Amazon.com Review It's amazing that such a small machine (it's about the size of your mouse pad) can deliver such incredible performance. Chalk it up to superior engineering. Dreamcast's only downside is that it comes with only one controller and a demo disc. In order to truly take advantage of Dreamcast's capabilities, we recommend outfitting the controller with a Jump Pack and a Visual Memory Unit. Getting one or more extra controllers is also a good idea, because some of the best Dreamcast games support up to four players at once. Why it's so cool: Reviews (930)

Amazon.com Product Description Other ways for developers to utilize the larger memory is by setting a higher frame rate, longer replays, and more animations. Games also can have more sophisticated artificial intelligence, which allows computer-controlled characters to be smarter, literally. Games can offer more characters and vehicles, and contain larger, more complex levels and worlds. Some games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask require the Expansion Pak, while others such as Perfect Dark require it for access to all of the game's levels and features. See our list of Nintendo 64 games that take advantage of the Expansion Pak's extra power. Reviews (89)

Editorial Review Nintendo 64's popularity among younger gamers is no surprise. Well-respected games featuring such long-lived and much-loved personalities as Mario (of arcade classic Donkey Kong fame), Zelda, and Banjo-Kazooie are easy to learn and offer enormous replay value. But times are a' changin' and the system's ever-growing library of titles has expanded into every genre of games imaginable, including games better suited for older gamers. In fact, some of the most acclaimed--in some cases, groundbreaking--games available on any platform today are packed onto N64's old-school cartridges. Under the system's hood, its appeal to the young certainly didn't produce a less mature gaming machine. On the contrary, the 64-bit system boasts impressive graphics, stereo sound, and numerous accessory enhancements, including a high-resolution pack that boosts graphics to awe-inspiring resolutions. Start your library with Goldeneye 007, Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Star Wars: Episode One Racer--these titles represent a decent start to any N64 cartridge library. With the recent launch of Sega's Dreamcast system, Nintendo 64 is being left behind as the leader in video game technology. And with newer game systems featuring CD-based games, the system's expensive cartridge format is proving itself an archaic and unconventional storage format. But, at a sub-$110 recommended retail price for a console with two controllers, innovative accessory enhancements and a great library of games keep the system's rabid fan base satisfied, if not eager for Nintendo's next evolutionary step. --Eric Twelker Reviews (123)

By purchasing a ram card which doubles as a Japanese game converter, you can play classic arcade fighters WITH ZERO SLOW DOWN!!!! I've played a few of the 2-D fighters on sega Dreamcast and I've noticed a little slow down. That's why I still keep my saturn to play old 2-D fighters. You can purchase a Japanese ram card for a very cheap price on auction websites. There are many other great games which do not require a ram card. Like Virtual Cop parts 1 and 2 where you can shoot bad guys and hear them scream in agony. There is also an excellent 3-D fighting game named Fighters Megamix. Fighters Megamix takes characters from two separate games, and places them all into one game. With over 25 characters to use, this game is actually better than the Playstation 2 Virtual Fighter 4. Virtual Fighter 4 has only 16 characters.
The saturn was a well-built machine. Despite its internal workings being less than perfect in some ways (it was designed to work with squares rather than triangles when rendering, and had multiple processors sharing the main load) it also had some surprisingly good ideas (like built in memory for game saves and an expansion slot for memory upgrades and save backups). But what really impressed me about the hardware is the fact that even though the machine has been extinct for years, every one that I've encountered works perfectly. Now I'm sure that some of them just plain gave out, or were dropped or something. But I have never had a Saturn not load a game. I have never seen a Saturn freeze up or crash. I have never seen one stutter while playing movies. And my playstation started doing those things years ago (I finally had to get rid of it and pay for a replacement). Also worthy of mention is the fact that the original saturn controller is what I consider to be the finest designed controller in all of video game history. I fits my hand PERFECTLY. Playing games like Panzer Dragoon II, or Rayman with this controller is simply amazing. And speaking of Panzer Dragoon II... The Saturn had what I consider to be the greatest selection of games ever. The best version of Rayman (my favorite side-scrolling game ever) is on the Saturn. Radiant Silvergun (what many consider to be the best shooter ever) is for Import Saturn. Nights into Dreams (the greatest game Sonic Team ever made) is for Saturn. And what about Sega Rally (quite possibly the greatest rally racing game ever)? Truly, when you take the imports into consideration, the Saturn had an outstanding selection of games. Whatever you want, you can get. Want fighting games? Strategy games? Side-scrollers? Arcade racing? RPGs? The Saturn delivers. Big Time. The Sega Saturn is truly a system for the hardcore. And many games for it can be had for as little as three or four dollars. And with the system itself running about $30.00 or thereabouts for one in good shape, everyone should have one. Now if only the Price of the import games would drop a little on ebay... ... Editorial Review The screen is 10 percent bigger than Game Boy's, but the overall machine has roughly the same convenient pocket-sized dimensions and light weight as the Game Boy. The NEOGEO Pocket Color provides up to 40 hours of continuous fun on just two AA batteries. The 16-bit graphics are crystal clear--making it easy to tell the difference between humans and animals, friends and foes, and walls and doors--and easily viewed in both bright and dim lighting. The color palette has three times the range of its competitor's, with 146 possible shades. There is also a built-in calendar, daily horoscope, alarm clock, and global clock that can be accessed even without a game cartridge in the slot. Two players can go head-to-head with a simple cable connection (sold separately). NEOGEO is available in six different casing colors: silver, clear, blue, ocean blue, stone blue, and anthracite. The only drawback is that NEOGEO is new and, therefore, playing catch-up to Nintendo's well-stocked list of titles, which boasts A-list offerings such as Super Mario Brothers, Pokémon Pinball, and Tetris. But SNK scores points for the few titles that it does offer for the system. Among the better titles for NEOGEO are Dragons Wild video poker, arcade classicsBust-A-Move and Pac-Man, and your basic serve-and-volley Pocket Tennis. Most of these games are pretty addictive and perfectly suited to the well-designed, thumb-friendly, eight-position joystick. --Carrie Bell Pros: Reviews (9)
