Editorial Review

An excellent science-fiction-themed strategy game with role-playingelements, Front Mission 3 is the first installment of the popularJapanese series to make it stateside. In a future where giant robots known as"Wanzers" are the war machines of choice, you are cast as a civilian test pilotwho gets swept up in an international military conspiracy surrounding a weaponof mass destruction. The majority of the storytelling occurs via cut scenes andmenu-driven "event" screens, with the game's "network"--a virtual computer thatsimulates Web and e-mail, among other things--providing additional backgroundinformation and character interaction.

Front Mission 3 features a rich battle system that makes the game easy tolearn but hard to put down. The different models of Wanzers can be used "as is"or modified to change their appearance, capabilities, and equipment; since aWanzer and its pilot are controlled as one unit in battle, the pilot's battleskills and experience come into play when pairing them off during pre-battlesetup. Pilots can, however, eject from Wanzers during battle and boardunoccupied ones, or even fight on their own, David and Goliath style. Battlesare turn-based and take place in 3-D isometric environments, which can berotated to provide a better perspective. When combat occurs, the viewpointchanges to close-ups shown from various camera angles. While the battles arerelatively short, Front Mission 3 makes up for their brevity withquantity, packing well over 100 hours of highly addictive gameplay on its onedisc. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Topnotch turn-based strategy battles
  • Intriguing storyline filled with melodrama and plot twists
  • Highly stylized art design
  • "Double feature" scenario adds replay value
Cons:
  • Some "network" features are more trouble than they're worth

1-0 out of 5 stars Carrying Crap More Like It!!
When first setting eyes on this case I was happier then a gay school boy until realizing its worthelss. Without any thoughts I bought it thinking it would be ideal for trips and long gaming ours on the road...Instead I ended the buy with turmoil. When I went to Chicago for a trip to a gaming convention I brought my Playstation 2 in the case. "Yes I can use it" I thought when unpackaging it. When I lifted the handle it instantly broke like some cheap chinese plastic. I was pissed but I still had hope. Thinking that the broken handle might have been a defect in my product I simply took the bag along. When pulling it out into my hotel I realized that it was lighter then it ever was. With a PS2 2 controllers and 3 games I thought It would be heavier. I then examined the bag closer...Hmmm it seems as if a hole on one of the side pockets had emerged. Thus I lost three of my favorite games. The hole was obviously due to cheap cloth issues that were used to make the bag. Again was angered but still stayed an optimist. Taking the bag to the convention to set up my deck (Kiosk-like booth) I sat the bag down and pulled on the zipper ever so slightly. What do you know its jammed. So I pulled a bit harder. Eventually it opened but was dissassembled from the other zipper string. "Oh Hell!!" I screamed and took my PS2 out of the bag and all the accessories and threw the bag in the trash. While coming home I put all my gear in a plastic back (Which ironically enough did not rip tear etc.). When coming back home I was dissapointed in my new carrying case inhope of a refund the dic*holes at Best Buy declined. So don't put yourself through this. If a plastic bag is more durable then the item that you are planning to buy, go for the plastic bag. This item is a piece of shi* and unless you want to spend $20 or $40 as I did then go for it. Just remember you could buy a new game and carry your PS2 in a plastic bag for only 10 cents.

i was walkng to my friends house when all of a sudden the seam on the bag just ripped and my ps2 broke it was actually beyond repair and lucky my parents are rich because they bought me a newone

5-0 out of 5 stars PS2 Carrying Case
I bought this case about 7 months ago and I fell in love with it.When traveling back and forth to Detroit, MI, this bag made carrying around my PS2 a breeze.Instead of tucking it away in my luggage where it might get damaged, I could keep it safe right next to me.I noticed that most reviewers said that they could only fit 4 games inside of the PS2 case.Well, I manage to fit about 8-10 if I pack my PS2 in the case just right. It's all a matter of packing. This case is also very padded and comes with a secure strap to clip it down to the main compartment.

Overall, this is the best carrying case I have ever bought.I definitely give this best a 5-star rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars imjust looking at revews
it sounds pritty good but the bad thing is it only holds 4 games (i have 18)and that was not a type problem

5-0 out of 5 stars Best PS2 Case
I first looked at this case at Electronics Boutique for $30 and decided not to buy it.I'm glad I did because I found it at Walmart a week later on sale for $15.

It's a little tight, but that's good because it won't slide around in there. It's supposed to hold 4 controllers, but I can only fit 2 in there because I have the network adaptor. But that's fine because I only have 2 controllers. It would be nice if it could hold a few more games (it only holds 4), but for $15, I'd still buy it.

I would recommend this case for anyone who doesn't have a lot of games. If you have a lot of games, controllers, and other accessories, you might want to consider the aluminum case. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

It's not easy being a child of a god. Your character quickly comes tothis conclusion after being imprisoned and tortured by a wizard with anunhealthy interest in your parentage. So begins Baldur's Gate II: Shadows ofAmn, an ambitious role-playing game based on the Advanced Dungeons &Dragons game.

Shadows of Amn is not really a sequel to Baldur's Gate. Instead,Baldur's Gate was merely a prelude to Shadows of Amn. Shadows ofAmn develops the plot lines, characters, and events introduced in the firstgame into a mature, genuinely interesting fantasy tale. Players who thought theoriginal game shallow will be pleasantly surprised by Shadows of Amn'sbold story arcs. Major events are afoot, and the characters' choices have a realimpact on the Forgotten Realms.

In the same way, Baldur's Gate served as a proving ground for the refinedgame mechanics evident in Shadows of Amn. The game's artificialintelligence has been vastly improved, and players have many more choices forNPC AI scripts and party communication. Keeping with Shadows of Amn's moremature theme, the party interaction even includes possible love interests foryour character.

