Amazon.com Review

NASCAR Legends returns players to the racing season of 1970 by including many of the legendary cars, drivers, and racetracks from that 48-race season. Aspiring drivers race against such NASCAR icons as Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and Bobby Allison. Sixteen accurately rendered tracks are offered; plan to race on the Darlington Raceway, Texas World Speedway, and Alabama International Motor Speedway, among others.

NASCAR Legends was made with hard-core motor purists in mind. Inside each prerace garage, drivers can tweak such car characteristics as tire pressure, suspension, gear ratios, and screw jacks. Gamers looking for an arcade racing game like Need for Speed need not apply; NASCAR Legends's rigorous dedication to statistics offers a complex, yet rewarding gaming experience. For optimum performance, use a Direct3D-based accelerator card to achieve crisp graphics and smooth frame rates, and a steering controller to master the tough turns. --Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Realistic driving model
  • Faithful reproduction of famous cars and tracks
  • Great force-feedback support
Con:
  • Weak sound

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
This game has a lot of wonderfully recreated tracks.Michigan 30 years ago looked a whole lot different and it is displayed in this game. Also the cars handle different and pit stradgey comes into play a lot more.I have won many a races based just off of pit stradgey than fast cars.I think everyone that likes NASCAR should get this game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Follow-up to my earlier review
I've gotten some more seat time with this sim and it continues to impress me.I'm using CH Products Combatstick with CH rudder pedals and there's a switch on the pedals to alternate between using the pedals as rudder controls for flight sims and using them as brake/throttle for driving sims. Now that I'm using them properly, I'm really getting hooked on NASCAR Legends.I've painted my own car, written my own bio, built 2 different set-ups (speedway and short-track), and am getting the hang of manual shifting, but I still have to reduce the AI strength to 90% and the race lengths to 25% or 30% just to make it to the end.On my Dell 1.3 Ghz Pentium 4 machine, the graphics absolutely fly, which shouldn't be surprising as anyone with a Pentium 200Mhz 64 Mb RAM PC (or more) should have no problem running the sim well.Just remember to install the patch - during installation the exec will prompt you to go to the website - to take advantage of this sim at its best.If NASCAR 3 runs well on your computer, Legends will run well, too.

Tracks: AlabamaMotor Speedway (now Talladega), Atlanta Int'l Raceway, Bowman Gray Stadium, Bristol Intern'l Speedway, Charlotte (now Lowe's) Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Martinsville Speedway, Michigan Speedway, N.C.-Rockingham Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Ontario Motor Speedway, Richmond Fairgrounds, Riverside International (no longer in existence), Texas World Speedway, and Thompson Speedway.Overall, a good mix of superspeedways and short-tracks with one road course.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, fun middle-of-the-road racing sim
I was 7 years old when Richard Petty raced at Daytona, but I remember looking through all of my parent's old vacation pictures of their time at the tracks. All of the cars I remember from those races are in this sim: the Dodge Daytona, Ford Torino, Plymouth Superbird, and even the rare Mercury Cyclone are there, complete with 70's vintage sponsor signs in the outfield. This sim recreates a few tracks which no longer exist, which is kind of neat for long-time racing fans who remember them.Graphics are good enough and are fast on today's Pentium 3 and 4 machines, which allows you to see a lot more cars without the slideshow effects of the newer NASCAR sims. You get to adjust your suspension, steering, fuel load, and tire pressure and you can create your own custom paint job.I have a joystick and set of rudder pedals, but I haven't figured out (yet) how to get the game to recognize my flight pedals as brake/gas.I don't do much racing on computer and I only started following NASCAR this year, but this game is a hoot to play.Slider bars permit the computer-controlled cars to be adjusted in skill, the player-controlled car can be made to drive more realistically, and the tire pressure, suspension, caster and camber, and fuel load can all be adjusted to affect how the player's car drives, too.I haven't had a chance to play with the paint shop to change the color of my car, but that should be a lot of fun, too.The only thing lacking is better damage effects and better support for my flight rudder pedals, but that may just be a matter of my reading the player manual.

2-0 out of 5 stars Legendary Gaming, That is what this game is!
I recently bought this item for 10 bucks of a person I know.I thought he was crazy giving me a 50 dollar game for 10 bucks, but I just thought hewas desperate.I was dead wrong. I was so excited to install and play it.That is where I found the first of many problems with the game.Icorrectly installed NASCAR LEGENDS, but it would not run.I installed it 3or 4 times trying to get it to work and I opened the game every wayimaginable, but It still ceased to open.It turned out that I had to goonline and download the patch for the game just to get it to work. Then, when it finnally did work, I was very disapointed in it.The game hasdrivers, their cars, and the tracks from 1970, which was all very accurate. But it had HORRIBLE graphics. It had the EXACT same graphics as NASCARRACING 2, which was a couple years old, not to mention that the setup andeverything else in the game was exactly the same. All I think they did wastook NASCAR 2, and slapped some older cars, older drivers, and some oldertracks in the game.I was not very happy. The game is definatly NOT worth50 bucks, not by a long shot. And you are probably thinking that I didntlike the game because I am not a hardcore nascar fan, but that is wrong.I'm as hardcore as they get, so it isnt me.The game really should've beena 15 dollar expansion pack for Nascar 2. And to add on top of that, theonly controller of mine the game would use was the keyboard. I dont knowabout you, but I dont spend big bucks on nice steering wheels, joysticks, and gamepads. In conclusion, do not buy this game that should have beenreleased 5 years ago. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Half-Life: Platinum Collection contains all the great action that earned Half-Life Game of the Year honors from over 50 publications and had Imagine Media's PC Gamer magazine calling it the "Best PC Game Ever" (November 1999). This package contains the core Half-Life game as well as both Half-Life expansion packs and the two most popular Half-Life mods: Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike.

