Amazon.com Product Description In single play, gamers can choose to command the Allies and crush this new threat to freedom, or choose to lead the Soviets and punish this would-be usurper of the Soviet global vision. In multiplayer mode, you'll command Yuri's devastating army using devious weapons based on forbidden technologies: psychic thought, genetics, and cloning. See your brutes flip over tanks with their bare hands, unleash your dominator and control scores of enemy troops, or use a virus to infect opposing forces foolish enough to resist you. With 10 new cooperative missions, gamers have more interesting options than just fighting head-to-head. An improved multiplayer and tournament interface will make it easier than ever to find opponents and allies. Both the Allied and Soviet armies get new, powerful weapons. The Allies boast aRobot Control Center and Chrono Prison. Amongst the new Soviet weaponry is the Siege Chopper and Boris, a machine-gun-toting commando that can call down laser-guided bombing strikes. The high-quality in-game movies tell the story of Yuri and his insidious plot. The popular characters of Red Alert 2, such as Tanya and Romanov, are back to wage war in cities around the world, including London, Cairo, and San Francisco. Reviews (258)

Amazon.com Review Red Alert 2 is very similar to the original Red Alert, withsome visual enhancements andgameplay improvements brought in from the recent Command & Conquer:Tiberian Sun game. You still lead a small group of infantry and armored units in most missionsand you still have to assemble abase of operations in order to accomplish just about anything. This timearound, however, you'll have aslew of new units to build and command in the field--most of which are prettyslick. The American PrismTank, for example, can take out numerous enemy units with a single, branchingattack. On the Soviet side,Tesla Troopers and Psychics help make ground troops a formidable asset. Another nice addition to the game is the ability to garrison troops insidebuildings. Because much of thefighting is on city streets, it helps to give your troops some cover fromtime to time. Also, there are anumber of special buildings that provide unique advantages once occupied byengineer units. The airportallows you to call in air strikes, for example, while oil derricks provide aresource boost for your warmachine. Multiplayer support is still the calling card of this series, and fans ofpast C&C games will not bedisappointed by Red Alert 2's multiplayer options. The basicfree-for-all mode that the originalRed Alert made famous is still intact, but the alternative multiplayermodes are the real treat. InUnholy Alliance, players get access to both American and Soviet tech trees, while the naval war variantstarts each player off on a small island. In addition, the game includesspecial cooperative campaigns. There's no denying Red Alert 2's charm, despite the lack of a funky3-D engine and the game'sreliance on ultracheeseball video cut scenes to tell the story (Kari Wuhreror no Kari Wuhrer). For fast- paced, real-time strategy action that focuses on quick, intense firefights onAmerican soil, no other gameholds a candle to C&C: Red Alert 2. --Michael Ryan Pros: Reviews (71)

