laughable) but the end movies are pretty cool, andit's fun playing through the game as each of the characters. The real meat of the game, though, is its combat, and DOA3 delivers inspades. Each character has specific attacks, such as Zack's Devil Elbow or BassArmstrong's Stun Gun Chop, and once you get the moves down, the entire affaircan unfold like a carefully choreographed ballet as combatants block blows, counterattack, and land devastating punch and kick combos. Adding to the game'sappeal are the massive and detailed multilevel arenas (introduced inDOA2), in which a precise kick or punch can send a combatant plummetingthrough the air down to the arena's next level. It's obvious that DOA3 was designed as a showcase for the Xbox'sgraphical prowess, and it shows--the game's graphics are awesome. The charactermodels look amazing and feature highly detailed clothing and accessories, andthe animations are extremely smooth. The environments are also outstanding, andfeature tons of little touches such as fluttering leaves, snow-covered groundthat can be torn up during the course of a fight, and great-looking water. Eventhe background structures are highly detailed. DOA3 doesn't rewrite the rules of the fighting genre, but its greatgraphics and intense fighting--especially in multiplayer mode--make for anenjoyable gaming experience. --William Harms Pros: Features Reviews (207)

Graphics are identical to the original 16 bit titles, sound effects sound the same, but boss patterns have changed some. Also, because of screen size, there are some rather cheap deaths once in awhile.Surprisingly, this doesn't detract from the game at all.Plays as well as any Contra did.For a portable title, this game is excellent and it's goodness outshines any flaws.

Good Things- Bad things- so overall, A PRETTY GOOD GAME RIGHT(...)
Test Drive delivers the one thing I have wanted from a racing game for years, the ability to choose your own way through a course, AND still win.In '98 Microsoft came out with Motocross Madness, where you rode dirtbikes and did tricks for points, but when you were in racing mode, if you left the track, you didn't stand a chance of winning. Test Drive is different. There are tracks that you can use, and finish, and win on.But you can choose to go off road and win also. You choose your vehicle based on what you want to do.There are power vehicles and speed vehicles. The speed vehicles do well on the relatively flat dirt tracks that lead to the finish, while the power vehicles that have lower top speeds do better leaving the beaten (longer) path and taking the shortcut over the top of the mountain. That said, there is still a downside:There are a relatively limited number of races, so if you are like me and tend to finish games quickly then this one won't take you long.It can also be frustrating, because when you play in the hardest mode, the other vehicles will attempt to bump you and make you spin out. That is really annoying when you managed to stay in first place through an entire race, and then get spun out 10 seconds before you hit the finish line and you end up in 5th place.

Anyhow, the game is definitly loaded with features (most of which are already explained by other reviews) but the one thing I wanted to emphasize is that this game actually helped better my game play tremendously!
For those who are saavy about chess programs, yes, I admit that Fritz is the second-strongest program ... Shredder 8 (also a Chessbase product) is definitely stronger than Fritz, but if you aren't Gary Kasparov, who knows the difference?Besides, in my view Shredder suffers from several defects ... its principal variation (PV) in analysis can be complete rubbish (ie: hanging a queen for no compensation), although it's first move of the PV is always first-rate.Also, Shredder's playing style is "dryer" and more technical (e.g. boring) than Fritz. If you want a tip-top program that plays like a boring machine, grinding out wins, then get Shredder. If you want a program that will come at you like a doberman, then get Junior, Hiarcs or Chess Tiger. But if you want the best of both of these worlds, then get Fritz! Hey, let's face it ... unless you are a Grandmaster, any of the top programs I named, on their top level, will tear you to tiny little pieces every time, especially when you're playing blitz. However, Fritz has many modes (like Friend, Sparring and "personalities") that can lead it to playing like you! There are dozens of ways to change or "dummy down" Fritz's play, and you can have fun with all of them. You can also use Fritz's GUI to play the many FREE winboard or UCI engines freely available on the Internet (I have about 3 dozen, but many more are available). So, it's like having a whole chess club at your disposal, and you can even have the various engines and personalities play each other in matches or tournaments, or help you play against Fritz.(I don't know about you, but I need help against the silicon beasts.) One observation ... which program does Gary Kasparov (and other top players like Anand, Kramnik, Leko, etc) use and analyze with?Fritz.Did Chessmaster get a match with Gary Kasparov or Vladimir Kramnik?Nope ... only Fritz and Junior did.If Kasparov says Fritz analyzes the best, that's good enough for me! Fritz's database is also very useful and it's GUI and many features are top-notch.Also, if you are a serious chess player and want to get the top chess database program, Chessbase, then Fritz will fit in seamlessly. How can you go wrong, especially at this discounted price?(Don't hold your breath looking for a discount at Chessbase...ha, ha.) So the bottom line?Fritz is #1.Get it from Amazon!I did, and don't regret it a bit. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review The game features two teams of squat, cartoonish, big-headed kids. Some are onthe playing field and some reside in the back zone ready to scoot up a lob andnail an opponent in the back or from the side. The animations, particularly whena kid gets squashed, are amusing, and, after all, are also the point of thegame. Amass points and win the match, then move on to the next horde ofbig-headed kids. There are several kinds of throws you can make to surprise your opponents, including a cool corkscrew throw and a straight-up overhanded bean ball. As youknock teams out (no pun intended), you advance toward the world competition(shades of South Park here), where you represent your favorite nation. You can also link up with an opponent for a little head-to-head action, which isthe best way to dish out some virtual pain onto local bullies who lack your madvideo gaming skills. --Andrew S. The commentary can't get any better. The gameplay is outstanding, too. The smooth graphics and player animations. You can use EVERY classic uniform from every team in a game.