In Half-Life, you play as Gordon Freeman, a research associate at the Black Mesa Federal Research Facility. An experiment blows up in your face, and suddenly aliens and a military death squad surround you. Half-Life: Opposing Force takes place during the events of Half-Life, but casts you as a lieutenant of one of the commando squads sent to kill Freeman. Half-Life: Blue Shift also takes place during the same time as Opposing Force and Half-Life, but this time you play through the Black Mesa disaster as a lowly security guard. Team Fortress Classic is an online action game featuring a wide array of WWII-themed character classes for a team warfare bonanza. Counter-Strike brings the action of Team Fortress Classic into the modern age: it's an online war of terrorists versus counterterrorists in modern team-based combat. All five award-winning programs are included in this one box. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME
Couldnt get over the fact of the characters adaptation to the environment... its crazy. loved ever minute, second, hour and week i played... riveting. recomend to everyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this, it isn't a complete set
This compilation of 4 great Half-Life based games is a somewhat bastardized version of the superior title which was released under the same name a while later. If you buy this version, you are not getting the entire collection. The new version contains yet another expansion to Half-Life that is worth playing.

The original Platinum Collections contain:
1. Half-Life (The original, which started it all, a great game.)
2. Half-Life:Opposing force (1st official expansion to Half-Life)
3. Team Fortress Classic (A mediocre multiplayer mod from Sierra)
4. Counter-Strike (The ultimate multiplayer game. This alone is worth the entire price, although you can get it for free if you own Half-Life, which you will if you buy this collection.)

The new version contains an expansion to the original called Blue Shift. In this expansion you play as a security guard in the Black Mesa compound (the same area as the original). It is just as fun as the original, but shorter.

You can usually find the newer pack (it is grey, not platinum or silver, and says 5 games in one on the front) at any large chain retail stores such as Target, Wal-Mart,or K-Mart. Hope this review can be of some help.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you still don't own Half-Life...
And you own a PC, shame on you!

Alright, here's what you need to do. Look up "Half-Life: Platinum Collection" and put it in your shopping basket. Check out. Here's what you get.

Half-Life: The original and although somewhat dated graphically, it is still a cracking good FPS. The game is just fun to play from soup to nuts and loaded with atmosphere. The levels are more innovative than anything before or since.

Half-Life: Opposing Force This game got a 93% courtesy of PC Gamer and that is absolutely remarkable considering this is basically just a Half-Life mod, although a bloody creative one! You'll love the boot-camp sequence and hey, R. Lee Ermey is in it! What more do you need?

And you also get...

Counter-Strike: Still the most popular online FPS.

and...

Team Fortress: Classic

WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?

Dude, buy the package.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Buying
HL is an awesome game with many modifications out there. The CDis not worth the price they charge.Counter-strike, Team Fortress, and Opposing Forces all come with the HL game of the year edition CD.Well, TFC and OPF at least hehe.CS is free to d/l off the web any way.The game is great, go buy hl:goty and d/l the updates so u can play tfc, opf, cs, dod, or whatever you like for free off the internet lol.If you're dumb you'd buy this to tell you the truth

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the full Half-Life collection
Although it includes Opposing Force, Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic, it is filled mainly with things that you can download from the internet with the exception of Opposing Force. Team Fortress comes with the Half-Life patch, and the version of Counter-Strike that comes with the pack is the retail (buggy) version. I am running on a 512k ADSL connection and so the only 2 things in the pack I needed was Half-Life and Opposing Force...

Sierra has an newer version of the Platinum Edition but it is not reflected here on Amazon.com

It includes Half-Life, Team Fortress Classic, Opposing Force, Counter-Strike and Blue Shift. It is somewhat similar to the Generations Edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PBR rocks and so does this game!!!
I love the pbr, so what better way to have the pbr every day than a game. This game is NOT for people who who don't like or don't know anything about the pbr. You need to understand the concept of it before you play the game. The graphics are great and it is cool how you can be the cowboy or the bull. Anyone who says that this game stinks is out of their mind and probably can't appreciate the awesomeness that is the PBR!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good game that could have been a lot better
Sierra Sports Professional Bullrider 2 is a good simulation of bullriding that still has a lot of room for improvement.Let me say right here that you have to be a rodeo fan to appreciate this game.If you don't understand bullriding, then don't even bother with this game.Gameplay is one of the strongpoints of this game. When controlling the cowboy, you use the joystick to control his body position in relation to the bull. The joystick, in a sense, becomes your body.On the harder levels you need to react quickly to the bull's movements or you will find yourself eating dirt with the bull's horns in your back. Just like in real bullriding. You can also control the bull, which I never really enjoyed. There is a season mode for both cowboys and bulls where you compete at all of the major PBR stops while trying to win the championship. The rules and the way the events run are all the same as the way the PBR does it. There is a special mode for bullfighting which is a fun diversion when you start to get bored with the regular game.

The graphics are ok, but I really think they could have done a much better job in this area. The cowboy animations are pretty good and the bull animations look good from behind. But when you see the bull from the side it looks stiff and unnatural.Thecowboys are all the same height in the game and there is only one face for all the cowboys with different facial hair added. There are a good number of real bulls in the game and a lot of bulls created by Sierra.I would like to see any future versions have all real bulls. There are lots of little things like that that they could have done to the game to make it feel more realistic. If Sierra is going to pursue this market, the least they can do is add all the little perks that they do for the other sports games.

