Amazon.com Review NASCAR Racing Season 2003 features 23 venues including all the real-world tracks in the Winston Cup series, every major driver, and all the licensing NASCAR is famous for. Theres advertising everywhere, from M&Ms to Cingular Wireless and AOL, but that only makes the game look more realistic. True to the NASCAR Racing legacy, this isnt an arcade racing game. You can crank the realism settings up and expect to race in all the qualifying rounds to determine your place in the opening pack for the race itself. You can set the physics to perfectly model the real world, where you have to fight your car every step of the way. Set the AI to maximum and youll have to battle for every inch of track space. You can even tweak the tire pressure and brakes, and set how your pit crew behaves. Its a race fan and grease monkeys dream come true. Less hardcore fans have the option of dialing down the realism settings. You can add a green line to the track showing the ideal route, let the computer help you with traction, steering, and braking, and even set unlimited fuel and unbreakable cars. Admirably, Papyrus puts you in charge of your NASCAR experience. The graphics are decent, better than last season but behind the curve when compared with other games. Cars look good up close, and the sense of speed is extremely realistic. The sun glints in your windshield and the smoke effects are impressive. But farther way, even at the highest detail settings, there are problems with shimmering and jagged lines around cars and objects. The audio is perfect, from the pit crew giving advice to the roar of the engines; its all very convincing. NASCAR may look like a crowd of cars all turning left but in reality its split second timing, daring, and skill. It's not easy riding an oval for 20-200 laps at high speed with little margin for error, or passing a crowd of 10 two-ton vehicles all hurtling along in excess of 170MPH. This game perfectly shows just how hard NASCAR racing can be. One word of caution before you get the green light: the keyboard or a game pad will let you play reasonably well, but youll never take the checkered flag without a good force feedback steering wheel. --Bob Andrews Pros: Reviews (50)
the community is keeping this game alive, upto date car paint schemes and the mods are great. Project Wildfire has released many mods that are just amazing for this game (Truck series, Busch Series, IROC and a trans am mod for all you road racers, plus over a dozen new tracks from PWF and tons of tracks from many other mod teams) get a wheel pedal combo, a good vid card and get into community and you'll find this game is still going very strong even after papy has moved away from the PC sims. if your a PC sim fan, Papys games are the only games you want, EA's Nascar games are for arcade fans with Xbox's. i can get from 50-80fps with: ------------------

It features over 30 species of freshwater gamefish including Stripers, Walleyes, Catfish and Muskies. On your boat, you will have 1000's of rod, reel and lure combinations available to you along with underwater sonar, map and compass and two kinds of motor propulsion. You can play either single fishing trip, career mode or even online in the multiplayer link-ups, fishing on dozens of reknowned lakes throughout the USA. There is so much to this game that I cannot begin to give it justice.I'm 'hooked' and I can't even fish for 'reel'! (almost a pun there).

Which is precisely why I prefer an old classic road car such as my humble 1500cc, 1971 VW Beetle, as opposed to a modern day all bells ringing, singing and dancing, clinical, spiritless non-DIY friendly modern day high performance vehicle. Creature comforts aside, you don't have to break the speed limit nor the bank to experience the physical limitations of such cars. Need I say anymore? Case rested. For those who don't know now. You'll never know. Your loss is my gain. Of course if you're of adequate means the above isn't an issue. Simply pay your fee and enjoy your track day etc. :) Well done Sierra for enlightening the previously unfamiliar..! Sonicpixy

But, have any of those gamers actually played thisgame? I have. It's not my type of game, but I can see how it would befun. Check out the screenshots: it's pretty funny watching a bull kick acowboy sky high. The graphics are actually decent. It's not like this issome Wizardworks piece of garbage; it's Sierra, and Sierra makes qualitygames. So, yes, it's not a sophisticated work of art like Deus Ex orSystem Shock 2. It won't keep you playing for hours and hours like Diablo2. But it's a fun little diversion, it's fun, and it does a great jobsatisfying a niche. Those who are into bull riding and rodeos will reallylike this game. My question is, are people who are really into rodeos andbull riding also computer owners? Apparently so, because Sierra madeProfessional Bull Rider 2...