This version of THPS2 is terrible. Oh, yeah, it's tons of fun when you haven't played the Playstation version, but when you have, you realize just how pitifull this is. On PS, it's rated T, because they don't blurt out words like "hell" on songs. On Nintedno, It's rated E, so the whole family can enjoy censored versions of songs by Powerman 5000, Papa Roach & Rage Aganist the Machine. And another thing music wise: THEY DON'T EVEN PLAY THE WHOLE SONG! They cut out one of the choruses and the verses (this is an example), and just let it go from there. And the track doesn't go to the next track when it's done; it just plays over and over and over, to where you have to change it yourself every 3 listens. And it's not just the music. There's too much to say, so just play the PS version, PLEASE! ... Read more

Editorial Review As U.S. secret service officer James Patterson, you must embark on highly dangerousmissions, sometimes in the trenches, sometimes undercover, but always alone and alwayseliminating the German Nazi threat. The Nazis are equipped with the same weapons asyou, and they know how to use them. Throw a grenade and watch soldiers scatter, orbetter yet kick a steel pineapple back in their direction before it blows. Missions are divided into challenging--but never frustrating--levels that includeinfiltrating a U-boat pen, destroying a war train while disguised as a German officer, orpowering through a group of nasty Gestapo in a quaint French town. A mixture of stealthfighting and action movie bravado, using each with prudence is essential for successfullycompleting levels. This game is suspenseful, in the way that a good page-turner keeps you up at night. You'll be playing until the end of the level, but when that comes, the briefing for the nextlevel is just too enticing to stop. --Jeff Young Pros: Features Reviews (185)

Amazon.com Review Usually, racing games can get pretty tiring, but Sega GT will hold mostplayers, mainly because there are so many licenses you can earn from the automanufacturers in the game, including Mazda, Suzuki, and other mostly Japaneseauto makers. One of the coolest features here allows you to create a car fromscratch and then see how it stacks up on the track--chances are your firstdesign won't do well. A little more reflection and other effects would have better integrated the carswith their surroundings, and some star-studded songs sure would have been preferable to the game's generic soundtrack. --Robb GuidoPros: Reviews (37)
Eventually, I got used to it and mastered the game. The scenery is the best I've seen. I constantly find myself staring at themassive buildings, rocky canyons, instead of the road. Very great visuals, very slick. The prize of this game is Championship mode. It is amazing. You can buy lots of licensed cars, tune them to perfection, then race them. The idea to get licenses in order to unlock new circuits can be good, but when you just underqualify by .20 seconds, boy it's frustrating. The single race mode is very nice, and adds to the replayability. A very cool part is the "carrozerria" (like a pizzeria), where you can build your own car. But you have to have licenses to do that by racing, blah blah, and you have no more than 3 customizations to build your own car. The CPU doesn't offer that much of a challenge. For example, I was in a Cappucino in an Open race. The Cappucino had only 64 HP and around 600 CC. I raced a Ford Mustang, which has around 400 HP and 5000 HP, and he won by about 10 seconds. And another time I raced someone with the same exact car and I beat them by 5 seconds. Stick to Time Attack for a fun challenge. All in all, a decent racing game. One of the best I've played since Gran Turismo 3. If you have a tight wallet and you want a good racing game that'll keep you occupied for 10-20 hours, pick this one up.
Sega GT seems to be the DreamCast response to the ever-popular Gran Turismo series. For a first attempt at this type of ''driving simulation,'' this is an admirable effort... but there is still a long way to go. On the very positive side, the license tests in Sega GT are VERY generous toward the player; whereas the Gran Turismo series sets very high standards, including keeping at least one wheel on the racing surface at all times and not permitting any contact with walls or barriers or other obstacles, the only requirement in the Sega GT license tests is that the player complete a lap at a given course or segment in the time posted. Another great point of Sega GT is the variety of courses available, from two drag strips to a high-speed course reminiscent of the Pennsylvania Turnpike through the tunnels of the Allegheny Mountains to a wintry course to several desert-based courses between tall rock cliffs. The ability for players to create their own cars (which requires A LOT of money) is a novel addition to a ''driving simulation,'' and there are specific licenses and races for which these Original Cars can only compete. Finally, the use of sponsors is great; for each race/series win, each sponsor pays a given amount of money, which can thus turn low-paying races into nice cash machines if a player can accumulate a lot of sponsors. On the down side, Sega GT has some nice cars. but there are relatively few of them, especially compared to Gran Turismo 2. The navigation of the Car Shop to buy the cars (new and used cars are available) is a bit awkward. While there are a lot of tuning parts which can be purchased, there is little effect gained or lost in making adjustments. Finally, car control in general is awkward at best, especially with high-horsepower vehicles; many high-horsepower cars are simply impossible to drive at competitive speeds. For those with young children, Sega GT will be good for the kids as well as the parents - especially since there are numerous pre-owned DreamCasts and associated games available (at least in the States) for fairly low prices. However, those looking for a true ''driving simulation'' would be much better served by acquiring Gran Turismo 2 (for PlayStation/PSOne) and/or Gran Turismo 3 (for PlayStation2).

