Editorial Review

What's more fun than a barrel of opposable-thumbed simians? How about the silly--butchallenging--Ape Escape? While not the first game to offer enhanced control with Sony'sdual-stick analog controller, Ape Escape is the first game to require either an analog or dual shock controller to play. That requirementensures that players will have full control of their hero, Spike. One stick moves Spike in any direction, while the other swings his monkey-catching devices.

In Ape Escape, a circus monkey named Specter stumbles upon a scientist's prototypeintelligence-enhancing helmet, turning him into an evil monkey genius. As Spike, the professor's youngfriend, you must travel through time to clean up all of the monkeys Specter has sent back in his attempt torepopulate the world. If that's not enough to make you laugh, then chasing his goofy monkey minions asthey scurry from your clutches will certainly tickle your funny bone. You'll discover a variety of gadgets tohelp you in your quest, including monkey radar, a slingshot, and a propeller for flying. Spanning 25 hugelevels, Ape Escape is approachable for novices, and offers added challenges for veteran gamers. One such challenge is to lure a dinosaur near a rocky cliff, and then jar the monkey off his back and intoyour net. Note: no monkeys were harmed in the creation of this game. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Unique control scheme brings new challenge to the PlayStation
  • Massive game has plenty of replay value
Cons:
  • Unique control scheme requires some ramp-up time

4-0 out of 5 stars WORST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED!!!!!!
This game is definitely the worst game I have ever played, and believe me, I've played hundreds!! This game is soooooo boring and I don't understand it at all!!!! The graphics are blocky and the music is sooo annoying!! I set this game aside as soon as I played it for five minutes!!!! This game is NOT worth the money! If you want a good game, I'd recomend "Final Fantasy X" expecially, or "Harvest Moon."

5-0 out of 5 stars Too much fun
I was bored one day, and was watching my mother-in-law play Ape Escape 2.Looked like it was fun, and less stressful than some of my other games that I like tend to be, and borrowed her copy of the first Ape Escape.

It starts out simple enough. You catch a few slow monkeys and learn your gadgets thru tutorials. But then it gets difficult. My 3 year old daughter loves to sit on the bed with spare control in hand and help catch monkeys. The graphics are nice and the storyline is fun.The gadgets are cool too.

Only one complaint, and that is that the camera angle loves to change when you are at the most challenging parts.Anytime you need to use your flying thingy and it's for going somewhere difficult, the camera changes and you can't see where your destination is.It gets a bit annoying after you die a few times, but I did eventually get past the frustration and finished the game. This game is great for young kids and adults alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars MONKEYS !!!!!!!!
What can be more fun than running around chasing monkeys? the are plenty of levels and gadgets to play with. The only downside is that the paddle boat is impossible to control in my opinion. Each monkey has its own charateristics and weapons. just trying to run up and snag the monkey doesn't always work. special gadgets must be used first. Pretty much run around the world getting rid of monkeys using gadgets. The game is pretty explanatory but is loads of platform fun. also includes minigames that can kill some time with friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just one more ape...
Ape Escape consists of more than 20 3D levels based on a variety of time zones. To clear a level, Spike (played by you) must capture a set number of monkeys. After filling that quota, you must access the next level. Reaching the monkeys will require you to jump, sneak, swim, climb and fly through a variety of situations. To help you on your way, you are given a net and a lightsaber type stun club.Throughout the course of the game, Spike will collect six additional gadgets. In addition to providing the means of completing future levels, returning to previous levels with new gadgets will allow Spike to capture any monkeys he left behind. In addition to monkeys, each level has tokens to collect. Collecting enough tokens will open minigames. This game gets addicting pretty fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Cute!
I bought this for my four-year old and he liked it.I guess the idea of catching monkeys really appealed to him.I tried it and I liked it.The game is fun and challenging.Only, it is a bit fast paced when catching the little fur-balls.Fun for all!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The WipeOut Review
For those of you who don't know WipeOut was one of the first PlayStation 1 games that came out for the console.Hands down one of the best anti-gravity racing games, next to JetMoto, I have ever played. The music will get you pumped and ready to kick some racing but.The design of the tracks are very imaginative. And the racing crafts are equally beautiful. However my only problem with the game is the controls, whileoverall they are good it gets a little hard to control the craft in the real tight courses. But overall this is a good game and will definetly leave you with good memories. If you like anti-gravity racing games another game I highly suggest, that I mentioned earlier, is "JetMoto."