Sierra has made good bullriding game in Professional Bullrider 2.It remains to be seen if they can make a great bullriding game.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a cowboy you gotta have this one!
As a mother of a want-to-be bull rider, I must say this game is action packed full of entertainment. For my son,Tyler, Michigan's 4 time State Champion Dummy Roper, this is a must have game. We bought it once and lost the disk. Now, I'm looking fratically to replace it. But I must admitt, you do have to know the ins and outs of rodeo to appreciate this game. It helps to know the different bulls listed and the riders. My son was named after Ty Murray and enjoys playing as him. This is a great game and worth every penny. Cowboy up and enjoy!! Hats off to you Sierra Sports on a job well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Game is an OK game
I read the reviews and someone said that it takes 2 seconds instead of 8.You need a faster computer for this game to work right.I thinkthis game is fun but it does get kind of boring once you play it all day for a whole week.I think playing the cowboy is the hardest.Playing the bull is easy and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK Game
This game was NOT all I expected. Yes, it is very cool you can make your own cowboys and bull, but that is the most exciting part. When you rid the bull it is supposed to take eight seconds, but on the game it takes about 2. Still this game is WAY better than the first. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars rather disapointing
This collection would be fun if all the games could be played head to head online, but they can't.The pool game is fun but you are much better off buying Sierra's Maximum Pool instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool game but not awesome!
This is a cool fun game. I like the amusement park pinball game the best. It's the easiest and most fun to play. Real fast mouse and button play is needed for this game. I didnt like the fact you couldnt use a game pad with it. The pool and the pinball game included with this game are not the full versions of the game. To get the full versions of these two games you will have to purchase the two separately. The music is cool but not alot of variety. The graphics in this game are awesome! I wish it had bowling in it. Oh well we can always hope for improvements in the next version. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Blobs of ectoplasm, angry Rottweilers, and sneaky lawn dwarfs are just afew of the obstacles you'll encounter playing 3-D Ultra Radio ControlRacers. This racing game boasts lush graphics, customization options thataccommodate the clueless as well as the hardcore racer, and plenty of fun-lovingattitude. This is the only CD-ROM we've encountered where we must endure bothchicken attacks and an announcer blaring, "What a pathetic display!" as we limpacross the finish line dead last.

Racers can use the keyboard, a joystick, or the mouse to control theremote-control car they chose. The keyboard option is extremely squirrelly, mousing iseasier, and, well, there's a reason joysticks are called what they are. Playerscan race the computer, go solo around the tracks, race another player, or get ona circuit and race for "money" that they can use to buy upgrades for theirvehicles. For the truly helpless, there's a controlled steering option thatdrives the car around the track automatically as the player supplies theacceleration. Players also have the option of enabling or disabling power-ups onthe tracks--pick these up and your car can inflict bottle rockets, oil slicks, electrical arcs, and more on opponents. There are also a couple of nonracinggames: a soccer game with cars as players, and battle ball, a game in whichplayers use their cars to hit balls into a pit.

This Windows-only game's strongest points are the 16 tracks that range fromsimple to insane, and the way players can manipulate the program to suit andsatisfy a wide range of racing skills. Racing-impaired testers had fun avoidingdemented lawn dwarfs in Backyard, and dodging wayward amphibians that hop out ofFrog Pond. Meanwhile, tracks like Haunted and Aztec challenged the truegearheads. Just watch out for that nasty chicken on Hillbilly Hill. --AnneErickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very fun game for all ages!
3D Ultra RC Racers is a great game! The graphics are excellent with richly rendered "top down" views. There are eight tracks of various difficultly levels from "easy" to "insane".I normally do single races but you can also progress thru a season where you gain money by winning races and can upgrade your RC car.You can choose from four types of vehicles with multiple paint schemes each and can play against a friend or the computer. It ran flawlessly even on my old system (233 mhz) and has different resolutions; 800x600 looks great! This is an awesome game for any age esp. if you have had experience with real RC cars.Check this out for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totaly Awesome !
I have been into Radio Control Cars for several years and this game is about as close as you can get to the real thing. I do recomend a gamepad or a rc wheel type controler. If you do purcahse this game, make sure to visitthe Sierra web site and get the patch. It adds a paint editor that lets youadd your own paint jobs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for two people
I have many car programs. The key for me is that I want to be able to enjoy the game and I want my 3-year old to be able to play it by himself.Using Midtown Madness and Monster Truck Race as my normal games of choice.

As a huge positive, I truely enjoy being able to play with two people atthe same time on the same computer. However it would be nice to have thechoice of playing on the same screen, rather than only using the splitscreen (though I understand the necessity when the two racers are atdifferent parts of the course). The eight tracks are enjoyable anddifferent...can be a lot of fun, though when the dog jumps out to eat myson's car he gets a little scared.

My biggest complaint is the problem'sI have when using my joystick to play, it is so screwy that I usually justuse the keyboard to steer.

Overall I give the game a 4, it is a lot offun, though the serious gamer might get bored with it after a while.Ilove the extra features you can pick up like firecrackers and rockets toshoot at the other cars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Radi Control Racers, Fun for the whole family
When i bought this game it looked pretty good, when I played it I was even more satisfied with it. It is a great game, it can be played one or two player mode. It could use some more tracks. With only eight to choose fromit limits the fun. This game is great ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aliens VS Predator VS Marines VS Win XP
I must start out by stating that this is a HARD game (from beginning to end). The pure terror that the marine missions induce is matched by no other game that I have played. You will quickly find that is not the ordinary, run of the mill shooter.Other games have been touted as the thinking mans shooter, if that is so, then AVP is the chess master of shooters. As the marine you will often find yourself creeping along at painfully slow speeds only to anticipate whats around the next bend.Once you turn that corner and there's nothing there, you breath a sigh of relief, pause the game, use the bathroom, and continue on your journey. The Alien missions are extremely fast paced due to there wicked speed and ability to climb walls and to cling to ceilings. As the Predator, you'll wish you could stay cloaked the entire mission, just avoid encounters. The gameplay, visuals, and sound are straight from the Aliens & Predator movies, which, depending on whether or not you liked them, this could be a good thing.

