Editorial Review

Twisted Metal 2 is a game fueled by pure testosterone. Thebasic idea is to use your car and its onboard weapons to destroy all of the othercars in the race, cruising around such backdrops as Los Angeles, Paris, andAntarctica. Think of Spy Hunter meets demolition derby. You can raceor choose to fight in tournament mode, where you don't advance until everyoneelse is destroyed. There are many cars and drivers to choose from, includingsome favorites like Mr. Grimm, Warthog, and malevolent ice cream clownSweet Tooth from Twisted Metal 1. All have an outrageous arsenal ofweapons. This is a must-play for anyone who has experienced road rage andwants to get even--virtually. --Allen Stewart

Pros:

  • Wild cars, such as an ice cream truck, motorcycle, bulldozer, Indy car--even atank
  • Diverse weapons such as missiles, napalm, and ricochet bombs
  • 2-player game adds the joy of trash-talking
Cons:
  • No real storyline beyond driving around and blowing things up
  • Complex controls

5-0 out of 5 stars The best PS1 ever
This game is the first game I have ever played. It got me into video games into the first place. I don't care what people say but the graphics in this game rule! Next to Black, they are the best! TM3 and 4 had nice graphics but they were all dirty. The only flaw in TM2's graphics are simplicity and pop-up but give the game a break, it is 9 years old and it still doesn't look that bad! Plus, the game is really interactive with tons of landmarks. Also, there is a huge complex storyline only uncovered by beating TM1, 2 and Black.
Pros:
So fun!
Two player never gets old!
14 cars and 11 levels
inexpensive
complex story
huge levels
destruction!
Cons:
Outdated but still stands up to most PS1 games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best PS one ever!
This game really lived up to the sequal, with more modes, weapons, combos and so much more. It has very interesting battle grounds spreading all over the world, from L.A. to antarticia. A new boss is also here.

graphics-very nice looking. the cars have detail and aremore interesting. there are F1 cars and junk cars. it moves fast, and the levels are detailed and large. You can drive in subways, windmills, the Eilfel tower which can be blown up, a museum, office buildings, and even a swimming pool.

sound-the music is very cool,. it fits the place. people scream, and there are realistic sound effects like machine gun firing and missles. There is no sounds when choosing your carlike the first one though.

gameplay-fun, crazy, and phsyco. More weapons, and more. it has other stuff like a deathmatch, and more interesting specials, like a shockwave and a claw that slams your opponents. It's like the first one, but with more options.

replay-great game that will keep you playing. The multiplayer mode will keep you and your friends busy at parties and sleepovers

Overall, this game is worth getting the Playstation alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool stuff for all
Twisted Metal 2 is one of the best Twisted Metal games, I still like Black better. I liked the movie where Axel goes back to his father and rips his arms out of his machine. I hate the T rating. Buy this game NOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!
this is by far the best game ever made. although the graphics are a little slopy, the colours are bright and rich, the physics are perfect, and the wepons are creative.

also, no matter what you taste in cars is, there is a car that you will like. the variety is huge!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Game I Can Win Easy!?!?!?

Parasite Eve tells the story of Aya Brea of the NYPD on a case involving massspontaneous human combustion, mutating animals, and the mitochondria revolution. Sound fun?Confusing? Parasite Eve is both.

It begins when Aya is attending an opera at Carnegie Hall. The soloist bursts into song and theaudience bursts into flames. Somehow, Aya is the only attendee who isn't affected. Notsurprisingly, she wants to know what's going on. This curiosity, coupled with her duties as a policeofficer, grows into a full-scale investigation.

Parasite Eve's mechanics are simple, yet elegant. From combat to level advancement, thegame runs easily and smoothly, making it ideal for someone new to role-playing games (RPGs).Experienced RPGers should still enjoy it for its brilliant storyline.

Technically speaking, the game's graphics and sound are good, but not spectacular. The full-motioncutscenes are superbly done. Parasite Eve is a good game--there's just not enough of it.While it doesn't feel crammed together, the story seems to resolve quickly. Brilliant while it lasted,Parasite Eve left me wanting more. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • Mutating dogs
  • Involving storyline
  • Elegant game mechanics
Cons:
  • Too short, and it's confusing

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLY ORIGINAL
I have always wanted to play parasite eve because i have heard great things. When i first went through the first day, i couldn't believe it. Not only was i moved and stunned when i completed the game but i was certain that parasite eve was a gold mine. A story like no other, parasite eve is a natural in the field of originaliy and not to mention the story that goes along. An RPG Shooter will always be a great combination that squaresoft has created and i hope that there will be plenty more where that came from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parasite Eve Rocks My World!!!
Parasite Eve is the ultimate videogame ever created. When I was younger,my dad had it and I loved it!Unfortunately,it broke 4 years ago. After going through many different plazas and videogame stores,I finally found the last copy of the game on a website(by the way,it's not eBay). This game is the 6 day story of Aya Brea,a rookie cop,age 25.(Yes,I do remember,it was the greatest game of all time.)Also, there is a Parasite Eve movie. It takes place like 2 years or more before Aya is born, and it tells about Aya's mother, who had similiar Mitochondria Cells to Eve.I am a fiend, even though people do not know how I truly loved Parasite Eve.Now you probably think I'm crazy.Oh,and if you love Parasite Eve,you'll love Tekken 1-4.Tekken 5 is comin out next week, and you'll also love Death By Degrees and Resident Evil 4.Well,thanks for reading!Bye!

5-0 out of 5 stars An RPG with very nice touches by Square!
I guess this game is sorta like Survival Horror meets RPG.The story is great, and the graphics and sound are way up there for the times!Sometimes I found the play control a bit stickey when searching areas for items, but the combat is a big improvement over the Final Fantasy turn-based system.I highly recommend this game for Resident Evil and RPG fans alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking And Nothing Short of Spectacular!
Although PS1 seems to be something of the past now, it's always good to return to it to relive classic games, especially classics that are not on PS2. Parasite Eve is one of those rare finds where no matter how old it is or how many times you play it, it's as good as it was the first time.
Based on a popular Japanese novel (under the same name), Parasite Eve stars a young female cop named Aya Brea, whom, after witnessing a chaotic senario at an opera, realizes the existance of "Eve" who plans on "freeing the mitochondria's true powers." Aya soon gets entangled in the horrific adventure as she defends New York City from the approaching apocalypse.

The absolute best thing about PE is it's so intriging and thought-provoking. It makes you think, but not to the point where you're wracking your brain out, eather. The concept of the Mitochondrias may sound bizarre but in all respect gets your creative juices flowing in a plot that PE makes seem all too real. For a fictional storyline, I haven't seen such a realistic-fictional plot like this in a long time!