5-0 out of 5 stars The reason why I bought a Playstation
I remember way back when the Playstation first came out, a friend of mine only had a demo of this game because the actual game wasn't going to come out for a few months. The demo featured one ship on the first track for one lap, and you had to wait for it to load every time. I must have played it a million times. I actually got to the point where I could get in third place on the first lap.

Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I have probably played more racing games in my life than any other kind of game. I have played pretty much every kind of racing game in existance, from Gran turismo and Rage racer on Playstation to Hydro Thunder and Star Wars Episode 1:Pod Racer on Dreamcast, fron Diddy Kong on N64 to F-Zero and Mario Kart on Super Nintendo. And I am here to tell you that this one of the best racing games ever made, not just on Playstation, but on any system.

First, there is the graphics. Yes, they have draw-in, yes, they are low-res compared to most games today. But you know what, these graphics are better than those found in most games made today. How can that be? Simply because the graphics have what is missing from so many other games, STYLE. And let's not forget that each track in the game looks VASTLY different in Raptor League from how it looks in Venom League (playing at a different time of day means completely different lighting, and the lighting looks amazing). Despite it's age, this is a BEAUTIFUL game. From the Martian Red Sky to the Far-North Crystal Course, this game is wonderful to watch.

Then, there is the control. Some have complained about the control, saying it feels too "floaty". But you know what? It's a hovercraft. It's supposed to feel that way. Once you get the hang of it, you grow to love it. It took me a long, long, time to be able to play this game in first-person mode. Every time you hit the wall, the camera goes sideways, disorienting you. But once you get used to controlling the hovercraft in first-person mode, you feel like you've attained a new level of racing skill, and the game becomes that much more fun.

Sound in this game is awesome. Your craft has a cool engine sound, and the voice telling you you've about to get hit by a missile is classic. But what really blows my mind is the soundtrack. It is my favorite game soundtrack of all time. I copied the whole thing off of the game and burned it onto a cd, because it's so great. And when I first ripped it off the cd onto my hard drive, people were downloading the tracks like crazy. Imagine that.

The thing which seperates a great game from a good one is replay value. This game has replay value like you wouldn't believe. I've owned it for years. Yet, every once in a while I simply must go for a spin down one of the tracks. The music, the graphics, the controls...Pefect. This game is a work of art. The best thing to every come from Psygnosis, and in my opinion, the best game in the series. If you love racing games, you'll buy this one and guard it with you life.

2-0 out of 5 stars wipeout WHY?
AS with most playstation games its a clone like so manny
times before this time they stole the briliant koncept from the
mighty F-ZERO games that really kicked ass THE good things
about F-ZERO was the EXELENT CONTROL OF THE GAME the SPEED
and the possibility of destroying your rival plus all those
lovely cars JUMPS TUNNELS and fast gameplay.
WHY even bother playing Wipeout then the REAL thing is out there!!!!.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wipeout
I agree with the other people, this game is fun. But......for some reason i can't save it. if i do, it erases all my other saved data on my memory card. i suggest you rent it first, then buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Gravity Racing at its finest
Absolutely amazing rush. This was the game that caused me to buy my playstation 3 years ago. Today it is still one of my top 3 favorites. The combination of screaming graphics, excellent soundtrack, and the technofuturistic style of the whole thing work perfectly together to give theplayer an incredibly sense of speed and realistic competition. This is avery difficult game to master. It took me many many hours to make itthrough all the tracks. It can be a bit frustrating until you get the hangof the subtle movements required to successfully control the craft. If youlike intense speed and a real sense of competition, you cant go wrong withthis one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you're ready for an exciting jungle adventure, grab your loincloth and getswinging. This arcade action game contains 14 challenging levels to conquer, as well asmovie clips taken directly from the popular animated Disney film Tarzan. Of course, this gamealso contains the obligatory Tarzan yell.

