Amazon.com Review Like in the first game, there are three distinct campaigns. One lets you play asthe Predator, another as an Alien, and a third as the overconfident humans theyprey upon. This time out the stories are much more detailed, even crossing overin interesting ways. The plot concerns some arrogant human scientists, a groupof heroic marines, a rogue Predator, and the faceless Alien horde found onLV-1201 (the planet from the first two Alien films). As a human, you play a fearless roughneck sent to check things out and performmissions. This generally involves rescuing fellow marines, recon work, restoringpower to various systems, and trying to stay alive against fast-moving killingmachines with acid for blood and nasty dispositions. You're armed with theincredible pulse rifle from the films, other weapons such as a knife and a smartgun (which automatically locks onto targets for you), a tension-inducing motiontracker, and a shoulder-mounted flashlight that casts eerie shadows. ThePredator is armed with his shoulder cannon, cloaking device, spear, and hisfamous wrist claws. The Alien campaign is the most interesting as it first casts you as thespiderlike face hugger. You've got to roam the corridors looking for a solitaryvictim. Once you implant a human, you play the small and snakelikechest-burster, seeking out rodents and other tiny prey so you can quickly molt andgrow into a full-fledged alien. Then all hell breaks loose as the humans becomeyour prey. You can claw, perform a head bite (which restores health), andexecute a fearsome pounce attack that literally explodes the target. Aliens canalso cling and climb on walls, which takes some getting used to, but the effectis exhilarating, as is the hunt. The graphics are evocative of the films and feature strobe lights, flashing redsand whites, ample darkness, abandoned barricades, sputtering ruined equipment, and horrific scenes of carnage. The music rises and falls with the drama anddraws heavily from the Alien films in particular. And the game is relentlesslycreepy, whether or not you are the hunter or hunted. The audio is equallyeffective, from screaming humans to screeching alien attackers to the familiarPredator purring chuckle. The game is also filled with often amusingconversations between guards, marines, and scientists. The three campaigns offer 21 missions, but the wide range of multiplayer gamemodes deserve special mention. The game has legs, no matter which species youprefer, and already a community has sprung up for challenges between gamers.Unfortunately, the Net code is a bit buggy: be sure to download the latestpatch. Monolith has created a much better game than the previous installment, mainly bypumping up the atmosphere, refining the controls, and making sure the threestories combine into a greater tale of horror and survival. Oh, and mostimportantly to some, the game lets you save whenever you want. Just rememberthis when playing the game--on the Internet, no one can hear you scream, butyour neighbors can. --Bob Andrews Pros: Features Reviews (14)

There are also a multitude of add on single player missions, and multiplayer missions out there, and they keep the action level up. I also have modded the rain and storm problem with another add on all long with improved scenery. I am having a blast with the game. I bought it at the same time I got Destroyer Command, and I enjoy them both. Marvin
Well there's none of that here. If Ultimation and Ubi Soft were aiming to create a highly realistic and enjoyable simulation of WWII submarine warfare, they missed. If they intended to create a poorly-coded, antiquated and historically inaccurate pile of unstable hacks, then congratulations. Without a doubt, this was one of the most disappointing games I have ever played, with glaring faults and bugs that should have easily caught by QA. The graphics are mediocre at best, a fact made worse by SH2's maximum resolution of 800x600. Remember the famous storm scene in Das Boot? Well, in SH2, there are two types of weather: sunny and cloudy. There is no rain, no sleet, no spray in your face, nothing. To SH2's credit, the ship and aircraft models are nicely done, but the pyrotechnical effects are severely underwhelming. While the ship's control stations look decent, there is no control view room. Admitedly this is a quibbling point, but a control room would have made you feel as if you were inside a real U-boat, not just gazing at static displays. Which wouldn't be so bad if those stations were actually USEFUL. Everything, navigation, rangefinding, attacking, it can all be done from the map view. This is rarely, if ever, any reason to visit the other stations. Particularly useless is the sound station, in which the game automatically marks down contacts, their bearing, and the type of vessel, so all you get to down is simply turn the dial and listen to the sounds of their engines. Speaking of sound, the game's audio is severely lacking. When I hit an oil tanker with a torpedo, I want it to sound as if I am bringing about the end of humanity itself, not a tinny, stock "boom" that I have heard in countless games before. I have never captained a naval vessel in my life, but I am sure such a vocation includes concepts like "do not run into other ships" and "do not run into ground." Unfortunately, the AI of Silent Hunter 2 seems to have not taken notice of these basic martime rules. In one mission, I was tasked with sinking two British battlecruisers, so I quietly slid into their midst and unleased all my torpedoes against the lead battlecruiser. Shortly afterwards, the trailing battlecruisers gleefully rammed into the flaming hulk of the first battlecruiser, allowing me to pick it off with ease. The nearby destroyers would have been a threat to me had they NOT ALSO RAMMED EACH OTHER AND SUNK coming to attack me! Another time I avoided the H.M.S Ark Royal's destroyer escorts when they ran themselves aground on nearby islands. To add insult to injury, the beached vessels were sticking out of the ground at a 90 degree angle like giant lawn darts. While the AI can be monumentally stupid, it can also pinpoint your exact location 100 meters under the water WITHOUT THE AID OF SONAR and drop depth charges upon your hapless submarine with unerring accuracy. With the possible exception of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000, this has to be one of the most poorly coded simulations I have experienced. While I was successful in running the game under Windows XP, I could rarely complete a mission without a crash to desktop. Other bugs are numerous; sometimes I would lay one waypoint on the map, and the game would lay down 100 waypoints right on top of each other. The pitch of the engines would often remain unchanged, even when I increased speed to flank from a near crawl. It is impossible to play through SH2 without wondering if the developers flunked all their computer science classes. For example, for reasons beyond my explanation, Silent Hunter 2 and vehicle viewer are two seperate programs, so to keep the user from (heaven forbid!) seeing his desktop when switching between the programs, the game actually has a "SH2 Screen Blanker" to blank your screen! Such inexplicable programming practices points to a lack of experience on the developer's part. Even if the game were eventually patched up, I still could not recommend this game. Don't let the current dearth of submarine simulations part you from your hard-earned money. Go play a real WWII submarine sim, like the original Silent Hunter or Aces of the Deep.