Pace is steady and smooth. Some parts will be more action-packed than others, but everything's balanced off very well. Music is brilliant and I find myself watching the opening all the time. Visuals are breath-taking, considering it's age. The field/battle graphics aren't worth a full five stars (maybe 4) but the cinematic scenes are, and it doesn't take you long to forget this is a game. You'll begin to think it's an actual movie. It's not unbearably long, either, so things are tight, cut to the chase, and leave you satisfied, yet wanting more. The characters too, are well-developed as far as depth.

Overall, Parasite Eve is one of those rare classics that are worth going back to. You definately don't get the privlege of playing a game like this every day. If you're a fan of Sci-Fi, horror, or action-genres, PE's for you. Truely amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars great sequl even if u have not played the first
i have not played thefirst pe i bet its a great game and this one is too the gameplay is awsome the storyline can be confusing but its still good the sound is good if u have played re games this is not spooky at all lolall of this can rival a ps2 xbox or gamecube game thats what i think its awsome its a must buy go get it ... A downright creepy "survival horror" title, Silent Hillsucceeds where most Resident Evil-inspired titles suck: keepingyou hooked and instilling you with fear throughout the game. Playersare cast as Harry Mason in his desperate search for his daughter, whomysteriously disappeared after their car crashed into a gully outsideof a desolate resort town.

The 3-D environments in Silent Hill are bathed in fog ordarkness, making its dismal setting all the more eerie; this alsoallows for some spectacular lighting effects when using a flashlight inthe dark. Granted, there are some pretty coarse graphics being obscuredhere, but it's a fair trade-off, considering the game's short loadtimes.

Silent Hill is played from a third-person perspective, viewedfrom both fixed and moving camera angles. As with similar games, theviewpoint can be awkward at times, especially during combat, which hereis so clunky that you should try to avoid it whenever possible--somethingyou should do anyway, as this isn't Tomb Raider.

Rather than resort to cheap scare tactics, Silent Hill featuresa gameplay twist that works very well with its limited visibilityenvironments. Harry carries a radio with him that crackles with staticwhenever the game's nasties are near, and continues until they're nolonger in the vicinity or have been killed off. (Enemies may requirefurther whacking when they're down, as they like to play dead.)Additionally, the supported Dual-Shock controller pulsates in aheartbeatlike fashion whenever you're moderately or seriously injured.--Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Suspenseful story with bone-chilling gameplay
  • Short load times
  • Excellent lighting and fog effects
  • Five possible endings add replay value
Cons:
  • Coarse graphics
  • Clunky combat

5-0 out of 5 stars Wat Better Than Resident Evil 2
If you like scary fun, shooting things and kicking thing on the floor, then you'll love this game! Silent Hill is a great addition for any survival horror fan's collection. Or just anybodies collection. While its almost as good as Resident Evil 4, people who still have a Ps2 or a working PSX, you should pick this up.The graphics might not be as good as Resident Evil,
it's still a must buy. It's the scariest game you will ever play
along with better camera angles, running and shooting, bloodier and scarier enemy design than any other survival horror game. If you play this with every light off in your house and your alone, keep a gun. Trust me, you will get scared. And you can use a chainsaw! How cool is that? You dont be a fan of survival horror games to enjoy Silent Hill. Infact, you dont even need to like video games to love or get scared by SilenT Hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning to the best horror series of all time
Rating: A
Perhaps it was with Resident Evil that horror games began to rear their ugly head (pun intended), but it was here that psychological tension and true horror was established on the Playstation, as few can argue the tension and suspense this game, and all of the games in the series exhibit in terms of just staying with you long after you've put down the controller, and have crawled into bed for what you might have hoped to be a nice night of sleep. Although part two trounces this game in nearly every category, this game still stands the test of time, as one of the defining games on Playstation 1, as where RE reinvented horror, Silent Hill turned it on its head, and bludgeoned it with a rusty screwdriver, making you wonder where in the hell the creators for this game got their ideas in the first place. Basically the story in a nutshell revolves around Harry Mason, as he drives by the town of Silent Hill late one night, with his daughter Cheryl. Upon seeing a motorcycle cop pass him, it is only moments later, where he once again sees her bike again; but turned over on the side of the road. Upon looking back up a girl is standing in the middle of the road, Harry swerves to avoid hitting her, and the next time he awakens, he finds Cheryl gone, his jeep destroyed, and he is in a town encircled with mist and filled with dead ends that lead to nowhere in particular. Picking up mellee objects and guns along the way, Harry fights through hordes of demons (or are they really demons?) to find his daughter, and try to save her from the hellish town of Silent Hill. From a church to a school, and all the way to a hospital, and a mall, few places are left unturned in Harrys search for his missing daughter, as the mangled pieces of ths puzzle fall into place, the storyline becomes more and more disjointed until the bizarre final battle in Nowhere. A note to those that might play through the game, and be caught off guard by the seemingly strange storyline, that never seems to come together completely, play Silent Hill 3 to get the true conclusion of this games storyline, or simply head on over to GameFaqs.com and check out any of the storyline weavers over there, they are written impeccably well, and help to bridge the gap where you might be left wondering exactly what the hell is going on. Although the games battle system is a bit awkward, Silent Hill is more about atmosphere and storyline, which it exhibits in spades all throughout the whole series (once again part 2 being the pinnacle). If you enjoy this game, check out Jacob's Ladder, an excellent and disturbing movie, that hugely inspired this game and the series in general, this will also help you get a feel for the whole disjointed reality, nightmare scenarios present thorughout the whole series. All I can say to conclude this article is wait til these guys make a game on the upcoming generation of systems, as truly these crators are geniuses, that have mastered the craft of game making to an art form, and their works give you the same kind of horror and awe as looking at Francis Bacon painting, as we wonder just what the hell is beyond the abyss, awaiting us in the inner sanctums of our own dilapidated imagination, and dreams. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE scariest video game ever created!!!!
Back in 2002, I had never really played any kind of survival horror game ever in my life.A friend of mine came over to my house and brought Silent Hill and the Playstation.I was just watching and I really liked how it had snow falling out in the town in the summer nonetheless, it looked like a really scary game. Then, months later, I borrowed this game from my friend and played from the beginning and didn't get really far because I really didn't know what to do.Finally, one night, when my friend was back over at my house, I was playing and he was sitting there watching and we were playing with surround sound, the lights off and no one else was in the house. From the very beginning alley, I was very scared! So I get to the school, Midwich Elementary School, and everything looks normal. My friend who was watching kept telling me that once I go through the Clock Tower, I will be back at Midwich Elementary and that it will be the same school but at the same time, it wouldn't be the same school and at that point, I was really starting to freak out.I had no idea what horrors were waiting for me!