While running and swinging from vines and branches, Tarzan tries to collect itemsscattered throughout the game. The "king of the jungle" can sport several special movesto complete his quest, including a unique ground pound that allows Tarzan to breakthrough objects to reveal secret areas. Strength-building bananas can be consumed forextra power, and Tarzan can also throw spears and knives to defeat his enemies.

While Tarzan's loincloth is ever so lovely, you can also don a dress in this game... to playas Jane, of course. This game certainly scores points for variety. In addition to Tarzan andJane, there's the friendly ape Terk, and a few other familiar characters--all of which havetheir own special moves.

Game settings for easy, medium, and hard accommodate players' varying skill levels. However, while Tarzan is geared for younger children, the special attack and theground pound moves may be too difficult for them. --Kasty Thomas

Pros:

  • Great graphics, including full motion movie clips
  • Based on the hit movie Tarzan
Cons:
  • Game may be too difficult for some younger children
  • Some of the animals killed are cute and furry

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely wonderful
I can't think of any other WWF game I like more than WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game for the Playstation.Yeah, you only have 8 wrestlers, and yes, you don't have very many options, but this game is so incredibly fast and exciting I can easily look past the few flaws.

Vince McMahon and Jerry "the king" Lawler call the matches, and sometimes they are really funny.Sometimes the game messes up and they repeat the same line two or three times in a row. They gave Vince more things to say than Jerry, but you will hear both of them plenty of times while a match is going on.

The loading time isn't that bad.You have to deal with a lot of loading times, but they aren't very long. They are much shorter than the loading times in future WWF Playstation games.

But damn is it ever fun fighting your opponents in this game. You can deliver combos (which are fun and easy to pull off) and a ton of cool moves. The thing that makes this game so special is that the game company made all the regular moves in this game look EXTREMELY devastating.A simple piledriver looks like the guys head is gonna fly off!An uppercut can send someone WAY up high! The game moves so fast and has so many cool moves to keep you interested I can't help but love the heck out of this game.A must buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars 8 wrestlers, voice overs, and fast paced arcade action
The first wrestling game to grace the Playstation, and it offers arcade-fighting action in and out of the ring. Arcade meaning that you press forward, forward punch to perform a move. There are only eight true to life superstars, Bret Hart, the Undertaker, HBK, Razor Ramon, Doink the Clown, Bam Bam Bigelow, Yokozuna, Lex Luger and one hidden superstar, so you may get bored with frequent matches. There are some incredible animations though, but it does get goofy though, with hit combinations, Lex Lugers arm turning into a mace, Bam Bam Bigelow is capable to light his opponents on fire with a diving head butt and other such odd things. Playstation makes great use of the sound qualities and the game has crystal clear sound and voiceovers from Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler doing commentary. The commentary might get repetitive to most people so the game even has the crowd scream things, boo and chant during the match. There is a Road to Wrestlemania mode for single players, which pits you in singles, two on one and three on one-handicap matches. It can get frustrating and tedious to go through those matches. The two player mode only has a huge battle royal mode in which a tag team together tries to defeat 12 wrestlers which come in one after another. While playing the two player mode can get annoying, because once you beat someone you must wait for the game to load as a new superstar runs out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same as Supernintendo?
It was even worse then the Supernintendo one becuase atleast the supernintendo one loaded up quicker! It was the same exact thing and I was not impressed at all.Playstation games are suposed to have grpahics and if it is grpahics you want dont go with this game!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wrestlemania is Awesome
This game is SO cool. It's unrealistic but that's what makes it so cool! With eight of the WWF's finest superstars, this is a must buy for only .... Whether you want to send screaming souls at your opponents with theUndertaker, toss your opponent like a rag doll with Yokozuna, or lock youropponent in the sharpshooter with Bret Hart, this game is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arcade style with old school WWF Superstars!
This game brings all of the old school acrade fun of the WWF to your Playstation. This is very unrealistic but that makes it fun. Play as HBK, Razor Ramon, Yokozuna, Undertaker, Bret Hart, and more. This is old schoolto the bone and cartoony enough for anyone! ... Read more