There are, however, two downsides to this game. The first being that it is very frightening and difficult to master.

The second being that it has problems running on my Windows XP system.I am running an Athlon XP 3200+, 512mb DDR 400 RAM, a Radeon 9600 XT 256mb video card & Windows XP Professional SP1.I should be able to max out the resolution and still achieve over 100 FPS, but at 640x480 the frame rates are in the low 20's.When I first bought this game I ran it on an AMD K6/3 450mhz overclocked to 475mhz with a TNT2 Ultra 32mb & 384mb PC100 SDRAM.at 800x600 the game ran along nicely at 50fps with Windows 98 Second Edition.Call it bad luck or whatever, but my situation stinks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Terror Game That Leaves You In A State Of Uneasiness
Made from the combination of the Sci-Fi classic movies "Aliens" and "Predator", this game combines a cinematic environment mixed with great suspense, terror, gore, and action. Journey into futuristic environments as one of three accessable characters in hope of accomplishing overall domination over the others and complete your given objectives to win the game. Be the acid spewing alien with grippling hands and super fast agility, the very mortal human colonal equiped with explosive guns and ammo, or the cloaking, stealthful, self healing predator. Each has its advantages and disadvantages over another and each with its different game play and control.

Isn't compatible with XP much and some downsides of the game, as with many, is the A.I. setting and not enough levels. The game is also considered for intermediate to pro first-person shooting pc gamers and will take much practice and patience, not to mention heart and a fast trigger finger to beat.

I would definetly recommend this game for 15 year olds and up even though its M rated. Try to play this game without a guide or cheat codes and use your head instead. Its worth it more when you actually win. Good luck and happy shopping and I hope this guide will help. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Deer Avenger 2 puts you in the role of an angry buck whose girlfriend (a winsome doe) was plowed into the road by a trio of crazed hunters. Track them in the city, the suburbs, and Hicksville, using one of three weapons, to, um, "tranquilize" them. You'll run into plenty of obstacles, though: mailmen with automatic weapons, soccer moms with advanced tactical training, and more.

The running commentary is funny at first but wears after a while--but that's what volume controls are for. You'll find yourself returning time and again to tranquilize humans into the Stone Age, avenging not just your white-tailed love but also every moose, pheasant, and wild turkey cut down in the prime of life. Game controls are simple, and the animation is good but not outstanding. Game play is fun and moderately challenging once you get used to the system humor. The violence may not be appropriate for small children, but teens and teens-at-heart will love Deer Avenger 2.--Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome parody of those stupid 3D Deer Huntin' games.
This little jewel of satire came out around the time of the Deer Huntin' PC game fad.

I went to Rock Hill High School, a place where every student on the bus is a bigoted hick with an empty 20 ounce pepsi bottle for a spittoon (even some of the girls, LOL). This one sped would play 3D Deer Hunting each morning of homeroom (our teacher was nice enough to let us play on the under-budget computers) One day a friend and I brought Deer Avenger and started playing it, boy did it send those skoal-chewing hicks into a Redneck Rampage™!

They saw what we were playing and started calling us every name they could think of. Mainly 3 letter letter words that start with F and end with G. But we didn't care, it was the funniest thing we'd done all school year aside from the time we screamed Black Power at the stupid skinhead sped's who yelled "White Power" in the halls. My friend and I were both caucasian and that's exactly why it was funny! Those poor rednecks didn't know what to think ^_^

If you loath the Outdoor Life Network and Jeff Foxworthy/Blue Collar Television makes you cringe in unbearable pain, get this game and start takin' out the trash... Trailer trash that is! Hey look, its a rare buck-toothed David Duke! QUICK, SHOOT IT!

Hmmm... done by the writers for Late Night with Conan O' Brian the same folks who did the writing for Father of The Pride. I love that show! ^.^

4-0 out of 5 stars Macglee Ratings
This game is funny but I disagree with some of the other reviewers on the proper target age.I got this game for my 9 year old daughter and she has loved it for a couple of years now.I recommend it for pre teens and teenies even more than adults. No one appreciates a good fart joke like a kid; a fart weapon?Heaven! The sexual allusions and sleaze factor are no grosser than the Simpsons or Married with Children. The revenge theme is also satisfying for teenies. Finally, it is very difficult to actually win this game for me, but my daughter (now 12) has achieved it many times.

For those who hesitate to expose "children" to this I say "Lighten up!"

3-0 out of 5 stars OK?
This game is fun and it is a little funny. But, It hardly has any gameplay theres only three levels and they are hard to beat. I bought this game for 10 bucks. I wouldnt buy it for no more than that. This game is ok for a once in a while game but its not worth no more than 10 bucks.

4-0 out of 5 stars buy this!!! or else
this game I wasn't so excited about at first, but right before I startedit I was already laughing my head off. this is by no doubt the funniestgame known to man. plus the graphics were as good as it gets. I recomendyou buy this game a.s.a.p.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deer Avenger 2, Deer in the City
The game is halirious and even though it can get boring after prolonged playing. You can pick from 3 guns (snoozie, RM16, and the dream weaver). The point of the game is to kill 3 hunters that were in a truck that ranover the bucks girlfreind (you are the buck). Each hunter has a place thathe hangs out in.People (like a bartender in a bar) in this area proctectthe hunter and you need to kill them all (takes 8 shots to kill them)before the hunter appears. The hunter is the hardest and once you kill himyou drag him out to the bucks hideout. After killing the first hunter youhave to kill the other 2.After you kill all 3 hunters you win the game, you can always go back and win the game again. It is hard to kill thehunters and takes practice. You can die very easily because all people youencounter shoot back.the only way to regain health is to shoot saltshakers, but you can only get a max. of40% of your health back. You cansave your game after you kill a hunter (there is room for 6 saved games). This game takes a lot of patience ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Opposing Force returns the player to the Black Mesa facility, but tells the tale from the perspective of Col. Adrian Shephard, one of the soldiers sent to clean up the scientists and their reality-altering mess. Just as in Half-Life, things quickly go badly for Colonel Shephard and his men. Ambushed by aliens, Adrian must fight his way through the ruins of the facility in an attempt to reach a helicopter extraction point.