I go through the Clock Tower and I hear these really creepy sirens, I'm to the point where I want to turn the game off but my friend was with me and kept telling me to move on.So I start to go into the school and once I'm in, I'm freaking out!All the floors were replaced by metal grates with nothing below them, the walls were like chained fences, everything covered in blood, pure horror and terror!!I was really scared by the visuals and the music.Something really creepy in the Alternate school is when you go into one of the bathroom's on the first floor, you end up on the second floor, creepy!!!Just everything that I saw and heard in every room and corridor scared me to death!!

I turned the game off after I was done in the school and couldn't sleep with the light off!!I did eventually play through the whole game and beat it but I have never been so scared playing a video game in my entire life!!!The really scary music and sound effects play a big part. But what's really scary isn't just the atmosphere, the music or visuals. It freaks me out thinking about why the town of Silent Hill is deserted and how Samael came along. If I think about this stuff before I go to sleep, a lot of times, I can't sleep. The Alternate Hospital, Alchemilla Hospital is another really scary place in the game that really scared me too but not as bad as the school. To be honest, when I first was going through the Alternate school, the way it looked, that's what I thought hell would look like, it was so scary. To this day, it scares me!Sometimes even with the light on, it's scary!!Even though the graphics aren't the best, this Silent Hill game scares me more than Silent Hill's 2, 3 or 4 and they have better graphics!!!I would not recommend this game to anyone who scares easily!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very, VERY disturbing game...
I got "Silent Hill" as a gift, one of several that i enjoyed playing on the old playstation 1.I had played resident evil, parasite eve, etc; and enjoyed them all.But i really hadn't been all that frightened.

Then i started to play Silent Hill.

This game doesn't showcase the fact that it's SCARY or BLOODY.It presents itself as being purely eery- a cold, lonely sort of fear that pervades the game. The snow, the mist, the radio, and (interestingly enough) the somewhat characatured objects.Weapons, items, and environmental stuff all seem slightly out of proportion.

But the biggest shock, for me, was the "otherworld".Seeing what was just an EERY town turn into something like hell was overwhelming. And it's not an ostentatious hell (BLOOD!GUTS!TOOOOORRRRRRTTTTUUUUURRRRE!!!).It was extremely subtle, only small- but very dire, very effective- changes take place. And that's what makes the game so scary. There is no clear cut line between "Silent Hill" and the hellish otherworld, and that makes it so very frightening. To this day i wonder where the blackness beneath the chain-link ground leads...

And that's just the story.Gameplay is surprisingly fun, though rather simple. You will have a blast beating creatures with the manhole opener. You won't be all that stumped by the puzzles, although there is much to explore, and you have to pay great attention to detail to arrive at the best of the multiple endings.Gameplay remains the understatement, however, as this game manages an almost cinematic horror more than a party-worthy funfest. But this is ultimately much more rewarding in the end, especially when you can't fall asleep...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful atmosphere!
Harry Mason and his seven year old daughter Cheryl are on their way to the lakeside resort known as Silent Hill for a peaceful getaway when a mysterious teenage girl appears in the headlights.Harry swerves to avoid her and ends up crashing through a fence into Silent Hill. When he regains consciousness, he finds Cheryl is missing. The town seems to be completely abandoned, save for a few abominations scurrying about, covered in a thick blanket of fog, and it's snowing-in July.He spots Cheryl up ahead through the fog and calls out to her but she runs away from him.She escapes and he is now stranded in the town and is left to search for his missing daughter in a town that is periodically taken over by the otherworld, AKA hell.

If you think the town is creepy at first, just wait.It gets MUCH better.Skinned bodies are hung from steal fence walls.Faceless zombie children sneak up on you in the halls of the Midwich school, knives in hand.Everything is drenched in blood and guts.Screeches, banging on a piano, cockroaches the size of cats scuttling across the floor and nibbling on your toes, the body of a decapitated dog whose head has apparently served as a child's basketball lies on the ground, grunting gorilla/men tackle you and tear out your throat, nurses in the hospital pursue you with knives, the ghost of a little girl runs past, giggling, headless ragdolls are nailed to the walls, something in the room crashes but you turn....and noone's there.

Throughout the game, you'll eventually discover why the town keeps being invaded by the otherworld, who is holding Cheryl captive and why, who the mysterious teenage girl in the road was and why she keeps appearing, and you'll meet a few interesting characters including the eccentric, creepy old woman Dahlia Gillespie, a girl named Alessa who's past is truly horrific, a female police officer named Cybil, a gruff hospital worker named Michael Kauffman, and the sweet, frightened nurse Lisa Garland.

The game terrifies many, but it honestly didn't frighten me in the least, although I LOVED the eery atmosphere, the plot, and the characters.Speaking of which, the plot is one of the deepest, most involved video game plots you'll ever see. After playing the game, you'll probably need to read a plot guide off of gamefaqs.com in order to grasp everything, and even then, it's a bear to take in everything. The writers are geniuses and Dean Koontz and Stephen King would be proud to call the plot their own brainchild.

So how about the other three Silent Hill games?Well, I Silent Hill 2 was a fantastic game that I highly recommend (it doesn't tie in to the first installment's plot).I've played through 98% of Silent Hill 3 (which is a sequel to Silent Hill 1, so try to play 1 before 3) and it's good, but dissapointing compared to the first two.Silent Hill 4, I've only played a tiny amount of as a rental, but the opening movie was quite frightening. ... You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic.

Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offeringtips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart

4-0 out of 5 stars This hasn't aged particularly well, but.....
After eight years without a new Metal Gear game, this franchise got it's third entry with Metal Gear Solid. The graphics have not aged well at all. Textures are very pixellated, animation is very jerky, and the framerate can get rather slow at times. The audio, however, has lots of great dialogue, combined with a catchy musical score.

The gameplay is based around stealth. You are Solid Snake, a spy working for a secret agency whose objective is to stop a device called Metal Gear, and save a couple of old guys. The story is deeper than that, of course, but in a nutshell, that's it. The controls, while laid out well, can be very unresponsive at times. The game itself is very fun (sneaking around to either get past or silently eliminate enemies), but is very easy to complete, and take away all of the cinematics and dialogue (12 hours of it all!), and you've got just three hours of gameplay.

Metal Gear Solid hasn't aged well at all, but is still very fun and happens to be a nice collector's piece for fans of the series. But should you start here? No, grab a GameCube and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (a next-gen remake of this) instead, then grab Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance on the PS2 or the Xbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, possibly the best action game ever created...
Metal gear solid has the most complex and often perplexing storyline I have ever seen in a video game, hands down. It will always have you on your toes, literally. I have seen many movies, and I can honestly say this game has a better storyline than most movies. Here is what you need to know..