The other aspect of the game that stands out is the audio.Much like Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, everything sounds right.Bullets ricocheting off metal sound different than when they hit wood (wood even splinters when hit).Even the ricochet effects change depending on how the shot was fired. As mentioned above, the Ghoul II engine allows for "tear zones" on enemies that come off when shot or stabbed, and there's nothing quite as disturbing as hearing the squirting sound of an enemy's jugular after you take their head off with a shotgun. In short, the audio and visuals of the game are definitely above par.Now for the bad... which is, unfortunately, just about everything else. The game is definitely centered around mindless shooting, although the game designers attempt to convince you otherwise (with "stealth missions").The game is basically one large slaughter-fest.Although this may kick up the adrenaline for the first hour or two of playtime, by the time you've been doing this for eight hours and still are only halfway through the game, it gets tedious, frustrating and boring. In addition throughout the game, and especially annoying during the "stealth missions," the enemies have increadibly good eyesight.Basically this means that if you can see them in any way, shape or form... they can see you, which will set off the alarm. In "non-stealth" levels, once the alarm's been activated in a level, it never goes off.In "stealth missions" if the alarm goes on, you lose the level. Additionally, one of the largest downfalls of the game is the linear design of the levels.Forget the beautiful, open-ended levels Deus Ex gave us (basically, here are your weapons, here are your skills, you figure out how to pass the level). In Soldier of Fortune II, your objective ALWAYS lies at the end of a long stretch of a large, linear landscape where all the doors (save one or two) are mysteriously and conveniently locked. If you play through the game a second time, it'll be just like the first since any potentially alternate route to reach the object is also conveniently blocked off, closed or otherwise inaccessible.Furthermore, the goals of many of the levels require similar guess work as the "pixel hunting" in old puzzle games did.For example, your objective might be to "enter the chemical building" or something to that effect. To get into the building you have to find the ONE correct door out of the 40 doors that line the street. This becomes frustrating after about ten minutes of no success.Speaking of chemicals, the plot of Soldier of Fortune II centers around thwarting the potential spread of a deadly virus... too bad that's been done too much already. Finally, the biggest problem I had with the game was the way you actually fired. It sounds obvious, but in a first-person shooter, emphasis should be placed on making the activity of simply shooting the gun relatively easy.Aiming shouldn't be a pain in the ...It may have been my set-up (although I checked my configuration many times to make sure it wasn?t my settings), but when I would move the mouse just the tiniest bit left or right, the crosshairs would jump 5 to 7 pixels in that given direction. That may not seem like much until you realize that unless the enemy is within arms reach, you're likely to actually "jump" over the enemy's head (or entire body depending on their distance from you).Add this to the fact that unless you shoot an enemy in the head or take off one of their limbs, it generally takes around five hits to take an enemy down (shoot them once in the thigh with a pistol and they often just "shake it off" like a bad Steven Seagal movie). This can be annoying since it means you?ll probably reload your save games a lot.I consider myself pretty good at first-person shooters, but this one had me reloading every couple minutes.Very frustrating. So although there's a lot of eye candy (i.e. "gore") and the audio's pretty good, make sure you play Soldier of Fortune II before you buy it.Just because it looks cool doesn't mean it won't end up being very frustrating.