Those who played through the original Baldur's Gate can import theircharacter into Shadows of Amn, or can choose to create a new character.Character kits such as the Mageslayer and Swashbuckler add variety, and the gameeven includes the Monk, Sorcerer, Barbarian, and Half-Orc options from the newDungeons & Dragons 3rdEdition rules. Whether you import an old character or create a new one, you'll begin the game as a fairly advanced character--unlike most RPGs, youwon't have to spend hours slaying puny critters and instead are plunged into ahigh-stakes plot against powerful foes.

A strong plot backed by strong technology makes Shadows of Amn stand outas one of the best RPGs we've ever played. Fans of AD&D will love the classicAD&D feel, and fans of the popular Forgotten Realms setting will delight in thepeople, places, and politics found in Shadows of Amn. --MichaelFehlauer

Pros:

  • High-level power gaming
  • Quality voice work
  • Improves the already great Baldur's Gate interface
  • Character kits and D&D 3rd Edition races and classes add variety
  • Advances the plot begun in Baldur's Gate
Cons:
  • Based on obsolete AD&D 2nd Edition rules
  • Character animations are stiff
  • Player's character starts out less powerful than other party members

See if this story line sounds familiar. You're part of an outcastmercenary class that upstanding folk don't want around until there's trouble. You're sent on a mission alongside an innocent, idealistic woman with whom youdon't immediately get along. Forces of darkness, safely contained untilrecently, have escaped and are threatening a world-ending clash with the forcesof light unless you successfully intercede. This is one of the safest templatesfor console role-playing games, and it pretty much covers the story inGrandia II.

Thankfully, everything else in the game is fresh and provides hours upon hoursof fun. The backdrops and character designs are colorful without being flashy, the game has a great pace (for an RPG), and players never have to stand aroundtoo long looking for the next thing to do. Even the writing, within itscookie-cutter plot, is smart, well translated, and occasionally funny.

The game's strongest element, however, is its battle system. Taking the best ofturn-based and real-time battle engines, Grandia II forces you to chooseyour moves carefully with respect to timing and position. The battles are verysimple in the beginning, but grow increasingly complex as you fight largernumbers of monsters with a growing party of allies. How you meet yourencounters--whether you initiate the fight, are ambushed, or meet headon--affects both the timing of the blows and the positions of the contestants.Battles emphasize counterattacks and combination blows, but you'll soon findthat movement and defense keep you alive against the tougher enemies. Elementalmagic, items, and skill books are just icing on the cake. Even if the battles dogrow old, the random fights are fairly easy to avoid, and a versatile AI optionlets you use cruise control through the rest.

Grandia II may be just the traditional role-playing game for whichDreamcast owners have been waiting. The question of whether it's too traditionaldoesn't matter, as it offers a better experience than most that have comebefore. --Porter B. Hall

Note: This review refers to the Dreamcast version of the game.

Pros:

  • Battle system creates interesting, complex fights
  • Solid, traditional role-playing game for a system with few others in thegenre
Cons:

Amazon.com Review

As one of the first turn-based strategy/war games for the PlayStation2, Ring of Red is surprisingly rewarding for wannabe armchair generals looking to spend time in the heat of battle. You'll find that the war over an alternate-history Japan is surprisingly engrossing and very, very different from most PS2 titles.

Ring of Red's scenario is this: Japan didn't surrender to end World War II, and instead finds itself fighting a civil war that divides the country by pitting Soviet- and American-backed troops against each other. By the '60s, gas-powered Armored Fighting Walkers (read: giant mechs) do much of the damage across the country. You, as ahalf-Japanese, half-German pilot named Masami Weizegger, have the task of leading your American-backed squad into a long, explosive campaign that brings with it a gripping story.

Combat is split between maps for moving and placing mechs on the battleground and a real-time mode for actual fighting. Though the game is deep, with many commands to learn, Ring of Red feels just right for the Dual Shock 2 controller. The tense, swift battles are enough to make even hardened gamers sweat, and once you learn to survive them, you're rewarded with a sense of accomplishment.

Aesthetically, Ring of Red is a great-looking (and sounding) game that makes mech combat look real. Despite its somewhat boring dialogue and repetitive battle cutscenes, most gamers will play this title for a good long while. It won't make a lot of new converts to strategy gaming, but for many patient gamers, it's a great title that is different from the pack. Just be prepared for a long--yet fun--war over the future of Japan. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Very good graphics and sound bring atmosphere to the battles
  • Easy-to-use control scheme
  • Deep yet fun strategy gameplay

Cons:

  • Very long battles will turn off gamers looking for a quick fix
  • Repetitive in-battle cutscenes cannot be skipped
  • Sloppy script makes most characters seem somewhat dull

4-0 out of 5 stars A game for people who prefer play over graphics
If there was a contest for ugliest PS2 game ever made, Ring of Red would probably take the cake.

Visual prowess, however, is not everything. Ring of Red is probably the most challenging game I have ever set my sights upon. It's a turn-based stratgey in the vein of Front Mission 3 or Mechwarrior. The only difference is intead of just exchanging blows on an attack, you engage in a rather elaborate battle, any of which could turn easily turn surprisingly sucsessful or incredibly sour.

This game is very very long, and that's either good or bad depending on your opinions. You are able to save mid-battle and pick up later where you left off, (though keep in mind the game deletes the save file when you load it) but if you die you need to start the while round over. One round averages me about 3 or 4 hours, a lot of that time being attributed to the repetative animations of soldiers' actions, which is my only complaint about this game.

If you're looking for an armchair strategy you can rent a few times and put under your belt, this isn't for you. If you feel like spending 30 bucks on a game that's going to take you a while to get through, go for it. Don't use a gameshark, don't save the mid-battle files to a second memory card so you can cheat if you screw up. Beat this game legitamately, (as time consuming and frustrating as it might get) and when those end credits roll, it will be that much more satisfying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Try it first.
This is not your typical game but very appealing. You might want to borrow or rent it before you purchase it.I have had many friends love it and some hate it.It's up to you but it would be wise to try it first! The gameplay can be very slow and time consuming in parts but for the most part it keeps a o.k. pace.