What makes Opposing Force shine is the way it expands on the story of Half-Life. Colonel Shephard passes though areas that players of Half-Life are sure to recognize, and he occasionally runs into characters from the original game, including the infuriating Man in Suit. Opposing Force also introduces several new weapons, such as a sniper rifle (with scope), heavy machine gun, and a .357 Magnum with a laser sight. There's even a "weapon" that is actually a common alien creature from the first game; its unique features allow it to be used as a kind of grappling hook.

Several new aliens make an appearance as well, almost all of them deadly. They exhibit the same sophisticated AI (artificial intelligence) as the monsters in Half-Life, relentlessly and intelligently attacking Adrian as he makes his way through the game's impressive levels. Fortunately, Colonel Shephard's rank allows him to take command of any soldiers he encounters. Riflemen and machine gunners can be ordered to follow Adrian and provide covering fire, or assigned to guard a door or room. Engineers can cut through locked or blocked doorways, while Medics can heal the injured. Unlike Half-Life's solitary "me against the world" game play, the addition of competent friendly forces provides a feeling of camaraderie: there's nothing like leading a squad of loyal Marines against an alien horde. --Mike Fehlauer

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than Half Life
This is game is much cooler, more fun than Half life. Weapons are good, there are less annoying puzzles, night vision googles are cool, AI is awesome, new and more deadly aliens. Yes the game is shorter than Half Life, but who cares when you are having fun playing it over and over again. You can make 2-3 soldiers work beside your side. Suggest everybody to buy OpFor with BlueShift, you will get high definition pack, which improves graphics and gives new looks to weapons and aliens. A MUST BUY FOR EVERY FPS FAN.

4-0 out of 5 stars just go with steam
This game is a big rip-off now cuz u can jus get it on steam 4 fr33 if u register a yur copy of half-life. u can also get awsome stuff like counter strike, tfc, codename gordon, and other games 4 fr33.
the game itslf is not as good as half-life, but still demanded as much attention as hl.

dont buy it, just get it 4 fr33, dawg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through the eyes of ...
major Shephard. Experience Half-Life's Lambda Complex incident all over again through the eyes of major Shephard, part of a squad sent in to contain the chaos that has erupted in the Lambda Research Complex.
First, play Half-Life. Actually, this game won't even run without it so you don't have much of a choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing can match Half-Life, but this is a worthy try.
Although significantly shorter, with worse weapon-pacing, a lot less story and a lot of inconsistancy, Opposing Force manages to still satisfy through great gameplay and innovative new aliens.

No game will ever come close to the unmitigated brilliance that was Sierra's 1998 release Half-Life, so expecting a mission pack to come even close may have hurt public opinion for this game. Not helping matters is the fact that for about the same cost you get a far shorter game.Additionally, the weapons are all apprehended too quickly and a lot of the plot (which dissapears all too quickly) meshes with the original game.

In Op4 you are Adrian Shephard, a corporal sent in to eliminate all traces of the debacle at Black Mesa. However, shortly before reaching the LZ your helicopter is shot down by weird creatures and you are separated from your squadmates. The military has realized it's in over its head and pulls back, but you are left behind, trying to stay alive with other remnant forces.
Despite all the negative reasons i have listed above and the anti-climatic, seemingly rushed ending, this is still a very fun game.It keeps some weapons and adds innovative new ones.It keeps almost all the old aliens and adds brilliant new ones, and action sequences that are difficult and entertaining.

I would reccomend that anyone new to the Half-Life family purchase and enjoy the original first, but this is still a worthy game and highly reccomended to any Half-Life devotee.6.5/10

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not greatest.
This game is truly the greatest add-on for half-life, other than CS. I wasn't too thrilled with being able to play "bob"(blue-shift), but I couldn't wait to play this. The army always bugged the s*** out of me, and I wanted to be them. But it wasn't exactly what I expected. They could have made this 3000 times better if they knew that the problem was going on, not being thrusted into the action like everyone else. I wanted to be able to neutralize the threat, and the facilitators. Not have them be our crutch. and, you dont get good ammo/weapons in the beginning. It's annoying! But I enjoyed this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it and pass on a laugh, fun!
This is a simple game in learning to navigate. You're a ticked-off deer going out to hunt a plague of hunters invading your woods. You have several devices for locating these killers (comical calls, brocolli activated farts, and a sack full of lures) You can hop from one of four seasons. As you defeat a prey, you gain their weapon. The better tactics you use, the more likely you are to encounter a higher-level of hunter. But as much as you can hunt them, they are there to shoot you. And they are varied from Boozer--the bear-hat lush, to Tad---the Wall Street GPS-equipped aristocrat,--to Zeke, an A-1 sportsman. After you kill one or die, you are sent back to a cabin where you can select a new season and pick a new weapon. Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny
This is a great game to play if you are a hunter and ever thought that your the hunted because you never see dear but they always see you, you will laugh your butt off at this game.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts off well
This game has an exciting beginning and is wicked funny. One drawback is that I find it impossible to kill the last hunter. Overall, the game is pretty easy except for the last two hunters and I recommend getting this game only if you play games about 30 minutes a day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the serious gamer, but lots of fun
Well, until Simon & Schuster comes out with a 5th "Avenger" game...I've got 'em all.I haven't played it out yet, but with what I have played this is what I see.