Graphics- 100/100 The graphics were top of the line when this game first came out, and even to this day they look great. There is so much detail to every aspect of the game, and even compared to most newer games, this game wins out. Back when I first played it in about early 2000 or so, the graphics were the best the playstation had to offer, and that's a year or so after this game came out, which is pretty astonishing. There is even a scene where Snake is in the girls bathroom, and there is a mirror which perfectly reflects everything. I mean, back when this game came out that was a pretty big feat both graphically and attention wise. Most games just don't pay the kind of attention this game does.

Sound- 100/100 Perfect. Just flawless. There isn't much of an actual soundtrack, but the music is incredibly atmospheric and will make you feel like you are Solid Snake, infiltrating a nuclear base. The voice-overs are the best I have ever seen in a video game. Solid Snakes voice over is perfect, and just about everyone elses fits their personality and there image. Otacon's fits him perfectly, so do Meryl's and Liquid Snake's.
Seriously though, this game has incredible sound and has never been surpassed by any action game to date.

Gameplay- 100/100 I have heard people complain about the poor camera views limiting the gameplay, but in my opinion, the camera views perfectly fit this game and the game wouldn't be the same without them. Sure, it would have been nice to have a first person perspective while using the weapons, but it's all the same to me. I think it is perfectly fine having to shoot enemies in a third person view, and it works better with the type of graphics that it has. When you are spotted, enemies will storm in from all directions to stop you, something that seperates this game from all others. This game gives you good reason to want to play it safe, but still allows you you have some action packed fun as well, if you want to take a chance that is. Also, this game has an incredible storyline but doesn't throw it in your face all the time. MGS2 drags the storyline on eccesively and bores you with excruciatingly long cut scenes and codec conversations. I remember using the square button to skip most of the cut scenes in MGS2. The problem with MG2 is that the storyline is too complex for the good of the game. I mean, much of it is pointless grubble and the game bores you by making you listen to conversations about crap that doesn't apply necessarily to the main storyline, making it a waste of time. This game, however, truly has a wonderful , complex storyline that you will WANT to watch and listen to. Every conversation and cut scene adds to the game flawlessly, so you will probably never get bored, although I am sure you will find yourself reading the codec conversations manually instead of listening to the people talk, since they tend to talk rather slowly and take up a bit too much gameplay.

Overall- 100/100 This game is as perfect as it gets, and I have beaten it at least 15 times, if not more. Even to this day it is a pleasure to play, and I don't think it will get old any time soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Solid
Well this is one game that I love playing and I always will. This game has it all, everything you would expect in a movie. Im talking about true military action which features, VR training, special weapons, and ofcourse the hero and the villains.

You are Solid Snake, and your mission is to find and eliminate the nuclear war head 'Meatl Gear Rex'. But beware, expect challenges through out your mission, be preared for antthing. Only you have been chosen to attempt this mission and you know you can do it. Prepare yourself for stealth action like you have never seen it before, and experience the life of a genetically born soldier.

Spyro is a cute purple dragon in a bit of a pickle. Each of Spyro's dragon friends has fallen victim to the nefarious Gnasty Gnorc, who has turned them into crystals. Accompanied by Sparx the dragonfly, Spyro sets out to free his buddies, while collecting gems and dragon eggs. Sparx also serves as Spyro's health-o-meter, glowing gold when Spyro is healthy and turning dusky green as he tires. To boost his energy, Spryo can blast docile creatures with fire, turning them into butterflies, which Sparx transforms into much-needed fuel.

This title has bright graphics in six well-developed worlds, each with several subworlds, including bogs, deserts, and ice worlds. Unlike some action games, in Spyro the Dragon the enemies are more fun than frightening. In the Peace Keepers world, for example, Spyro must burn down the monster soldiers' tent, sending one of the minions running out, quaking with fear or, if you're lucky, dropping his drawers and shooting a moon.

Spyro's movements (fire breathing, gliding, jumping, and climbing) require entry-level gaming skills. For this reason, Spyro the Dragon is an excellent title for youngsters or less experienced players, who want to play without having to master complex movement combinations. --Kasty Thomas

Pros:

  • Large worlds provide hours of game playing
  • Variety of scenarios

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game!
This game is really good, but not the best of all my games. The best is Spyro, Year of the Dragon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This game is byfar my favorite Spyro game! I am hoping to beat it in the next few days and I am saying it is king of hard but VERY VERY fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars! Classic!
Ah, Spyro! Released in 1998 for the PS1, Spyro is the first entry of many. [Although, only the first three were any good, because the newer ones were owned by an poor company.]

Graphics: 9/10: Horrible by today's standards, but very good by 1998 standards. Colorful and clear old-school 3-D graphics.

Music:10/10: Pretty catchy, nothing really grinds on your ears.

Sound: 8/10: Pretty good.

Gameplay:9.5/10: You control Spyro, the PO'd dragon, through many worlds. There he must collect gems, rescue dragons, fight enimies, bosses, and other dangers, and also use his trademark flame and charge moves. This game is a bit easy, but it's very entartaining.

The game costs about 10$ about now, so buy it! ... Read more

MKT is all of the charactors from MK 1,2 and 3 with 3's story. If you like the old school games, you'll love this one.

Pros:
*Features over 30 charactors.
*Has many fun codes and cheats.

Cons:
*Very outdated graphics(that's a given).
*Very, VERY hard to beat.
*No secret charactors to unlock.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whoo Hoo!!!
I found this game really awsome.I suggest anyone to buy this game if you are mature enough, and can handle a little blood.

5-0 out of 5 stars This game was almost perfect.
I did not own this game for Playstation, I owned it for PC. But they are exactly the same.

After an upgrade past windows 95, this game never would work on my PC again. But I have thought about getting the Playstaion for this game (or a rom, shhhh)

This game combined mortal kombat's 1, 2, 3 and another version, I forget the name into the one game. And that was a great move. Finally all the charactors where playable in the one game, even hidden charactors where findable like a cool charactor named Chameleon who was a ninja, but kept changing, he'd morph into scorpion, sub zero, reptile, rain ect...