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak
This is an awful game. The gameplay is really weak.I was hoping that this might be a great strategy game for the PS2, but it was a very lame action game that tries to throw in some strategy aspects and fails at both attempts. You control a group of mecs and the strategy lies in moving them around a "chess board" type landscape. The action part of the game involves you deciding when you want to shoot the other mec.Basically, a timer starts ticking, and as the seconds pass, your accuracy rating increases. If you shoot too early, you will probably miss the other mec.If you wait too long, the other mecc will hit you first and throw you off guard, resetting the accuracy gague. That's it.Finally, you top that off with the fact that there are truly awful cutscenes after every move and there is no way to bypass them. This game is a big thumbs down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finished feeling empty...
Ring of Red is an incredible strategy game by Konami (makers of everything from Contra on the NES to Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PS2.)This game will take well over 30-40 hours to play for you marathon gamers.I was rather unhappy with the ending for it ended abruptly.I hope Ring of Red II will come out soon to tie up the loose ends in this one.A couple things that would benefit this game would be some sort of voice dialouge, the ability to forward through the intermissions quicker, and more special abilities. All in all this was a fun game to play and an excellent strategy for the PS2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mechs, Military Might, and Me
Personally, I can't understand why anyone wouldn't like this game. It has everything a person needs from their interactive entertainment. This includes:
1) Nice effects that, contrary to some reviews, do manage to keep your attention. These range from the mechanized tanks themselves moving through their attack patterns, seasonal change-ups, support troops that have their own moves, and some nice looking backgrounds to accent your battles.
2) A degree of simplification in the basic controls that let the beginner play, plus the addition of higher degrees of strategy that don't allow you to bore too easily. Your vehicles, an ever increasing number of oddities meshing robots with tanks, all have specialized maneuvers such as Dodging and Punching other mechs, plus an optimum strike area. The troops further accent this, letting you add in different tactical approaches (do I want to have men equipped with homing missiles, or do I need someone to cut those lines ensnaring my legs?), thereby customizing your approach. Some even allow you to use different types of shells with your mech, allowing degrees of damage to either the enemy robots or the accompanying troops.
3) The enemies do become better as the game moves on. They start to display the ability to think somewhat, plus they develop specialized moves of their own. This is something that can be a bit of a burden, too, with combat taking lots of those 90 second slots.
Anyhow, this is only a little of what the game has to offer, and leaves out much of the story plotting, plus the nice take on post World War 2 worldwide events. If you like Mechs and military showings, this is for you. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Monster Rancher 2 is the sequel to one of the strangestand most innovative games ever produced. It is a virtual pet simulatorin many ways, but transcends that description by virtue of its variedgameplay elements and combat-oriented theme. The game begins with thecreation of a monster, which is accomplished by inserting any CD (evenan audio CD) into the PlayStation. A unique monster is generated fromthe data that is imbedded on each CD. Once you have your uniqueCD-generated beast, it's time to go to the ranch for training. With eachtraining session, you will raise your monster stamina and strengthstatistics, which gives each particular monster a better chance forsuccess in the game's exciting combat mode.

Sending an undisciplined monster into the arena is a recipe for failure,so much of our playing time involved training our creations and watchingthem develop into lethal, confident juggernauts. No two monsters are thesame, and each develops its own unique personality as the gameprogresses. We became more attached to this game's creations than othergames in the genre because of this well-executed feature. --T. ByrlBaker

Pros:

  • Unlimited replay potential
  • Better graphics than before
Cons:
  • Training requires much patience

I enjoy this game alot because of the emazing variety of monsters and the use of your outher C.D's to get more monsters. I enjoyed training my creatures and scolding or praseing my monster after training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster Rancher 2
Well, if you've ever played animal games, you might like this one. You have a goal to acheive by breeding many monsters to put them in combat for many different reasons. Just make sure you don't run out of money- you'll lose the game! When you figure out that you can unlock monsters with all the CDs in your home, you'll go outside, going door by door asking everybody and anybody to borrow CDs. But be warned. Monsters can and will die due to harsh treatment, so be careful.

1-0 out of 5 stars MonsterRancher2
I gave this one star because the seller sent us a scratched and damaged game and it wouldn't work, so, I couldn't even play it! One look at the cd and it would be evident that the product that was received was in poor shape and I would never buy anything from them again and would not encourage others to either--since they send sub-standard products to hard-working consumers who aren't being paid to examine their products, just receive them in terrible condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Addiction
This game is dangerous! It's impossible to stop playing. Monster Rancher 2 was the first Monster Rancher game that I had ever played, and I was in awe! The idea of removing the disc so often (and have the game still work) was foreign to me, but I loved it. Although spinning all of those discs can get frustrating sometimes, you quickly get the hang of it. (I've spent up to 6 hours at a time removing the game, putting in a CD, etc!) The result of your hard work is quite rewarding. Some of the great features of this game: 408 total different monsters; Combining monsters; Monster playtime (have snowball fights!); Long gameplay; FUN! This is by far my favorite Monster Rancher game!

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster Rancher 2
Monster Rancher 2 is a fun game, but it's different from Monster Rancher 3 and Monster Rancher Advance, but almost the same as Monster Rancher 1. The thing is you can't unlick a monster and keep it in your book(in Monster Rancher 3 it's an encyclopedia.) It is the hardest of the three... Although, you usually dont't get succsesses and never get greats. Of the three, not counting Monster Rancher 1, is the best Monster Rancher Game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not as hard as everyone makes it seem
great game with lots of hidden levels/characters. great gameplay and lots of action. its only hard until you realize how everything works. once you do its just tons of fun. and for all of those people out there that like the federation forces...well you can unlock almost all of them including some pretty awesome gundams...any gundam fan should buy this. TONS of special features.