Amazon.com Review With the right processor and video card, NASCAR Racing 4 cangenerate visuals that are difficult to distinguish from TV broadcasts.Smoke from burnouts and collisions can hang in the air for minutes, andthe new physics model means cars hunker down on their shocks whilebraking and turning. The tracks are all cracked and pitted, with tiremarks and oil trails slowly building up on the standard racing lines. The cars feature immaculate paint jobs that are fully customizableusing the included painting tools. Those shiny cars can quickly lose their luster thanks to the new damagemodel. Minor bumps and scrapes can take the paint off, while majoraltercations can leave you with bent wheels, a crumpled hood thatobscures your vision, or any of a million other problems. The car'shandling changes based on the damage it has suffered, sometimes pullingso violently to the right or left that racing becomes impossible. Anadded effect of the new physics model is that cars can finally getairborne, making wrecks more realistic than any seen in a NASCARsimulation. The single-player mode offers computer-controlled opponents that driverealistically, although they can be too aggressive if you're on a linethey want. It's much more fun to build some skill in the single-playergame and then migrate to online play, where drivers from around theworld perpetually challenge one another. NASCAR Racing 4 isn'tperfect at this point, but a few patches should correct what minorflaws it has, and it still stands as the best NASCAR simulation evercreated. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Reviews (50)
Handling your car can be a slight boo-boo, unless you download the patch, where not only will you then exceed in winning some famous races, but become more skilled for multiplayer races. Just listen to the major BOOM when you smash head on into one of those Nascar cars at 190 m.p.h.We've got some major sound effects!!Many other great sounds, like screeching the tires, tires exploding, you name it. Also, want to paint your own vehicle?Go to the paintshop.Save a few images from the internet and put them on your car! If you want, you can operate on your car, tune it any way you want! That's the reformation of a great Nascar game, people.Bright, sophisticated, brilliant details and graphics and gameplay make this the worthy, leading successor of all the Nascar games out there for the PC.

Amazon.com Review But, with all the toothy weapons, power-ups and nasty surprises, it's not always the BFD-equipped grunt that wins the day. Weapons, armor, and power-ups are essential, but sometimes it's the odd or unexpected combination of gear and guns that's going to make the difference. This is also true, significantly, for the death match, where any number of variables now make for a more intense and even multiplayer melee. Single players have cause for rejoicing as well. A more logical and integrated mission-driven option actually manages to string together a crude story line. It's enough to infuse some genuine chills as the mission progresses deep within the bowels of the blasted-out complex. --Tamara Hladik Reviews (8)

Amazon.com Review We really like the improvements that have been made to the game's special effects, available for those of us with 3-D accelerator cards. The smoke and dust effects are particularly convincing compared to those of the previous version. Audio is also much improved, and gamers with 3-D audio cards can enjoy some eerily realistic surround sound effects. It's possible to tell where another car is in relation to you simply by listening closely. Novices can turn down many of the simulation's realism options and basically transform the simulation into an arcade game, but seasoned racers are still free to roll up their sleeves and modify virtually every aspect of their cars. From the amount of duct tape to put on the grille, to infinitesimally small changes in the stagger of the tires, if you can do it in real life you can probably do it in the game. Races take place on a variety of familiar tracks. Darlington, Talladega, the Milwaukee Mile, Sears Point, Watkins Glen, and 23 other familiar ovals and road courses are rendered in superb detail. The excellent manual outlines the history of each venue and provides tips for car setups so beginners can get started right away. If people have ever told you that NASCAR racing is boring because all you have to do is turn left, put them behind the wheel of NASCAR 3 so they can see firsthand what it's really all about. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Reviews (8)
Right away, you're going to feel like you're actually on the track. The 3D affects are very good, and the graphics are awesome.Don't consider buying the game though, unless you're going to also purchase a steering wheel, and pedals (sold seperately). Like any game on the market, there are room for some minor improvements, but don't let that stop you from experiencing the thrill of competing against others on the track. If you feel the need for speed, then this is the game for you. This is definately 5 star fun !

Amazon.com Review NASCAR Legends was made with hard-core motor purists in mind. Inside each prerace garage, drivers can tweak such car characteristics as tire pressure, suspension, gear ratios, and screw jacks. Gamers looking for an arcade racing game like Need for Speed need not apply; NASCAR Legends's rigorous dedication to statistics offers a complex, yet rewarding gaming experience. For optimum performance, use a Direct3D-based accelerator card to achieve crisp graphics and smooth frame rates, and a steering controller to master the tough turns. --Doug Radcliffe Pros: Reviews (4)
Tracks: AlabamaMotor Speedway (now Talladega), Atlanta Int'l Raceway, Bowman Gray Stadium, Bristol Intern'l Speedway, Charlotte (now Lowe's) Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Martinsville Speedway, Michigan Speedway, N.C.-Rockingham Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Ontario Motor Speedway, Richmond Fairgrounds, Riverside International (no longer in existence), Texas World Speedway, and Thompson Speedway.Overall, a good mix of superspeedways and short-tracks with one road course.