Ok, you may ask yourself what I am thinking for writing the headline. But ask yourself this. What combat strategy games do we have today? The follow up to Red Alert (2) is of course a lot better graphic-wise. The music in my opinion, is actually a step backwards since I think much of the music in that game is pretty annoying in the long-run. BUT, that is just me mumbling about the cons, and odds of each of the games. WHAT MAKES RED ALERT SO MUCH BETTER? Well for starters, it is so well balanced. The Soviets have their might and power, while the Allies have their speed and agility. Have you tried this game on the internet? What a treat it is! If you haven't experienced it, you should. It really wakes a new adrenaline hormone inside the body, you know.. I've played the game on the internet for about two years, and never really gotten bored with it. Using the Q button to control tanks while shooting is a real must-learn if you want to get good at it, since using the X button really doesn't help much since all the tanks do is scatter instead of shoot. I am mentioning this, because they removed the fun Q button option in the second game, something I think is a bummer. Because then it's really just about building the biggest army, and attacking. Nothing about skill in the mouse control department: No dodging shots, like in the original beautiful Red Alert. Oh, before I let you off, there is one more thing you SHOULD know. Aftermath is the expansion pack to Red Alert, and if you want to try it out on the internet, you really shouldn't be without it. It adds some nice new music to Red Alert, some great new units, and some more tweaking of the weapons and armour, balancing out the two sides even more! THE SOVIETS Plus, there are tons of new maps to use on the internet here too. That was about it I had to say about Red Alert (with Aftermath.) I really can't recommend it enough. It truly is an amazing game! I play on the Westwood Tournament System as "Xanitra" so if you see me on the ladder, why not play me:) If you say you bought the game because you did read my review of the game here on amazon.com, I might just go easy on you, or even let you win:D hehehehe.. Well, why is Red Alert so much better internet-wise than all the other new ones I've played? The answer probably is; they don't make em like they used to I guess..Well, good luck with your choice in games.
In red alert ore is the heart of your strategy. Controlling and dominating the ore on the map is the key. This might be a shock to age of empires or total annililation fans who are used to producing vast amount of resource in camp. No in red alert you send out defenseless ore trucks to harvest and protecting them becomes harder as the game progresses and the trucks have to go further away from the confines of your camp. While you can eventually build an mcv and start a second camp you have nowhere the flexability or mobility you have in those other games. The worst is when you start a second camp only to have it destroyed and all that money was wasted because it is very difficult to protect more than one camp so try and conceal it if you can. The units while not as numerous or interesting as TA are more than adequate. The soviets(russia or ukraine) have the bigger tanks and the better air force while the allies(england, france, germany) have smaller quicker tanks with the superior navy. The concept is cold war not WW2 as some have said. Germany is an ally while the soviets are the enemy. Now i don't actually own this package rather i have owned the components for years. My question for those who actually own this package is whether it all comes on one disc or not. I have counter strike and aftermath but i don't have access to both at the same time. If all of those units and missions are available on the same disc it only makes the package an even better value. ...................socks ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Review GDI players get to build and command mobile EMP cannons, long-range Juggernaut artillery units, and the mighty mobile war factory, which allows you to build military units at just about any location on the battlefield. NOD players get a mobile stealth generator, a diabolical cyborg unit called the Reaper, and their own version of the mobile war factory, dubbed The Fist of NOD. In addition, many of the original Tiberian Sun units have been upgraded or enhanced in Firestorm. Another cool feature is the new World Domination multiplayer mode. In World Domination, literally thousands of players can take part in a tournament between GDI and NOD, as each side tries to take over the entire world. With the world map divided up into many small regions, players attempt to help their side by winning one region at a time. Once one side has control of the entire globe, the game resets. Despite the hype surrounding its development and release, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun did little to revolutionize the real-time strategy genre. It did, however, provide more of the classic RTS game play that made the original Command & Conquer and its Red Alert prequel so popular. The same holds true for Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. --Michael E. Ryan Pros: Reviews (22)
-the ten year old
That brings us to the main reason for buying any expansion pack. The missions. Firestorm gives you 18 original missions(9 for each side) and they are all fun and well thought out. These missions assume you already know how to play the game and include some creative additions you have not seen before. The video included is actually pretty good and very entertaining. I highly recommend them. As for multiplay there are also many exellent additions yet they lack popularity. While it's still fairly easy to find a game at the TS site the number of firestorm players is somewhat limited. Westwood came up with the neat idea of having a "tour for world domination". A site where you can take the gdi or nod and fight against the other side for the purpose of defending territory for your side or taking territory from the other side. For this purpose westwood sets up games yet you will find very few people to play them. In short tiberian sun is a game that is still a great deal of fun with graphics and game play that are still up to date today. Firstorm is a worthy expansion pack but it's simply not worth the price when you can get the fire power package for the same cost. ......................socks
The missions are by far better than Tiberian Sun, making this a most enjoyable game.If you feel lucky, you might want to try the World Domination Tour.I tried it and boy is the CPU hard. GDI has awesome new units like a Mobile EMP, Mobile War Factory, and Drop Pod Control Plug for on the Upgrade Center. NOD has new units too, but not as exciting as GDI's.They include a Mobile Stealth Generator, Fist of Nod(MWF), and my favorite, the Cyborg Reaper.