The environment in "Deer 3D" is a excellent evolution from the first person side-scrolling in "Deer and Deer 2".Not knowing how much previous experience that S&S has with "true" 3D environments ("Bass" is really 2D with a third person perspective) this feels like a good start with somewhat usable terrain features. With a few small beefs.Either I haven't figured it out yet, or you can't climb the trees. An obvious hunters perch. Also do the trees factor into how hard it is for the hunter to hit you?If not they should, cover and concealment after all.And one observation. Is it just me, or are there no negative elevation values on the ground? There seems to be a definite level ground or zero point and it stays at zero or goes up from there, with the very obvious hills. But nothing going down.

The weapon collection is interesting, with one suggestion.Unless I haven't pulled it off yet, there's no "one shot kills."Any of the weapons have the very real potential to do it "quick n clean" but not in the game. This may be an obvious choice by S&S to increase the difficulty, or keep it a lighthearted fun game. But the possibility of it, controlled or random, would be nice.

As with "Bass" (see my review) this is not for the serious player of RPGs or RTSGs, looking to tax their new computer or graphics card. But for those of us loyalists that were hooked by the first "Avenger" it's GREAT.The only reasons that I'm not giving it five stars I've mentioned above. With the way they're advancing, if S&S takes this concept any further. There is a possibility that the next one can compete directly with the current flock of "serious" 1st person 3D shooters.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good gag gift...
I received this as a gag gift since I'm not a big fan of the hunting games. In Deer Avenger, you play the first person in the form of a deer, going after stereotypical hunters.Along the way, though, you have to make sure you don't shoot any friends like the hiker or environmentalist.

There are several weapons to be used as you progress in the game, both attacking ones and attracting ones (pizza, beer, etc.)There are also 'attractive' sounds used to lure the unsuspecting hunter.

I found the graphics in this game to be a bit behind the technology although the sound is appropriate for the scenario.

Playing the game only stays interesting for the first few hunts as a typical gamer will find that this game is too easy and offeres very few twists and turns.

Installation was quick and without glitches.

So buy it as a fun gift, but don't think that it will keep the recipient busy for any lenght of time. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Fans who mastered the original StarCraft's three races and survived its well-crafted story were quickly clamoring for more. A worthy sequel, Brood War delivers further plot twists and bigger battles.

In keeping with StarCraft's groundbreaking design, this expansion pack--which requires the original game--presents you with three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming Humans, insidious Zerg, and proud Protoss collide again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race's arsenal makes for tense battles.

Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile frigates, as well as Medics that automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under) ground support. Along with the Corsair fighter, the Protoss re-enter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from some weak pathfinding.

Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more than 100 additional multiplayer maps. Real-time strategy games don't get any more epic or any more satisfying. --Jack Gardiner

Pros:

  • New units open up more strategic possibilities
  • More of StarCraft's great storytelling
  • Missions are challenging and varied
Cons:
  • Unit pathfinding is still a little clumsy and requires careful micromanagement

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
Brood war is, by far, the best expansion to a strategy game ever made. Unlike those expansions that just add a race like every other, or that add a campaign, Brood War adds both consuming campaigns, and units you'll wonder "how did I do without these guys?!"

Graphics: 5/5 It looks like an upgrade, but it's not!
Controls: 4/5 No upgrade here
Gameplay: 5/5 Units make all the difference
Story: 4/5 Makes little sense, but enough
Tech: 6/5 Amazing Expansions

Overall: 5/5 Buy this, it's worth it

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game
This is one of the best games ever. With a map editor you can create your own maps. The editor features trigger functions so you can make the ultimate game.Online playing is superior.I play it all the time and my favorite game is WWII Death in Europe.People create maps and share them all over the internet. The controls are easy to master with keys and the mouse. The game is complex and if u read the strategy book that comes with the expansion, you can master the game.I recomend this game to the best gamers out there. It has a very reasonable price. With the added units like corsairs, and devourers. The game is flawless.Buy it today!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best PC Strategy Game Ever Created
I have played this game ever since it came out and am a veteran player. Each of the three paragraphs will explain different parts of the game so if you are about to just scroll down past this review because it's long, just read the paragraph that most interests you by reading the first few sentences of any of the shown paragraphs because those sentences describe that paragraph. This first paragraph will explain the races and the differences. This game has 3 unique races that are very different.Zerg, Protoss and Terran all have very different units, buildings, statistics, strategies and more.Zerg have weak units, but they are very cheap too build and you can create them very early in the game because you can build units very fast compared to the other races. So Zerg is the best race to rush other players with.Protoss is a very strong and expensive race. They are slower to build than any of the races but they are very good if you are going to play a long game with someone.Terran, which are the humans if you don't know, are in the middle. They are in middle of the stats when you look at the cost difference, strength and how fast they take to build. All the races are good to be, since the game is one of the best of it's kind.

Now this second paragraph is about game play.Starcraft with its expansion pack is a one of a kind. The game loads fast, the controls are straight forward and are simple to use, the graphics are great, with it's dark textures and detailed landscape it has better graphics than all other strategy games for it's time.Even some of the newer games from Westwood Studios do not come near to the graphics of this game. This game has great missions, and the first few for each race also act as a tutorial for new players. Also in between every few mission they have a cinematic movie, which you can watch or skip if you want. The mission-briefing screen depends on which race you are, for the setting is different and the characters (speaking animated portraits) that tell you your mission are different. This game has pretty good music and when you click on a unit they always reply back with some sort of response.