All the charactors where there. But not all the backgrounds where, a few where missing. What made this game the best was turning on one button fatality isntead of memorising thousand step codes that wouldnt always work. You's just go to the options menu and hold Up, and the block buttons or something and it would let you access a secret option menu where you could select the cool cheats. One button fatalitys was the best, you could press one button when it said finish to do the finisher 1, 2, freind shipm animality ect.. this is still my favorite MK game. I have rated it here because the N64 version sucked and was not a trilogy, it was MK3 with a few extra charactors.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORTAL KOMBAT MAGNUM OPUS!!
Mortal Kombat Trilogy has everything a Mortal Kombat fan could ever ask for!All of the characters from MK I, II, III, and UMK III, all the fatalities, all the stages, an enhanced CD soundtrack (the music for the Rooftop/Pit III is the best tune!)I used to play this a lot with my one friend who lives in New York and he is the only other person who can beat me at Mortal Kombat.I'm undefeated against anyone else who challenges me.My favorite characters are Scorpion (GET OVER HERE!), Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn. The MK movie was good but it's sequel, Anniahlation sucked donkey balls. That was random, but oh well. This is a must-buy PS1 or PS2 game that is hard to find right now and a purchase that you won't regret.I still want MK: DA or MK:DE, but I will never ever sell this game!It didn't even cross my mind when I got a PS2 and sold my PS1.Don't listen to anything anyone says about this game not working on PS2 because it's not true.If you experience any problems it is because you need to turn off the Texture Smoothing and Disc Speed options that are unnecessary for this game which has great graphics on its own and fantastic music that runs at a normal speed.Buy this game! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars MK wraps up the 2D era pretty well
Mortal Kombat Trilogy was a great game. It, obviously compiles all of the first three MK games in one package and it's made even better with the one button fatalities, animalities, babalities, brutalities, and the friendships. I heard also, that you can also, for the first time play as my favorite charactar, Shao Kahn. The only problem, I feel I must warn you is that the game is as hard as Hell. This is pretty much the only problem with the 2D Mortal Kombat games. So, if you're in for a challange and you are a Mortal Kombat fan like I am, you might want to pick this up. ... Read more

Most attempts to tamper with the basic gameplay of Tetrishave fallen flat on their faces, but Tetris Plus is actually adecent take on the timeless classic. You can tackle a basic solo game ofTetris, challenge a friend in two-player mode, or go directly tothe best portion of the game: puzzle mode.

In puzzle mode, playerscontrol blocks as they descend from the top to the bottom of the screen. As they fall, you can spin blocks so that they land next tocorresponding colors at the bottom of the screen. Gameplay is just likethe original only with a few major twists. The bin that holds the piecesat the bottom of the screen starts out partially filled, while a littleprofessor character climbs on top of the stack. Your job is to clearlines of blocks so that the professor can reach the exit at the bottomof the bin before a spiked ceiling smacks him in the head. Two playerscan also duke it out in puzzle mode, sending cleared lines to theiropponent's bin. This isn't the best version of Tetris we've everplayed, but it does still manage to offer a lot of entertainment for itslow price. --T. Byrl Baker

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Tetris with a twist
Well, almost. The developers added a few new twists, the most interesting of which is the puzzle mode. Each puzzle level begins with the professor standing on a different pattern of blocks. You've got to clear the blocks out from under him to get him to the bottom. If you don't figure out the right way to solve this puzzle, he climbs to the top of the blocks you're stacking up. The game's over when the professor and the descending spiked ceiling collide. This version of the game is entertaining and even challenging, although after a while you begin to wonder why you're trying to rescue a guy who insists on climbing to his death. Other new additions include an edit mode that lets you create and save your own puzzles. A split-screen mode enables two people to play Tetris at the same time without competing against one another. In the regular VS mode, you can still play the computer or a friend. As with most new puzzle games, you can send blocks to your opponents screen when you clear a certain amount from your own -- in this case, two rows of blocks cleared from your screen means two rows of blocks sent to your opponent. If you like Tetris and you1re looking for a familiar, addictive game, this is the answer. Tetris Plus hasn't revolutionized puzzle games, but it's still fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Tetris sequel
Tetris became an instant classic when it was packaged with the Game Boy in 1989. But the most interesting thing about the game becoming so successful is the fact that it spawned so many sequels - each of which was unique in its own way. One of these sequels was Tetris Plus, in which the objective of the game was to save a professor from being smashed by a spiked ceiling, rather than scoring lines like in traditional Tetris games. How does this change of pace work out for the series? Read on and see.

PROS:
-The graphics here are much better than those in the Game Boy game of the same name.
-In addition to the new "rescue the professor" mode which is the main attraction of the game, there is the classic Tetris mode you should know and love.
-Like in most Tetris titles, there's a two-player mode (WELL worth checking out.)

CONS:
-The music, while very good, isn't nearly as catchy as the classical Russian music featured in the original Game Boy game.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a fine addition to the Tetris library. If you're a fan of puzzle games, then Tetris Plus is well worth checking out. Sure, it never got the recognition and popularity that the original did, but it's still excellent. Don't pass it by if you're a Playstation owner.

You want weird? Look no further than Oddworld: Abe'sOddysee. Mild-mannered factory worker Abe has discovered that hisemployers at Rupture Farms are planning to use his fellow Mudokons asthe main ingredient in their latest product, Mudokon Pops. Like anydecent Mudokon, Abe aims to rescue his peers. He also is determined toseek justice in his battle to bring down the corrupt Rupture Farms. Youhelp Abe carry out his heroic duties by possessing enemies, participating in action sequences worthy of an Indiana Jonesflick, and talking to fellow Mudokons using the game's impressive"gamespeak" feature, which allows multiple characters to communicatewith each other using your control pad.

The graphics in Abe's Oddyssee convey a unique personality, whichis often lacking in platform action games. Still, a few pretty gameenvironments will not distract you from the devious puzzles scatteredthroughout the game. Fortunately, you never run out of lives inOddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Instead, Abe rematerializes immediatelyafter you "die" and the game continues from the last checkpoint youreached. 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible game!!!
Oddworld Abe's Oddysee is the most overrated game on the PS1! Let me tell you why it's so bad. For starters, it's main selling-point is humor, and this ''humor'' is mostly made out of repetitive and boring fart jokes. Second...it's insainly dificult! You can't fight back. So this means you have to run away every time a bad guy sees you. The frustation doubles when you consider that you die after getting shot once. To top it all off the story is supposed to make you root for Abe. (the main character) But do you? NO!! Because he's extremly stupid and unlikable like the rest of his race! (Abe is trying to save them from becomeing food.) I say they deserve it. this is a bad game folks, very bad. Oh...and the voice overs are bad to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very challenging game
This game requires skill, luck and intelligence to solve all the puzzles in the game. It's a good thing to have infinite lives, but it's annoying to start over and over when you die. I highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes a challenge every now and then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oddworld=Funworld
I remember hearing about the Oddworld series when it first came out, and from what I heard a lot of people seemed to like it. But I didn't really think about it too much, however a couple days ago I got this game as a gift. I have to say, this is definitely one of the most innovative games out there. To me it's like a cross between Metal Gear Solid (because of the sneaking around) and Earthworm Jim (because of the weirdness). The story is amusing yet original, and it's interesting how things turn out for Abe (the main character) throughout the game. I won't get into any details about the story, don't want to spoil anything. The control is superb, as well is the music and the overall sound. The gameplay and graphics however, are the true highlights of this game. In the game, Abe is able to use weapons, sort of. However he doesn't have one throughout the game, the only way he can get them is through grenade machines (which only pump out one grenade at a time) or if he possesses a mind of a Slig, which are the only enemies that have guns. You are able to possess their minds through a kind of ritual chanting, you can control them however you want. You are also able to talk to fellow Mudokans (a tribe that Abe is from) that you have to save, and that's the whole point of the game is to save them but you have to be very sneaky to do it. Trust me it's not as easy as it sounds. What's cool is Abe doesn't just die, he regenerates. The problem is sometimes he regenerates at places you had the most trouble with, and you have to go all through it again. The graphics are some of the best I have seen on the Playstation console, the FMV's are flawless, no grainy pictures whatsoever. When you are controlling Abe, the environment is 2-D, but even then the graphics are still awesome and have a slight 3-D element. When you go into lifts and such, the game will change to 3-D, especially when you're in the bucket-like lifts or whatever. The only complaint I have about this game is it's EXTREMELY challenging, this game might seem suitable for little kids but trust me it's too hard for them. The person who said this game is too easy is lying, the guy never beat the game because this game is NOT EASY! There are difficult puzzles such as leading the Mudokans to safe portals and controlling enemies to your advantage. This game only has four types of enemies (scrabs, paramites, sligs, and slogs) but they're still a pain in the neck. The puzzles require perfect timing, constantly. This game is not forgiving at all and neither were the people who made it. It requires an excellent amount of patience, which I happen to have very little of. Either way, anyone who loves challenging (not to mention frustrating) games will definitely love this one. Regardless of the frustration factor, I highly recommend this game to any video gamer.