Amazon.com Product Description Command & Conquer: Red Alert gives you the opportunity to be more devious, cunning, and ruthless than ever before. Easy to play and highly addictive, Red Alert puts the fate of the world in your hands. Reviews (21)
The previous reviewer who said that today's RTS games are too slow was correct. Red Alert really was about fast-paced battles, and the computer AI was one of the best and perhaps the most fun to play. One on one skirmishes against the computer, if played correctly, could be over in 10 minutes. The speed of the battles and the huge armies that you could create were amazing. The huge armies were only so much fun back then because they were actually hard to get. Now they are so easy. You build base defense, wait for your queues to finish, assign teams to numbers 1-0, and then move in to destroy player x. I play Red Alert 2 on the fastest speed setting and even then, the games always last twice and even three times as long as old Red Alert games. The acting and the stories in the movies was even better. The allied side had more character to it, unlike the RA 2 allies, who seem as deep as a sheet of paper. I especially missed the soviet side, which had more sense of story to it and Nadia's "Thanks... I made it myself," line. It was also nice to be in an actual briefing room with your other commanders as it gave a sense of urgency and made you actually fear for your life at times, not knowing what was going to happen in the movies. In short, the movies had more story to them, they were longer, and the characters were so much more memorable and at times believable. Superweapons were fun in the original RA, but now they seem corny in RA 2. As for unit tactics, you won't find them in this game but you'll find much more than that. You'll find battle tactics. Unit tactics, I think, were an effort to improve micromangement by making it more fun. And to some degree, it is, but it tires easily. That first big rush by the computer is something I miss a lot. The computer just keeps sending tank after tank after tank and you can never have good enough base defense. I also remember playing modem games allied with a friend of mine against the computer, and they were much more fun than any online games of Starcraft (which is separated into about 5 main categories: rush, normal game with limited resources, BGH with unlimited resources, role-playing game, and survive for x minutes while defending x structure) and much better than any game of C&C tiberian sun, red alert 2, etc. Build queues, making individual units have special functions, and other things such as formation and unit behaviors are really quite crappy in comparison to the gameplay in this game. I still appreciate that stuff but I liked the urgency and fast-paced battles in this game. I know it's not nostalgia either. The first RTS game I played was Warcraft II, and I played lots of modem games with that as well. I don't think a game developer has to do more than create a solid game for it to have an audience. The only other game I could place in this "holy category" would have to be half-life. Prior to buying half-life, I had played Quake, Quake II, Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3d, etc. These two games weren't the first, but they're definitely the most polished. If someone made a Red Alert with updated graphics, I'd buy it right away. That's probably the only thing that made me stop playing. Other games had better graphics...
It is the pace of Red Alert that distinguishes it from some of the older classics, such as the original Command & Conquer and Dune II. After you've played this game, the other ones will seem to be going in slow motion. Multiplayer games in Red Alert are frequently over within 20 minutes, and the actual outcomes can be determined in skirmishes that last just seconds. What is probably most appealing about this is the fact that it's realistic- 20 minutes is about right for a real battle. Unlike the long slugging matches and wars of attrition you can get into in some other real-time strategy titles, you will never get into a deadlock in Red Alert. For those of you who were appalled by the AI in old Command & Conquer (more like, the lack thereof), the Red Alert AI is much improved. You won't see an enemy army camped peacefully in the middle of your base anymore, and they can actually fight in multiplay. The single player missions are challenging, and have a great plot. You definitely get a feel for both sides and what they are fighting for, and the acting- though at times somewhat painful- was a good backdrop for the action. Balance between the Soviet and Allied sides is well done. In general, the Allies move faster and have superior naval power (the Aftermath add-on balances the navies somewhat). The Soviets have stronger but slower units, and better air power. What distinguishes Red Alert (and its sequel, as well) is the fact that the units are really different. They aren't just clones of the other side with different graphics, and many have very specialized uses. There are innumerable tactical plans you can choose, each using different units, maneuvers, and strategies. One thing that will not work- and this is a good thing- is playing totally defensive. Unlike some other RTS games (Tiberian Sun, Starcraft, or Total Annihilation) sitting in your base and trying to hold off your opponents is a sure way to lose. This is good because Red Alert matches are therefore more than a bunch of rushes and resource wars, but tend to be climactic battles that usually involve large numbers of tanks and perhaps air and sea support. Now, I realize some people enjoy spending hours whittling down their enemies and being whittled in return, and if you're one of those people then this game isn't for you. For all the rest of us, it's a joy to play.

But if you do happen to install the game and configure your IPX Protocols properly then you will have access to THE GREATEST GAME EVER INVENTED!!! And yes.. I just got my copy of Red Alert running a lan game on a XP machine and an ME machine.. No please, no applauss.
This game is also not very strategic. You are either allied or soviet, and each team has completely different units. That maybe strategic, but there are only 2 points of views to master. In Age of Empires or Age of Kings, there are many different civilizations each with bonuses and special units. Also, the terrain has no affect on how damage is dealt. It will just deal the same amount every time. No matter to what kind of unit. In AOK, each unit has a different amount of armor, some have attack bonuses against certain units, and units have the advantage in battle when they are uphill. This game is also very violent and bloody with futuristic weapons. Not the kind of game i would like my kids playing. In AOK, the units use bows, arrows, and swords, with not much blood and historical features. It also has a whole history book of all the tribes that you can be and their history. Oh. What the point of the game is. Blow the other team to bits with guns as big as you can. I didnt like this game much, and from my review, you can see that I would reccommend Age of Empires or Age of Kings. See my review of Age of Empires Collecter's Edition. Before you even consider buying this game.

Amazon.com Review Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun is a simple combat simulator that allows the player to gather resources, turn them into soldiers, and unleash them against the foe. The game runs in real time, so events can turn against you quickly, but if one is cautious and observant, the battles are not too hard to win. Though their missions are different, the two sides are essentially interchangeable, with identical military discipline and similar battle units. Though the Brotherhood of Nod has fascist trappings and is obviously the villain, there is no significant difference in playing one side or the other. The game also lacks female battle units, though it features a few women in interstitial sequences. Despite these weaknesses, Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun is thoroughly entertaining and will satisfy anyone who enjoys building an army from the ground up and testing it on the battlefield. --Alyx Dellamonica Reviews (133)