Now this third and last paragraph will talk about the best part of the game, multiplayer mode.Battle.Net, which is Blizzards official online multiplayer battle network where you can play against hundreds of thousands of other players who are online, is a great system. You can play MANY different types of maps with up to eight people in one game. There are different types of maps, some are 'User Map Settings, Melee, Team melee, Capture the Flag, etc.'There are more types but I will just continue. When you install the game it also comes with a map editor. This map editor allows you to customize maps, and even create your own maps. You can change the name and stats of units, change the mission briefings, create triggers and timers and scoreboards and teams and change the terrain plus more. You create an almost actual RPG like game or any other type of game if you put hard work into it.I usually play user map setting maps that are the maps created by other players because they are more fun than the regular melee. This game is the only current strategy game to enable you to completely change and upload your own maps to the server for others to play.I myself have created a map called "God vs. Satan" which is a VERY popular map right now and others have made probably over 10 other upgrades to the map which is probably more than any other map.I play online all the time under the nickname punwod and you can message me or anyone on Battle.Net by typing "/w NICKNAME".I hope you enjoy this game and this review!=)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great expansion set!!
This is a great expansion set! Some expansion sets, like the warcraftbeyond the dark portal just added some new maps, but the gives newmissions, maps, and best of all, six new units. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hoyle Board Games and Xp
I am a proud new owner of a Pen 4 that came with the new Xp Home Edition, and I am sad to say that my favorite Game in the whole world only partially worked for 10 days from purchase. Though my Xp has a compatability wizard for Windows 95, 98, Me, Nt, 2000, I can not keep the color bit from dropping to 8 from 32 bits. There is no support for Xp in reality, though much lip service is given to it by the Co. I purchased it from and Microsoft. It is a real kicker that Microsoft actually wrote the Hoyle Games. Though in the read me file Hoyle promises it is Xp compatable. However, what few days I could play Hoyle Games 5, I feel in Love with it. I love Harley the beautiful and friendly Bear, Rosewell the Alien that retired from area 51, Maurice that was abducted by aliens 150 years ago, that has returned to play games with his Beaver puppet, just to name a few. Their sympathy when your game doesn't go well coupled with friendly competition is a wonderful respite from the challeges that I as a handicapped person in the Alaskian Bush with long nights (6 months long) and long winters (6 months) long really fight over and find whelming sometimes. Since, our mail services and Delivery services such as Fed X, UPS, and the US Postal Services offer such challenges to getting anything from the Lower 48, I will be with out my favorite Gaming companions for quite a while, and then I don't know if it will run even then. However, those of you that can run it, please do it is funny, charming, and engaging with beautiful graphic, and quality unsurpassed in this era of gaming, these games are not stressful, harsh, coarse and is non-violent, and so user friendly, a five year old could play them. So, go play, and enjoy as I have Hoyle Games, they'll keep you coming back.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a super collection of games!
My first purchase of a Sierra Board Game collection was the previous version of Hoyle Board Games. Backgammon was all I was interested in and it was fine except for the erroneous layout of the pieces on the board when you start. I sent it back writing a letter to Sierra explaining why I didn't like it. I bought this new Hoyle Board Games again, mainly for the Backgammon. I was pleased to see the correct piece layout and was more open to the other games. WOW! I never knew about Yacht, but once I played it I was HOOKED. Discovering that Yahtzee came from Yacht, I ran out and bought Yahtzee and Deluxe Edition Yahtzee and became HOOKED to Yahtzee!!! The Pachisi is great, I learned to play great games I never played before (Dominoes, Master Mind, Mancala and Battling Ships). I liked that they told you the history of the games and the more well-known names of some of them. I even like Snakes and Ladders. I like the angle of the Backgammon board, but would have liked an alternate topside view like they have for Chess. I hope they incorporate that in their next Hoyle Board Games and add Chinese Chess. Yacht's rules from Hoyle state that a 4-straight scores 30 and in this program it scores only 25; they also need to fix this, unless it is a variation of it. This is a splendid program, and if you are considering it, please treat yourself to it; if you don't know the rules to most of these games, you will after reading the easy-to-understand rules and will get hooked like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hoyle Board Games has turned the family into addicts!
Hoyle Board games 2001 is a fabulous collection of thoroughly enjoyable and addicting family board games. These great games include beautiful graphic versions of Backgammon, Mancala, Chinese Checkers, Chess, Dominoes, Pachisi, Mah Jong Tiles and the addicting Mah Jong Gravity. Also, there are great versions of Battle Ships, Master Mind, Connect Four, Yahtzee and Chutes and Ladders--all disquised by easily identified title variations.A fun game called Placer Racer is a family favorite. It isn't really a board game - more of an arcade game--shooting colored balls trying to make matches of three while you race against a steadily decreasing game area. This collection of board games is great and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants fun, wholesome, clean fun for the family. ... _You Don't Know Jack_ has risen from a small diversion destined for the discount bin to a cultural phenomenon which rivals Lara Croft. This collection will introduce you to the basics of the series, and give you awealth of questions that will keep you playing for hours.

What makes_Jack_ such a fun experience is not merely that it provides a moderatedgame show environment akin to what one can find on televised game showslike _Jeopardy!_.Rather, it is that it takes the standard TV game showsand turns them on their ears. This is a game show that makes fun of itsown genre--and the American culture which spawned it.In the process, itmanages to be a truly novel offering.Instead of having a standardquestion-and-answer format, the _Jack_ series thrives on throwing you curveballs.Just when you get confident with answering multiple choicequestions, _Jack_ has you actually type the answer (and spelling counts). Or you get a JackAttack (tm) question or a Threesome question, or any oneof the other question styles.