5-0 out of 5 stars so so hard but very very fun
This game is one of the most difficultest game that i have but it a pretty cool and fun game!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Hard
I've had this game for about a year and I LOVE it! It's fun, challenging, and long. But it's a bit too hard. Like on mission 6. One hit from that mobile suit's beam rifle and BOOM! How are you supposed to fight something like that? I FINALLY got past it after about 13 tries. It's a great game, but I would have liked it more if it was a bit easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Yet !!!
I love this game 10 out of 5 stars but I dont recomend renting this one because its a long one. Dont underestimate it if you cant get past the 6th level (THE GUNDAM one) because the real fun doesnt start until you've come across a dom. It's graphics are mind boggleing along with some tight game play, and a bitter taste of stratagy makes this one a real challenge even for a true gundam geek. I've had it for over 6 months (not includeing the 6 game rentals)and havent beaten it until a little while ago, and I think that shows you what a challenge it is learn how to set up routes or know what support is best for each specific mission. The enenmies in this one are equal to you in all aspects of the game like fire power or armor and the farther you go the the more relient your allies are of you with your skills. There are some really cool new machines like the Gundam Mudrock or the GM S-armor. So, with all of these traites I think this is the best one out there (compared to FED. vs ZEON or Journey to Jaburo.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Mechanized, squad-based action at its best!
My little cousin gave me this game since he didn't really play it that much at all. I tried the first few levels and I was hooked. Basically, you experience the One Year War through the perspective of the Principality of Zeon. So, instead of piloting a Gundam, Guntank, or Guncannon you get to pilot the Zeon mobile suits: Zaku I, Zaku II, Gouf, and Dom. This game is kind of like "Rainbow Six", but with giant robots, so fans of that game should get this one. Anyway, you play each mission with 2 or 3 groups and each group could have up to three mobile suits, numbering up to 9 mobile suits at once! However, the safety in numbers routine won't always help, because sometimes the enemy (Earth Federation) outnumbers your team by a long-shot!

There are 13 missions in this game and almost as many training/simulation missions. Sometimes, the simulations can be more difficult than the real missions! Three of the simulations are almost impossible to beat: the first is when you must destroy the Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray. The Gundam is far too powerful to face head-on, so the best way to beat him is to make all the team members surround the Gundam or attack it all at the same time, get behind it while it faces your teammates, and take him out with a well placed bazooka shot or heat hawk slash.(Make sure that all your team leaders aren't killed in missions or you'll fail). The second hard simulation is when you have to destroy the Gouf piloted by Lieutenant Ramba Ral who is guarded by countless Zakus, Magellas, and missile turrets. The third one is when you have to destroy The Black Tri-stars piloting their Doms (which are practically unstoppable.) This game follows the Gundam series and you see how certain incidents in the series affect Zeon and your team, like the death of Captain Garma Zabi, the battles against the Trojan Horse, and the invasion of Jaburo. The gameplay is great and controlling giant mechs is certainly outstanding, so go ahead and buy this game whether you're a Gundam freak, giant robot fan, or cooperative game player. Although some missions are almost impossible, don't give up: if I can do it, you... might be able to do it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work with S video connection
The Game Sound System only works if your TV has RCA connections. I own a Pioneer Plasma Display (ADX1459) with S video inputs and RCA audio inputs. I use this Display for my computer (the few games I play on my pc), TV, DVD player. The system did not work on this Display, but when I connect it to my kids 13 inch TV with RCA inputs for video and audio it works just fine. If you connect using S video connections don't bother getting this cause it will not work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seriously
I read all the reviews above and decided to take advantage of the thanksgiving sale to buy this sound system. I've already seen really small speakers with fantastic sound and hoped this would be close to that. Well, it's not. They're not bad or anything, they're just like having 2 more speakers. It's kind of pointless, might as well invest in real surround sound. These other reviewers must have [junky] TV's to think that the sound is actually improved with this system. If you just want more speakers you can get this, but it doesn't simulate surround sound like it advertises at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars good
i was at first reluctant to buy this game, specially since it has so many bad reviews, but it works excellent for me, the sound quality is priceless, to set it up is quite easy and just takes a minute or two.
a previous reviewer said that the speakers are too close to the ps2 and generate a whole load of heat, well you can just slide the ps2 infront and then they won't be side to side.
the sound quality is unbelievable, the sharpness can leave you breathless.
i think its a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crispier sound is better!!!!!!
After reading a few of the previous reviews from other
gamers, I decided to buy the Intec sound system. While playing
Capcom's recent platform title (MAXIMO), I noticed a big
difference in sound output. The game seemed livelier than before.
Crispier sound is better, I thought to myself. I also tried
Ace Combat4 on my new toy and the sounds from the aircrafts
engines were awesome.
The fact that you can also add other audio components
is definitely a plus! I recommend this system to all avid
gamers who cherish the sounds as well as the graphics of any
PS2 title! Rock On!!!!! INTEC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good game...but
It can get very "stupid" at times, but, there is a lot of fun in the game and many funny parts in it as well. Females might get "offended" by some of the dateing parts in the game, but please remember its only a game ok, even if the game is a bit "pigish". Very good cartoon graphics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Started good,BUT...
This game started out very interesting, but as it wore on, i got bored and just stopped playing.I was interested in the idea of a dating sim incorporated into an RPG, but honestly, it got old.It was funny at first, but eventually i just wanted to get on with the story, and of course the fighting, which was pretty lacking.Overall, it didnt keep my interest, and it left me asking myself, "What the heck was THAT supposed to be?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A videogame for the playas.... =P
The ONLY weak link in this game is the battle system. As a Japanese RPG, it is a very tight package. Plot, storyline, character development, character interaction graphics (dated, but the FMV rivals Square) and the voice acting (perfectly cheesy) is all first rate. The gameplay is excellent and the dating sim more fun than I possibly imagined, and quite possibly this is the funniest game I ever played. I wish the genre was more popular in America.