Editorial Review While Tee Off does require some basic golf knowledge, it uses astandardized control scheme which even those who've never played video golf willbe able to pick up on right away. In addition to customizable difficulty levels,Tee Off offers various modes of play, including gate ball (think croquetin cyberspace) and world tour, which rewards players' high scores by "unlocking"new characters and equipment. Admittedly, Tee Off isn't for devotees of more simulation-oriented golftitles, as they'll probably pass it off as kiddie fare. However, casual videogolfers and those new to the armchair sport are in for one heck of a good timeon the links. --Joe Hon Pros: Reviews (21)

Amazon.com Product Description Reviews (9)
As adventure games go this one is pretty straight forward and doesn't require a mensa membership to make significant progress. The bulk of the tasks in the game are not too hard to figure out, yet there are a few stumpers in there as well. Gameplay is clear. You can move the main character around the current screen and either interact with other characters, manipulate objects, or go to other screens. The GBA rendering is nice. There are some dialog scenes which are easy to speed through if you wish although you occasionaly get critical information via dialog. There is one scene in which having the sound turned up might provide some value.Towards the end of the adventure, gameplay is not just puzzles but also reacting quickly to events. Some dislikes: This is a good game to play and will definitely keep you entertained. It is easy enough to keep you engaged but hard enough to make you work for it.
overall:
The background is gorgeous, all hand drawn, the commentary is funny and witty, (press "B" on objects, some comments can be really hilarious like on the seats in the church in Paris)The plot can be surprisingly tense, and suspenseful, esspecially when you discover you can die, so save often. If you liked this game, I'd definately suggest the book "Saving the Queen" by William F. Buckley, its just as good, but our hero is with the CIA and deals with some good old fashioned "Cold War" stuff, instead of Knights of the round table.Even if you don't read much or dissagree with WFB's politics, PLEASE READ!!! You don't know what your missing.

Amazon.com Review In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players were introduced to the manual--amove that greatly revolutionized the series' gameplay. This installmentintroduces the revert, and while it isn't as significant an addition as themanual, it does add another layer to the already deep trick system. The gamefeatures solid graphics, but a level of detail was sacrificed in order to makethe game's levels so large. There are a few frame skips and polygon clips, butthese occasions are rare and do not overshadow the stellar gameplay. Career mode is as deep as ever, with eight objective-filled levels. In thissingle-player mode, players traverse their way through some brilliantly designedcourses to achieve high scores, find the letters to the word "skate," findhidden videotapes, and interact with level-specific objects. Two players canparticipate in the five multiplayer minigames, which include king of the hill, horse, and trick attack. Up to four players can join Internet or LAN gamesthrough the use of the PS2 Network Adapter or numerous USB devices. SupportedUSB Ethernet adapters include LinkSys EtherFast USB100TX, D-Link DSB-650TX, SMCEZNET-USB 2102, and SOHOware NUB100. Supported USB modems include Zoom FaxModem2985L, Pocket NetSurfer NMT00700, MultiTech MT5634ZBA, and ActiontecUSB56012-01CW. USB keyboards are also supported, enabling players to type trash online. We tested Internet play using the LinkSys and a DSL modem; the action was verysmooth with no noticeable lag. On its own, this is a top-shelf title, butconsidering its Internet capabilities, there's no reason for fans of sports, action, and platform games not to own Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. This gamewill satisfy them all. --Raymond M. Padilla Pros: Reviews (234)

Amazon.com Review In terms of playability, EA Sports has added some nice new features. Players arerewarded with collectable in-game Madden Cards by performing certain tasks, which can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and legendaryNFL teams. Also, you can trade those cards with friends using the PlayStationmemory card. Enhancing the replayability of Madden NFL 2001 is a newtwo-minute drill feature that allows up to 10 players to compete for the highestscore. The game does have a couple of trouble areas. The CPU play isn't all thatsynched with the gameplay, resulting in some very strange calls and plays. JohnMadden's commentary is stocked with only a few phrases, which are used adnauseam. While not perfect, the sound effects and crowd noises are stillpreferable to the whiny blips of the N64 version. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Reviews (45)