2-0 out of 5 stars fustrating
If you like games were you have to do everything over and over a thousand times before proceeding to the next area just to do that a thousand times more than this game is for you. But I don't consider that very fun. The controls are easy however and the game can be amusing and addictive at times but I certainly would not consider it very fun to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Times Ahead
I wasted many, many hours of sleep back in college with this game. It reminded me quite a bit of Tomb Raider, but I found it to be much moe fun than any of the Tomb Raider series.

The premise is deceptively simple--you must rescue 99 of your fellow Mudokons from becming canned ham. There are enough puzzles and traps to keep things hopping for a long time to come.
There are a number of special actions (such as disarming bombs) that are hard to consistenty master, but its worth the effort if you ccan master ihem.

I'd advise getting the strategy guide as well. It'll save you some grey hairs and bald spots. ... Read more

This is definitely the best of the Tekken series. No, not Tekken 4! Tekken 2. Everything in this game is awesome. The levels, the music score, and obvioulsy, the characters. If you want to save some doe, get this used for under $10 instead of Tekken 4, or Tekken 5 (which is coming soon and I plan on getting.) THIS GAME WAS A VERY GOOD GAME. BUT THIS AIN'T AS GOOD AS TEKKEN 1. 5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute classic
From the cool first cutcene to the classic music that plays while picking a character, you know this is special.
Don't just button mash, learn the combos because this is the only game(out of 100)that has made me curs at the TV. If you're a beginner, start of with someone with fast kicks like marchial Law and not Jack 2. BUY THIS because it's an ABSOLUTE CLASSIC.

This is a very good game for Playstation.u start with ten base characters who unlock ten others. There are three others u can unlock. There is no flaw to this game exept that the moves take a little time to figure out.this game does have a storyline, and a damn good too. This game also takes time to beat and get all ten characters. If you are a beginner u will take about 40 minutes to unlock characters. As u get the hang of u take less than a half hour.Well as i said this is a very good game. This is one of my favorites and i think u should try and u will probably like it. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a fighting game you can't miss out on.
What really exites me about this game is the way the music is put together, i mean the music is very well coordinated and the sound effects and movement are very smooth. I would have to say that my favorite arena on this game is yoshimitsiu's forest level then kazuya's mirror domain. all in all the backgrounds and graphics are the best you can get for a psx game. Also this game delivers a somewhat sadness to it and the environments of the game prove it. This would have to be my most favored tekken game ever. ... Read more

The classic arcade game Frogger snatched more than a few quarters back in the '80s. Hasbro's smash hit comes home with an entirely new look and sound. You'll hop through nine gaming worlds and dozens of levels in a new 3-D-based gaming environment. The game begins in familiar territory as the first levels are faithful 3-D re-creations of the classic arcade game. However, as you begin to progress deeper into the game, you'll find new areas that are equally challenging.

Whether or not you are a fan of the original game, Frogger stands on its own as a modern-day favorite. This title has consistently ranked among the top-selling home video games since its release. -- Brett Atwood

5-0 out of 5 stars cant beat the classics
When I was a kid I had one of the 1st versions of this game back in the 80's for my vic 20 computer then the version for the commodor 64 and i loved it then. the play station version is a great game too and has keep me up for hours playing it. if your looking for a modern style computer game this isnt for you but if you like the old style arcade games then this is a great buy and can give you many hours of entertainment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard, but fun.
Frogger is a hard game, but the original was no walk in the park, either. Good level design overall, even if the difficulty should be tone down a bit sometimes.

The multiplayer race feature is pretty fun, but it's nothing near classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blech
If I wasn't addicted to the original Frogger, I would say this game was actually pretty cool but I can't. I wanted to see the original for PS. This game is HARD. I hear the 2nd one is better but I haven't tried it yet. If you don't mind the new look and scene, go for it but if you are expecting the Atari version but updated, don't waste your money. There is only one board that is similar.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very difficult game
I purchased this game for my boys. It is so difficult that I have never completed level 4 anywhere(with 3 lifes each level). The graphics is just ok compared with some of the newer games. My boy(7) felt it was little too difficult too, he never completed level 5. My 3 1/2 year old boy passed the level one only a couple times out of hundreds of trial.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... and the music...
This game is one of my most fond childhood memories. Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur 2 are unbelievable as well but the one thing that they lack is the superior soundtrack of the original Soul Edge/Soul Blade. Sometimes it's nice to just go to BGM Listen mode and listen to "Wind and Clouds" overand over...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best 3-D Fighter!!!Read my IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS!!!
This is the same game as "Soul Edge" for PAL/Europe/Asia region.

When you win all your opponents in Arcade mode the last one you have to fight is Soul Edge. With HWANG I won all, including Mr. Soul Edge who is kind of a sculpless mode of Servantes who can fly and disappear during the battle. After you win him you will be able to enter your name into the hall of fame and will see a short cartoon. Sould Edge is two swords of "Soul Edge" which is believed to have a magnifinient destructive power making a fighter almost invinsible.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!

Make sure that before you play game activate L1,L2 and R1,R2 buttons of the controller. L1 and L2 will let you move left and right respectively in a 3-dimensional way. Likewise R1 and R2 are two super kicks of a fighter which you can exert in a close contact with your opponent.