As I said the battle system is the only weak link. It takes place in 2D, similar to a 2D fighter. The monsters are on the left, your 3 characters on the right.Only your front character can actually fight. The two in the back can only cast support spells, but this battle design makes the battles pretty easy. I don't think I died one time. Nonetheless the rest of the game makes up for this shortcoming. Come on Atlus! Where's the sequel?!?

5-0 out of 5 stars Sodina and Meis Triumph!!
This is the first dating sim/ RPG I played, and I loved it! The characters were kawaii (cute) and memorable. The midi's were enchanting and the graphics were good for a ps game. The voice acting was fine and the items you receive in the game are cool. what more can i say but own this under-rated game!

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm At A Loss
I am totally at a loss for this game.On one hand it has so many original idea's in terms of both plot and gameplay (And has the closest thing to a sim dating game we'll probably ever see), but the way you actually play it leaves me at a loss for words. It's not that the battle system makes no sense, or is bad even, it's the leveling up that confuses me.You don't get stronger when you level up.Your defense gets weaker when you level up.You get more health but you seem to loose more health at the same token too.I'm am at a loss that the creaters of this game could make so many good idea's and make them so poor because they can't figure out commen sense when it comes to leveling up.

If you want an RPG that's original get this...just don't exspect to get anywhere with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best game i've ever played
This game is the best game I have ever played. Its so fun that I have clocked it About 3 Times. It startes of with u {George Stobart}trying to find your girlfriend {Nico} that some guy had poisond with a dart. You get caught up in this legend About 3 stones And how u have to find them to Save the world Against an evel spirit.U have to solve clues,Travel all over the world, save people, stair death in the face, and u even Make a few frinds along the way aswell as a few enemys. You can play as both nico and george at different times of the game.I totally recomend this game .Beleive me u wont be disapointted

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable
It makes a great sequel. Lots of fans of Broken Sword say it's not nearly as good as its predeccesor but I think it's equally good. Though the graphics are a little groggy on the playstation version they still are quite nice. The game is undoubtedly an adventure and strategy type game. There is absoulutely no action or fighting. That does not automatically mean it has no suspense. To fight you have to look at your suroundings and choose what to use on your opponet. George(main character) takes it over from there. Simple?yes. It has simple 2-D graphics and point and click control. After all it was originally a PC game. Plus it is a bit old. In fact I was only 6 when it first came out in 1997. I would type more but i'm getting bored. If you want to check it out you should just try buying it from here because it's most likely no where else. You most likely won't be able to rent it from anywhere. You should definetly check it out. It can be quite hard and frustrating at times so you should check out www... for walkthroughs and hints. It also has a great forum with a lot of great people from all over the world. The game itself was actually made in Europe somewhere. Sorry I couldn't give you anymore information. Thanks for reading my review.....CU.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, great follow up
Broken Sword two follows George Stobbart and Nico as they continue their adventures. In this sequel the storyline remains equally intricate. Stobbart is your average jack-of-all-trades and he has that knack of using everyday objects to do extraordinary things. You also get the oppurtunity to control Nico, something you don't get in Broken Sword 1.

There are quite a few puzzles which are difficult to solve and require some lateral thinking. There is also an added danger factor. But the game is thoroughly enjoyable and I'd reccomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great follow up
This game is an excellent sequel to the first Broken Sword (aka Circle of Blood). The 2D graphics are the same, which is great. If you can find this game for the PC, then grab it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very decent adventure
I like this game a lot - the story about old mayan religion is very interesting and deep. You take on the role as George Stobbard who has to find his girlfriend who seemingly was kidnapped by a mayan indian. As the story unfolds you'll be tangled up in everything from drug smuggling to ghosts to the possible end of the world.

The puzzles are usually well though out, though some of them seem a little obscure. What really stands out is the voice acting and music - both very well done. The humour is also great and the graphics is classy.

The only real problem is that the story, while good, sometimes drags on a little too long and it's easy to lose interest if you're not focused. With that said though; the game is very good and there are parts of the story that are truely creepy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This ones a little better.
In 1991, arcades were, to put it mildly, suffering. Most games in that era were shooters, or bland walk-to-the-right-and-hit-buttons-fast beat 'em ups. Capcom released a quiet sequel to one of its games and consequently changed the way we play. The game, of course, was Street Fighter II. SF2 and its various sequels spawned an arcade revolution, the effects of which are still felt to this very day. Capcom's previous Street Fighter collection contained some of the later Street Fighter titles. This second pack contains the original Street Fighter 2, and its two upgrades, SF2: Champion Edition, and SF2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting. The games have translated onto the PlayStation very well, which, given that the arcade version's engine was programmed in 1991, isn't too surprising. The games all look, sound, and play like their arcade counterparts. There is also a small museum-type section that contains info and art from the games. The gameplay holds up nicely after all these years. While it may seem a bit plain and a little sluggish compared to some of the games we've seen since, these games are still the chess of the fighting game world. Everything else is merely checkers. I was immediately reminded of the time (and, ouch, the money) I spent in arcades with these three games. The weeks of practice it took for me to become a respectable player. The thirty or so times that I just never went back to school after lunch, because I was stuck at a pizza place with a few friends, glued to Champion Edition. Graphically, the game does look dated, even though Capcom has been using roughly the same character graphics for several years now. The soundtrack is still really good. These classic tunes can be remixed forever, but the originals still sound the best. The PlayStation also makes a smooth transition from the normal to the hyped-up "near-death" music with nearly no load time. However, the game does have a significant, though not overbearing load between fights. Forget the other Street Fighter Collection. This is the volume that is actually worth owning. Those of you who spent hundreds of dollars on these three games when they first came out owe it to yourselves to have a copy of this around, even if only for posterity's sake. You never know when you'll want to see how well those skills hold up against an old friend. Those of you that haven't played these games really should at least rent this collection. Consider it a history lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Love
This game started it all. It maybe limited to graphics from back in the day, but you gotta admit that if you love fighting games, this one got you hooked. I remember playing this in the arcade for hours then comeing home and playing this on my SNES for hours as well. Simply put, one of the best fighting games of all time, a timeless classic in my honest opinion!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars DULL!
this collection is so boring all it contains is street fighter the world warrior, street fighter champion edition and street fighter turbo hyper fighting. those street fighters are outdated they were release far back in 1991 and 1992.and the gameplay is soooo slow the only one you might play is turbo hyper fighting. because the other two gameplay is very slow. this collection is dull, if i were you i would take the previous collection which contains super street fighter, super street fighter turbo and alpha 2 gold those games are much better and much faster. that is the better collection this volume2 collection [is no good].