Normally, I shy away from any flightsim or trainsim add-on with the word "Abacus" in front of it. In my experience, Abacus Publishing has had a nasty habit of selling very mediocre products at full pop. However, I must admit that Flight Deck 3 is actually a very decent package. I was most impressed by the carrier and I can't say I've seen a prettier one for FS2002 anywhere - payware or freeware. The textures are done very nicely (screenshots on Abacus' website don't do it justice) and it also sports moving radar dishes and a modeled lower deck. The elevators don't work, however, and a flag fluttering in the breeze would have been nice. The deck does have some static vehicles and crewmen, but no static aircraft. Night-lighting is also done nicely, though a more knowledgeable bloke informed me that it is not completely accurate and the carrier is conspicuously missing a meatball. While the carrier does have a wake painted in the water, the ship doesn't actually move - an unfortunate limitation of FS2002. Aside from the gorgeous carrier, the program does come with 5 aircraft: an F18, F14, Harrier, E2C Hawkeye, and a CH46 helicopter. While all of the virtual cockpits are acceptable, I found the exterior modeling and flight physics to be very average compared to other payware planes. I have a FREEWARE F18, F14, and several helicopters that literally put these planes to shame. The F18, in particular, has landing gear that is always in the taxiing "collapsed" position, even when the plane is on approach. The Harrier is probably the best aircraft in the package and, though it doesn't look quite as good as Alphasim's, does have a more realistically difficult flight model. Either way, I would have been perfectly happy with the carrier by itself. The biggest reason for carrier ops fans to buy this package, however, has to do with the ArrCab program that comes with it. Once freeware, but now solely licensed to Abacus, this program operates within FS2002 to deliver the carrier launches and cable arrested landings that the sim normally lacks. And considering the limitations of FS2002, I thought these effects were very well done. The Abacus package gives you the same carrier (U.S.S. George Washington) in 4 different locations around the globe but, if this isn't enough, the ArrCab utility allows the user to specify their own location for these effects. (namely any freeware add-on carriers) If Abacus had really wanted to make this an outstanding product, they could have tried to implement some flights with real, recorded carrier ATC. (and hooked up with some better aircraft) Of course, as long as I'm dreaming, I'd also like some static aircraft on the deck, dynamic aircraft in the pattern, working elevators, waving flags, and a pony. The lack of any aural interaction with the tower does hurt the realism factor, but with the prettiest carrier out there and the ArrCab utility, I don't think there's currently anything else on the market to equal Flight Deck 3. ... Zeus: MW4:M has more assault mechs than any other MW game.12 of them.Add this and it's 14.This mech is ok.80 tons, 70 mph, LAMS.It carries a Lg Laser, 2 LRM 15, and HEAVY GAUSS RIFLE, my new favorite weapon.I replace weapons with that of clan, throw on more heat sinks and there you go.If you really want to use the HGR, take the Fafnir, it's got 2. 4/5 Hunchback: Goes pretty fast for 50 tons. The weapons are kind of stupid.2 med lasers, SRM 6, but the LBX AC 20 is nice. Not my favorite.2/5 Dragon: NO ARMOR AT ALL!85 mph, no jump jets, but I can live with that. The mech looks decently cool, but the weapons are very lame.Med laser, LRM 10, AC 5, HGR (only good one) 3/5 Highlander: The Zeus is better, but these weapons are ok.You better know how to aim if you want to win with the HGR, GR, Lg Lasers.4/5 The clan pack is better, brother, get that first.

I will say that the graphics in this game are wondrous. From the Arabian Nights courtyard to the Pink Floyd-esque "Membrane" (which seemingly represents the heroine's brain...or maybe Jung's collective unconcious...or maybe God as visualized by dolphins) the rendering is absolutely gorgeous. But graphics alone do not make a good game. There is no logic to BA2...neither externally nor internally. The "plot" has you discovering an artifact that can imbue you with a superhuman wisdom by transporting you to a series of different realms and times and letting you experience those places through the eyes of one of its inhabitants. This scheme fails on a variety of levels.Sometimes, you appear in these realms as yourself, while in others, you are a completely unrecognizable character. There is no logic to WHY these worlds are chosen, nor to what you are supposed to "learn" in each.In fact, given that you are supposedly striving to achieve some sort of enlightenment that you can then pass on to the rest of humanity, it seems odd that the focus of the "Scheherazade" world is to lie, steal and seduce women.Eventually the sequence of realms seemscompletely arbitrary. It is similar to Ray Bradbury's "The Illustrated Man:" a series of unconnected short stories woven together by a loose and incomprehensible over-story.Except Bradbury wrote GOOD short stories. The chapters of BA2 are weak and silly, each and every one.Even the few good puzzles (and there are a couple) are mired down in a morass of confusion and pretentiousness. Beyond Atlantis was a quality game...one that made you think, feel, and examine your character's motives.(Plus, the "White Horse" cutscene in BA may be the single best cutscene in any adventure game ever.)It is an injustice to THAT game that this one shares the same title.Avoid this game at all costs unless you are desperate for some eye candy.

I'd also like to point out that even though you don't need the original Disciples II to play the expansion pack, the game only includes the Undead and Legions side of the original. So, if you want to replay ALL the original game (which I did), you either have to have that original game lying around, or you have to buy this expansion pack PLUS the "Guardians of the Light" expansion pack (which I've done). Because of the shortness of this exansion pack, Strategy First would be wise to not sell it, "Guardians of the Light," and "Rise of the Elves" separately. They should put all of them together and sell the combination as the expansion pack. However, if you played the original game and liked it, I still recommend this game. It's short, but good. ...