To activate those features which make this game the best 3-D fighter in the market do the following steps.

1.When CD is loaded select OPTION with your "start" button.

2.From OPTION MENU select KEY CONFIG with either "circle", "triangle" of "squre" button of controller.

3. Using either "left" of "right" arrow buttons of controller configure your controller buttons regime to TYPE C.

4. Press START to exist and enjoy a full-featured 3-D fighter.

5. You have to do it everytime when you load your CD anew because the game is always being loaded with initial simplified key configuration.

I've played "Soul Edge" for PAL/Europe/Asia region about 5 years ago and just needed to remember how to change key configuration. Luckily I did remember, otherwise it would look like a cheap/flat/simple 2-D fighter "Tekken 3". Playing "Soul Blade" with a controller configured to TYPE C makes this game the best 3-D fighter at market, at least to my knowledge. :)

Good Luck!

this was an absolute dream to play. it may be slow at times, such as losing your weapon, but the gameplay more than makes up for this amazing game. it had a great storyline, characters and a huge array of weapons. the weapon master mode was frustrating but enjoyable. basically, buy this game, you need it, it will fill the void in your empty lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD SEQUEL, BUT THE NINTENDO 64 VERSION WAS EVEN BETTER
UNLIKE THE EARLIER MK GAMES, THIS ONE FEATURED SOME 3D GRAPHICS AND IT ALSO HAS WEAPONS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE TO USE OR THROW AT ANYTIME. THIS IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE NINTENDO 64 VERSION, BUT IT'S A GREAT FIGHTING GAME NONETHELESS AND I THINK IT'S BETTER THAN ANY OF THE MORTAL KOMBAT GAMES THAT'VE BEEN COMING OUT SINCE 1999. GREAT GRAPHICS, GREAT CONTROLS, AND A FUN PRACTICING MODE [WHICH YOU CAN FIGHT FOR HOURS IF YOU WANT TO WITH THE SAME OPPONENT!]. BUT UNFORTUNATELY AFTER THIS ONE, THE MORTAL KOMBAT FRANCHISE WENT COMPLETELY DOWNHILL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mortal Kombat has never disappointed me!!
I am quite surprised how many people thought this game wasn't any good.Mortal Kombat 4 is a more than worthy sequel.First off, the story, like all the other Mortal Kombat games, movies and TV shows, is incredible. If you saw many of the characters ending form Ultimate Mortal Kombat, then you'll have an idea what I am talking about. All their stories have a great lead up to MK4.In the fourth installation, Noob Saibot's master Shinnok takes his gamble at Earth Realm. However, we also learn about the truth behind Sub-Zero and Scorpion's hate for each other and the sorcerer who put them up to it!!!

This game introduces some really cool characters (like Quan Chi) and also some old characters return (like Johnny Cage). The fighting game has the usual classical engine, except now it is 3D.You can, for example, side shift to avoid Scorpion's spear!!Weapons were also introduced and everyone has got some ill weapons, especially Fujin!!You can also throw objects lying around at your opponent. The combo system is pretty good, nothing near as good to the fifth installation of Mortal Kombat though. The endings, until the previous Mortal Kombat's, are full videos and EXTREMELY AWESOME!!There's a lot of game replay here by beating the game with different fighters. You learn a lot about the tournament's secrets and who's got beef with whom.

This game is worth getting for ANY fan of a great fighting game.Too many people are extremely critical of the Mortal Kombat franchise and WAY too kind to others (Soul Caliber, Tekken - need I say more about these crappy fighting games).Mortal Kombat kreators really go out of their way for the fans to make their games unique and loads of fun, so don't pass up on Mortal Kombat 4!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars mortal kombat 4 rules!
mortal kombat 4 is one of the best,no the best fighting game for playstation 1.i have mortal kombat deadly alliance for playstation 2 and that game is the best game for playstation 2.most people call me a gamefreak and i take that as a compliment.i am a little bit famous for writing good revews.mortal kombat 4 is so tight but there is one thing that sickens me.where in the hell is kung lao, shang tsung, and shao kahn?and why in the blue hell is this goro.and liu kang's last game?liu kang and shao kahn die at the begining of deadly alliance and it says goro was killed by nobb sabiot.a lot of people think kano killed goro, but if you have mortal kombat tournament edition for game boy advance in nobb sabiot's ending it shows nobb sneaking up behind goro and cheating(like there are any rules anyway)to defeat and kill goro in the war.and right after kano and people give up because shao khan is dead because of shang tsung and quan chi.but mortal kombat 4 is still very great.i love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
MK finally comes into the 3D realm in this game. I only wish there were more characters, and I miss the animalities, babalities, brutalities, and friendships. But overall, it's good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worst MK game ever!!!!!
The only reason I gave this game two stars is because I am an Mortal Kombat Fan but this game sucks!!!It was way to easy you know I loved mortal kombat trilogy because it was hard as h*ll and when I beat it I was so happy and said to my self I can't wait till the next game!!!Yet this is just bad you don't even have to learn the peoples moves any more. You just have to take out your weapon and hack'em to death it just sucks. Then I went and rentid Mortal Kombat:DA and I do admit harder then this peice of $h!t!!!Yet still the weopons are still there and now you can stab them in the gut and leave it there so the person you fight slowly dies.So what I'm saying is stick with 1,2,3 and Trilogy they are way better. ... Editorial Review

No question about it: Doom is one of the greatest games of all time. The blend of a simple, yet compelling mission, breakthrough 3-D interface, brilliant level and weapon design, and the effective use of fear made Doom an instant classic and launched a revolution in computer games. Born on the PC, this game has been ported to almost everything imaginable, and the PlayStation port is one of the best.

You play the part of a space marine who was stationed on a research station on the Martian moon, Phobos. Something went very wrong when the researchers opened an extradimensional portal. Now you're trapped far from home, grabbing guns and ammo to blast the demons. A one-man crusade, you shoot everything that moves--and, likewise, everything that moves tries to return the favor.

This was the game that launched the multiplayer craze on the PC, and the PlayStation version does its best to live up to Doom's reputation as the ultimate multiplayer deathmatch game.If you have two players, two PlayStations, and a link cable, you can enjoy some mad two-player mayhem.

A few words of caution: remember that Doom was the first wildly successful first-person shooter, and while its graphics were astounding for its era, it hasn't aged well. If you want the latest and greatest graphics, you'll be disappointed, but if you're into quality gaming and appreciate history, you'll still get a huge blast out of Doom. --John Cocking

5-0 out of 5 stars After over a decade, Doom still stands the test of time
Doom(1995). The Playstation rerelease of the 1993 classic, and also including the expansion, Ultimate Doom, and its sequel, Doom II.