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome in every respect
3 arcade perfect conversions in 1 CD. The original fighter that started the whole fighting genre. Great fighting action with incredibly intelligent A.I. High replay value. Almost impossible to find this game. Just plain fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars super nintendos street fighter2s are harder and cheaper
I always like the street fighter games best on super because thay are harder. than collection2 are fun but not hard and you are crazy if you are going to spend a lot money on this one.people sell it for to much money. I have both collection if you like street fighter and have super look for those on super.but the difrents is on the collection you get three difrent tipes of street figther.I say this is the best collection it is more like the arcade. thank you for reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the 3rd edition PC Game!
Well,OK,first off,I have both WWTBAM 3rd edition for PC,and Playstation, but if I had to chose which one I would rather play, definetly Playstation! It moves faster a different commentary by Regis than the 3rd editon PC,and he auctually sounds awake! Unlike the 3rd PC version they slapped together overnight to throw on the shelves by Monday, this may not have the question downloads for the net,but I don't feel I'm missing out by playing this on PS,the question set downloads aren't all that great...Another great thing about it on the Playstation is they restored the sound effects the 3rd edition for PC were lacking, and the PS version moves much faster and quicker stops between questions, which I think they could easily do without completely. The only thing I disliked is that they never changed the graphics...hopefully it they will beef up the graphics when the 4th edition comes out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Pleased in Ohio
I like this game a lot but I feel it is a little high priced & isn't a game (6) yr olds can play unless you have a Highly intelligent child! Also a handful of the same ? pop up somewhat frequently!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad!
A new third edition for playstation. The game is not bad. It is a lot of fun to play. Every time you play it, you never want to stop until you win the million. But there are a few bad things about this game. It still is a little slow like the second edition for playstation, some of the phone a friends don't give you an answer because they don't know it, most of the questions are really tough, it only gives you 30 seconds to answer, you can't download new questions like the computer version, and there are only 100 more questions than the second edition. But overall the game is fun. Too bad I couldn't give it 5 stars because of those bad things. But still I encourage everyone to buy it. The music and the effects makes it seem so real. So Let's play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 3rd Edition! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Addictive once you get started
I actually missed this game when it first came out and actually bought it about a month ago. This game makes a pretty poor first impression. The first few battles are coma inducing boring because you can't really do much. Also the storyline is sort of iffy at the beginning since they try to jam a whole bunch of stuff in your head at once, and you'll probably get confused. However once things get going this game is really fun.The game has been compared to FFT a lot, but the actual battle engine is more like Front Mission 3.It even has the same mini-cut scene when you attack. They characters taunt each others during the cut-scenes which can be really funny, but it is hard to see both the taunt and the attack sometimes. You gain new abilities by upgrading your stats, and equipping gems to your ATAC (Giant Mec) The stronger the skill the more AP (Action Points) it costs, and the more FP (Fatigue points) you use. When your FP reaches 100 your character is frozen for one turn, and can't dodge which can be rough.Overall battles aren't overly complicated, but they are very amusing and can get pretty intense toward the end. You'll start to get obsessed with getting certain characters to get their ultimate attacks. Most of the ATAC's look the same, but their are enough unique ones to keep it interesting. This game has three seperate storylines for you to go through. The storyline you get is based on certain requirements that you fufil in the game. All three are of medium length so it's a pretty long game if you add them all togather. It also has good replay value since their is 5 different endings, you will have to go through the game again to get them all (although one you may not want to get). The storyline is interesting, its not ground-breaking, but its pretty good, and can be funny at times. Its fun to see different characters become allies and enemies depending on your choices.Overall I think this game is very fun and should be in any Strategy/RPG fans collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
This game rocks. It looks like you're watching cartoons in the battle scene. This game is even better than Final Fantasy Tactics. The game has better stories and music.I hope they make a sequel to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best games ever
This game is one of the best fantasy games I've ever played! It's graphics arnt anything to brag about but it has a great story! If you like games with multiple endings and a great story buy this game!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Has its flaws, but all in all, a great game.
Being a fan of Working Designs, I must admit that I was a bit biased when I first played this game. But all personal preferences aside, this game is one that no RPG/Strategy fan should miss! Think Final Fantasy Tactics meets Front Mission 3 meets Brigandine. I personnally did not like Brigandine, but I must state a resemblance in the battle scenes. The standard game consists of sprite-based mechs, called ATACs, moving about a 3-D polygonal field. Once you enter a battle, the veiw switches to a fully polygonal, 3-D action scene. The different attacks are interesting to watch, but there is an option to turn them off, in case they get repetitive. Beleive me, they WILL get repetitive, until you learn new attacks. The battle system is quite smart, using stats like agility, mech ability, weapon, and relative position to determine damage and percent of success. The music gets repetitive, but the intro and title screen songs are CD quality, and fairly catchy. The story scenes between battles use text-based conversations, and, although they're helpful to the story, they tend to be quite boring and will have you tapping the controller, waiting to get to the next battle. If you do take the time to read the conversations, you will find a compelling story about a young boy and his friends trying to bring peace to the world. Common story, but it has enough plot twists and player-based decisions to stand out from the crowd. There are five different endings, almost 60 missions, and 32 different ATACs to see. You'll have to play through the game many times to see all the missions, ATACs, and endings. The game itself is very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. If you liked FFT, I'm sure you'll like Vanguard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very, Very Addictive!
When I first got this game i thought it wasn't going to that good, only getting around three stars from. It is a very fun game if you can get past some of the characters,(a little fat boy who drives a mech thing), and the annoying music. But, you will find yourself humming the tunes! The battle system is similair to Final Fantsy Tatics and Vandal Hearts, but you are in knight looking mechs. This game is also very addictive, you will be in your room for DAYS! Buy this game, but buy Final Fantsy Tatics first. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Alien and the Predator are two of filmdom's most beloved and fearedcreations, and fans have been clamoring for a matchup between the two speciesfor years. Their dreams were teased by a brief shot of an alien skull in thePredator's trophy room in Predator 2, indulged by several uneven pairingsin comic books, and finally fulfilled in Rebellion's underrated Aliens vs.Predator video game. Fox Interactive, teamed this time with developerMonolith, delights these fans again with Aliens vs. Predator 2, andthe result is easily one of the most intense 3-D shooters ever released.