In short, _Jack_ wins through because itis the first game show to be originally designed for and to take advantageof the multimedia potential of home computers. Create fleets of up to five vessels, and gang up on small vessels.Invade enemy territory in missions ranging from Planetary Scan, Assulting defensless stardocks, or taking a suicidal run on an enemy starbase.
Launch Probes, cloak, use an anti-cloaking scan, launch specialized shuttles, an perform eratic manuvers.Manage your sheilds to prevent enemy boarding parties from completeing their mission.Name your ship, and create ships from the shows like the U.S.S. Defiant, and visit noted locations such as Sector 00,01 (Earth), Romulus, Remus, The Borg Homeworld, and the legendary home of th klingons, Q'ronos.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great 4-star game
The reason I rated Viper racing 4 stars instead of 5 is because (You'll see if you're the plane) you can drive of the edge of the
earth. Realistic huh? NOT! I also found out that you can do flips. Other than that, Viper racing is a pretty good game. The graphics and sound are REALLY GOOD. Track detail is average.
This is a good game for intermiediate and advanced users.

P.S. In the garage, if you turn (in chassis) Bump to 0-0, rebound to 0-0, springs to 100-100, Anti-lock braking to 47-47 and (in align) height to 20.0-20.0...FEEL THE EFFECT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Viper Racing 2002
I for one have really enjoyed VR for about 4 years now, the graphics were great back when the game came out and now there even better with all the great car and track addons. we have brought the game a long ways in the past years. the sound of the game was and still is the best i have heard for a pc game no music.. dont need it anyway :) i'd rather listen to the hp of an engine and tires burning rubber around the coners. game play, try racing games like gt3 for ps2 online.. not gona happen. hook up with some friends and get in a 8 player multiplayer game going and hang on to your hats! this game its way worth 10 bucks at any retail store that you can find it at. and now with high res textures it may even get to the point of beating the graphics of gt3.. hmmm =)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great game
This game is great. It takes racing reality to a new level, for such an old game. I still think that nfs's new releases only equal viper racing, and the capability to create your own cars for the game gives it a whole new perspective. The paintshop and custom made skins on the web are an added bonus. If there's one racing game to go for, its viper racing.
-edit- Be sure to look for my addon Mach 1 Mustang, with realistic wheelbase dimensions, Mustang sounds, drag tires, and custom rims!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for its day, but not anymore
I'm sure this racing sim had a pretty good audience back when it was introduced, but the years have not been as kind to it as it has to other racing sims, such as NASCAR Legends which still has a good audience."Viper Racing" has nothing but fictitious tracks that look more or less like futuristic arenas from an arcade game, which wouldn't be so bad if there were more tracks to choose from.On the upside, you get to customize your car.On the downside, all of the cars are the same unless you adjust the suspension and such. You're better off with one of the "Need For Speed" games or a copy of "NASCAR Legends".If Sierra Sports had used the real GT racing season as a model for this racing sim, it would've been more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most realistic race-simulation ever.
Who cares about Gran Turismo? Ok, it has a lot of cars, but you can drive to the wall at 300km/h and bounce off smiling. Viper racing is totally different. It is very smooth to drive and it also takes damage when you hit something. Dodge Viper is also the most beautiful car in the world.

Viper racing is an old game already but still worth the ~15$ it costs right now. I?ve had it for years and I still play it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer brilliance
I can see how its fun. However,it is just like the game Dark Age of Camelot. Here there are three Realms which you can join - Albion, which is similair to England and is based on the Arthurian Lgends, Hibernia - which is based on celtic legend and Midgard - which is based on the Norse Mythology. Here, you can have 8 characters on each server, and play any number of the current 18 races: Trolls Dwarves Kobolds Norseman Valykn Frostalf Briton Highlander Avalonian Saracen Iconnu Half Ogre Elf Lurikeen Firbolg Celt Sylvan Shar. Each realm has individual classes, including ArmsmanCabalistCleric FriarInfiltratorMercenary MinstrelPaladinScoutSorcerorTheurgistWizardReaverNecromancerVikingWarriorSkald beserkerthaneSavageBonedancerRunemasterSpiritmasterShamanHealerHunterShadowbladeBardBlademasterChampionDruidEldritchEnchanterHeroMentalistNightshadeRangerWardenAnimistValewalker. Then, join with the thousands of players in your realm and go to fight in epic battles and huge sieges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Addictive!
This game is definatly a keeper. After the first few days of playing you are hooked. Even though you have to pay a monthly fee, you'll find that it is well worth it.

Choose between 3 exciting realms, Midgard, Albion and Hibernia. Then choose between your favorite type of class, whether that is rouge, caster, fighter, or healer. In the game, you will find that leveling is a must, and with each new level you earn points to advance your self. The whole idea of leveling and finding your way around is difficult at first but becomes easier later on. Certain things come with certain levels such as:
Level 5: Choose your main class, instead of you base class, and specialize in new and more exciting abilities.
Level 10: Earn the right to a last name.
Level 15: The first level you can enter Battle Grounds, also known by BG's. There are 4, BG0, BG1, BG2, and BG3. 15-19 BG0. These are RvR area's (Realm vs. Realm) where you can tear at the other realms and battle for center keep. Here you are fighting useing your skills agaisnt real people, not just creaters in the game.
Level 20: Guild embelem. BG1 20-24 (I've found not very active)
Level 25: BG2 Also not a very active Battle Ground.
Level 30: Ahhh yes, one of the most enjoyable levels (I thought) you can go into BG3 which is a very exciting, jam-packed Battle Ground. This level also enables exciting new areas to go in!
35+: You can go into the frontier battleing Levels from 35-50, enjoy new and better groups, find newer and exciting guilds, get better items, and help lower levels. Gets very fun from here on...

It's not just the leveling and gameplay of the game, you can build strong social relationships, make friends with other people, I even have relatives who I play with in the game all the time. Find new guilds, the real people playing in the game make it all the funner. Having some one to talk to as you play is always fun.

Enjoy! ... Read more