In this day in age, it's not that hard to take first person shooters for granted. They're EVERYWHERE in every shape and form on every system, literally clones of clones in a sense. What's even harder now is spotting the true gems that stand out within the genre. However, back in 1993 the FPS was unheard of commercially, and as difficult as it is to believe, the genre was a major revolution to gaming. Out of nowhere, the company iD Software showed up and introduced Wolfenstein 3D, the first real FPS. While it does stand as a gaming milestone of the early 90s, it didn't quite take off in the public. What did succeed however was their next project, which consisted of heavy weaponry, lengthy levels, demon slaughtering, BFG 9000s, and key collecting: the legendary Doom.

Anyone who first experienced the game back in its height of popularity knows that Doom wasn't just a game, but a phenomenon. It has always consumed gamers (and continues to do so) into its ever addicting gameplay without compromise. The premise here is really simple: A base on Mars is attacked by Demons through a portal from Hell, and so the higher ups send the whole military platoon in to take care of the situation while you stand guard at the portal entrance. Of course, everyone gets wiped out except for you and now it's your job to go in and eliminate every last one Hell's minions. Yeah, it's a dumb story and it was eventually improved drastically with Doom 3 many years later, but the one aspect that makes these older Doom games superior to Doom 3 is that its simplistic storyline allows you to pick up the game from the get-go. There's no 30-minute CG cutscenes to introduce the game to you. There's no hour-long tutorial demonstrating how to play the game. No, immediately upon starting you're thrusted right into gameplay, and quite honestly I wouldn't have it any other way. Doom is to 3D what Contra is to 2D gaming: an instant, immersive, and entertaining experience, albeit somewhat mindless.

Of course, most Halo and Unreal Tournament gamers of today will blindly slag off Doom simply because the game is old and because of its archaic graphics. Yes, the graphics do date this game a bit, plus its bloody, violent visuals look a lot more like a cartoon now than it did ten years ago, but people need to wake up and realize that a game is not fun solely based on how great the graphics are. The visuals are primitive, but you won't really care once you become immersed in the game.

Another common complaint about Doom from people now is that "all you do is shoot monsters and collect keys". True, newer FPSs offer different things to do, but people take Doom's simplicity merely at face value and they seem to miss the point. One thing that Doom has on most other FPS games is in its ingenious level designs. The creators really took the time to make its monsters, levels, and the overall experience memorable in a way that makes you want to come back for more. The differences between Doom and Doom II may only seem like cosmetic upgrades, but as the games go along, the mazes become more and more intricate and cleverly designed. Having story missions and goals to complete is fun, but not at the expense of completely non-linear gameplay. Doom never skimps out on this aspect.

Obviously the PC versions of the games are the best ones to play, but for those who happen to have a PS1/PS2 and caught onto Doom at a later date, this version will give you a real bang for your buck. With 2 games and an expansion, the whole package here offers about 60 levels, and 5 difficulty levels of nonstop action. One thing that is improved from the PC version is the sound. All the sound effects and monsters have improved noises, and all the droning level songs from the PC are replaced by an atmospheric, at times errie background soundtrack. As a Doom player for many years now, I believe this makes Doom that much better. Plus, the game feels very natural with a PS1 controller. Also, if you can ever find 2 PS1s, a link cable, 2 Doom games, and 2 TVs, the multiplayer option is well worth it.

While other FPS games after Doom added a few new things here and there, very few were able to capitalize on Doom's greatest strength, which is its design. In fact, the only other FPS series to really impress me besides Doom is Half-life. I know that this review sounds like a bunch of praise, but a lot of the popular complaints are really nothing but hot air. However, I do wish that you could save the game via memory card instead of having to copy down passwords. That's my only gripe though. I give Doom my highest recommendation to open gamers looking for a challenge and a way to kill time. It's one of my all-time favorite games. In time, you too will agree that there's nothing quite like taking out a room full of zombie soldiers with a single double-barrel shotgun blast, jumping out of your seat as a group of angry imps pops out of a "monster closet"(hahaha), and dodging ferocious attacks by Barons Of Hell while you find health and attempt to take them out with a shotgun.

Replayability: Very high. It's Doom. That's all that needs to be said.

Other recommendations:
-Final Doom (PC/PS1)
-Doom 3 (PC)
-Half-life (PC)
-Half-life 2 (PC)
-Jedi-Knight: Dark Forces II (PC)

4-0 out of 5 stars Doom - Playstation version
Doom for PS1 is a great game. Almost every level from Ultimate Doom & Doom II is here, plus some new levels never before seen on the PC. This game is dark, scary as hell, and can really get in your head. The soundtrack is totally different from the PC, and creates a very eerie atmosphere that few games ever do. The controls are easy to learn, that's a good thing. However, the only reason why I gave this game 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the graphics. Yes, as you may have already read, the graphics are a bit sluggish, especially when compared to the PC version. In my opinion, the best version of Doom is the PC version, period. Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom are the best video games ever, in MY opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best game of all time
I saw Doom for the first time about 10 years ago when a friend of mine was playing it on his computer....and up until that point, playing old 8-bit Nintendo games summed up a fun day for me. Don't get me wrong, and I'm not knocking some NES classics here at all by any means, but I must say, I fell in love with Doom the moment I saw it. Too bad the (...) was so hooked too that he wouldn't let me play.
So....fast forward to the release of the Playstation....and the eventual release of Doom. I bought Doom the first day it came out....and my Playstation wasn't turned off for 32 straight hours. I ABSOLUTELY love first-person shooter type games, and aside from Rise Of The Triad (the first FPS I ever played) Doom turned my world upside down.
This is, by far, the best video game on the planet....hell, in the universe.

The translation from the PC to the Playstation was flawless....hell, in my opinion, it's even better. You get all of the Doom and Doom II levels, and an additional 5 secret levels custom-made for the Playstation only. That's 59 total levels of mayhem....an immersive quest that you can NOT tear yourself away from.

Sure, by today's standards, the graphics are primitive and full of sprites and look a little blocky when you're up close....the enemies and items are modeled in 2D, meaning you can never look at their backside....and heck, you can't even jump....but....WHO CARES? This game is heaven, and even today, will still scare the (...) out of you....even if you memorized the location of every enemy in the game, knowing what to expect around every corner.
Don't believe me? Well try this situation on for size: You just cleared out a room full of Imps and Sergeant Zombies with every last round of shotgun ammo you had. You turn the next corner and hello....there's a Baron of Hell. *Change weapon to BFG9000* (...), you only have enough ammo for one shot. You aim, shoot, and barely hit the moron. He's still coming at you....and, as you cycle through your weapons....you notice only your pistol has ammo left. Oh (...). *runs*
That right there is the definition of fun....excitement....and horror....all making this game the number one video game of all time.

11 out of 10....and yes I did that on purpose....as Doom is more than perfect....