The graphics are ok, but I really think they could have done a much better job in this area. The cowboy animations are pretty good and the bull animations look good from behind. But when you see the bull from the side it looks stiff and unnatural.Thecowboys are all the same height in the game and there is only one face for all the cowboys with different facial hair added. There are a good number of real bulls in the game and a lot of bulls created by Sierra.I would like to see any future versions have all real bulls. There are lots of little things like that that they could have done to the game to make it feel more realistic. If Sierra is going to pursue this market, the least they can do is add all the little perks that they do for the other sports games. Sierra has made good bullriding game in Professional Bullrider 2.It remains to be seen if they can make a great bullriding game.

Amazon.com Review Racers can use the keyboard, a joystick, or the mouse to control theremote-control car they chose. The keyboard option is extremely squirrelly, mousing iseasier, and, well, there's a reason joysticks are called what they are. Playerscan race the computer, go solo around the tracks, race another player, or get ona circuit and race for "money" that they can use to buy upgrades for theirvehicles. For the truly helpless, there's a controlled steering option thatdrives the car around the track automatically as the player supplies theacceleration. Players also have the option of enabling or disabling power-ups onthe tracks--pick these up and your car can inflict bottle rockets, oil slicks, electrical arcs, and more on opponents. There are also a couple of nonracinggames: a soccer game with cars as players, and battle ball, a game in whichplayers use their cars to hit balls into a pit. This Windows-only game's strongest points are the 16 tracks that range fromsimple to insane, and the way players can manipulate the program to suit andsatisfy a wide range of racing skills. Racing-impaired testers had fun avoidingdemented lawn dwarfs in Backyard, and dodging wayward amphibians that hop out ofFrog Pond. Meanwhile, tracks like Haunted and Aztec challenged the truegearheads. Just watch out for that nasty chicken on Hillbilly Hill. --AnneErickson Reviews (4)
As a huge positive, I truely enjoy being able to play with two people atthe same time on the same computer. However it would be nice to have thechoice of playing on the same screen, rather than only using the splitscreen (though I understand the necessity when the two racers are atdifferent parts of the course). The eight tracks are enjoyable anddifferent...can be a lot of fun, though when the dog jumps out to eat myson's car he gets a little scared. My biggest complaint is the problem'sI have when using my joystick to play, it is so screwy that I usually justuse the keyboard to steer. Overall I give the game a 4, it is a lot offun, though the serious gamer might get bored with it after a while.Ilove the extra features you can pick up like firecrackers and rockets toshoot at the other cars.

Amazon.com Review The running commentary is funny at first but wears after a while--but that's what volume controls are for. You'll find yourself returning time and again to tranquilize humans into the Stone Age, avenging not just your white-tailed love but also every moose, pheasant, and wild turkey cut down in the prime of life. Game controls are simple, and the animation is good but not outstanding. Game play is fun and moderately challenging once you get used to the system humor. The violence may not be appropriate for small children, but teens and teens-at-heart will love Deer Avenger 2.--Rob Lightner Reviews (7)

The environment in "Deer 3D" is a excellent evolution from the first person side-scrolling in "Deer and Deer 2".Not knowing how much previous experience that S&S has with "true" 3D environments ("Bass" is really 2D with a third person perspective) this feels like a good start with somewhat usable terrain features. With a few small beefs.Either I haven't figured it out yet, or you can't climb the trees. An obvious hunters perch. Also do the trees factor into how hard it is for the hunter to hit you?If not they should, cover and concealment after all.And one observation. Is it just me, or are there no negative elevation values on the ground? There seems to be a definite level ground or zero point and it stays at zero or goes up from there, with the very obvious hills. But nothing going down. The weapon collection is interesting, with one suggestion.Unless I haven't pulled it off yet, there's no "one shot kills."Any of the weapons have the very real potential to do it "quick n clean" but not in the game. This may be an obvious choice by S&S to increase the difficulty, or keep it a lighthearted fun game. But the possibility of it, controlled or random, would be nice. As with "Bass" (see my review) this is not for the serious player of RPGs or RTSGs, looking to tax their new computer or graphics card. But for those of us loyalists that were hooked by the first "Avenger" it's GREAT.The only reasons that I'm not giving it five stars I've mentioned above. With the way they're advancing, if S&S takes this concept any further. There is a possibility that the next one can compete directly with the current flock of "serious" 1st person 3D shooters.
There are several weapons to be used as you progress in the game, both attacking ones and attracting ones (pizza, beer, etc.)There are also 'attractive' sounds used to lure the unsuspecting hunter. I found the graphics in this game to be a bit behind the technology although the sound is appropriate for the scenario. Playing the game only stays interesting for the first few hunts as a typical gamer will find that this game is too easy and offeres very few twists and turns. Installation was quick and without glitches. So buy it as a fun gift, but don't think that it will keep the recipient busy for any lenght of time. ... Read more | |