Like in the first game, there are three distinct campaigns. One lets you play asthe Predator, another as an Alien, and a third as the overconfident humans theyprey upon. This time out the stories are much more detailed, even crossing overin interesting ways. The plot concerns some arrogant human scientists, a groupof heroic marines, a rogue Predator, and the faceless Alien horde found onLV-1201 (the planet from the first two Alien films).

As a human, you play a fearless roughneck sent to check things out and performmissions. This generally involves rescuing fellow marines, recon work, restoringpower to various systems, and trying to stay alive against fast-moving killingmachines with acid for blood and nasty dispositions. You're armed with theincredible pulse rifle from the films, other weapons such as a knife and a smartgun (which automatically locks onto targets for you), a tension-inducing motiontracker, and a shoulder-mounted flashlight that casts eerie shadows. ThePredator is armed with his shoulder cannon, cloaking device, spear, and hisfamous wrist claws.

The Alien campaign is the most interesting as it first casts you as thespiderlike face hugger. You've got to roam the corridors looking for a solitaryvictim. Once you implant a human, you play the small and snakelikechest-burster, seeking out rodents and other tiny prey so you can quickly molt andgrow into a full-fledged alien. Then all hell breaks loose as the humans becomeyour prey. You can claw, perform a head bite (which restores health), andexecute a fearsome pounce attack that literally explodes the target. Aliens canalso cling and climb on walls, which takes some getting used to, but the effectis exhilarating, as is the hunt.

The graphics are evocative of the films and feature strobe lights, flashing redsand whites, ample darkness, abandoned barricades, sputtering ruined equipment, and horrific scenes of carnage. The music rises and falls with the drama anddraws heavily from the Alien films in particular. And the game is relentlesslycreepy, whether or not you are the hunter or hunted. The audio is equallyeffective, from screaming humans to screeching alien attackers to the familiarPredator purring chuckle. The game is also filled with often amusingconversations between guards, marines, and scientists.

The three campaigns offer 21 missions, but the wide range of multiplayer gamemodes deserve special mention. The game has legs, no matter which species youprefer, and already a community has sprung up for challenges between gamers.Unfortunately, the Net code is a bit buggy: be sure to download the latestpatch.

Monolith has created a much better game than the previous installment, mainly bypumping up the atmosphere, refining the controls, and making sure the threestories combine into a greater tale of horror and survival. Oh, and mostimportantly to some, the game lets you save whenever you want. Just rememberthis when playing the game--on the Internet, no one can hear you scream, butyour neighbors can. --Bob Andrews

  • Superb atmosphere that evokes the best of the movies
  • Excellent graphics and single-player gaming

  • You need the marines to do a bug hunt in the multiplayer code

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Un-Warned:This game works greaton G5 iMacs!
I'm sure that many people have already read the reviews for this game that say that it works so terribly on this or that Mac.But I'm here, as a sort of public service announcement, to say that with the new Macs, those concerns no longer apply.I had a rougher time with AVP1 Gold running on my Mac than this game! All that aside, this is an incredible game, one of the best FPS games ever created, and very addictive.I beat all three campaigns on Normal, and now I'm trying to beat them all on Hard.Huge difference!
That also being said, I have to mention that the multiplayer STILL doesn't work.As a matter of fact, it freezes up the game if you ever try to go to the multiplayer screen. And this is even with that (very old) patch from Macplay.Which can ONLY be found on their website, by the way. It's not even in Fileplanet!Despite the impossibility of playing multiplayer, I still give this five out of five stars because the game is challenging, loads of fun, scary, and you can really get into your species' state of mind.I can't even tell you how many times I was yelling at the screen when I was the Aliens, saying something like 'BITE HIS HEAD OFF!!!'It's a lot of fun.So buy it!!!It's worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just like the movies!
Even reading all the bad reviews I bought this game. I held my breath when I popped it into my eMac. Things didn't start out good as the game wouldn't install to my brand new external drive. I installed in to the internal drive and started up the game.I chose to be a Predator and the hunt began. I was immediatly awed by how alike it was to the movies. All the preformance issures people had warned about weren't a factor. It ran smooth as anything. I then en-trusted the next 3 hours to getting through the Predator campaign. The game was a blast and I felt like I was in the movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Windows Version is Great! Mac Version is terrible.
Ok... Both the Windows and the Mac version are the same game, one catch though. The Mac version was ported (converted) from the Windows version. The conversion is terrible. The Mac game is CHOPPY, SLOW, UNPLAYABLE on even the fastest computers. The Omni Group did slip-shoddy, piss poor job at porting this game to the Mac platform. Go get the Windows version of this game on Amazon or www.aliensvspredator2.com and play it on your friends PC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review for Alaska Apple Users Group
If you're as big a fan of the Aliens and Predator films as I am, then the recently released port of Aliens versus Predator 2 (AvP2) for Mac OS X is for you! AvP2 is a top-notch first-person shooter from Sierra Studios, published by MacPlay, and touted as the "sequel to one of the most frightening games ever made."

AvP2 is a big game and spans two discs. The installer CD contains a lot of extras - demos (including its predecessor) and documentation to augment the thorough printed manual. The installer will ask you to switch discs once and then you're done. You must have CD 1 inserted to play the game and input the CD key from the box in order to access multiplayer games for the first time.

Opening the AvP2 folder now on your hard drive will reveal a stand-alone server in addition to the game. While I didn't test the server, it's a rarity for Mac games to include one in the box, so it's a welcome extra and a great way to host your own dedicated game.

As soon as you launch the game your desktop will swirl away like a vortex and a title screen will flood in. That first title is the Omni Group's credits and the app launching animation helps you realize that this game was ported by the same talented folks that brought Oni, Freedom Force, and more to Mac OS X.

After the Twentieth Century Fox intro you'll find yourself at the main menu. It offers options for customizing the game and controls, starting a single player or multiplayer game, and exiting. Selecting single player you are presented with three campaign options, which are identified by the three classic AvP species.

Before I move on though, let me explain how cool these menus are. They are actually real-time 3D animations. So if you pause on the main menu, you'll see a dropship swoop by and head for a planet and in the options menu you get to watch an Alien egg twitch and open. There are even character animations for each species - there can be no doubt which species you've selected when there is a Predator making menacing noises right in your face!

Once you've made a selection, you'll find a very detailed environment in which to romp. As long as you're not trying to push the resolution or texture qualities beyond your capabilities, game play will be smooth. Even if you've got an older machine, this game looks great at just 800x600 pixel resolution thanks to its advanced LithTech engine. But the good looks and frame rates are only the beginning.

For those not familiar with the franchise, the big players are the Aliens, Predators, and human marines. Just like it's predecessor, AvP2 has a separate campaign for each species that, though complete on their own, combine to form a single spanning plot of twenty-one missions.

The AvP games are not the only ones to do this, but unlike Warcraft III, for example, the campaigns are not linearly chronological. Instead they feature different tempos and span different time frames. Each intertwines and even intersects in several places. Though they can be played in any order, the stories are meant to build on each other in a certain order, so you'll get the most out of them if you start at the top and work your way down.

It's potentially a very involving form of story telling; and the story isn't bad. It's not on par with Marathon or Myst, but there is a solid plot with a lot of cut scenes and in-game dialog to flesh it out (that's part of why the game takes up a whopping 1.28GB on your hard drive). It also has some very colorful characters to play opposite each species as arch-nemeses. Strangely, while the Aliens and Predators are the antagonists in their respective films, they are the heroes in this game. Despite this apparent contradiction, neither is pulled too far out of character so playing them still feels right.

And boy is it fun to play out those characters! Clinging to the ceiling and dropping on shocked victims as the Alien, collecting trophy skulls as the Predator, and wielding the smart gun as the Marine are all equally fun in their own right. The different species have different tools and abilities at their disposal as well as different ways of seeing and navigating. You will unavoidably find a favorite species since the game play is so different for each.

The first game did a great job of putting the Aliens universe into a game, but just sort of tacked on the Predator. In this game, outdoor environments and trees that you can (and sometimes must) move in, bring a lot more of the Predator aesthetic to the game. The Aliens campaign has a little bit more to offer this time as well - participation in the Aliens full life cycle. That means you start the game as a face hugger seeking a host and even get to recreate one of the most shocking film moments ever by being reborn as a chest burster, ready to feed and grow. According to MacPlay's Mark Cottam, "you'll want to leave the lights on."

Indeed the game is chillingly enjoyable. It's complex enough to provide a lot of replay value too. You can change the difficulty, replay individual levels, or load saved games. You also get really great cross-platform multiplayer support via LAN or the internet. The relationship between the species also makes the multiplayer game types a little bit more interesting than your typical shooter. They include survivor, deathmatch, species team deathmatch, and hunt. This is just as much fun as it was in the first game, but this time the Predators and Aliens have different sub-classes just like the humans. So you can select a Predator with a particular weapons set that matches your style or an Alien that just looks cooler than the others.

All things said, this game has a lot to offer. As a sequel it shares the same structure, sounds, visuals, and general game play of the well-received original while enhancing many features. Though the graphics engine is improved, the biggest difference between the two is stylistic. The first one looked and felt just like the movie Aliens while the sequel acts a lot more like the recent Dark Horse comic books, which have exaggerated character stereotypes and deformed some of the more plausible and realistic intricacies of the series'.

While the story isn't cathartic, it is entertaining and strong enough to carry the games torrent of violence. It's akin to an action film that's worth seeing in the theatre for the effects as long as you don't expect too much from the acting.

If you have no interest in the Aliens or Predator films, you probably won't enjoy this any more than the other popular shooters out there. But if you're even a modest fan, this game is probably worth the expense. At the very least, it should hold you over until the movie is finally released.

1-0 out of 5 stars Umm.. Problem with the review below....
The reviewer below was talking about the PC version of the AVP2. The other reviewers who gave one star for the game are talking about the Mac version. The minimum video card requirement is 32MB for mac. You really need 512MB video card to make this game run smoothly. This is the worst ported game I've ever played. I'm running a dual G5 and it glitches, chops and crashes all the time. Its been over 8 months since Macplay and The Omni Group have known about the multiplayer problem with Mac OS 10.3 and they have done nothing about it. The people at The Omni Group and Macplay should be arrested for taking people's money for an incomplete, unplayable game. Seriously... ... Read more
